Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, has finally debuted her much-hyped lifestyle program, With Love, Meghan, on Netflix. Initially postponed by the California wildfires, the program debuted on March 4, and all eight episodes are currently streaming. The show, shot at a home in Montecito, features a number of A-listers, including Markle’s buddy and actor-producer Mindy Kaling.
In one episode, Markle and Kaling had an open discussion while making cucumber sandwiches for a kids’ party. When Kaling kept using the duchess’s maiden name, Markle quickly corrected her, explaining, “It’s so funny too that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now.” Markle went on to express how having children deepened her appreciation for her family name, stating, “But it just means so much to go, ‘This is our family name, our little family name.’”
I don’t normally comment on Harry and Meghan, but this is insufferable. pic.twitter.com/mDVOmWZp6w

The exchange sparked strong reactions online, with social media users criticizing Markle for insisting on her royal title. One user commented, “Quite obvious. It’s Meghan who requires the RF connection, not vice versa. When CORRECTING Mindy Kaling for referring to her as Meghan Markle, she demanded to be called by her courtesy title, the one she earned a whole 73 days for!!!”
Another chimed in, “In the second episode (which guest stars Mindy Kaling of all individuals), she inserts a little about how she’s ‘Meghan Sussex’ now rather than ‘Meghan Markle,’ which is funny because she married into a family which notoriously doesn’t use last names.”
Criticism persisted, with one individual commenting, “This is BEYOND cringe! Her acting is TERRIBLE and her correcting Mindy is so petty, I can’t even.”
Markle wed Prince Harry in May 2018, with Queen Elizabeth giving them the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The couple, however, announced in 2020 that they would be stepping back from being senior members of the royal family.
