US President Donald Trump, in his first speech to Congress after re-election, reaffirmed his expansionist vision. He declared that the United States would eventually annex Greenland. Moreover, he suggested that force remained an option if the island did not willingly join.
Trump’s Expansion Plans
Since winning the 2024 election, Trump has aggressively pursued territorial expansion. In addition to Greenland, he aims to annex Canada, the Panama Canal, and the Gaza Strip. Furthermore, he has pledged to remove native populations from Gaza, a move widely condemned as ethnic cleansing.
Trump’s Statement on Greenland
On Tuesday, Trump addressed Congress and extended an invitation to Greenland. “If you choose,” he said, the island could join the United States. However, moments later, he added, “I think we’re going to get it one way or the other. We’re going to get it.”
Military Threats
Trump has repeatedly hinted at using military power to seize Greenland and the Panama Canal. For instance, in January, he refused to rule out force when asked about Greenland’s annexation. “I’m not going to commit to that. It might be that you’ll have to do something. The Panama Canal is vital to our country. We need Greenland for national security purposes,” he said.
Global Backlash
Although Trump initially promoted an isolationist foreign policy, his expansionist actions have sparked global concerns. His administration has not only used economic pressure but also threatened invasions to advance its goals. As a result, Denmark has increased military spending to protect Greenland and its mainland. Meanwhile, Canada’s leaders have united to strongly condemn Trump’s annexation plans.
