UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has revealed that he personally gets along with US President Donald Trump, despite their differing political beliefs. In an interview with BBC Radio 4 on the anniversary of the Labour government taking power, Starmer indicated that building global connections is “hugely important” and “in the national interest.”
“Building those relationships with international leaders is hugely important,” he remarked. “We are different individuals and we’ve got different political histories and inclinations, but we do get on and that springs from a variety of sources,” Starmer said.
Common Commitment to Family Life Assisted Rapport Generation
Keir Starmer further stated that a common commitment to the values of family life had assisted him in establishing a rapport with the US president on a deeper level.
“He does care about family, and there’s a point of connection there,” he said. “I get what holds the president up and what he cares about.”
Trump Made Contact After the Personal Tragedy of Keir Starmer
He also revealed that Trump personally phoned him to express his condolences after the passing of his younger brother, Nick Starmer, on Boxing Day. “Such a call genuinely to request him how it was, and specifically, I was interested in knowing how it affected his family,” Starmer stated.
He further added that their previous conversation was when Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during a rally last July. Starmer noted that such a personal connection with Trump benefited the economy of Britain. He stated it contributed to taking UK industries out of some of the wider US tariffs announced by Trump recently.
Talks With Macron Set Stage for Lower Food Prices
Moreover, Starmer underlined a fruitful conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron. He mentioned that a chat “over a glass of wine” on a train to Kyiv paved the way for a new deal with the European Union.
He claimed that the agreement would lead to cheaper food for UK residents. “That is a good thing for millions of people right across the country,” he claimed.
