The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has started a new program to manage illegal immigration. It gives migrants $1,000 if they choose to return to their home countries on their own.
Launched in March
DHS first announced the plan in March. Since then, the agency has paid for some migrants to fly back using regular airlines. However, this week marked a major shift.
First Charter Flight Takes Off from Houston
On Monday, DHS arranged its first charter flight under this new program. The plane left Houston at 9:30 a.m. with 64 migrants from Honduras and Colombia. A DHS official shared this information.
“This program gives people a chance to return home with dignity while helping reduce strain on our immigration system,” the official said.
Easing the Burden
The government hopes this option will reduce pressure on the immigration system. It also offers migrants a peaceful way to leave. The payment helps them start a new life back home.
More Flights Likely in Future
DHS believes more people will join the program in the coming months. Officials say some migrants now see this as a better choice than forced deportation.
