The BJD’s official stand came as a blow to the united Opposition, which has been trying to cobble up a majority to defeat the Bill in the Rajya Sabha.

TDP president and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has accused the Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy government of intolerance and demanded that the Chief Minister step down citing failure to prevent attacks on temples. Naidu slammed the state government for delay in action over desecration of Lord Ram’s idol at Ramateertham temple in Vizianagaram.

“Jagan Reddy is a Christian chief minister. I am not finding fault in that. He has his own beliefs. I believe in Venkateswara Swamy. But such attacks should not be allowed on other religions. Jagan has no right to continue as the chief minister even for a minute as he has failed to prevent these attacks,” he said. Alleging over 140 incidents of vandalism, he further questioned the state’s inaction and said, “Even now, another incident took place at Singarayakonda in Prakasam district. The Swamivari idol at Varaha Narasimha Swamy Temple was also disfigured. The government and the police were more interested in filing cases against the opposition leaders rather than nabbing the actual culprits. Not a single accused person was arrested when over 140 incidents of desecration and vandalism took place.”

Naidu accused that Christmas celebrations were held at the police station.

Naidu accused the chief minister of resorting to religion-based vote-bank politics and alleged that Rs 5,000 honorarium was being paid to the pastors. “This is going on even though they belong to the Scheduled Castes and are enjoying the benefits of reservation. The government cannot give honorarium to them.”

Naidu accused that churches are being used for YSRCP’s vote-bank politics. A close vigil should be placed on the new churches coming up in villages and who were behind them. Naidu said that the TDP was not against anybody’s belief but it was determined to firmly fight back the injustices and atrocities on any religion.

TDP president and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu slammed the Jaganmohan Reddy Government for “illegally arresting” TDP MLC M Ravindranath Reddy (BTech Ravi) in Chennai. Mr Naidu said that BTech Ravi was arrested only because he exposed the state government’s failure to nab the accused in the murder of a Dalit woman in Chief Minister Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy’s assembly constituency in Kadapa district.

In a statement, the TDP chief said that the TDP MLC has been wrongfully arrested a month after the rape and murder of the SC woman in Pulivendula and shows yet another instance of the Chief Minister›s intolerance and vindictive attitude. Instead of nabbing the culprits in the murder case, the police are making false arrests of the TDP leaders who exposed the government›s failure, he claimed.

Naidu explained that the TDP Kadapa leaders were being harassed and persecuted just because they took out ‘Chalo Pulivendula’ protests against the government regarding the murder issue. False cases have been filed and false arrests made against TDP leaders ever since. BTech Ravi›s arrest marked the peak of political vengeance unleashed by the YSRCP rule, said Naidu.

The TDP chief also questioned why the police didn›t yet take action in the rape and murder case. “The atrocities cases filed against the SC and ST persons were in utter violation of the laws. The Rule of Law was totally suppressed and false cases were being filed against the victims in the atrocities cases. The TDP leaders were being punished just for the sake of going to the rescue of the poor victims,” he said.

Naidu has called upon all sections of Andhra Pradesh to condemn the alleged atrocities and also the ruthless indifference of the Jagan Reddy government. A sad situation is prevailing in Andhra Pradesh now that the perpetrators of atrocities are holding their heads high and moving around freely without fear of the law, he stated.

VIJAYANAGARAM: High tension prevailed at Ramatheertham in Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh after TDP President Chandrababu Naidu and YSRCP’s Vijay Sai Reddy visited the temple where Lord Sri Ram›s head was cut off by miscreants. Members of the ruling party and the opposition took part in protests and counter protests at the site of the Sita Lakshmana Kodandarama temple.

YSRCP ministers Vellampalli Srinivas and Botsa Satyanarayana said that they were deeply saddened by the Ramatheertham temple incident and assured that serious action will be taken against those responsible for the heinous act. The ministers held a meeting with the temple authorities and priests and enquired about the incident.

Speaking after their visit to the temple, Minister for Endowments Vellampalli Srinivas said that the Ramatheertham incident was an inhuman act, and opposition leader Chandrababu Naidu has been politicizing it and blaming it on the government. During TDP’s rule, nearly 40 prestigious temples were demolished but today, Naidu has taken the ‘Jai Sri Ram’ slogan and is trying to provoke the sentiments of the public, he said.

