In a heartwarming and bold act of love, a couple from Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar has made headlines after defying India’s legal constraints on same-sex marriage. The couple, originally both men, chose an extraordinary path to be together.

The couple, Prem and Sonu, were in a committed relationship for a long time in Sitalpur, Nebua Naurangia. However, due to the lack of legal recognition for same-sex marriages in India, Sonu decided to undergo a gender transition and became Soniya, enabling them to tie the knot legally.

Wedding Goes Viral

The couple exchanged vows at a Shiv Mandir, and a video of their traditional ceremony has since gone viral on social media. In the clip, Soniya is seen dressed in a red suit, kneeling as Prem applies sindhoor on her forehead. The video, originally posted by @statemirrornews on platform X (formerly Twitter), has drawn significant attention and reactions from viewers online.

Facing Resistance

Despite their joy, the couple now faces hostility from villagers and is reportedly on the run due to backlash over their union. Local tensions have escalated, although no legal complaint has yet been confirmed.

Legal Roadblock in India

Same-sex marriage remains unrecognized under Indian law. The Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling held that while LGBTQIA+ individuals are entitled to equal rights, the Constitution does not guarantee the right to marry. The court further ruled that legislative changes must come from Parliament and not through judicial intervention.

This remarkable story highlights the lengths to which individuals are willing to go for love, even in the face of legal and social adversity.
