Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old socialist candidate backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, has made headlines after winning the Democratic primary for New York mayor. His historic win puts him on track to potentially become the first Muslim mayor of New York City.
But not everyone is celebrating.
US President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform to criticize Mamdani in a furious rant. He called the young leader a “100% Communist Lunatic” and mocked his appearance and intelligence.
“He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart… and even Cryin’ Chuck Schumer is groveling over him,” Trump wrote.
Trump’s post drew attention for its harsh tone and personal attacks, even suggesting Mamdani’s rise is a sign the Democrats have “crossed a line.”
Who Is Zohran Mamdani?
Mamdani is the son of renowned Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair and is known for his bold, left-wing views. Born in Uganda and raised in New York, he identifies as a socialist and is vocal about issues like Palestinian rights and income inequality.
He has been a strong critic of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and has openly supported the Palestinian cause—stances that sharply contrast with Trump’s.
Cuomo Concedes, Mamdani Leads
Mamdani’s biggest opponent, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, conceded after receiving only 36% of the vote, compared to Mamdani’s 43% from 95% of the ballots counted.
Cuomo’s campaign struggled to recover from a past sexual harassment scandal, despite heavy funding and prior popularity.
In his victory speech, Mamdani said, “Tonight we made history,” hinting at a new direction for progressive politics in America.
Trump, however, ended his angry post with a sarcastic remark:
“Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!”
