India’s High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, described this year’s International Day of Yoga as “special” because King Charles III extended his wishes in a rare gesture.
Royal Message Adds Significance
Speaking to ANI, Doraiswami said, “This year is particularly special as we had, for the first time as far as I’m aware, a message from His Majesty the King.” He also noted that this royal message marked an important gesture for the 11th anniversary of International Day of Yoga.
Vibrant Celebrations at The Strand, London
The Indian High Commission in London hosted a grand celebration at The Strand. People from the Indian diaspora, yoga followers, and supporters of India joined the event. They participated in guided yoga and meditation sessions.
The event followed this year’s global theme: “Yoga for One Earth, One Health.” Alongside the yoga session, guests enjoyed cultural performances like Indian classical music and dance, reinforcing yoga’s deep link with Indian heritage.
Yoga and the Summer Solstice
Doraiswami highlighted why Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21. “There is a reason why historic civilisations saw the summer solstice as a very special day. It’s connected with yoga’s scientific role in healing and improving human health,” he explained.
King Charles Praises Yoga’s Global Impact
The message from King Charles III praised yoga’s growing popularity in the UK. “Yoga for One Earth One Health reminds us how vitally important it is that the world comes together to secure a happy and a healthy future,” the King said.
“Millions across the UK are reaping its benefits.” “I send my best wishes to everyone celebrating the 10th anniversary of International Yoga Day,” he added.
The event at The Strand was co-hosted by the Indian High Commission and King’s College London. The Indian mission also shared updates on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting yoga’s positive message of unity and well-being.
A Global Recognition
In 2014, the United Nations declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga after a proposal by India, supported by 175 nations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the idea during his address at the 69th UN General Assembly.
Since then, the day has grown into a global celebration of mind-body wellness and environmental consciousness.
