New Jersey authorities are probing the strange disappearance of a 24-year-old Indian woman, Simran Simran, who disappeared just days after coming to the United States for what was supposed to be an arranged marriage.
The New York Post, citing local police, reported that Simran arrived in the US from India on June 20. Investigators have obtained surveillance video in which she is seen standing and gazing at her phone, apparently waiting for someone. She didn’t seem to be in distress in the last video taken before she vanished, officers said.
Details of Simran’s Disappearance
Simran was last spotted on Wednesday in grey sweatpants, a white shirt, black flip-flops, and small diamond-studded earrings. She was 5 feet, 4 inches tall, weighed about 150 pounds, and had a small scar on the left side of her forehead.
Officials pointed out that Simran has no family in the US and does not speak English, making it difficult for her to be found. Police also said they could not contact any of her family members in India. “At this time, there are no known family members in India to contact to obtain her possible whereabouts,” the Lindenwold police said on Thursday.
Police investigate Potential Motives
Researchers said that as Simran went to New Jersey for an arranged marriage, it is conceivable that she never planned on following through on the wedding and used the trip as an excuse to receive a free trip to the United States.
There has not been any suggestion so far of foul play in her vanishing.
This case comes months after another high-profile missing person incident involving Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student from India. Konanki disappeared in March during a spring break trip to the Dominican Republic. She was an Indian citizen and a permanent resident of the US.
