The BRICS countries on Sunday denounced the latest military attacks on Iranian soil as a blatant violation of international law. Adopted at the end of the 2025 BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the declaration constitutes a diplomatic triumph for Tehran as it has come under relentless military pressure after a 12-day Israeli bombing campaign and recent US airstrikes.
“We condemn the military strikes against the Islamic Republic of Iran since 13 June 2025,” a joint summit statement, quoted by AFP, continued. “We further express serious concern over deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities,” the group added.
Although the statement avoided naming the culprits, the diplomatically crafted message demonstrated increasing geopolitical cohesion among members of BRICS. Iran, which recently became a member of the bloc, has been vocally backed by fellow group members Russia and China, who enjoy good diplomatic and economic relations with Tehran.
The attacks, according to reports, were against Iran’s military and nuclear facilities, such as sites in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. The absence of any explicit mention of Israel or the United States serves as a diplomatic strategy to preserve influence while still affirming support for Iran’s sovereignty.
BRICS: Modi Demands UN Reforms, Condemns Terror Attack in Pahalgam
Speaking at the summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the immediate necessity of reworking global governance bodies, particularly the United Nations Security Council. He condemned the current world order for sidelining the Global South.
“The Global South has too long been a victim of double standards,” Modi said. “Countries that contribute significantly to the world economy are denied a place at the decision-making table.”
PM Modi also criticized the recent terror strike in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, terming it an attack on humanity. The joint declaration of the BRICS reflected India’s stand and took a “zero tolerance” approach towards terrorism.
By discussing major international conflicts and domestic security issues, the BRICS Summit 2025 showed an increased desire to redefine international norms and counter Western hegemony.
