Musk, the world’s richest man, had previously served as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in Trump’s administration—a post created after Trump’s sweeping electoral victory last year. He resigned in late May, voicing strong opposition to the spending package that he called “utterly insane and destructive.”
Elon Musk has launched a new political party—the America Party—marking his solo entry into US politics after a brief alliance with President Donald Trump, the world’s most powerful elected leader. Musk made the announcement early this morning after conducting an online poll, where his supporters backed the idea two to one. The move comes just days after Trump signed a massive package of spending and tax breaks into law during the July 4 celebrations at the White House. This bill, which Musk once warned would destroy millions of jobs and cause immense strategic harm to the United States, marked the turning point in their political relationship.
Why Musk Chose to Go Solo
Musk believes that both Democrats and Republicans now serve the same interests. He described the US political setup as a “one-party system, not a democracy.” In a strongly worded post, he stated, “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
The term uniparty refers to different political parties acting as one. Musk’s now aims to counter this unified political class.
Musk Strategy to Break the Uniparty
Musk plans to break the uniparty using the historical strategy from the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC. He referred to how Epaminondas defeated the Spartans with concentrated force at a single weak point. “That’s how we’ll crack the uniparty system,” he said. He wants to apply the same principle in politics—focused disruption to weaken entrenched systems.
What the America Party Stands For
Musk confirmed the new party will take a centrist approach. It will focus on reducing national debt, modernizing the military, and promoting pro-technology policies. He especially highlighted advancing artificial intelligence to keep the US ahead.
While full details are yet to emerge, the party’s goals are clear: fiscal responsibility, national strength, and technological leadership.
The Rift That Changed Everything
Musk led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a unit created by Trump after his sweeping electoral win last year. He worked to cut federal jobs and reduce waste. Initially, both Musk’s and Trump agreed on shrinking government spending.
However, Trump’s decision to push forward a massive spending bill changed that dynamic. Musk strongly opposed it, saying it would “destroy millions of jobs” and “cause immense strategic harm” to the US. He resigned at the end of May.
By July 1, Musk made his intentions public. “If this unbelievable spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day,” he warned. After the bill was signed into law, Musk acted immediately.
