The US State Department on Thursday announced approval of a $30 million funding package for the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), Washington’s first known financial aid to the organization providing emergency relief in the war-torn enclave.
This assistance is merely the latest expression of President Trump’s and Secretary Rubio’s quest for peace in the area,” commented Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott at a press briefing, reiterating the administration’s resolve to relief suffering in Gaza.”.
Although the United States has in the past given diplomatic support to the GHF, this grant marks a first instance where federal funding has been made available to the group that depends on private American military and logistics providers to bring and distribute humanitarian aid to predetermined secure facilities in Gaza.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) last Friday approved the $30 million grant, according to documents, following a priority directive order from both the White House and the State Department. It has already disbursed an initial $7 million, the documents indicate.
Anonymous sources close to the issue stated that the US can approve more grants of the same value on a monthly basis in the future, based on what happens on the ground and how effective the first funding round turns out to be.
The Biden administration has called on other countries to join in and support the efforts of GHF, highlighting the pressing need for humanitarian aid as violence and instability continue to rage in the area.
The move is made amid the ongoing difficulties in delivering aid to Gaza, which has been riddled with security and logistical concerns. The collaboration of the GHF with private American companies is aimed at avoiding the conventional bottlenecks and extending assistance to vulnerable groups more effectively.
The decision marks a fresh bid by Washington to take the initiative on international relief and reduce tensions in the Middle East through strategic humanitarian intervention.
