Rumors are growing that Prince William is planning to strip Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their ‘His and Her Royal Highness’ titles. A source close to the Prince of Wales told The Daily Beast that William is thinking about being “tougher” than King Charles once he becomes king. These claims surfaced after Prince Harry spoke in a BBC interview, saying he “would love reconciliation” with his royal relatives. Reacting to Harry’s comment, a friend of William told The Daily Beast, “If he (Harry) did [want to reconcile], a period of silence would have been the right thing to do. The HRHs will go.” The source also called Harry and Meghan’s past behavior “absolutely vile.”
Can William Actually Remove Their Titles?
Although William may want to take away their royal titles, it isn’t a decision he can make on his own. Royal expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News that removing titles must go through a legal process. She explained that this would need a law passed by Parliament, and “Prince William alone cannot” make it happen even when he becomes king. Still, she noted that William is determined to send a strong message.
Back in 2022, lawmakers introduced a bill called the “Removal of Titles Bill.” This bill would give the monarch the power to remove royal titles on their own or after a recommendation from Parliament. However, the bill has not become law yet.
The couple’s break from the royal family began in early 2020. Harry and Meghan announced they were stepping down as senior royals to become financially independent. They later moved to California, blaming constant media pressure.
That same year, the UK government ended Harry’s taxpayer-funded security. Harry challenged the decision in court, saying it was unfair and may have been influenced by royal insiders. But on Friday, the Court of Appeal of England and Wales dismissed his case.
Life After Stepping Away From Royal Duties
In recent years, Prince Harry has stayed mostly out of the spotlight. Meghan, however, has become more active in the public eye. She has started a podcast, collaborated with Netflix, and recently returned to social media. In 2023, Harry attended King Charles’ coronation alone and was not seated with the rest of the senior royal family.
