A devastating roof collapse at a bustling shopping mall in Trujillo, northern Peru, has left at least three people dead and 74 others injured, authorities confirmed on Friday, February 21. The tragedy struck at the Real Plaza shopping complex, one of the busiest commercial centers in the city, located approximately 500 kilometers (310 miles) north of Lima.
Casualties and Rescue Efforts
Commander Gelqui Gomez of the fire department confirmed the fatalities, identifying the victims as two men and one woman. The health ministry reported that among the 74 injured, 10 were children, while 11 individuals sustained severe injuries requiring urgent medical attention. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

More than 100 firefighters and police officers were deployed to the scene, working tirelessly to locate survivors trapped beneath the wreckage. Local government health official Aníbal Morillo stated that a child was among those feared trapped under the heavy metal debris of the collapsed structure.
Extent of Damage and Ongoing Search
The roof collapse, spanning an estimated 700 to 800 square meters, occurred at approximately 8:41 p.m. but was only reported about 30 minutes later. Interior Minister Juan Jose Santivanez emphasized the need for hydraulic cranes to lift the remaining debris and assist in the ongoing rescue mission.
Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the collapse. Investigations are underway as emergency responders continue their search for any remaining victims. The incident has sparked concerns over structural safety regulations in commercial spaces, with officials urging swift action to prevent future disasters.
