The controversial spread led to protests outside its office and condemnation online, with critics calling it harassment and demanding a public apology.
</excerpt>

A Hungarian newspaper has faced criticism after inviting readers to submit photos of women in short skirts, prompting a public backlash and protests by women’s rights groups. According to news website Telex, the offending spread appeared in Metropol, a daily publication, in its June 4 issue.

The photos of women in skirts were allegedly snapped in public places such as streets and subways, without the consent or knowledge of the photographed individuals.

‘The Shorter, the Better’

The feature was in Metropol’s regular “Take a photo and send it in!” page, already infamous for divisive entries. This time, the spread came with a caption that read: “The shorter, the better.”

The post below it read, “This is undoubtedly true of fashion, if not life. But in the case of dresses and skirts for girls, it is undoubtedly true with the start of summer.”

The offending words and unasked photographs elicited fierce protests both online and off.

Public Protest Outside Publisher’s Office

It was reported by HVG.hu that 50 to 60 protesters marched in front of Mediaworks, the publishing company behind Metropol, to demand answers. Protesters waved signs bearing messages like “Harassment is not journalism” and “My body is not an object,” criticizing the editorial decisions of the newspaper.

Others demanded that Metropol issue a formal apology, which is given for free and is affiliated with Hungary’s governing regime.

Social Media Users React

The outrage was also directed at online websites, as the users criticized the motive and the message behind the photo call. A user on Reddit posted, “So is the purpose to titillate the paper’s (presumably straight male) readers, or to shame women wearing short skirts? Both?”

A person called it, “State sponsored harassment of young women.”

Repeated these words, a commenter contributed, “Traditionalism. They want women to be domestic servants with ‘modest dress’ outside the bedroom. This kind of harassment is intended to drive women in that direction.”

The controversy touches on longstanding issues about privacy, consent, and media ethics in Hungary’s changing media environment.

</excerpt>

In a historic ruling on Wednesday, the United Kingdom’s Supreme Court held that the Equality Act 2010’s legal definition of “woman” is strictly a biological female. The unanimous decision explained that transwomen, despite having gender recognition certificates, are not women for gender-based equality protections.

“The unanimous decision of this court is that the terms woman and sex in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex,” stated Justice Patrick Hodge as he delivered the ruling.

That was a ruling resulting from a 2018 law enacted by the Scottish Parliament mandating 50 per cent representation of women on Scottish public body boards. The law defined transwomen as women, a definition now ruled incompatible with the Equality Act by the court.

Equality Act Provides Protection — But Specifies Sex as Binary

The Supreme Court highlighted the fact that while transgender people enjoy strong legal safeguards, such as against discrimination and harassment, those rights are secured under the characteristic of gender reassignment, and not sex.

“The Equality Act 2010 protects transgender people, not only against discrimination via the protected characteristic of gender reassignment, but also against direct discrimination, indirect discrimination, and harassment in substance in their acquired gender,” Hodge explained.

The court pointed out that making sex “certified sex” would weaken the coherence and clarity of the law by creating mixed or “heterogeneous” groups.

“The definition of sex in the Equality Act 2010 makes clear that the concept of sex is binary, a person is either a woman or a man,” said the ruling. “Persons who share that protected characteristic for the purposes of the group-based rights and protections are persons of the same sex and provisions that refer to protection for women necessarily exclude men.”

Women’s Rights Group Welcomes Ruling

For Women Scotland, the women’s rights organisation, welcomed the decision confirming their view, which had been held since the very start, that women are protected on the grounds of their biological sex.

“This has been a really, really long road. Today the judges have said what we always believed to be the case, that women are protected by their biological sex,” said the organisation.

“Sex is real and women can now feel safe that services and spaces designated for women are for women and we are enormously grateful to the Supreme Court for this ruling.”

The woman driver fled the scene, and police have registered a case following a complaint by the child’s father.
</excerpt>

A five-year-old boy was badly injured when he was run over by a car inside the SG Grand Society in Rajendra Nagar Extension, Ghaziabad, at around 4:30 PM on February 24. The woman who was driving stopped for a second and fled the spot thereafter. The shocking footage from the CCTV has created an outrage among the residents.

Woman Escapes

The CCTV recordings show that a white Honda City entered the society premises and ran into the child who was playing with other children. The front wheel of the car ran over his body, causing him to suffer a fractured right thigh bone, and several cuts to his right hand, left leg, and back.

Despite his critical condition, the child has fortunately stopped short of dying. A woman, identified as Sandhya, stopped the vehicle, got out, and assessed the child, but after a minute, fled the scene.

Investigation by Police

Following the grievous incident, the victim’s father complained to the Nandgram police station. Authorities have filed charges against Sandhya under Sections 281 and 125B of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).

The police then started an active investigation to bring the responsible party to justice for the suffering child. The child is receiving medical treatment at Atlanta Hospital in Vasundhara. As for his medical report, his condition is stable but serious.

The incident has drawn wide condemnation from residents of SG Grand Society, who are calling for strict legal action against the negligent driver. The residents also called upon the authorities to impose stringent traffic rules in their residential areas to prevent such reckless driving in the future.

</excerpt>

In the United Kingdom, women are facing significant delays in accessing gynecological care, with many opting to undergo hysterectomies in the private sector to bypass lengthy NHS waiting lists. The procedure, which is commonly performed to treat conditions such as fibroids, heavy periods, and chronic pain, has seen a sharp rise in cost. The increase in private healthcare fees, attributed to both rising demand and long NHS waiting times, has left many women with few choices but to pay thousands of pounds to get the treatment they need.

The Strain on the NHS and Rising Waiting Times

The National Health Service (NHS) in the UK has long been a cornerstone of the country’s healthcare system, providing affordable and accessible medical care to its citizens. However, years of chronic underfunding and increased pressure on the system have led to mounting delays for non-emergency medical procedures, including gynecological treatments. As of November 2023, over 584,000 women in England were on a waiting list for gynecological care, and a significant number of these women faced waits of over a year for treatments such as hysterectomies. These conditions, including fibroids and endometriosis, can cause intense pain and have a major impact on women’s overall health and well-being.

The situation worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic, which exacerbated delays and further strained the NHS. Between 2020 and 2021, the number of women waiting for gynecological care more than doubled from 360,000 to nearly 750,000. These delays have forced many women to explore alternatives in the private healthcare sector, where the cost of a hysterectomy has risen sharply in recent years.

The Rising Cost of Private Hysterectomies

In the private sector, the cost of a hysterectomy has soared by 19% from 2021 to 2022, with the average price rising from £7,385 to £8,795. Some regions have seen even higher price increases. For instance, in the South West of England, the cost of the procedure increased by 22%, while in the West Midlands, prices rose by 18%. These price hikes are particularly concerning for women who are already struggling with financial difficulties due to long NHS waiting times and the economic challenges posed by the pandemic.

The highest reported price for a hysterectomy in the private sector was £11,154 in Yorkshire and the Humber, while the lowest was £6,420 in the South West of England. The wide range in prices reflects the disparity in healthcare costs across the country and the lack of regulation in the private sector. Some women may be charged considerably more than others for the same procedure, depending on their location and the hospital they choose.

Why Are Prices Rising?

The rise in the cost of private hysterectomies can be attributed to several factors. First, the chronic underfunding of the NHS has led to a significant backlog of patients waiting for gynecological care, creating a surge in demand for private healthcare services. The growing number of women seeking private treatment to avoid long waits has put pressure on private hospitals to raise prices.

Second, the private healthcare sector is not immune to the broader economic challenges facing the UK. High inflation, rising operating costs, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the healthcare system have all contributed to the increased prices for medical procedures. However, critics argue that private healthcare providers are taking advantage of the NHS’s shortcomings and profiting from the delays in the public system.

David Rowland, director of the Centre for Health and the Public Interest, pointed out that the increasing cost of private hysterectomies is symptomatic of the wider issue of NHS underfunding. The private healthcare sector, he argued, is exploiting the weaknesses in the public system by inflating prices and capitalizing on the desperation of women seeking treatment.

The Impact on Women’s Health

The delayed access to gynecological care has far-reaching consequences for women’s physical and mental health. Conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, and chronic pelvic pain can be debilitating, causing long-term discomfort, infertility, and emotional distress. Many women endure months or even years of suffering while waiting for the necessary treatment, which can have a profound impact on their quality of life.

In some cases, the delay in accessing appropriate care can lead to the worsening of symptoms, making treatment more complex and costly when it is finally received. Furthermore, untreated conditions can affect a woman’s ability to work, engage in social activities, and maintain relationships, leading to further mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression.

Dr. Ranee Thakar, president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RCOG), emphasized the devastating impact that untreated conditions can have on women’s lives. The rising number of women seeking private hysterectomies is a clear indication of the urgent need for increased funding and support for NHS gynecological services.

The Role of Private Healthcare Providers

While private healthcare providers are offering a solution for women who need immediate treatment, there are concerns about the high prices and potential for unnecessary treatments. Some women may be pressured into undergoing more invasive procedures than necessary or paying for treatments that may not be the most appropriate for their condition. The lack of transparency in pricing and the variation in costs between hospitals can also leave women vulnerable to being overcharged for their treatment.

Chris Steele, director of MyTribe Insurance Experts, advised women considering private treatment to compare prices across several hospitals to ensure they are getting the best deal. Additionally, he recommended that women consult their GP to see if the NHS could cover the cost of treatment at a private hospital under the patient choice framework.

