The United States marked the 250th anniversary of its Army with its largest military parade in decades, coinciding with former President Donald Trump’s birthday. While Trump hailed the display as proof that the U.S. Army is the “greatest, fiercest, and bravest fighting force,” the internet had a starkly different reaction.
The parade, held in the nation’s capital, was meant to be a grand celebration of military pride and tradition. But it quickly drew criticism online for lacking energy and discipline. Videos circulating on social media showed troops marching in what many called a disengaged and dispassionate manner.
Critics Call It an ‘Embarrassment’
Economist and author Anders Aslund didn’t mince words. “Enjoying watching Trump’s military parade on BBC and France 24 because it is a wonderful embarrassment for Trump,” he posted on X. “As the French commentators point out, the American soldiers don’t know how to march & don’t seem enthusiastic about doing so for Trump.”

Joining in, ANI editor Smita Prakash shared a stark comparison: “This is how POWs march—listless,” she commented, pointing to the lack of spirit among the marching troops.
Another viral comment read, “IS THIS A PROTEST? Look at the way these US soldiers march… No zest. No heart. When a soldier believes in what he’s doing, it shows.”
Even those watching the parade from afar couldn’t hide their disappointment. “I think people are mad as hell,” said 28-year-old New York-based musician Lindsay Ross, speaking to AFP.
Controversy Over Cost and Execution
The military parade was reportedly added to the Army’s birthday celebrations just a few weeks ago. Its cost, estimated at up to $45 million, also came under scrutiny, with some officials voicing concerns about potential damage to city roads from heavy military vehicles.
While the parade was meant to bolster national pride and honor the armed forces, public response suggests it missed the mark.
