In a trip to one of Florida’s migrant detention centers on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump suggested deporting some of America’s own violent offenders, including those who attack others with baseball bats.
“They’re not new to our country. They’re old to our country. Many of them were born in our country,” Trump said to reporters, highlighting that his government may take action against such people very soon.
He further adds that also those citizens who murder through ‘wacking a baseball bat on their head or knifing’ should also be thrown out of the country. “I think we ought to get them the hell out of here, too, if you want to know the truth. So maybe that will be the next job,” Trump added.
The Republican leader also referred to New York, saying it had experienced a number of such incidents. “Even if we forget about them, we’ve had some very bad accidents in New York. They were not accidents,” he said.
Justice Department Policy on Revoking Citizenship
The US Justice Department last month published a memo detailing circumstances under which citizenship is to be revoked. The memo states that people could lose their citizenship if they are convicted of serious offenses, spying, or if they achieved citizenship through “wilful misrepresentation.”
The citizenship of those who commit war crimes, extrajudicial killings, or other grave human rights abuses will be stripped away; to take out naturalized criminals, gang members, or, actually, any criminal convicts who continue to be a threat to the United States; and to keep convicted terrorists from coming back to US territory or traveling abroad on an American passport,” the memo wrote.
According to a report by Axios, approximately 305 individuals were denaturalized between 1990 and 2017. The report also added that if Trump’s strategy is followed, it could impact as many as 25 million American citizens.
