In a heart-wrenching incident from Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district, a young man fulfilled his promise to marry his beloved after her death. The emotional and symbolic ceremony took place in Nichlaul, where a grieving youth married the lifeless body of his fiancée just before her last rites, leaving an entire town in shock and sorrow.

Grief Turns to Symbolic Union

The deceased, daughter of the man’s landlord, reportedly died by suicide under unclear circumstances. With her body prepared for cremation, the young man reached the home and insisted, “I had promised her I would make her my bride, and I will.”

Despite initial hesitation, the girl’s family gave in to his emotional plea, acknowledging the love that had blossomed between the two. A local priest was summoned. As mourners watched in stunned silence, the man solemnised the union by applying sindoor in the parting of the deceased’s hair fulfilling the last ritual of marriage.

No Celebration, Only a Promise Kept

“There was no celebration, just a promise kept,” said a villager who witnessed the rare and emotional act. Instead of mangal geet, the air echoed with sobs.

Locals revealed that the couple had fallen in love while the young man ran a shop in town. Though the relationship was initially opposed by the girl’s family, their consent eventually came. Preparations for marriage had already begun when tragedy struck.

Police Confirm Suicide, Probe Underway

Nichlaul Station House Officer Akhilesh Verma confirmed the death and post-mortem, saying, “We were informed about the death of a young woman by hanging. A post-mortem was conducted, and the body was handed over to the family. Further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause.”

The symbolic marriage was followed by the final rites. The woman was cremated as a suhagan (married woman), a gesture that transformed a tragic goodbye into a deeply emotional tribute to love and commitment.