The Independent Healthcare Providers Network, which represents private healthcare providers, has defended the price increases, attributing them to rising inflation and the increased cost of healthcare provision. The trade body argued that, despite the price hikes, the cost of hysterectomies in the private sector has remained below the rate of inflation over the past four years.

The Way Forward

The rising cost of private hysterectomies, coupled with the long NHS waiting times, underscores the urgent need for reform in the UK healthcare system. The government must prioritize increasing funding for NHS gynecological services to ensure that women receive timely and effective treatment. At the same time, there should be greater regulation of the private healthcare sector to prevent the exploitation of patients during times of public sector strain.

There is also a need for more transparency in private healthcare pricing to help women make informed decisions about their treatment options. By addressing these issues, the UK can ensure that all women, regardless of their financial situation, have access to the care they need without the added burden of exorbitant costs.

In conclusion, the rising cost of private hysterectomies is a symptom of deeper issues within the UK healthcare system, including NHS underfunding and increasing demand for private healthcare. The government must take immediate action to address these challenges and ensure that women receive the care they need in a timely and affordable manner.

</excerpt>

The ongoing global impact of COVID-19 continues to raise questions, especially concerning the long-term effects experienced by those who recover from the initial infection. One such effect that has become a significant concern is long COVID, a condition where individuals experience lingering symptoms long after the acute phase of COVID-19 has passed. These persistent symptoms, which can range from fatigue and brain fog to muscle pain and difficulty concentrating, have severely impacted the lives of many people worldwide.

A recent study has provided crucial insights into the gender differences in the risk of developing long COVID, revealing that women are at a 31% higher risk than men of suffering from this debilitating condition. These findings, published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Network Open, offer a glimpse into why women seem to be disproportionately affected by long COVID. The study, part of the larger ‘RECOVER’ trial led by researchers at The University of Texas, sheds light on several important aspects that can help in understanding and addressing this growing health crisis.

Understanding Long COVID: Symptoms and Prevalence

Long COVID is a term used to describe a range of symptoms that persist long after the acute phase of a COVID-19 infection has subsided. While most individuals recover from COVID-19 within a few weeks, approximately one-third of those infected continue to experience symptoms for months, even years. These symptoms can include chronic fatigue, difficulty concentrating (often referred to as brain fog), headaches, joint pain, and sleep disturbances. Some patients also report shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and loss of taste or smell.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has acknowledged long COVID as a significant post-viral syndrome affecting a substantial portion of the global population. As the pandemic evolves, researchers and healthcare providers are increasingly focusing on understanding the causes, risk factors, and potential treatments for long COVID. The long-term nature of the condition makes it crucial to develop strategies to support those suffering from it.

Key Findings from the RECOVER Study

The RECOVER study, which tracked more than 12,200 participants over a prolonged period, revealed compelling data about the gender-based disparities in the risk of developing long COVID. The study’s results highlight the fact that women, particularly those aged 40-55 years, are significantly more likely to suffer from long COVID than their male counterparts. The study’s key findings include:

31% Higher Risk for Women: Women overall were found to be at a 31% higher risk of developing long COVID compared to men. This was true across various demographics, including race, ethnicity, and the severity of the initial infection.

Increased Risk Among Older Women: The risk for long COVID was found to be particularly elevated in women aged 40-55 years. Among menopausal women, the risk increased to 42%, while non-menopausal women in this age group had a 45% higher risk of developing the condition.

Impact of Menopause: The data suggests that menopausal women might face an even greater risk of developing long COVID, possibly due to hormonal changes that affect immune system function and inflammatory responses.

Biological and Social Factors: The study suggests that both biological processes and social factors contribute to the increased risk of long COVID in women. The exact reasons behind these disparities are still being investigated, but it is likely that sex-specific immune responses, hormonal differences, and genetic factors play a role.

The Importance of Sex-Specific Research

One of the most significant aspects of the RECOVER study is its focus on sex-specific differences in the risk of long COVID. While previous studies have suggested that women are more likely to suffer from autoimmune diseases and post-viral conditions, long COVID represents a novel area of study. Understanding why women are more prone to this condition, and why the risk increases with age, is crucial in tailoring treatments and interventions to address their specific needs.

Dr. Thomas Patterson, the lead researcher of the study and professor of medicine at The University of Texas, emphasized the importance of identifying the biological processes contributing to these sex-specific differences. By understanding these mechanisms, researchers hope to develop targeted drugs and interventions that can help manage and treat long COVID more effectively, particularly in women.

Dimpy Shah, the corresponding author of the study and assistant professor of population health sciences at The University of Texas, added that the findings underscore the need to consider sex as a critical factor in medical treatment and care. “Understanding these differences can help us recognize and treat patients with long COVID more effectively,” Shah explained. As medical professionals continue to investigate the long-term effects of COVID-19, ensuring that treatment protocols account for gender-based differences will be essential to improving patient outcomes.

Risk Factors for Long COVID

The RECOVER study also explored several other factors that could influence the development of long COVID, including vaccination status, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, body mass index (BMI), and COVID-19 variants. These factors can either increase or decrease an individual’s likelihood of developing long COVID, and understanding their interaction with gender-specific factors is critical.

Vaccination Status: The study found that vaccinated individuals were less likely to develop long COVID compared to those who were unvaccinated. This highlights the importance of vaccination in preventing not only the acute infection but also the long-term consequences of COVID-19.

Autoimmune Diseases: People with autoimmune conditions were found to be at a higher risk of long COVID. This aligns with previous research suggesting that individuals with pre-existing autoimmune disorders may have a heightened immune response that can lead to long-term symptoms after an infection.

Diabetes and BMI: Individuals with diabetes or higher BMI were found to be at a greater risk of developing long COVID. These chronic health conditions are known to affect immune system function and may exacerbate the severity of COVID-19 symptoms and the likelihood of long-term complications.

COVID-19 Variants: The study also considered the impact of different COVID-19 variants on the risk of long COVID. While the data suggested some differences, the overall trend of higher risk in women remained consistent across variants.

Addressing the Gender Disparity in Long COVID

The gender disparity in long COVID risk presents both challenges and opportunities for healthcare systems worldwide. As the pandemic continues to evolve, it is essential that healthcare providers take into account the different risks faced by men and women. For women, especially those in midlife and beyond, additional monitoring and support may be needed to help prevent and manage long COVID.

Moreover, the findings of the RECOVER study suggest that more research is needed to explore the specific biological and environmental factors that contribute to the higher risk of long COVID in women. Future studies should aim to uncover the underlying causes of these disparities, with a focus on sex hormones, immune system responses, and genetic predispositions.

The healthcare community should also prioritize developing personalized treatment plans for women suffering from long COVID, taking into consideration their unique risks and needs. This could include a combination of lifestyle modifications, medical interventions, and mental health support, all tailored to reduce the impact of long COVID and improve the quality of life for affected individuals.

Global Implications and the Way Forward

The RECOVER study’s findings have global implications, especially as countries continue to deal with the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. With long COVID affecting millions of people worldwide, it is critical that health systems remain vigilant and proactive in addressing this condition. The gender-based differences in long COVID risk should be factored into national health policies, research funding, and clinical guidelines.

As the world moves forward in its battle against COVID-19, it is clear that women, particularly those in midlife, will require special attention when it comes to long-term care and support. By continuing to study the causes and risk factors of long COVID, researchers and healthcare professionals can develop more effective treatments and interventions, ultimately improving the lives of millions of people suffering from this debilitating condition.

</excerpt>

In the United Kingdom, women have surpassed men in the medical profession, marking a historic shift in gender dynamics. According to recent data, 60% of medical students are now female, a statistic that reflects both societal changes and the growing representation of women in higher education and professional fields. The increasing number of women in medicine is reshaping the healthcare sector, bringing diverse perspectives, leadership styles, and a more inclusive approach to patient care.

Evolution of Women in Medicine

Historically, the medical field has been dominated by men, but over the past few decades, women have been gradually breaking down barriers in what was once considered a male-dominated profession. In the UK, as more women pursue medical degrees, the number of female doctors has steadily increased, leading to a more gender-balanced workforce.

The first significant signs of change appeared in the 1970s when women began entering medical schools in greater numbers. By the late 20th century, women were no longer a rarity in the field. Now, in 2024, women not only make up the majority of medical students but also comprise a significant portion of the medical workforce.

This gender shift has been influenced by several factors, including changing societal attitudes toward women’s education and career opportunities, as well as evolving policies that encourage gender equality in higher education and the workforce. The expansion of medical programs that accommodate work-life balance, including flexible working hours and part-time training, has further facilitated the entry of women into the profession.

Impact on the Healthcare Sector

The increasing presence of women in medicine has had several positive effects on the healthcare system. Research suggests that having a diverse healthcare workforce can improve patient outcomes. Female doctors often bring unique communication styles and emotional intelligence, which can be particularly valuable in patient care. Women are also more likely to emphasize preventive health, mental health care, and patient-centered approaches.

Women in medicine have also become increasingly visible in leadership roles. Although women remain underrepresented in top executive positions, the rise of female consultants, department heads, and researchers is noticeable. This shift not only challenges the status quo but also provides important role models for future generations of women aspiring to become doctors.

Addressing Gender Disparities

While the rise of women in medicine is a significant achievement, challenges remain. There are still disparities in pay and career progression. Women in medicine tend to earn less than their male counterparts, even though they often work as hard and contribute equally to the profession. There are also ongoing challenges related to work-life balance, particularly in the context of family responsibilities.

