Over 100 Feared Dead as Air India Plane Crashes in Ahmedabad, Say Sources

Over 100 Feared Dead as Air India Plane Crashes in Ahmedabad, Say Sources

As per sources, at least 120 people have been killed after the horrific Air India plane crash on Thursday. A London-bound Air India flight carrying 242 passengers crashed five minutes after takeoff near the Ahmedabad airport. As per aviation officials, the pilots issued a ‘MAYDAY’ call to the Ahmedabad ATC moments before the crash.

The Plane Crashed into a Hostel

A part of the Air India plane that crashed within minutes of takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport landed atop a building, as shown in visuals. A video shared by PTI shows a huge crowd gathered near the crash site as part of the crashed plane, with a wheel attached, sits atop a building.

The building is the intern doctors’ hostel at BJ Medical College, according to sources.

Air India Flight Crashes Within Minutes of Takeoff

The flight took off at 1:38 PM and crashed after five minutes.

Following the crash, Ahmedabad airport suspended all operations temporarily to facilitate emergency response efforts. Rescue teams reached the site and have begun intense rescue, firefighting, and evacuation operations. Deputy Commissioner of Police Kanan Desai said, “We are acquiring details about the casualties.”

Unverified reports have suggested that former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani may have been among the passengers. This has not yet been confirmed.

Emergency Response Mobilised, Leaders Offer Support

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state’s Home Minister, and the police commissioner to discuss the crash and assured full support from the Central government.

CM Patel said that rescue and relief operations were underway with top priority.

“I have also instructed to arrange a green corridor to take the injured passengers for treatment and to ensure all the treatment arrangements in the hospital are given priority,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tata Group, Air India’s parent company, extended condolences and pledged support.

“At this moment, our primary focus is on supporting all the affected people and their families. We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and to provide all necessary support and care to those impacted,” Tata said in a statement on X.
