Alabama authorities are searching for a man who burglarized a convenience store while dressed bizarrely in a Scooby-Doo full-body costume. The break-in happened Sunday morning at the Quick Stop on Highway 82 in Duncanville, where security cameras recorded the suspect slinking in, complete with floppy dog ears and a Scooby mask.
The Tuscaloosa Police Department said the burglary set off the store’s alarm system at around 3:45 a.m., sending officers rushing to the site. But the burglar was gone by the time they got there.
Lightening the mood, police used social media to get the public’s assistance in identifying the thief. “Hey gang! We have a mystery to solve. This guy dressed as Scooby-Doo burglarized the Quick Stop at Highway 82 in Duncanville. Officers were called to the store when the security alarm sounded at 3:45 Sunday morning,” the department posted.
They went on to say, “The suspect stole money and coins but no snacks. He seems to be a white male, approximately 5’9″”. If anyone can assist us in unmasking this scoundrel, they may call 205-349-2121 or leave an anonymous tip on our app.”
Internet Responds with Scooby-Doo Humor
The robber’s cartoon character-inspired costume set off a lot of chuckles on the internet. Social media users could not help but drop some joking references to the classic mystery series.
“Perhaps set out some Scooby snacks and remain very still he will then come to you!” another user quipped. Another person joked, “Have you talked to Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy to ask them whether or not they were waiting for Scooby in the Mystery Machine?”
Capping it all, one person made the comment, “I actually saw the mystery machine drive down the street a couple of days ago, wonder if it’s related,” as another foresaw, “When he gets arrested and they take his mask off he’s gonna say if it wasn’t for you and those meddling kids.”