Additionally, although the number of female medical students has risen, women continue to be underrepresented in certain specialties, such as surgery or cardiology, where the gender divide remains wide. Many female doctors still face the dual pressures of balancing family life with the demanding hours that come with certain medical fields. The lack of mentorship and guidance from senior female professionals can further hinder women’s advancement in these specialized areas.

Efforts are being made to address these challenges. Medical schools and healthcare institutions are increasingly implementing policies to combat gender biases, promote equal opportunities, and support work-life balance for women. Programs designed to encourage female medical students to enter underrepresented specialties are also gaining traction.

The Future of Women in Medicine

Looking ahead, the trend of more women entering the medical profession is expected to continue. The future of medicine will be shaped by a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable workforce, where gender does not determine one’s ability to succeed. As more women enter leadership roles and specialized fields, they will continue to contribute new ideas, innovations, and perspectives that will benefit the healthcare sector.

Additionally, as gender equality continues to be prioritized across various sectors, medical institutions will need to continue addressing challenges related to pay disparity, career progression, and work-life balance to ensure that the gender divide continues to shrink.

Furthermore, there is increasing recognition of the need for diverse voices in medical research and policy development. As women make up a larger portion of medical professionals, their contributions to medical research, public health policy, and clinical practice will help ensure that the needs of all patients, regardless of gender, are met.

The rise of women in the medical field in the UK is a testament to the power of education, social change, and perseverance. Today, women make up the majority of medical students and have carved a permanent place for themselves in the healthcare industry. As the number of women in the medical profession continues to grow, so does their influence in shaping the future of medicine, improving patient care, and contributing to a more equitable and inclusive healthcare system. However, it is vital that challenges related to gender equality, pay disparity, and career advancement are addressed to create a truly level playing field for all healthcare professionals, regardless of gender. With continued efforts, the next generations of female doctors will continue to thrive and break new ground in medicine.

A 29-year-old woman from Illinois has shared her distressing experience of gender discrimination at work, revealing that her probationary period was extended due to the biases of a factory co-owner who does not approve of women in traditionally male roles. The woman, who works as an industrial mechanic at a bread factory, detailed her ordeal in a Reddit post, explaining that despite performing her job well, she is being penalized solely for her gender.

Probation Extension Amid Alleged Gender Bias

In her Reddit post on the “antiwork” community, the woman, who goes by the username “mxqueen976,” explained that she had been working at the factory for nearly three months, during which her job performance had never been questioned. She claimed that she had never been late or called off from work and had received no complaints about her performance. However, she was informed by her employer that her probationary period would be extended for an additional 30 days—not due to her performance but because of the co-owner’s “old school” views against women in the industrial trade.

“I am still in the probationary period (2 out of 3 months done). I was told today that my probationary period will be extended to 4 months instead of 3. Not because of job performance. Zero complaints. Not because of attendance. Never been late or called off. But because I am a woman and the co-owner doesn’t like to see females in traditional male roles,” she shared.

Frustration and Plans for Legal Action

The woman also expressed frustration about her situation, saying, “It is apparently my duty to prove to the co-owner that I am worth keeping on board by forcing me to be on an additional month’s probation.” She shared her concerns about the difficulty of finding work in her field, stating that she regretted entering the trades and was trying to leave her job before it became too late.

In an update, the woman shared that she had taken steps to fight back against the unfair treatment. She had paid the initiation fee for a local union, and a union representative was set to meet with her and the factory’s HR department. “Union representative is on the way! He will arrive at 11 am, so I will force the HR meeting when he arrives,” she wrote, adding that she was relieved to learn that the union would indeed represent her during her probation period, contrary to previous information.

A Call for Change in Workplace Culture

The woman’s experience highlights ongoing challenges women face in male-dominated industries. Her post has garnered widespread support online, with many Reddit users expressing outrage at the discrimination she’s facing. This case sheds light on the need for companies to reassess their policies and workplace cultures to ensure fairness and equality for all employees, regardless of gender.

As the situation unfolds, the woman’s story serves as a reminder of the obstacles women continue to face in traditionally male-dominated roles and the importance of standing up against workplace discrimination.

</excerpt>

In a tragic incident, the family of a woman from China is suing a clinic in Nanning for 1.2 million yuan (approximately $168,000) following her death after undergoing six cosmetic surgeries within a 24-hour period. The woman, identified as Ms. Liu, traveled from her rural hometown in Guigang, Guangxi province, to the clinic for multiple procedures on December 9, 2020. To finance the surgeries, Liu reportedly took out a loan of over 40,000 yuan.

Series of Surgeries Ends in Fatal Complications

Liu’s series of cosmetic procedures began on the afternoon of December 9 with eyelid and nose surgeries that took five hours. This was followed by thigh liposuction, with the extracted fat then transferred to her face and breasts on the morning of December 10 in another five-hour procedure. Tragically, after her discharge on December 11, Liu collapsed near the clinic’s elevator. Although clinic staff acted quickly, she was rushed to The Second Nanning People’s Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed her cause of death as “acute respiratory failure due to a pulmonary embolism after liposuction.” Liu left behind two young children, aged eight and four.

Legal Proceedings and Compensation Dispute

Following Liu’s death, her family filed a lawsuit at the Jiangnan District People’s Court in Nanning, demanding compensation for their loss. Her husband claimed the clinic initially offered 200,000 yuan in settlement, which he refused, requesting at least one million yuan. Although investigations confirmed the clinic had the necessary licenses and that doctors followed standard procedures for fat removal, the court cited medical errors, including the clinic’s failure to assess risks for venous blood embolism. Initially, the court ruled the clinic fully responsible, ordering a 1 million yuan compensation, but later reduced it to 590,000 yuan due to shared liability between the clinic and Liu’s health condition.

The tragic case has sparked discussions on the safety of intensive cosmetic surgeries and the need for comprehensive risk assessments.

</excerpt>

The earth is filled with diverse locations, each with its own serene beauty and religious significance. While many tourist spots are well-known for their picturesque allure, every region boasts its unique set of spiritual beliefs. Though India is famed for its vast array of temples dedicated to various deities, numerous Hindu temples exist in countries like Indonesia and Cambodia. Today, however, we will focus on a particular temple that stands out.

In India, it is common for devotees to ring the temple bell in hopes of having their wishes fulfilled. People often visit temples to pray for the well-being of their families and for the long lives of their spouses and children. However, there is a special temple that serves as a sanctuary for women facing marital abuse. Known as the “divorce temple,” this location is believed to offer refuge and liberation to wives who endure mistreatment from their husbands.

Watch:

Matsugaoka Tokei-ji Temple

This temple is the Matsugaoka Tokei-ji in Japan, a site with a rich history spanning centuries. Historically, Japanese law favored men in divorce proceedings, leaving women with little recourse when they suffered abuse from their partners. The Matsugaoka Tokei-ji temple became a sanctuary for these women, providing them a place where they could seek support. Women who experienced domestic violence were welcome to enter this temple, where they could obtain freedom from their marriages.

Story Behind The Temple

Established around six hundred years ago in Kamakura, Japan, the temple was built by a nun named Kakusan and her husband, Hojo Tokimun. Although Kakusan was unhappy in her marriage and unable to divorce her husband, she found solace in this temple.

Originally, women could spend three years at the temple if they wanted to file for divorce, but this period was later reduced to two years. For a long time, men were prohibited from entering the temple. In 1902, a male abbot was appointed following the control of Engaku-ji, allowing men to visit the site.

Today, the Matsugaoka Tokei-ji Temple does not engage in any legal divorce matters; however, it is remembered as a historical refuge for women seeking safety and empowerment. The temple features beautiful architecture and is surrounded by stunning gardens, symbolizing a powerful representation of women’s liberation.

</excerpt>

“Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” – Dolly Parton
Life is all about living dreams, doing the best for our family and ourselves and pursuing our goals. But today the scenario has changed a lot. We all have started living only to fulfil our materialistic goals and have forgotten that in this pursuit we might have some other things that are missing out. Moreover, when we talk about women when we talk about women and that too working women. In today’s scenario if we will talk about working class, it’s quite challenging to spare time for ourselves because we are always busy in our daily routine, at home as well as in office without even giving a thought about our only life given by God and the purpose of our life. Many people, particularly in high-pressure jobs, can become so focused on career advancement and financial success that they neglect their personal lives. Now the need of our life urges us to find a harmonious balance, reminding us that life encompasses more than just work.

In this situation its really crucial for working woman for spent few hours or even few minutes for herself. Many working women face what is often termed the “second shift,” where after a long day at work, they return home to fulfil domestic duties and caregiving roles. This dual burden can lead to physical and emotional exhaustion, making it difficult to find time for self-care or personal interests. The expectation to excel in both professional and personal spheres can create immense pressure. Cultural norms also often dictate that women should be primary caregivers while also succeeding in their careers. This societal pressure can make it challenging for women to prioritize their own needs and aspirations.
Now the question arises that who is responsible for this and what can be the solution for solving this problem which contributes to work life balance.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the grind of work. The pursuit of career success and financial stability can often overshadow other important aspects of life, such as family, friendships, and self-care. True fulfilment comes from a holistic approach to life. While earning a living is crucial, it should not come at the expense of personal happiness and well-being. Engaging in hobbies, nurturing relationships, and spending quality time with loved ones are essential for a balanced and satisfying life.