Srinivas further stated that Chandrababu Naidu has no moral right to speak either on God or Hindu traditions, as he offered prayers wearing shoes. “If Chandrababu had a role in this incident, Lord Rama himself would punish him. Chandrababu Naidu wanted to use the issue of temples for the Tirupati by-election and local body elections,” the minister said, adding that doing politics with temples was not the right approach.

Minister for Municipal Administration Botsa Satyanarayana said that Chandrababu Naidu was conspiring to create unrest in the state and incite religious hatred, and that he had set up some groups to vandalize Hindu temples. He warned that destroying idols is an unforgivable crime and those behind the incident should be punished. “The TDP leaders are intentionally alleging the government›s role in the Ramatheertham incident and are trying to create communal disputes in the state. The YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government would treat all religions equally and shall be responsible for the preservation of Hinduism,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP V. Vijayasai Reddy, who also visited Ramatheertham temple, demanded the resignation of Ashok Gajapati Raju, as the incident took place under his chairmanship. He said that the government will re-establish the temple, no matter what the cost, adding that those responsible for the demolition of the statue will be severely punished.

Reddy also asserted that Chandrababu and his son are responsible for the mischief in the Ramatheertham temple, where the incident, that took place in the early hours of December 29, was first reported by Chandrababu on social media. “This means that before anyone in the world knew, Chandrababu, his son, Lokesh and Ashok Gajapati Raju committed this atrocity together through their associates, after which they carried out a mudslinging campaign against the government,” Reddy alleged.

Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has already directed the Revenue Department to renovate the temple. Officials have estimated a cost of around Rs 1.50 crores for the task.

Vandalism of temples and desecration of idols continue in Andhra Pradesh. Chief Minister Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy has said that perpetrators of attacks on temples will not be spared and directed police to take stringent action against the vandals. It has caused public outrage and Opposition parties are demanding stringent action.

Lord Subrahmanya Swamy’s idol in Lord Vigneshwara temple of Rajahmundry district has been found desecrated. A case has been registered and the police are investigating the matter to nab the perpetrators and have formed five teams. This incident occurred just days after the 400-year-old idol of Lord Rama at the Ramateertham of Vijayanagaram district temple was vandalised and head of the idol was severed.

The Chief Minister termed the destruction of idols atrocious and God will certainly punish those who keep messing with temples and idols. He directed the police to step up surveillance to prevent attacks on temples.

Following several attacks on temples in the state, the opposition parties accused the government of failing to protect the places of worship. Strongly condemning the incidents, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have blamed the YSR Congress Party government for its sheer negligence. The BJP called for ‘Chalo Ramatheertham’ programme on Friday to protest against the repeated desecration of temples.

Leader of Opposition N. Chandrababu Naidu would be visiting Ramateerdham today to take stock of the situation. He alleged that Jagan Reddy is responsible for all these attacks.

In a statement he said that three lions have vanished from Kanakadurga temple in Vijayawada, a chariot was torched in Lakshminarasimha Swamy temple in Antarvedi, and no arrests have been made so far. He accused that this YSRCP regime is a death blow to Hindu culture.

BJP secretary and state co-incharge Sunil Deodhar warned that the Reddy government will have to pay a huge price for desecrations.

Jana Sena led by actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan demanded CBI probe. On the other hand, YSRCP Rajya Sabha member Vijayasai Reddy alleged that TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu was behind the demolition of the idol of Lord Kodandarama at the holy shrine in Ramateertham. He alleged that the TDP leaders had conspired to divert public attention in the wake of Chief Minister’s distribution of house site pattas.

TDP chief and former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has expressed concern that the attacks on temples and demolition of idols were on the rise in the state because of the complacent attitude of the YCP government.

Naidu deplored that not just the people’s lives but the temples and idols also were not safe under the suppressive regime of Jaganmohan Reddy. The latest demolition of Kodanda Rama’s idol atop the Ramatheertham hill in Vizianagaram district was highly condemnable.

