Mexico’s Sheinbaum Hails ‘Respectful’ Call With Trump As US Eases Tariff Pressure

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum thanked US President Donald Trump on Thursday for what she termed an “excellent and respectful” phone call. She ensured that her government remains steadfast in security and migration cooperation following Washington’s decision to suspend temporarily tariffs on Mexican imports.

Following the talk, Trump declared that Mexico will not be charged tariffs on products under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) until April 2. The US president has promised to impose retaliatory tariffs on all countries at that point. Sheinbaum subsequently reaffirmed that the majority of Mexican exports to the US are already in conformity with the provisions of the trade accord.

Addressing a press conference, Sheinbaum pointed to the continuing cooperation between both nations to counter the smuggling of fentanyl into the United States, a principal reason behind Washington’s 25% tariffs on Mexican imports. She also indicated that attempts would be made to stem the illicit trafficking of guns from the US to Mexico.

We had a great and respectful conversation where we concurred that our labor and coordination have brought about unprecedented achievements, within the context of respect for our sovereignties,” Sheinbaum posted on X.

After the announcement, the Mexican peso held firm against the US dollar, and Mexico’s stock index briefly jumped before stabilizing. The two countries are still each other’s largest trading partners, with sectors like automobile production profiting from cross-border trade thanks to the USMCA.

In the meantime, Trump’s Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick suggested further exemptions from the tariffs may be forthcoming. Sheinbaum also said that a rally scheduled for Sunday in Mexico City’s Zócalo Square to protest the tariffs would now be converted into a celebration.