Achieving work-life balance is a significant challenge for many working women, but employers play a crucial role in making this balance attainable. Organizations that do not actively promote work-life balance may find themselves losing talented women who feel overwhelmed and undervalued. Employers can take responsibility and contribute to a healthier work environment.
Employers should offer flexible working hours that allow women to manage their work alongside personal commitments, such as childcare or education. Providing the option to work from home can significantly reduce commuting stress and offer a better balance for women who juggle multiple responsibilities. Organisations Should implement generous maternity and paternity leave policies that support new parents during critical life transitions. Consider providing on-site childcare services or partnerships with local childcare providers to alleviate the burden on working parents. Need also arise to introduce wellness initiatives that focus on mental health, stress management, and physical well-being, helping employees maintain a balanced lifestyle. Access to counselling and support services can be offered to help employees manage personal and professional challenges. Organisations should ensure that job expectations are clear and manageable, preventing the overwhelming workload that often leads to burnout. Conduct regular check-ins with employees to assess their workload and work-life balance, providing a platform for addressing concerns proactively.

While the journey toward work-life balance can be challenging for working women, implementing these solutions can lead to a more satisfying and manageable life. By advocating for flexibility, setting clear boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and fostering a supportive network, women can create a sustainable balance between their professional and personal lives. With conscious effort and supportive environments, achieving this balance is not just a dream—it’s an attainable goal.

Balance between work and life encourages us to take a step back from the hustle and bustle and reflect on our true desires. Ultimately, the insights challenge us to lead lives that are not only productive but also rich in experiences, relationships, and personal satisfaction. Employers have a vital responsibility in supporting work-life balance for working women. By implementing flexible policies, fostering a supportive culture, offering family-friendly benefits, and promoting professional development, organizations can help create an environment where women can thrive both personally and professionally. Recognizing that a balanced workforce leads to increased productivity, job satisfaction, and retention is essential for cultivating a successful and equitable workplace. Ultimately, prioritizing work-life balance is not only beneficial for employees but also for the organization as a whole.

To maintain a balance between work and life, it’s essential to establish boundaries. This involves making conscious decisions about work commitments and carving out time for personal pursuits, thereby preventing work from encroaching on one’s personal time. In striving for work-life balance, it’s essential to embrace the idea that perfection is unattainable. Life is inherently messy and unpredictable. People have to accept that it’s okay not to have everything figured out and to prioritize what truly matters to us, even if it means letting some things go.

It can be concluded that employers play vital role in making balance between work and life by facilitating existing employees and make them comfortable and satisfied which will also lead to increase productivity of employees increase their retention rate.

In a matter of seconds, a large empty water tank suddenly plummets from above, striking her. Fortunately, the woman narrowly escapes what could have been a life-threatening incident. Following the fall, a man rushes out from a nearby house to assist her, and they both confront an individual on the roof from which the tank likely fell.’

</excerpt>

On a chilling November night in 1973, the corridors of Mumbai’s King Edward Memorial Hospital bore witness to a tragedy that would haunt the nation’s conscience for decades to come. Aruna Shanbaug, a vibrant young nurse dedicated to her calling, descended into the hospital’s basement, unaware that her life was about to be irrevocably altered. In the shadows lurked Sohanlal Bhartha, a ward boy whose soul had been consumed by a twisted desire. As Aruna prepared for her next shift, Bhartha struck with a savagery that defied human comprehension. Fearing recognition, Bhartha strangled her with a dog chain, resulting in severe oxygen deprivation to her brain and leaving her in a vegetative state. The attack also damaged her brain stem, condemning her to a bedridden existence for the remainder of her life.

While Bhartha walked free after a mere seven years (which was reduced to six), Aruna remained shackled to her hospital bed, dependent on the compassion of her colleagues who became her family. For 42 agonizing years, Aruna lay trapped in the prison of her own body, her once-bright eyes now vacant, her skilful hands rendered useless. Each spoonful of mashed food, each gentle turn to prevent bedsores, was a testament to their unwavering devotion and a stark reminder of the injustice that had befallen her. In 2011, the Supreme Court recognized passive euthanasia in the Aruna Shanbaug case, permitting the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment for patients unable to make informed decisions.
Fast forward 50 years to August 9, 2024. A young doctor, exhausted and sleep-deprived after a gruelling 36-hour shift at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, sought a moment’s respite in a seminar room. This postgraduate trainee, dedicated to healing others, could not have foreseen the horror that awaited her. The subsequent post-mortem report would churn even the strongest stomachs, revealing the brutal nature of the attack. The tragedy ignited a nationwide doctors’ strike, as medical professionals united in solidarity with their fallen colleague.

One haunting question echoes: As a woman, what was her fault? Her only “crime” was being a working woman, a healthcare professional committed to caring for patients. Why was such cruelty inflicted upon those who dedicate their lives to caring for others? This incident forces us to confront a chilling reality: Where is our country headed if we can’t protect those who protect us? How can we call ourselves a civilized society when those who heal are themselves subjected to such inhumane treatment? The parallels between this case and Aruna Shanbaug’s tragedy from half a century ago are both striking and disheartening, reminding us of the long road ahead in ensuring the safety and dignity of healthcare workers, particularly women. It is undeniable that this issue is about safeguarding our doctors, but the underlying problem remains that women in our country are not safe at all. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat to women’s safety in India, particularly in professional spaces.

The safety of our healthcare workers is paramount, but it’s just one facet of the larger issue of women’s safety in India. We must strive to build a society where no woman lives in fear, regardless of her profession or background. While legislative measures are crucial, they alone cannot address the deep-rooted cultural issues that contribute to violence against women There’s an urgent need for a societal shift in attitudes towards women professionals, particularly in male-dominated spaces.

In a stark reminder of the deeply ingrained societal norms, a recent event organized for female lawyers—another male-dominated profession—brought to light an unsettling reality. The invitation explicitly stated it was a dance and music party strictly for women. Yet, when I questioned the male members about their attendance, I was met with the response, “Someone has to make sure that they are safe and they get home safely, the singers, the band, the service staff are all males.” This incident prompts a troubling question: Why do women, who have proven their strength and capability by entering challenging professions like law, still require male protection in social settings? Is it that men are more acutely aware of the potential threats posed by other men and the level of depravity some of them may be capable of; while women remain blissfully ignorant? The irony deepens when we consider that even those of us who question these norms find ourselves perpetuating them.

One night, I found myself staying awake beyond my usual hours to ensure female students returned home safely after a university event, even calling male students to confirm the women’s safe arrival. This cognitive dissonance between our ideals of women’s independence and our instinctive protective behaviours underscores the complex, deeply rooted nature of gender dynamics in our society. It serves as a poignant reminder that true equality and safety for women remain elusive, even in seemingly progressive professional circles.

Horrific incidents like sexual assault, leave indelible scars not just on the victims, but on their families, colleagues, and the entire medical community. The young doctor in Kolkata, like Aruna before her, had dreams, aspirations, and loved ones waiting for her to return home. One can scarcely fathom the depths of anguish that her parents endured upon seeing their daughter’s body, once full of life and promise, now lying motionless and grotesquely distorted. I can’t help but wonder about the societal confrontation and pressure her father must have braved in providing her an education, and how many people must have advised against sending his daughter to medical college. Tragically, incidents like these validate the backward thinking of those who argue against women’s higher education, allowing them to say, “See, this is what happens when a girl goes out into the world.” Such attitudes perpetuate a cycle of fear and restriction, threatening to undo hard-won progress in women’s empowerment and education. Her colleagues, who had shared countless shifts and moments of camaraderie, now face the trauma of losing a friend and the fear that they could be next. The ripple effects of such violence extend far beyond the immediate tragedy, eroding the trust and safety that should be fundamental in any free society.

It forces us to confront an uncomfortable truth: in failing to protect our girls, we are failing ourselves. Each attack on a woman is an attack on the very fabric of our society, tearing at the bonds of care and compassion that hold us together. As we grapple with these harsh realities, we must ask ourselves: How many more Arunas and unnamed victims must we mourn before we take decisive action to create a truly safe environment for women? When one contemplates the final, terrifying moments of the Kolkata victim’s life, the haunting words quoted by Justice Katju in Aruna’s case resonate with chilling relevance. Mirza Ghalib’s poignant verse, “Marte hain aarzoo mein marne ki, Maut aati hai par nahin aati” (One dies longing for death, but death, despite being around, is elusive), takes on a devastating new meaning.

</excerpt>

As we all know by now, the recent rape case at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College has reignited the demand for a special law or new legislation to protect female staff in hospitals. Over the past few years, we have witnessed how the government has enacted and amended rape laws in response to public outcry. From the Bhanwari Devi case, which resulted in the Supreme Court’s Vishakha Guidelines of 1997, through to Nirbhaya (2012), bringing sweeping and radical changes to criminal laws including amendments to Juvenile Justice Act where Justice Verma Committee recommendations were implemented.

However, these changes in the law have not stopped the rape cases numbers from increasing. A woman is sexually assaulted every 15 minutes across the country, according to a government report – and in 2022, police received 31,000 reports of rape. This is evident because the number of rape cases has not decreased, even with changing laws. Clearly, our legal system has not made an impression deterrent in society. But in such situations, who should be held accountable? Let’s take the recent R.G. Kar case as an example to discuss this problem. It was found that several corruption cases had been registered against the principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, yet no action was taken against him. Why? Despite allegations and evidence being presented to the appropriate authority, no steps were taken. In fact, those who filed complaints were threatened by government officials and transferred from R.G. Kar Hospital. This clearly indicates corruption and a misuse of the powers given to the executive body.