In a statement here, the TDP chief said that the demolition of idols at the four centuries old Ramatheertham temple was certainly a result of the total negligence of the ruling party. For reasons not known, the Chief Minister was just watching the attacks on temples like a silent spectator. In the last 19 months, over 120 attacks took place on temples. These attacks were going on as per a premeditated plan. Over 23 idols were demolished in six temples at Pithapuram. Durgamma temple was brought down in Guntur.

Amaravati: To reduce the learning gap between government and private schools, Andhra Pradesh CM Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy is trying to provide a level-playing field to all students. To make young children in the state school-ready, pre-primary 1 and 2 levels will now be available in Anganwadi centres, where the children will be prepared for primary school after the necessary bridge is laid in the form of education.

Bringing in a new order, the Andhra CM has initiated a slew of measures, from incentivising mothers to send their children to school, dusting off the years of apathy for maintenance of government schools and making them tidy, besides introducing taste, variety and nutrition in the mid-day meals under Jagananna Gorumudda scheme, supplying uniforms, bags and books to students on time, reimbursing fees from the Degree-level onwards along with taking care of hostel and mess charges, starting courses of skill development and job orientation in the final year of college and providing reservations for locals for jobs to complete the circuit.

Introducing English-medium education at the primary level has been welcomed by a whopping majority of Parents’ Committees while detractors have been contending otherwise. This is a step that would provide a level playing field for all students. With Covid looming large, the academic year has suffered, but welfare schemes have not stopped and been rolled on as scheduled.

The ‘Mana Badi-Nadu Nedu’ programme aims to revamp, rebuild and recreate government schools, Anganwadi centres and colleges. In the first phase, 15,715 government schools will be renovated and will be equipped with fans, blackboards, water purifiers, cupboards and other infrastructure. All the schools will get ten facilities including compound walls, toilets, and English labs. The remaining 31,073 will be taken up for revamping in the second and third phases and schools will be decked up by March 2022. Anganwadi centres will double up as pre-primary 1 and 2 and also get a facelift.

Under ‘Jagananna Gorumuddha’, nutritious food will be given to 40 lakh students in 45,484 government and aided schools. The pay for those cooking and providing the mid-day meals has been increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000. Meanwhile, under ‘Jagananna Vidya Kanuka’, school kits have been provided to to 42.3 lakh students up to 10th standard, consisting of uniforms, books, shoes, socks, belts and school bags at a cost of Rs 650 crores.

This year has seen the revamping of schools with all the necessary infrastructure and ambience on par or even better than private institutions. The Andhra government has taken up the initiative of revamping government schools with all the essentials required to put an end to the forlorn tales of the past. Jaganmohan Reddy, during his 3,648 km padayatra, had seen the plight of students studying in government schools and the inability of parents to send their wards to private institutions, which was resulting in a yawning gap in the standards and outlook between students vis-à-vis the schools they go to.

Amaravati: In a move aimed at putting an end to land disputes, middlemen, corruption and making land transactions easier and dispute-free, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy flagged off the comprehensive land survey 2020 at the Takkellapadu village near Jaggaiahpet of Krishna district.

YSR Jagananna Shaswata Bhu Hakku/Bhu Raksa is a first-of-its kind mammoth land survey initiative taken by the AP government to ensure transparency and end graft in land dealings with a unique identification number for every land parcel. A team comprising of Survey of India, Revenue, Panchayat Raj, and municipal administration departments will jointly survey three phases starting today. This survey is covered across 1.26 crore acres of agricultural land in 17,000 villages, 85 lakh government and private lands within the limits of 13,371 Gramakantam lands, 40 lakh government and private properties, and 10 lakh plots in 110 urban areas. As far as Phase 1, nearly 5,000 villages will be covered, aiming to complete by July 2021.

For the first time in India, these land owners will be given a title deed for their land along with a map in digital format and a passbook. With every new survey, accurate revenue records will be prepared for every immovable property with exact latitude and longitude, using advanced instruments like drones, Continuous Operating Reference Stations (CORS) and Rovers. A digitised cadastral map will be prepared after the completion of the survey. All details of the lands in the village will be in the maps.

Aiming to set up 70 base stations, the surveys conducted will have 4,500 teams, which are further divided into teams consisting of village and ward secretariat secretary and surveyors. About 14,000 surveyors will take part in it, with 420 people already been fully trained.

