Rainfall is expected across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on November 27. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely in some areas. On November 28, coastal Tamil Nadu may see widespread rain, while interior regions could get scattered showers.

Suburbs Also Affected

Rainfall has also hit Chennai’s suburbs. The weather is likely to remain unpredictable, and authorities are on alert. Passengers traveling during this period should stay updated and plan accordingly.

</excerpt>

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) reports that a low-pressure system over the east-central Bay of Bengal will likely intensify into a cyclonic storm named ‘Dana’ by October 23. This weather system is set to bring heavy rainfall to multiple districts across Tamil Nadu.

Yellow Alert Issued for Multiple Districts

In anticipation of the storm, the RMC has issued a yellow alert for various districts in Tamil Nadu. The Weather Department explains that an upper air cyclonic circulation, initially located over the central Andaman Sea, has shifted northward.

The department forecasts that a low-pressure area will form over the east-central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining north Andaman Sea within the next 24 hours. “This low-pressure system is expected to move northwestwards and reach the north-west Bay of Bengal near the Odisha-West Bengal coasts by October 24,” the department announces.

Chennai and Nearby Areas Already Seeing Rainfall

Moderate rainfall has already begun in Chennai and surrounding areas, including Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur. This wet spell will likely continue for several days, resulting in cooler temperatures.

Fishermen Warned to Avoid the Sea

Authorities strongly advise fishermen to stay off the sea due to anticipated strong winds of 35 to 45 kilometres per hour along the Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Camorin region.

Heavy Rainfall Expected in Multiple Districts

On October 21, heavy rains are forecast for the ghat regions of Coimbatore and Tirupur, as well as the districts of Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruchi, Dindigul, Madurai, Pudukottai, Ariyalur, and Perambalur.

Flood Alerts and Rising Water Levels

Authorities have issued flood warnings in Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Tiruvannamalai districts, especially where the Thenpennai River flows. Officials remain on high alert due to significant rainfall in the catchment areas of the Krishnagiri Reservoir Project (KRP) dam, which has led to the release of 2,000 cusecs of water. The flood alert also extends to the Harur and Pappireddipatti regions.

Emergency Services on Standby

Fire and Rescue Services, along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), remain on high alert, ready to respond as ongoing rainfall raises water levels in several affected areas.

Visuals from the Udyog Bhawan area show commuters making their way through rainwater-filled streets clad in raincoats and clinching umbrellas.

Incessant rainfall has been causing massive waterlogging and traffic jams in several areas of the city, disrupting the normal lives of the residents.

People were spotted navigating through waterlogged streets as the rain continued to lash the city.

Earlier, a seven-year-old boy drowned in a waterlogged park in the New Delhi Rohini area, officials said.

The incident took place on Saturday evening in the park when he drowned in a pond formed due to rainwater in Sector-20 in Rohini, Delhi Police said.

Heavy rainfall also lashed Gurugram, causing massive water logging and traffic jams in several areas of the city on Sunday.

Key areas, including the Gurugram-Delhi Expressway and many other subways, were severely impacted.

The national capital also witnessed heavy downpours on Sunday. With a spell of incessant rainfall in the capital city of Delhi, several areas of the city faced waterlogged roads and streets.
Earlier in the day, Haryana Minister Aseem Goyal took stock of the situation after heavy rains lashed Ambala on Sunday.

Haryana Minister Aseem Goyal said, “In the last 24 hours it has rained more than 220 mm. Any city can withstand up to 50 mm of rainfall in 24 hours but the rainfall has been 5 times more.

There is a trend of cloud bursting. Certainly, there has been waterlogging in many places due to heavy rains. Our departments are trying to handle the situation.”

He also said that tenders would be opened for some projects that have been cleared and this would provide relief.

According to IMD, Haryana is expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall till August 14.

“Fairly widespread to widespread light-moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh during 10th -16th; Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, West Uttar Pradesh on 10th, 11th and during 14th – 16th; Punjab on 10th and 11th; Haryana-Chandigarh during 10th, 11th and 14th August,” IMD said in a press release.