In India, the doctrine of the separation of powers is followed. This constitutional law doctrine divides government responsibilities into three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. The goal is to prevent any one branch from having too much power and to provide checks and balances. Each branch is given certain powers to check and balance the others. However, in reality, we see a dominance and overlapping of power, undermining this principle. Considering this recent case when it mentioned by the legislature that the medical college has to follow certain guidelines for their staff and patients when why there is no check system in the medical institutions? Its compulsory for everyone to follow Vishakha Guidelines in the workplace but how many institutions or workplace are actually following this guideline strictly. In the judiciary, for instance, the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 2013 mandates that trials for certain offenses must be completed within two months of the chargesheet being filed. The Act also requires that trials be held daily, with adjournments allowed only for compelling reasons that must be recorded. However, the pressing question remains: how many cases have actually been resolved within this timeframe? In rape cases, the victim and her family are repeatedly traumatized—not just by the crime itself but also by society, the media, the police, and the judiciary. Even if justice is eventually served, they often find that half of their lives and finances have been consumed by court fees, leaving them in a state of despair.

When the accused comes from an influential family, as in the Jessica Lal murder case, the pursuit of justice can become even more prolonged. If we truly want to control crime in our society, we must enforce a proper separation of powers and, to do that, we must first tackle corruption. Corruption is the root cause of society’s apathy, where people believe that filing a case or protesting is futile because no one will hear their plea. Even if they manage to file a case, they are often pressured to withdraw it or threatened by goons.

This is the current reality in India. The situation cannot be changed merely by enacting new laws; it requires proper implementation and execution of existing ones. In light of the recent R.G. Kar case, it’s time for a mass feminist movement—one where every woman, whether working or not, student or not, regardless of caste, creed, religion, or marital status, raises her voice against corruption, the system, and those responsible for our protection who fail to fulfil their duties. It’s time for another “Me Too movement” but this time it should be a “Safety Movement in the Workplace”. With this movement, women and female students from all sectors across India can highlight security issues they face in their workplaces so that by gathering information from their grievances, government considers can frames uniform laws and policies regarding workplace safety.

Tanny Bhattacharjee, a yoga instructor with over 120,000 Instagram followers, expressed confusion about the incident, stating, “What do you think is the problem? I don’t know what’s happening.” Reactions to the video have been polarized, with some condemning the elderly woman’s actions and others supporting her stance.

Instagram comments reveal this divide. One user argued, “Shorts have nothing to do with society. It’s your mentality. By the way, why is the aunty wearing a saree with a crop top showing her stomach?” Another commenter criticized the city’s progress, saying, “Bengaluru is going backwards.”

Support for the elderly woman was also apparent, although some suggested Bhattacharjee should have ignored the incident. Bhattacharjee responded, “I agree that ignoring her was the right approach, and we did try to do that as we headed to the car park. However, she began following us, yelling in public, and even stopping other vehicles to point out my shorts to other men. Just to clarify, I wasn’t filming content; I was simply on my way back to the car, and she persisted in this behavior solely because I was wearing shorts.”

The video underscores ongoing tensions between traditional values and modern dress codes, highlighting the clash over personal freedoms and societal expectations.

You should aim to be successful, but not too successful. Otherwise, you would threaten the man.” This poignant statement by acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie cuts to the heart of a pervasive issue in societies worldwide: the glorification of self-sacrifice in women. Society celebrates these acts of self-sacrifice as the pinnacle of womanhood, but at what cost? This cultural expectation, while often disguised as virtue, carries a hefty price tag for women’s personal growth, ambition, and overall well-being.
</excerpt>

“We say to girls, you can have ambition, but not too much. This issue is deeply intertwined with a woman’s self-perception and sense of self-worth. The stark reality is that women often treat others far better than they treat themselves. Despite the countless affirmations from glamorous celebrities on television, proclaiming with flair that “we’re worth it!”, the message fails to truly resonate. Deep down, many women struggle to genuinely believe in their own value and worthiness. This disconnect between external messages of empowerment and internal feelings of inadequacy further complicates the cycle of self-sacrifice, making it challenging for women to prioritize their own needs and aspirations.

Women find themselves perpetually caught in a tug-of-war between “should” and “could.” Society’s relentless expectations weigh heavily, dictating what we should do, how we should act, and who we should be. These “shoulds” echo loudly in our minds, drowning out our own desires and potential. Meanwhile, our inner selves scream in frustration, yearning to break free and explore what we could do if unburdened by these expectations. The “coulds” represent our untapped potential, our dreams, and our true aspirations. Yet, all too often, the “shoulds” win out, leaving us wondering about the lives we could have lived if we had dared to prioritize ourselves. During a recent trip, I travelled with a woman who, in her youth, was a national-level shooter. As we discussed the recent Olympic triumph of a young Indian shooter, she reminisced about her own days on the range, the dreams she had held, and the career she was forced to abandon. At the peak of her talent, she was expected to step aside, to prioritize marriage and motherhood. The whispers of “should” — “You should get married now,” “You should start a family” — became a silent stranglehold on her aspirations. This talented athlete, who could have been a national hero, was instead steered toward a life of domesticity.

The answer to why we struggle to extend the same care and encouragement to ourselves that we readily give to others lies, in part, in our own self-perception and the knotty issue of glorification of self-sacrifice. Perhaps we’ve internalized the notion that our worth is intrinsically tied to how much we give of ourselves. We feel we’re only a worthy mother, a worthy daughter, or a worthy wife when we consistently put the needs of others above our own.

This twisted logic equates self-sacrifice with virtue, creating a dangerous cycle where our own well-being is perpetually sidelined. We’ve been conditioned to believe that prioritizing ourselves is selfish, when in reality, it’s an essential act of self-preservation and personal growth. Some women might be grappling with the question of whether it’s morally permissible to prioritize ourselves, but we need to reframe this thinking entirely; I would even argue that it’s our moral obligation to do so.

By nurturing our own well-being and pursuing our aspirations, we not only improve our own lives but also become better equipped to positively impact those around us. Self-care and self-actualization aren’t selfish indulgences; they’re necessary steps towards becoming the fullest, most authentic versions of ourselves – versions that can contribute more meaningfully to our families, communities, and society at large.

Sometimes, we’re confronted with disheartening statements like, “You’re a woman at the end of the day. What will you achieve by pursuing a career, a dream, or a passion? It’s not like you’ll become a man or replace a man.” But this line of thinking misses the point entirely. The goal isn’t to become or replace men; it’s about recognizing that our girls and women have the same right to self-fulfilment and self-realization as men and boys do. This right to pursue our passions, to chase our dreams, and to seek personal growth isn’t gender-specific – it’s a fundamental human need. When we deny women and girls this opportunity, we’re not just limiting their potential; we’re robbing society of the unique contributions and perspectives they could offer. It’s crucial to understand that empowering women to pursue their ambitions doesn’t diminish men; rather, it enriches our collective human experience and drives progress for everyone. By challenging these outdated notions, we pave the way for a more equitable world where every individual, regardless of gender, has the chance to explore their full potential and lead a fulfilling life.

The story of the former national-level shooter serves as a stark reminder of how societal expectations can strangle a ‘could’ with a ‘should’. She is now a proud mother of three children, including two daughters, and I cannot help but wonder about the legacy she might have created especially for women around her—a legacy her daughters could have taken pride in regarding their mother’s achievements. Her story is not unique; it echoes the experiences of countless women who have had to sideline their dreams and ambitions in the face of societal pressure.. It’s time to dismantle the myth that glorifies self-sacrifice, that tells us putting our own needs behind those of others is a sign of strength. We must challenge this narrative and tell our sisters that it is not wrong to prioritize our own well-being. By doing so, we’re not just improving our own lives, but setting an example for future generations of women who will learn that their dreams and ambitions are just as valid and important as anyone else’s. Dare I add a twist to the famous Rumi quote? Dear woman, out beyond the ideas of “should,” there is a garden of “could” – you will meet yourself there.

</excerpt>

Despite living in a society where there is a perpetual need and urge to comprehend everything, something as basic and natural as menstruation is wrapped in ignorance, taboo, and shame. While menstruation is an inevitable aspect of life for millions of girls and women throughout the world, an alarming proportion of them continue to have no access to menstrual hygiene products, which has a direct impact on their physical and more especially, reproductive and mental health. The prevailing social norms often foster misconceptions and prejudices regarding menstruation, influencing how it is perceived and managed. This, in turn, highlights the need for open discussion and menstrual health education among all genders in society.

Menstrual Health Awareness: Need of the hour

Menstruation is considered taboo in many countries and it is connected with so many myths and stigmas that make women perceive it as ‘filthy’ and ‘impure’. This further promotes the widespread belief that women have an inferior status in society. According to UNICEF, only thirteen per cent of girls are aware of menstruation before menarche, demonstrating a lack of education and knowledge about this natural process.

Therefore, it becomes a matter of importance that educational and awareness programs involve males and community leaders to improve social views about menstruation. Furthermore, awareness campaigns can highlight menstruation hygiene’s importance, the challenges women face and the solutions available to them. Schools can also play an important role by adding menstrual health education to their curricula, giving children the right understanding from a young age. Community-based initiatives can even assist in reaching out to women and girls who do not attend school, ensuring they have access to menstrual health education.

Impact of Menstrual Health Awareness on Empowering Women

Menstrual health awareness and open discussion can help empower women in a variety of areas. Some of them are as follows:

Education: Providing extensive education on reproductive health and the importance of a normal menstrual cycle to young individuals to understand and develop a positive mindset towards it and learn how to take care of their bodies during that phase. The instruction material must contain information about the signs and symptoms of common gynaecological issues, as well as guidance on how to maintain good period health and cleanliness habits.

