Raja Raghuvanshi (29), a businessman from Indore, married Sonam (25) in an arranged ceremony in early May 2025. Just days after the wedding, the couple set off on their honeymoon to Meghalaya
On May 21, the newlyweds arrived in Sohra (Cherrapunji), Meghalaya. They stayed at a homestay near the iconic living root bridges. It was meant to be a romantic escape — but tragedy awaited
Raja went missing on May 23. On June 2, his body was discovered in a gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls with his throat slit. Jewelry was missing, and a traditional blade (dao) was found nearby
After Raja’s death, Sonam mysteriously disappeared. Her whereabouts were unknown for over a week, sparking suspicion as she neither returned home nor contacted her family
On June 9, Sonam surrendered to police in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. She was later brought to Meghalaya under tight security for interrogation and crime scene reconstruction
Police arrested three men: Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Raj Singh Kushwaha. One suspect remains on the run. All are believed to have aided Sonam in the murder
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) used drone footage, phone tracking, CCTV, and call logs to piece together the movements of Sonam and the suspects before the murder
During interrogation, Sonam confessed to planning the murder. She admitted to a prior relationship with Raj Kushwaha and tracking Raja’s location to aid the killers
Crime scene reconstructions are ongoing in Sohra. The final suspect is still at large Raja’s family is demanding the death penalty, while Sonam’s father claims she was framed
