Donald Trump signed a wave of executive orders on Tuesday tackling a wide range of national issues, from slashing prescription drug prices to stopping Social Security fraud and strengthening U.S. supply chains for critical minerals.
Here’s a breakdown of the major moves:
Lowering Prescription Drug Prices
Trump directed the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to take bold action to “significantly reduce drug prices”, with changes aimed at improving Medicare’s price negotiation process.
However, experts warn the plan could benefit Big Pharma, as it might delay when new drugs become eligible for negotiation—something the industry has long lobbied for.
“We want affordable medication, but without undermining innovation,” a White House spokesperson said.
Strengthening Critical Mineral Supply Chains
In response to China’s latest export restrictions, Trump ordered a full investigation into U.S. vulnerabilities in critical mineral supply chains, including:
- Economic dependence on foreign suppliers
- Potential trade remedies
- National security risks
The U.S. previously identified 50 critical minerals essential for defense, clean energy, and advanced technology.
This move signals possible new tariffs on Chinese imports and further efforts to localize mineral sourcing.
Faster Permits & Flexible Office Locations
Two executive orders were designed to boost federal efficiency:
- One directs agencies to use technology to speed up environmental reviews for major projects.
- Another reverses Carter- and Clinton-era limitations on federal office placement, giving agencies flexibility to choose cost-effective and mission-appropriate locations.
“This helps the government better serve the American people, no matter where they live,” Trump said.
Privatizing Federal Services & Opening Markets
Trump pushed for a greater role for private companies in federal operations. One EO tells agencies to prefer commercially available products and services rather than costly in-house solutions.
Another simplifies the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) to eliminate red tape and encourage small business participation in federal contracts.
“Let the free market work—it’s faster, cheaper, and more innovative,” read the administration’s fact sheet.
Cracking Down on Social Security Fraud
In a tough stance on fraud, Trump’s memo targets improper Social Security payouts. The SSA Inspector General is ordered to investigate:
- Mismatched earnings reports
- Suspicious cases involving individuals aged 100 or older
This step aims to block undocumented immigrants or identity thieves from abusing Social Security benefits.
“We’re protecting the system for those who deserve it,” said a Trump official.
These new Trump executive orders reflect his continued focus on cutting costs, tightening oversight, and challenging global rivals like China, all while trying to deliver quick wins for American taxpayers and voters.
