US President Donald Trump congratulated the outcome of Germany’s recent election as a “great day for Germany” after the centre-right opposition party took first place, and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) recorded its best performance yet.

Trump in a Truth Social post connected the result to larger political movements, saying, “Similar to the USA, the German people became fed up with the no common sense platform, particularly regarding energy and immigration.”

Exit polls showed that Christian Democratic Union (CDU) candidate Friedrich Merz’s party took the top spot, and the AfD saw strong gains. Merz has declared victory, affirming conservative momentum within the politics of Germany.
