A 14-year-old boy from Brazil, Davi Nunes Moreira, died after giving himself an injection of butterfly remains. He lasted for seven heartbreaking days in the Vitoria de Conquista hospital with extreme pain from what is speculated to be a reaction or an infection, states New York Post. The youth admitted to stirring the remains of a dead butterfly with water before injecting it in his leg.
Police are trying to determine if the death of the boy was connected to a viral social media challenge. A specialist at a hospital said the boy could have suffered an embolism, infection, or allergic reaction, noting that preparing the mixture may have introduced air, which can cause an embolism and result in instant death.
His actual cause of death is still unknown, although experts believe that toxins in the butterfly mixture can be responsible for shutting down his body, resulting in septic shock. Authorities are waiting for post-mortem examinations to arrive at a conclusion but are not dismissing the option that the boy had engaged in some sort of perilous social media trend.
“Autopsy results will give us a clearer picture of the cause of death. Our goal is to reveal the complete truth of what occurred,” explained a Civil Police spokesperson in Vitoria da Conquista.
