President Donald Trump will sign an executive order making English the official language of the United States, according to several White House sources speaking with CBS News.
Although English is the most commonly spoken language in the nation, the United States has never had a federal official language. The Wall Street Journal initially reported Trump’s plan to sign the executive order.
Efforts by Republican politicians to enact a bill formally sanctioning English have continually stalled in Congress, but individual states have individually made English the official language.
While running for election a year ago, Trump decried the increased use of foreign languages within America. While speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) just outside Washington, DC, Trump denounced the flood of strange languages, deeming it “very horrible.”
The executive order is poised to rekindle discussions surrounding language policies, immigration, and cultural identity in America.
