In a symbolic gesture that echoed global recognition and reverence, Michaela Kythreoti Mhlapa, a member of the Nicosia City Council, touched Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s feet as he arrived at the historic Centre of Nicosia in Cyprus. The act took place during PM Modi’s official visit to Cyprus — the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 23 years — and highlighted the warmth and respect extended by the Cypriot government and people.

The Nicosia Centre, located within the walled old section of the capital, is renowned for its Venetian defenses, historic architecture, and vibrant bazaars. It lies along the Green Line dividing the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides, representing Cyprus’s intricate geopolitical past.

Respect Like Papua New Guinea Visit

This public gesture of deference towards PM Modi also sparked comparisons with a similar incident in 2023 when Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape also touched the feet of Modi as he stepped off his plane.

That historic action ended the country’s long-standing practice of avoiding dignitary receptions after dusk, as officials welcomed PM Modi with a red carpet and a gun salute.

Strong Diplomatic Message Amid Regional Tensions

PM Modi’s current visit to Cyprus carries deeper geopolitical undertones, especially as it follows India’s military action against Pakistan under Operation Sindoor. Turkey’s vocal support for Pakistan and its longstanding occupation of northern Cyprus since 1974 has added strategic significance to Modi’s trip to Nicosia.

Diplomatic onlookers view PM Modi’s visit to Cyprus as a strong message to Turkey and a reaffirmation of India’s commitment to Cyprus’s sovereignty. President Nicos Christodoulides extended the invitation, and PM Modi arrived with a high-level delegation of nearly 100 officials.

Cyprus Visit Begins with Pivotal Three-Nation Tour

Cyprus is the first leg of Prime Minister Modi’s three-nation diplomatic tour, which also includes stops in Canada for the G7 Summit and Croatia, marking the first-ever visit there by an Indian Prime Minister.

The Cyprus leg holds strategic, economic, and diplomatic significance, strengthening bilateral relations and showcasing India’s expanding influence in the Mediterranean and Europe.
