The U.S. Secret Service fatally shot an Indiana man who was armed after a struggle outside the White House on Sunday morning. The agency reports that local police had informed them of a ‘suicidal individual’ prior to the shooting in Washington, D.C.

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi made the news public on X, stating, “Secret Service agents were involved in a shooting following an armed altercation with an individual of interest around midnight March 9 at 17th and G Streets NW.”

The unidentified individual had allegedly driven his vehicle alongside the intersection of 17th and F Street, near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. He proceeded to walk north along Pennsylvania Avenue, where he was stopped by Secret Service agents at shortly after midnight.

An ‘armed standoff’ occurred when the man brandished a weapon, leading federal agents to shoot. The suspect was shot and transported to a nearby hospital, although his condition is unknown. The Secret Service has confirmed no officers were injured during the shootout.

Former President Donald Trump was in Florida on Mar-a-Lago when the shooting occurred. The suspect is thought to have come to Washington, D.C., from Indiana on Saturday, prompting local authorities to alert the Secret Service.

The motives of the suspect are still unknown, according to the authorities. The case is now being investigated by the D.C. Metropolitan Police’s Internal Affairs Division.