</excerpt>

There has been a lot of debate recently around the office of the UPA chairperson. Currently that post is being held by Sonia Gandhi, but given the fact that she wants to take a step back from active politics, there is speculation as to who should succeed her. Since the Congress is the single largest pan-India party in this block of anti-BJP parties, it is only natural that the UPA chairperson should be from the Congress. However, when you take into account the leadership crisis within the Congress, where it cannot even find a party president to replace Sonia, that vacancy opens up beyond the Congress. And the first person to throw his hat into the ring is NCP leader and ex-Congressman Sharad Pawar.

Certainly Pawar is the tallest leader amongst the non-BJP allies. He also has a good equation with most regional chieftains cutting across party lines from Mamata Banerjee, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Nitish Kumar, the Abdullahs, M.K. Stalin and even fence-sitters like Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy and Navin Patnaik. Within the Congress too, the old guard—and some members of the G23—would be happy to see Pawar take the lead. Already in a post Ahmed Patel Congress there is a faction that is feeling at odds with Rahul Gandhi’s team, and therein comes the rub. What if Pawar would not limit his ambitions to just UPA chairperson but also make a bid to break the Congress? Apart from the disgruntled old guard, he would be able to woo back former Congress leaders such as Mamata and Jagan back into the fold. But, what is working against the 80-year-old Pawar is his own health and the age factor. He doesn’t have time on his side to pull off a coup of this magnitude. What he can pull off, however, would be the UPA chairmanship.

There have been precedents where an alliance is headed by someone not belonging to the largest party. N.T. Rama Rao was the chairperson of the National Front despite the fact that the TDP wasn’t the single-largest party in the grouping; George Fernandes had been the convener of the NDA during the Vajpayee era and so on. So, Pawar not only has the ability, he also has a case. In fact since the Congress is the only pan-India party in the UPA, it is constantly negotiating regional alliances at the state level with the UPA partners. And there it faces a contradiction; for as Congress president, Sonia Gandhi has had to ensure that the party gets the best deal, but as the UPA chairperson she has to ensure that the seats are shared in a manner that is best placed to beat the BJP. And this is not always in the Congress favour. Take the example of Bihar, if the Congress had contested less seats, perhaps the Mahagathbandhan would have been able to defeat the NDA? Or what happened in Uttar Pradesh with the 2017 alliance with the Samajwadi Party. To further buttress the point, we have a successful case study of an instance when the Congress is not the architect of the alliance, as is what happened in Maharashtra post-Assembly polls. In fact it was Pawar who crafted that alliance.

Yes, one has followed Pawar’s career closely and there has been more than one instance when personal ambition has got the better of him. So one can understand the Gandhis being wary of giving him the keys to the chicken coop. But, these are desperate times, and right now Pawar seems the Opposition’s best bet to take on the BJP. But when handing over the keys, keep changing the locks.

The Amaravati agitation over the issue of “one state, one capital” has completed one year, and farmers, women and youth protestors have sworn to continue further till CM Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy withdraws its plan for building three capitals.

The agitators planned rallies and public meetings to mark the anniversary of their protests, which coincided with Jaganmohan Reddy’s tour to Delhi. The Andhra Pradesh CM is expecting to seek the Central government’s support for his move to shift the state capital to Visakhapatnam.

BJP leaders in Andhra Pradesh have been saying repeatedly that their party has taken a stand for Amaravati to continue as the capital city. Andhra Pradesh BJP chief Somu Veeraju reiterated the point recently, ahead of the Tirupati bypolls. Parakala Prabhakar, husband of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has even come out with a film expressing anguish over the ‘destruction’ of Amaravati.

The TDP and Jana Sena Party are also supporting Amaravati as the only capital city, and the YCP think tank and MPs are also making every effort to get a grip over the issue before it slips out of control. Needless to say that CM Jaganmohan Reddy is now fighting a lonely battle against multiple parties and sections of society.

Political analysts are saying that this is the critical juncture when the AP CM needs to secure the positive nod of PM Modi and Amit Shah for his ‘three capitals’ plan. While the Central government has filed an affidavit in the high court saying that the decision about the capital is completely under the purview of the state government, the BJP continues to oppose the three capital formula on the ground.
