Following the end of the 54-day long Maha Kumbh festival in Prayagraj that drew a record 66 crore visitors, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath joined hands with sweepers to clean the grounds and the river. Labourers started working on cleaning up after the millions of people who had attended, with huge bins of garbage being brought in to deal with the aftermath of the festival.

Sanitation personnel targeted cleaning the periphery of the Triveni Sangam, where pilgrims had camped for over a month. The cleanup also included volunteers such as Parmarth Niketan Ashram President Swami Chidanand Saraswati, who went along with pilgrims to cleanse the river Ganga, a place where pilgrims took a sacred dip during the festival.

The fields were covered with a significant quantity of waste such as garlands, plastic waste, and debris from temporary tents. Yogi Adityanath ordered workers to finish cleaning the Mela fields, roads, and permanent and temporary buildings within 15 days.

Traders started departing the grounds as their stalls were vacated, with goods being loaded onto tempo trucks. More than 15,000 sanitation workers and 2,000 Ganga Sewa Doots were employed to maintain cleanliness during the fair.
After the garbage was gathered, it was to be treated and disposed of in a methodical manner at the Baswar plant in Naini. The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation is also making efforts to plant more greenery in the cleaned areas.
