In a deeply disturbing incident from the Biharigarh police station area of Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a young man ended his life in the forest of Kurdikheda village, allegedly over religious differences that stood in the way of his love. The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Samrej, son of Hameed alias Bhura, a resident of the area and belonging to the Muslim community.
The heart-wrenching incident unfolded on Monday morning when Samrej’s body was found hanging from a tree in a suspicious condition, sending shockwaves across the region. A video from the spot later surfaced on social media, showing a young woman—his girlfriend—crying inconsolably near his lifeless body. In the viral clip, she is seen weeping while hugging him, a sight that left viewers across platforms shaken.

Sources suggest that Samrej was in a long-term relationship with the girl, who is from the Dalit community. Their interfaith relationship had reportedly been disapproved of by both families. Matters escalated after the girl was recently engaged to someone else. Devastated by the separation and family pressures, Samrej called her out of the house late at night and the two walked into the nearby forest.
During their conversation, an argument reportedly broke out. According to local reports, Samrej then used the girl’s dupatta to make a noose and hanged himself from a tree. Villagers rushed to the scene after discovering the body and informed the police.
Upon arrival, police recovered Samrej’s mobile phone and motorcycle from the site. The girl has been taken into custody for questioning as part of the investigation. The body was sent for post-mortem.
The case has raised serious questions about the social pressures faced by interfaith couples in India, especially in conservative and rural pockets where such relationships are still taboo. Police have not yet confirmed whether further action will be taken against those who may have contributed to the situation, directly or indirectly.