</excerpt>

Due to heavy rainfall ‘yellow alert’ has been issued all across Mumbai, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted moderate to heavy rainfall all over the Mumbai for the upcoming three days. “Generally cloudy sky with moderate rain in city and suburbs. There is a high possibility of heavy rainfall in isolated places for the next three days,” the IMD reports.

Minimum temperature to be expected is most likely to be around 24 degrees Celsius on Thursday, while the maximum can reach 31 degrees Celsius. Except Mumbai, IMD expects heavy to moderate rainfall in areas of Palghar, Thane, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nasik, Ahmednagar, Kolhapur, Sangli, Sholapur, Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, Osmanabad, Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Washim and Yavatmal till July 12.

Most parts of Mumbai witnessed high rainfall, including Thane and Raigad regions on Sunday and Monday, which led to waterlogging, long traffic jams and disruption to local train services and flight operations. Weather officials are expecting several places to witness rainfall of over 300mm in the span of 6 hours. The heaviest rainfall was reportedly seen between 2:30 am and 5:30 am on the nights of July 8 and July 9, in the regions of eastern and western suburbs. This marked season’s first day of heavy rainfall of the city.

The IMD scientist Naresh Kumar, Mumbai states “The monsoon has been in a very active phase for the last few days. This means that the low-pressure zone is in the active zone, and the vertical extension is above the surface. There’s another pattern called a shear zone on an upper level due to which Mumbai, Goa witnessed rainfall activity. Heavy rainfall can be witnessed in the coming days in Konkan Goa,”

The IMD forecasted a maximum temperature of 38°C and a minimum of 29°C for Thursday. Pre-monsoon showers on Wednesday kept Delhi’s maximum temperature below 40°C for the second day in a row, but humidity levels remained high, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD announced that the monsoon is expected to arrive in large parts of northwest India within the next three to four days. However, no specific date was given for Delhi, suggesting that the monsoon will not arrive on its usual date of June 27.

The Met department’s seven-day forecast for the Capital predicts rain until the end of the month, with an increase in showers expected on the last two days of June, potentially marking the arrival of the monsoon, according to weather experts.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain in Delhi on June 29, issuing a yellow alert for that day, and moderate to heavy rain on June 30, with an orange alert in place.

While no rainfall was recorded at the Safdarjung station, which is representative of Delhi’s weather, Palam station recorded 2.3mm of rain between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm, and Ayanagar station recorded 1.8mm during the same period. Both the Lodhi Road and Ridge stations recorded “trace” amounts of rainfall.

In its monsoon bulletin on Wednesday evening, the IMD stated that conditions were favorable for the southwest monsoon to advance into “the remaining parts of the North Arabian Sea, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh; some more parts of Rajasthan; remaining parts of Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Bihar; most parts of East Uttar Pradesh; some more parts of West Uttar Pradesh; some parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, the northern parts of Punjab, and northern parts of Haryana during the next three to four days.”

Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 39°C on Wednesday, which was two degrees above normal, but the heat index (HI) or “real feel” temperature was 52°C, the same as it had been for the past two days. The maximum temperature was 39.7°C on Tuesday and 40.4°C on Monday.

The minimum temperature on Wednesday was 31.6°C, four degrees above normal, marking a difference of only 8°C between the two extremes.

Delhi’s humidity remained high, between 51% and 71%, on Wednesday, keeping the wet-bulb temperature — a measure of how difficult or easy it is for the human body to be outdoors — at 29.3°C, slightly lower than the 29.6°C recorded on Tuesday.

Higher humidity levels make it harder for the human body to sweat and cool itself effectively. A wet-bulb temperature of 32°C or higher makes it difficult for even fit and acclimatized people to work outdoors for extended periods. At a wet-bulb temperature of 35°C — the maximum threshold — humans can no longer regulate body temperature, leading to heatstrokes and potential collapse.

</excerpt>

As temperatures soar across northern India, residents brace themselves for an intense heatwave set to scorch the region for over six days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow alert’ across Haryana, warning residents to prepare for sweltering conditions from June 9 to 14.

