Tesla has achieved one of its greatest milestones in autonomous driving by delivering its very first fully driverless car. A Tesla Model Y cruised from the automaker’s Texas Gigafactory to a customer’s doorstep, traversing highways, city roads, intersections, and traffic lights — all without intervention from a human.

The trip, which took 30 minutes and was made a day early, was announced on X by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. “The first completely autonomous delivery of a Tesla Model Y from the factory to a customer home downtown, including highways, was just finished a day earlier than planned. No people in the car at all and no remote drivers in the loop at any time. FULLY autonomous,” he wrote.

Tesla posted the achievement on the web, initially releasing a three-minute time-lapse teaser followed by the complete 30-minute video on June 28. The video, taken in back-seat position, demonstrated the Model Y smoothly negotiating turns, stop signs, traffic lights, and real traffic without human intervention. The vehicle even parked under its owner’s building at the end of the journey.

Musk subsequently reposted the video on X with a mere one-word reaction: “Kapow.”

Bloomberg said that during the delivery, the Model Y hit a top speed of 72 miles per hour. That fact was revealed by Tesla’s AI and Autopilot chief, Ashok Elluswamy, after the video was published.

This week, Tesla also launched its robotaxi service in Austin, giving rides to a limited set of influencers and investors in autonomous Model Y cars. Earlier this month, Musk had hinted at both the autonomous delivery and the robotaxi program on X, saying the company plans to have millions of robotaxis in the future.

Tesla initially demoed this type of autonomous driving ability in April when it released a video of vehicles driving themselves from the Texas factory floor to surrounding parking lots.
