A controversial video has gone viral on social media after showing children in Woorabinda, Central Queensland, using a dead snake as a skipping rope. The footage, recorded by an adult supervisor, has sparked outrage and raised concerns about animal welfare and cultural sensitivity.

Shocking Footage from Woorabinda

The video, filmed in Woorabinda—approximately two hours from Rockhampton—captures children giggling and jumping over what appears to be a dead snake. One boy identifies the snake as a black-headed python. It remains unclear whether the snake was already deceased when the children began using it as a makeshift skipping rope.

Authorities Respond to the Incident

The Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation has condemned the behavior and announced an investigation into the matter. A spokesperson stated, “The killing or injuring of native animals should be reported to the Department of Environment, Science, Tourism and Innovation or the RSPCA.” The agency emphasized that such actions are unacceptable and will be met with strict enforcement.

Social Media Outrage and Cultural Debate

The viral video has divided social media users. Many condemned the act, arguing that the snake deserved a dignified burial in its sacred land. “It should have had a burial with dignity,” one user commented. Others, however, suggested that the incident might reflect cultural practices, though they expressed concern over the potential desensitization of youth to animal cruelty. Another user warned, “Condoning this behaviour in the young is one of the reasons they become callous teenagers and adults.”

Legal and Environmental Implications

In Australia, black-headed pythons are protected under the Nature Conservation Act 1992. These non-venomous snakes, which can grow up to 3.5 meters, are crucial to the local ecosystem and are generally non-aggressive. Offenders who harm these species can face fines up to Rs 6.9 lakh (approximately $7,952). Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that appropriate legal action is taken.
