The chilling mystery behind the disappearance of a 28-year-old man from Agartala’s Indranagar area came to a tragic end on Wednesday, when his body was discovered inside a trolley bag hidden in an ice-cream freezer in Tripura’s Gandacherra market. The incident has left the state stunned, unfolding just days after the infamous “honeymoon murder” in neighbouring Meghalaya.
Victim Linked to Smart City Project
The deceased, Sariful Islam, worked as an electrician with the Agartala Smart City Mission project. His brutal murder has been traced to a love triangle involving him, a woman, and the main accused Dibakar Saha, a 28-year-old doctor.
“Initial investigations point to a love affair between the victim and the woman, who is also a cousin of Dibakar Saha. The love triangle appears to be the motive behind the murder,” said Kiran Kumar K, a senior police officer of West Tripura.
Pre-Meditated Crime, Six Arrested
According to the police, Dibakar lured Sariful to the residence of one Joydeep Das in South Indranagar Kabarkhala on June 8 under the guise of offering a gift. Upon arrival, Sariful was ambushed by Dibakar and two accomplices Animesh Yadav (21) and Nabanita Das (25), who strangled him.
They packed the body in a trolley bag, which had been purchased two days earlier. On June 9, Dibakar’s parents, Dipak and Debika Saha, arrived from Gandacherra and transported the bag to their shop, where they concealed the body inside a freezer.
All six accused including Dibakar, his parents, and three associates, were arrested on Tuesday night. The victim’s body was recovered on Wednesday afternoon.
Digital Clues Revealed the Motive
Police recovered crucial digital evidence, including mobile messages, which confirmed the motive revolved around a romantic entanglement involving all three key individuals.
All arrested individuals are scheduled to be presented before a court on Thursday.