Resources: According to the World Bank, more than 500 million girls and women do not have access to menstrual products and facilities. Considering such a situation, in various nations, many measures have been implemented, such as providing free and sustainable sanitary pads to schoolgirls and even exempting menstrual products from taxes. Improved access to sanitary products in countries such as India would be an important step towards ensuring that every woman has the opportunity to take the best care of her menstrual health.

Workplace: Employers can frame policies to help women manage their menstrual health at work. This includes providing women with a private, comfortable location to change into and discard menstrual products, as well as flexible breaks to accommodate their requirements. Women shouldn’t encounter prejudice at work based on their menstrual cycle, particularly if they are entitled to assistance.

Sustainable and Safe Sanitary Products: In order to positively impact women’s opinions regarding the menstrual cycle, it is critical to provide safe and sustainable period products. These products not only help women maintain a healthy body, but they also benefit the world since they are Reusable. Additionally, these products may be considered a long-term investment, as customers are less likely to use items containing chemicals or toxins, lowering their risk of developing reproductive or sexual illnesses.

The Bottom Line

Menstruation is an essential component of women’s existence, and it is a matter of both social justice and human rights to guarantee that females have access to menstrual health services and products. While the worldwide FemTech industry is predicted to reach USD 60 billion by 2027, it is paradoxical that there is still a need to promote discussions regarding menstruation. The taboos and belief systems around periods affect millions of menstruators worldwide, causing continued agony and prejudice where none should exist. As a result, menstrual health and hygiene should be given global priority, where all genders of society work together to improve the lives of women everywhere.

However, women still struggle to attain higher positions, such as sarpanchs.
</excerpt>

Jammu and Kashmir need to see more political participation from women. The political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir poses unique challenges to women’s empowerment. Historically, women have been underrepresented in the region’s political roles. Prior to the 1972 elections, the political scene was almost entirely male-dominated, with no women successfully securing seats. The 1972 elections marked the beginning of female participation in politics, but the success rate for women remained low. Subsequent elections, including those in 1977, saw a slight increase in female candidates, but their success remained limited. The 1983 elections reflected a marginal increase in female candidates, though their representation continued to be minimal.

By 2002, women occupied only 8% of the seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, showing modest progress. The 2011 Panchayati Raj Act, which mandated reserving one-third of seats for women in panchayats, led to a significant increase in the number of female panches. However, women still struggle to attain higher positions, such as sarpanchs.

Conflict’s Role in Limiting Women’s Political Engagement

The ongoing conflict in Jammu and Kashmir has had a profound impact on women’s political participation. Although the situation has improved significantly, there is still much work to be done to encourage more women to engage in politics. A 2020 report by the Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society highlighted the increased risks of violence women face in conflict zones, which hampers their ability to participate in public life. The economic disruption caused by the conflict has disproportionately affected women, as noted in a 2022 UN Women study, leading to lower participation in political activities as women prioritize economic survival over political engagement.

Cultural Barriers and Gender Norms

Cultural norms and traditional gender roles heavily influence women’s political participation in Jammu and Kashmir. Traditional roles often confine women to domestic duties, limiting their time and energy for political involvement. A 2023 study by the Centre for Social Research found that societal expectations continue to place women in secondary roles, with many perceiving politics as an inappropriate field for them. The view of politics as corrupt and dangerous further discourages women from participating. A 2019 survey by the Jammu and Kashmir State Election Commission revealed that 60% of women voters were disillusioned with the political process due to corruption and violence. Societal attitudes favoring male leadership contribute to women’s underrepresentation, with traditional norms often hindering their electoral success. Despite the increase in female candidates in the 2011 Panchayat elections, women remain significantly underrepresented in leadership positions.

Institutional Challenges to Women’s Political Advancement

Institutional barriers also play a significant role in limiting women’s political empowerment. Political parties often provide inadequate support for female candidates. A 2021 report by the Jammu and Kashmir Political Analysis Group found that women candidates typically receive less support in terms of campaign resources and party backing compared to their male counterparts. Additionally, women are underrepresented in decision-making roles within political parties and government structures. For example, in the 2020 Legislative Assembly, only 8 out of 87 seats were held by women, highlighting the lack of female representation in key decision-making bodies. Despite legislative measures like seat reservations in panchayats, women continue to face legal and structural barriers. In the 2016 Assembly elections, only 6% of women were elected to key positions, demonstrating the gap between legislative intent and practical outcomes. In the 2024 Lok Sabha Election, no female candidates were successful, including Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti.

Addressing the Challenges Ahead

The challenges to women’s political empowerment in Jammu and Kashmir are multifaceted, stemming from the impact of conflict, cultural norms, and institutional barriers. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that includes strengthening institutional support, promoting education and awareness, challenging cultural barriers, and ensuring safety and security. By implementing these strategies, the region can move toward a more inclusive and representative political environment, contributing to its democratic development and achieving gender parity.

</excerpt>

The barbaric act of brutally raping and killing a doctor in RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata the other day has remained a shock to the nation and even the whole world. This heart wrenching event raises an old and uncomfortable question: Hum apni suraksha ke liye kis par bharosa karein? And as we recall this tragic event, one has to wonder why we stay with conventional security measures and systems when we can have AI which may contain these act in time. Thus the need for AI and modern securities system has never been more urgent, we have the tools to ensure that tragedies like this one never happen again. So, why aren’t we using them?

To understand how the use of AI can avoid such occurrence like the one that was experienced at RG Kar Medical College, it is necessary to look into details the working of an AI security system. These systems employ sophisticated algorithms that enable it work on a large amount of data obtained from video feeds, motion detectors, and other sensors in real time. Unlike human guards who might miss something or be in the wrong place at the wrong time, AI systems can monitor multiple areas simultaneously without getting tired or distracted.

In case of when AI detects something queer for instance someone has breached a restricted area or is acting in an abnormal manner the AI alerts security whose next course of action is to act. This response is very important is in order to avoid the situation get worst in affecting many lives. And also, one can state that, as the AI system can get acquainted with similar situations, it will enhance its performance in terms of threat identification. This means that the longer the system is in place the more it evolves and develops into a recognized system that can detect certain impending evils.
The development of AI systems shall follow the same fundamental approach as the experienced detective becomes more efficient in solving cases with every single case because AI learns from data and feedback mechanisms.

What I am talking is not a science fiction, it is happening in the other part of world like many states and organization has integrated the Artificial intelligence in their security system. One such example is in the New York there is a City’s Domain Awareness System (DAS), which was built in association with the Microsoft. In this system AI works as it monitors the thousands of CCTV cameras across the city and analyse the real time video feeds and identifies the illicit or suspicious behaviour and then they quickly informed to the security agencies. This system is effective and efficient as it allows the security agencies to respond to the threat in a proactive manner and they can be very much capable of then curb the threats before it escalate into the serious incident, that model of integrating modern technology with the traditional one, can be very much effective and we should adopt also and make and work towards modernising our security measures. Although, we should appreciate the Indian Railway board as they are going to integrate the artificial intelligence systems for the upcoming Kumbh mela to monitor the tracks and it also prevents any damage that may come by antisocial element. This will set an example that AI can be deployed and easily adopted within the established setup and it can also ensure the safety of the entire railway line. This means that by incorporating conventional security measures with artificial intelligence capabilities like what happened during this event, it guarantees that current investments are not thrown away but instead built upon thereby enabling better risk control through active monitoring where necessary.

Had such integrated systems been implemented at RG Kar Medical College, AI might have detected abnormal activities or unauthorized access in real time thus alerting security personnel before the tragic event occurred. The potential of security systems is shown by this successful combination of conventional surveillance and artificial intelligence to protect institutions most likely to be attacked such as hospitals. It also prevent future incidents from happening again.

Analysing the growing incidence of attacks on healthcare personnel along with the understanding that hospitals and medical colleges are weak points, it can be stated that traditional measures taken may not be enough. A camera alone cannot prevent a determined criminal from perpetrating the crime and security personnel cannot also monitor all areas at once, but these two tools can complement each other especially with AI support. AI has the capacity to monitor those areas that may not be easily noticed or are not easily accessible hence the promise of no part of a building is left unmonitored. And also it can be integrated with access control systems which directs only the authorised persons to some specific areas hence reducing cases of intruders who may bring such calamities. Thus, in this sense AI is all seeing protector that is never tired.

An important concern regarding integration of AI in safety is the invasion of privacy, while these systems gives more safety than before, they also bring concerns on excessive surveillance, to which reply at the moment is the Information Technology Act 2000, concerning electronic surveillance and data protection. Section 66E of IT Act deals specifically with privacy protection, making it illegal to capture or distribute pictures/videos without consent where a person expects privacy should prevalence place exist under broader legal provisions relating maintenance public order safety through use such this these there be done. Despite these provisions, there is a need for updating the legal framework so as to accommodate advancements brought about by AI driven security systems.

What happened at RG Kar Medical College must act as a wakeup call for all of us, because we have been negligent or those who risk their lives every day. Thus if at all we are going to avert such experience from happening again AI has to be an integral part of our security systems. The tools are there waiting to be used, let’s protect our institutions together with people who are associated with such institutions either to work or study.

