Trump Sends Warning Letters on Tariffs Ahead of Deadline

US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he had signed letters to 12 countries regarding new tariffs. He described these letters as “take it or leave it” offers. The letters are expected to be sent out on Monday, just before a major trade deadline on July 9.

Trump Talks Tough on Trade

While flying to New Jersey aboard Air Force One for Independence Day celebrations, Trump told reporters, “I signed some letters and they’ll go out on Monday, probably twelve. Different amounts of money, different amounts of tariffs.” However, he did not name the countries receiving the letters.

Back in April, Trump had introduced a 10% base tariff on most imported goods entering the US. He also warned that the rate could rise to as high as 50% for specific countries. But he put the hike on hold for 90 days to allow time for negotiations. That grace period ends on July 9, making the upcoming deadline crucial.

India’s Position on the Trade Deal

India has taken a firm stand on trade negotiations. Commerce and Trade Minister Piyush Goyal made it clear that India will not rush into a deal just to meet deadlines. Instead, he said India will work on its own terms to strike a fair agreement.

Earlier reports from News18 suggested that the India-US trade deal might be finalized soon. A team from India had recently returned from Washington after high-level discussions with US officials.

Progress with Other Countries

The Trump administration has already reached agreements with countries like the United Kingdom and Vietnam. Meanwhile, the US and China have agreed to temporarily reduce their high tariffs on each other’s goods, easing trade tensions.

No Deal Likely with Japan

However, talks with Japan haven’t gone smoothly. Trump expressed doubt about any agreement with Tokyo. He said earlier in the week, “We’ve dealt with Japan. I’m not sure if we’re gonna make a deal, I doubt it, with Japan. They and others are so spoiled from having ripped us off for 30, 40 years that it’s really hard for them to make a deal.”
