Following the recent Pahalgam terror attack, security forces have intensified operations across Jammu and Kashmir, leading to a fierce encounter in the Tral area of Awantipora sub-division. On May 14, 2025, three terrorists belonging to the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) outfit were neutralised during a joint operation by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and CRPF.
Drone footage from the encounter revealed one of the militants hiding behind a pillar, armed with an assault rifle. Another clip showed terrorists taking shelter inside a partially damaged shed, indicating they were heavily entrenched before being gunned down.
Identities of the Killed Terrorists Confirmed
Officials confirmed that the terrorists killed in the operation were identified as Asif Ahmed Sheikh, Aamir Nazir Wani, and Yawar Ahmed Bhat—all residents of the Pulwama district. “These terrorists were affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammed and were involved in planning attacks in the region,” said an official involved in the operation.

Second Major Encounter in 48 Hours
This was the second encounter within two days in the Kashmir Valley. On May 13, 2025, security forces had killed three Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists in the forested region of Keller, Shopian. That operation, too, was based on prior intelligence and was aimed at dismantling ongoing militant plots.
Army Confirms Specific Intelligence Led to Operation
A spokesperson from the Indian Army stated, “On May 15, 2025, based on specific intelligence input from an international agency, a cordon and search operation was launched by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and Srinagar Sector CRPF in Nader, Tral, Awantipora. During this, suspicious activity was observed.”
The increased vigilance and surveillance measures, especially following the Pahalgam terror attack for which The Resistance Front (TRF) claimed responsibility, have led to a heightened crackdown on terrorist hideouts. Search operations are still ongoing in several regions of South Kashmir.
