While Venice has been bustling with preparations for Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s opulent wedding, it’s their invitation card that has surprisingly taken center stage and not for the reasons many might think. Since Bezos is the world’s third-richest individual, the stakes were high on the wedding’s details. So when an image of their invitation appeared online, it went viral in no time, triggering large-scale debate and criticism.
The card, which is created with italic fonts and a combination of symbols among them doves, butterflies, shooting stars, gondoliers, and even the Rialto Bridge seems to be an homage to Venice. But there were those who were left underwhelmed by what they perceived was a mediocre execution. Its design, which was seen to be amateurish and clumisely ornate, came under fire.
Memes Flood Social Media
Some social media users did not let up. One cracked, “This invite appears to have been created by an 11-year-old,” and another snickered, “Was the invite drawn on Microsoft Paint?” Others labeled it “flat” and way short of what one would expect from a billionaire couple’s wedding. One critic even created a similar invite, saying that it only took him 15 minutes to create.

Certain readers criticized the amount of work that went into it, commenting, “What a cruel invite. Looks like a donor dinner business,” and another said, “This was the best idea their wedding planner had? Good grief, Lisa Vanderpump’s daughter from Housewives organized better than this for her wedding.”
Heartfelt Message Gets Overlooked
The invitation does have a heartfelt note requesting guests not to bring a gift. Instead, it says, “We are making donations in your honor and with thanks to you for coming all the way to celebrate with us in Venice. Donations on your behalf are being made to the UNESCO Venice Office to protect the city’s cultural heritage, to CORILA to restore the essential lagoon habitats that shield Venice’s future, and to Venice International University to assist in research and education for sustainable solutions.”
Although the sentiment of the donation was welcome by most, the visual appeal of the card did not live up to expectations one would have of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez. One response captured it best with, “The donation is very generous, but the invitation itself is not what I would expect from a billionaire. I don’t know, it looks like clip art.”
In the meantime, Bezos and Sanchez have already landed in Venice to prepare for their pending wedding, which is likely to be held later this week.