On Sunday, the city witnessed a significant rise in temperatures, with the mercury soaring to 42.7 degrees Celsius, marking a stark increase of 1.9 notches from the previous day. Conversely, the minimum temperature dropped to 27.2 degrees Celsius, down by 3.7 notches. With humidity levels at 26% and wind speeds reaching 18 kmph, the stage is set for an oppressive heatwave.

According to IMD officials, westerly winds are responsible for bringing back the scorching conditions, ensuring residents endure relentless heat for at least six days. The ‘yellow alert’ serves as a cautionary measure, urging the public to take necessary precautions to combat heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and dehydration. Recommendations include staying indoors during peak daylight hours, staying hydrated, and wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing.

Despite efforts to stay indoors, residents face additional challenges as the city’s air quality index (AQI) stands at 168, categorized as ‘moderate.’ The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) predicts that the AQI is likely to deteriorate into the ‘poor’ category until Thursday, posing further health risks.

In neighboring Delhi, the situation is equally dire, with IMD issuing a ‘yellow alert’ from June 10 to 13. Delhiites experienced isolated heatwave conditions on Sunday after a brief respite. The mercury is expected to surge to 45 degrees Celsius, particularly in outer Delhi areas, intensifying the heatwave’s impact.

IMD data reveals alarming temperatures across Delhi, with some areas registering temperatures well above normal. While Safdarjung reported a maximum temperature of 42.5 degrees Celsius, other areas like Najafgarh and Narela sweltered under heatwave conditions, recording temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius.

As the mercury continues to rise, IMD officials warn that heatwave conditions will persist, with temperatures expected to remain significantly above normal. Dry and warm winds from Rajasthan, coupled with clear skies, contribute to the relentless heatwave sweeping across the region.

In line with IMD criteria, a day is classified as a heatwave when the maximum temperature exceeds 4.5 degrees above normal, reaching at least 40 degrees Celsius. Moreover, temperatures touching 45 degrees Celsius warrant immediate attention, signaling an extreme heatwave.

As northern India grapples with scorching temperatures, authorities urge residents to prioritize safety measures and heed official warnings to minimize the risk of heat-related ailments.
The national capital, Delhi, got relief from a severe cold, though minimum temperatures remained below normal in most places on Thursday.

According to the India Meteorological Department, on Thursday night, Delhi may see light rain.

‘Yellow’ weather alerts were issued for the Maharashtra regions of Nagpur, Gondia, Amravati, and Wardha in anticipation of further abnormal rainfall brought on by the weakening cyclonic storm Mandous. Additionally, temperatures have plummeted throughout the western state on Monday.. A “usually cloudy sky with light rain” has been predicted by the regional weather office for Nagpur.

A “yellow” alert signifies that six to eleven centimetres of rain are predicted.

Mandous, which made landfall near Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu over the last week, has also caused rain, foggy, and cold weather in sections of Karnataka, including the state’s capital Bengaluru (where, too, a “yellow” alert was issued), as well as parts of Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh.

Today in Maharashtra, temperatures fell in a number of locations.

The minimum temperature in Colaba, Mumbai, was 24 degrees Celsius, while it was 17.8 degrees in Aurangabad, 21.1 degrees in Kolhapur, 19.2 degrees in Nashik, and 24 degrees in Ratnagiri.

According to the India Meteorological Department, although Mandous has weakened since it hit the Tamil Nadu coast, the remnants of the weather system will bring rainfall to southern states and union territories till December 15 at least.

The IMD said that ‘while cyclonic circulation currently lies over north interior Tamil Nadu and adjoining south interior Karnataka and north Kerala, it is likely to emerge into southeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea off north Kerala-Karnataka coast. Under this influence, a fresh low-pressure area has been predicted to form over the same region on December 13’.

Yet another cyclonic circulation is expected over the south Andaman Sea around the same time and, under its influence, rainfall is likely over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on December 14 and 15, the IMD said.
