A naughty Virginia opossum ate a whole Costco chocolate mousse cake and had to be taken to wildlife rehab in Nebraska at a real estate agent Kim Doggett’s home. During the winter season, the opossum was drawn to the abandoned cake left outside. It gorged until it was too lethargic to move and was subsequently rescued.
A sweet-toothed, hungry opossum ended up in wildlife rehab after eating an entire Costco chocolate mousse cake left on a porch unattended in Nebraska. Real estate agent Kim Doggett found the worn-out animal spread out on her patio furniture, chocolate-printed paw tracks leading across her beige couch.
The almost destroyed cake was on the deck floor, indicating a sugar-fueled binge that went awry. Doubtful that the chocolate might be toxic, Doggett and her son looked for assistance, resulting in the opossum’s intake by Nebraska Wildlife Rehab.
Opossum as ‘Cake Bandit’
Doggett said she tends to leave food outside in the winter when her refrigerator is full but never anticipated a wild guest would partake in such a banquet. Unable to relocate the lethargic creatures themselves, she and her son went to Google and learned that although opossums will eat nearly anything, chocolate is dangerous for them.
Wanting to assist, they organized the six-pound opossum’s transport to Nebraska Wildlife Rehab. The personnel immediately nicknamed it the “Cake Bandit” and even designed special T-shirts with its sugar-fueled escapade to raise money in support of their rescue mission. , chocoholic.”
The opossum is currently on a strict no-chocolate diet. The rehabilitation center jokingly shared a post on Facebook that the critter is not too pleased with the dietary restrictions, stating, “Sometimes a sweet tooth just can’t wait until Valentine’s Day! ?.”
They further shared, “With some time in rehab (and a diet reset), this chocoholic should be stabilized enough to return to the wild, but until then, she is a little cranky about our strict “zero chocolate” policy! Same, opossum…. same.”
Internet Goes Wild
The opossum’s surprise escapade soon turned into a viral hit, generating laugh-out-loud responses on social media.
“To be honest, if I had a whole Costco chocolate cake, I would likely be gasping a lot as well,” said one. Another cracked, “Did the opossum pay with credit or debit at Costco for the cake?”
With full recovery expected, the Cake Bandit will soon return to the wild—hopefully steering clear of chocolate-covered temptations next time.