This is not merely about technology, it is about being proactive, assuming responsibility and envisioning what may happen if things are not changed otherwise the tragedy at RG Kar will continue to haunt us in form of similar events that in one way or the other could have been prevented if the correct strategies and adequate equipment were employed. We cannot wait for anything more as this point means entry into the age where everything requires protection and thus is considered as dangerous unless proven otherwise.
There should be no waste of the sorrowing circumstance that follows the tragic event that happened in RG Kar Medical College. We have to make this a moment of change which will push us towards an era where technology is utilised for protection of lives, towards preventing such tragedy and ensuring that such things do not happen in places meant for healing and saving lives again. Well, we now have it in our capabilities to prevent another disaster, so please let’s do it now!

</excerpt>

A 31-year-old female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College retired to sleep in a seminar hall after a gruelling shift in the early hours of a Friday morning. It was the last time she was seen alive.
The following morning, her colleagues made a horrifying discovery: her half-naked body on the podium, bearing extensive injuries. Police later arrested a hospital volunteer worker in connection with what they describe as a case of rape and murder at the 138-year-old institution.
This tragic incident has reignited discussions about the safety of healthcare workers in India, particularly women. As enraged doctors across the country went on strike demanding better protection, the case has exposed the deep-rooted vulnerabilities plaguing the medical profession.

A System Under Strain
At RG Kar Hospital, which sees over 3,500 patients daily, overworked trainee doctors—some working up to 36 hours straight—had no designated restrooms. This forced them to seek rest in a third-floor seminar room, a situation that proved fatal for the young doctor.
Hospital doctors’ experiences highlight female doctors’ grim reality in India’s government hospitals. There are no designated restrooms or separate toilets for female doctors. Some of them might even sleep in an empty patient bed in the ward or a cramped waiting room with a bed and basin.
In a twist of bitter irony, those dedicated to saving lives find themselves fighting for their own safety in the very institutions meant to heal.
Women in Medicine: Progress and Peril
The face of Indian medicine, as claimed by the might of Government Statistics, is changing rapidly.
The National Medical Commission’s 2023 data shows women now make up 42% of registered medical practitioners, up from 35% in 2019. In nursing, women comprise nearly 90% of the workforce, according to the Indian Nursing Council’s latest report.
However, this progress is eclipsed by escalating safety concerns.
The National Crime Records Bureau’s 2023 report indicates a 7.6% increase in crimes against women in healthcare, with 25% involving severe violence, including sexual assault.
Recent incidents highlight this alarming trend. In March 2023, Dr. Priya Mishra, a Delhi hospital resident, was assaulted by a deceased patient’s relatives, suffering a fractured arm and facial injuries. In November, Dr. Sanjana Patil, a Pune gynecologist, endured a six-hour hostage situation by a disgruntled patient’s family.
These aren’t isolated cases. An Indian Medical Association survey in early 2024 revealed that 68% of female doctors experienced workplace violence or harassment in the past year, with 30% feeling unsafe during night shifts. In a cruel twist of fate, as women break glass ceilings in medicine, they find themselves trapped in hospitals of horrors – healing others while their own safety hangs by a thread.
One can’t help but wonder: in a profession dedicated to preserving life, why are we failing to safeguard the lives of those who serve it? And what does this say about our society’s true valuation of women’s contributions to healthcare?

A Culture of Fear for Women in India
The RG Kar Medical College incident epitomizes a pervasive culture of fear among women in India’s professional landscape, particularly in healthcare. Female doctors navigate a minefield of threats daily – from poorly lit hospital corridors to confrontations with aggressive patients.
Many resort to extreme safety measures, even bringing family members to overnight shifts.
In rural areas, the situation is dire. Female doctors in remote health centres face isolation and vulnerability, influencing career choices and exacerbating the rural healthcare divide. This fear reflects broader societal issues, persisting despite laws like the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act of 2013. The National Commission for Women reports a steady rise in workplace harassment complaints, with healthcare prominently featured.

A System in Need of Reform
India’s healthcare system suffers from systemic failures at multiple levels. The absence of a comprehensive federal law protecting healthcare workers and ineffective state legislation leaves medical professionals vulnerable. Healthcare’s status as a state subject under the Indian Constitution results in fragmented policies and implementation across the country.
Political factors complicate matters further. The government’s 2022 directive for enhanced hospital security remains unimplemented mainly due to budget constraints and a lack of political will. The intersection of gender politics and healthcare policy adds another layer of complexity, with women’s concerns often sidelined in policy discussions.

Urgent reforms needed include:
1. Robust federal legislation for healthcare worker protection
2. Mandatory safety audits and infrastructure upgrades in healthcare facilities
3. Integration of violence prevention acts in medical education
4. Fast-track courts for cases against healthcare workers
5. Increased healthcare spending, particularly on safety measures
6. A national database tracking incidents of violence against medical professionals
The medical community’s outcry following the Kolkata incident presents a critical juncture for political leadership to move beyond rhetoric. The health of India’s healthcare system – and its population – depends on creating a fear-free environment for those who heal.
</excerpt>

Who knew a craving for quality baked goods could spark a culinary revolution? Certainly not Aavika Chhawchharia, until she noticed Delhi’s bakery scene was flatter than a failed soufflé. Armed with a whisk and a dream, Aavika and her husband decided to knead some life into the capital’s baked goods market, and voilà! Honey & Dough was born in 2016.

What started as a cozy neighborhood nook for carb enthusiasts has now risen like perfectly proofed dough into a full-fledged café chain. No longer content with merely satisfying sweet tooths, Honey & Dough now tickles taste buds with a menu that reads like a globetrotter’s food diary. Volcano pizzas that erupt with flavor? Check. Burgers so exotic they need their own passports? You bet. Tacos that do the cha-cha in your mouth? Absolutely!

“We wanted to be the Swiss Army knife of bakeries,” quips Aavika, “capable of slicing through any craving, whether it’s for a croissant or a burrito bowl. Our customers demanded more, so we said ‘Oui, oui!’ and went full café.”

With technology more cutting-edge than a bread knife and hygiene standards higher than a soufflé, Honey & Dough has won hearts faster than you can say “Bon appétit!” This French-inspired patisserie, birthed by ANR International Pvt. Ltd. and ANR Foodworks LLP, has become the toast of the town (pun absolutely intended).

Now, like a batch of ambitious cookies, Honey & Dough is ready to spread across India’s baking sheet. By October 2024, they plan to sprinkle five new outlets across Noida, Punjabi Bagh, Model Town, GK, and Gurgaon. Each new café will be a little slice of Paris, minus the accordion players and mimes.

</excerpt>

The journey of women’s rights has been one of perseverance and transformation, marked by both challenges and triumphs. From the earliest struggles for suffrage to today’s ongoing fight for gender equality, women have continuously pushed the boundaries of what society deems possible.

In India, the fight for women’s rights has a rich and complex history. The pre-independence era saw pioneers like Savitribai Phule, who championed education for women, and Sarojini Naidu, who was a prominent voice in the struggle for suffrage and independence. Post-independence, the Constitution laid down the foundation for gender equality, ensuring legal rights for women. However, the battle was far from over. The feminist movements of the 1970s and 1980s, which addressed issues like dowry, domestic violence, and reproductive rights, played a crucial role in reshaping societal norms and pushing for legal reforms.

Despite these advances, the fight for gender equality in India is far from over. Women continue to face significant challenges in many areas, lack of economic opportunities, gendered violence and poor access to education. The literacy rate for women in India- 65% is far below the literacy rate for men. However, in the face of these challenges, countless women have risen to the occasion, proving that when women are determined, they can achieve anything. A poignant example of this determination is seen in the story of the women of Karauni Village in Uttar Pradesh.

In Karauni, 22 women took it upon themselves to address the issue of illiteracy among the women of their village. With the support of DEVI Sansthan, they became volunteers and embarked on a mission to make every woman in Karauni literate. Their dedication and hard work paid off, as they taught all the women in their village how to read, with hundreds passing, changing their lives ahead, making them capable of accessing the basic necessities of society.

This story is not just about literacy; it’s about empowerment. It demonstrates that when women come together with a common goal, they can break through barriers and create lasting change.

DEVI Sansthan, or Dignity Education Vision International has played a significant role in supporting women like those of Karauni Village. The word Devi itself, derived from the Sanskrit word for goddess, symbolizes the strength, dignity, and potential that every woman possesses. The organization is run by a team of devoted women, or “devis,” who are working tirelessly to transform the landscape of literacy and education, not just in India but around the world.

Today, the fight for gender equality has expanded well beyond the legal realm. The recent tragic incident in Kolkata, where a young female doctor was brutally raped and murdered, serves as a stark reminder of the persistent dangers women face. This heinous crime highlights the continuing struggle for safety, justice, and equality. Even after 78 years of independence, the fight against gender-based violence remains a critical issue. Justice still remains elusive for many.

The global movement for gender equality has also been bolstered by international initiatives like the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, which emphasize gender equality as a key component of global development. However, the fight remains an uphill battle. Issues such as gender-based violence, reproductive rights, and the gender pay gap continue to be significant challenges. In India, movements like #MeToo have highlighted the pervasive nature of sexual harassment and assault, pushing for greater accountability and change.

We’ve come a long way in empowering women to reach for the stars, but the journey is far from over.

Amidst these challenges, the stories of warrior women remind us that the fight for gender equality is not just about policy changes or legal victories; it’s about the determination and collective action of women at the grassroots level. When women decide to take control of their lives and their communities, they have the power to bring about profound change.

</excerpt>

The hospitality industry is undergoing a significant transformation, and women are at the forefront of this change. For far too long, the sector has been dominated by men, but the tide is turning. Women are now making their mark, bringing a unique perspective and approach that is redefining the future of hospitality.

