At least 11 miners were killed and seven others injured after a gold mine collapsed over the weekend in eastern Sudan, according to the state-run Sudanese Mineral Resources Limited Company.
The deadly incident took place at the Kersh al-Feel mine, located in Houeid, a desert town in the eastern Nile River province. The injured workers have been hospitalized for treatment.
Following the collapse, the company announced a suspension of all excavation work at the site and warned informal miners to avoid operating in unsafe areas.
Despite being a major gold producer, Sudan frequently witnesses mine collapses due to poor safety measures and unregulated mining activity.
Previous accidents include a 2023 collapse that killed 14 miners and a 2021 tragedy that claimed 38 lives.
This latest incident underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of mining safety standards across the country.