One of the most significant contributions women are making is the emphasis on emotional intelligence and empathy. They understand that hospitality is not just about providing a service but creating an experience that resonates with guests on a deeper level. Women-led establishments are sprouting up, offering a distinct ambience and service that prioritizes warmth, comfort, and personalized attention.

Female hospitality entrepreneurs are also driving innovation in the industry. They’re incorporating sustainable practices, supporting local communities, and showcasing authentic cultural experiences. This approach not only resonates with conscious travelers but also sets a new standard for the industry. Women are proving that hospitality can be both profitable and responsible.

Moreover, women are excelling in traditionally male-dominated roles like chefdom and mixology. Their creativity and flair are reimagining culinary landscapes and cocktail culture. They’re introducing new flavors, ingredients, and techniques that are tantalizing taste buds and pushing the boundaries of culinary innovation.

As the industry continues to evolve, the feminine touch will remain a vital force. Women are reshaping hospitality’s future, prioritizing heart, soul, and a deep understanding of human connection. They’re creating spaces that feel like home, where guests can relax, unwind, and be themselves. The result is authentic, unforgettable experiences that redefine the art of hospitality.

In conclusion, the feminine touch is revolutionising the hospitality industry. Women are bringing a unique perspective, emphasis on emotional intelligence, and a commitment to innovation and sustainability. As the industry continues to transform, one thing is clear – the future of hospitality is female.

</excerpt>

Kangana Ranaut has expressed her frustration with the film industry, criticizing its promotion of violence and its poor response to issues of discrimination and sexual exploitation. In a recent interview, Kangana reacted strongly to the Hema Committee’s report, which highlighted severe discrimination and sexual abuse faced by women in Malayalam cinema.

Kangana shared her long-standing concerns about these issues, noting that her efforts to address them have largely been ignored. She voiced her disappointment in industry women who continue to promote item songs and fail to take responsibility for the sexualization of young women.

When asked about the alleged rape culture in the Kerala film industry and whether it is representative of other film industries, Kangana responded sharply. She described the industry as “hopeless” and criticized it for its lack of progress despite her personal sacrifices. “I have put everything at stake, from my career to my choices,” she said. She pointed out that she has faced legal battles and struggled with the MeToo movement, which she feels has not achieved much. Despite her efforts to promote feminist cinema and equal pay, she has faced backlash from other women in the industry.

Kangana reflected on her past appearances, such as her episode on Aamir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate, where she called out problematic portrayals of women in film. She lamented that her criticisms made her many enemies and noted that sexist and violent films continue to perform well at the box office. “I have made everyone my enemy,” she said, expressing her frustration that her efforts have seemingly led to little change.

She also criticized women who participate in item numbers and do not support other women’s work. “I am very disappointed in women who do not promote other women’s work,” she said. Kangana added that some women have questioned her fights and struggles, not understanding that she is fighting for broader change, not just for herself. She feels that her advocacy has cost her opportunities and financial gains.

Looking ahead, Kangana will next be seen in Emergency, where she plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The film, which she directed and wrote, features a cast including Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik. It is set to release in theaters on September 6.

</excerpt>

Japan is launching a new initiative to encourage single women to relocate from Tokyo to rural areas to help address the declining female population in the countryside. This plan is part of a broader effort to counteract the trend of young women moving to Tokyo for education or work and not returning to rural regions, which has led to a significant gender imbalance in these areas.

According to a report, the Japanese government will cover travel expenses for women attending matchmaking events in rural areas and offer additional financial incentives for those who choose to move. Specifically, the initiative will expand an existing subsidy program, providing up to $7,000 to women relocating from Tokyo’s 23 wards to rural areas.

The 2020 national census revealed that outside Tokyo, there are about 9.1 million single women aged 15 to 49, compared to 11.1 million single men, indicating a significant gender gap that is particularly pronounced in rural areas. This disparity is partly due to more women than men moving to Tokyo and staying for extended periods due to educational or professional opportunities.

Japan faces a critical demographic challenge with a declining birth rate, which hit a historic low last year with only 727,277 births recorded. The country’s fertility rate stands at 1.20, far below the replacement level of 2.1 needed to maintain a stable population. This decline poses significant concerns for Japan’s future workforce and economy.

To combat this issue, the government has implemented various initiatives, including financial incentives for couples to have children, expanded childcare facilities, and even a state-backed dating app that uses AI to match singles. These measures are part of a broader strategy to promote marriage and family growth to counteract the demographic decline.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has emphasized the urgency of addressing the falling birth rates, calling it the “gravest crisis our country faces.” While some experts argue against fearing a societal collapse, Japan is actively seeking solutions to promote marriage and increase birth rates to ensure a sustainable future.

Despite Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s repeated assertions that West Bengal is the safest state for women, this horrific crime exposes the administration’s blatant incompetence and disregard for women’s safety. Mamata Banerjee’s political rhetoric is meaningless when women in Kolkata continue to live in fear, exposed to violence and exploitation.
</excerpt>

“Silence gendered violence is woven intricately into the Indian social group; it is only fair to implement social awareness campaigns to assist raise awareness at the grass-root level.” When a criminal offence is committed it is wrong against humanity at large. Every crime against an individual demonstrates the state’s failure to recognize, protect and fulfill its citizen’s human rights. Among one such crime is “Rape”. It is a deep-entrenched social blight. Rape is considered to be, one of the foremost flagitious crimes towards the individual and its individuality.

The brutal rape and murder of a Post-Graduate Trainee Doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College has once again highlighted issues surrounding violence against women, the role of the legal system, and societal attitudes. The state’s safety measures are a cruel joke, fostering a culture of impunity where criminals walk free and victims suffer in silence. Enough with the empty promises—what Bengal needs is real action. The state government must overhaul its approach to women’s safety, from enforcing stringent law enforcement to providing a robust support system for victims.

This tragedy cannot become another statistic in India’s grim record of gender-based violence. The public demands justice, not just for this victim, but for a safer future for all women. The question remains: will the government act decisively, or will it continue to fail its people? The clock is ticking.

Crimes of this brutality—especially those involving rape—are not isolated incidents in India. In 2022, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reported an average of 90 rapes per day. However, authorities acknowledge that the actual number could be much higher, as many rapes go unreported due to societal taboos. Unofficial estimates suggest that over 100 rapes occur daily in India, with a staggering 80% of them classified as brutal. Despite the shocking frequency of such attacks, society and the state have failed to address the root causes effectively.

The 1973 case of Aruna Shanbaug was a grim precursor to today’s epidemic of violence against women. After being raped and left for dead by a ward boy, she remained in a coma for 43 years, lovingly cared for by her colleagues. Her assailant, however, served only seven years in jail. Aruna’s case remained in the media spotlight for decades, yet no sweeping reforms were made to improve the safety of female medical staff. Hospitals like RG Kar Medical College continue to lack basic security protocols, leaving women vulnerable to heinous acts of violence.

Despite the public outcry that followed Aruna’s case, and the more recent protests in Kolkata, most state-run hospitals have not implemented adequate safety measures. The issue of relying on “civic volunteers” instead of trained security personnel has long been a problem in government-run hospitals. These volunteers are often paid meager wages and supplement their income through unofficial means. Many have political affiliations, which give them a degree of immunity from disciplinary action.

Nirbhaya Case Led to Major Reforms
After the equally brutal rape and fatal assault of a 22-year-old physiotherapy intern (called Nirbhaya to conceal her name as mandated by law) that occurred on December 16, 2012, in New Delhi, there were calls for reform in existing laws to deal with such a heinous crime. It did lead to changes in the law but after twelve years, the conclusion remains that the law changed, but much remained the same. Following the Nirbhaya case, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government constituted a committee headed by Justice JS Verma, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to recommend amendments to the Criminal Law to ensure quicker trial and enhanced punishment for criminals accused of committing sexual assault against women.

The committee made some pathbreaking recommendations, some of them were accepted and some were rejected. Considering the committee’s recommendations ‘The Criminal Law (Amendment), Act 2013’ was enacted for effective deterrence against sexual offences. The major changes in the law dealing with sexual offences included expanding the ambit of rape by incorporating new offences such as stalking, acid attacks, and voyeurism into its definition. The mere threat of rape was recognized as a criminal act, subjecting the perpetrator to legal action.

Some of the major changes that the 2013 amendment brought were: Section 166A was inserted after the amendment to make the authorities, like public servants or hospital authorities, liable if they failed to discharge their duties against the victims of the crime.
The newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 which has replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in its section 199 says “Whoever, being a public servant fails to record any information given to him under sub-section (1) of section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 in relation to a cognizable offence punishable under section 64, section 65, section 66, section 67, section 68, section 70, section 71, section 74, section 76, section 77, section 79, section 124, section 143 or section 144 shall be punished with rigorous imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than six months but which may extend to two years, and shall also be liable to fine.”

Loopholes in Existing Legislation
The criminal justice system in India is plagued by delays, resulting in prolonged trials. Despite the establishment of fast-track courts post-Nirbhaya, the pace of justice remains sluggish. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the conviction rate for rape cases in India is dismally low. This delay and uncertainty in delivering justice emboldens perpetrators and deters victims from coming forward Secondly, Laws are only as effective as their implementation. The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013, introduced several provisions to deter sexual violence, including the death penalty for repeat offenders. However, the enforcement of these laws is often inconsistent. Police apathy, lack of sensitivity, and corruption further hinder effective implementation. Thirdly, while legal provisions exist to protect and support victims of sexual violence, the actual support system is often lacking. Victims frequently face societal stigma, lack of proper medical and psychological support, and inadequate witness protection programs. This systemic failure discourages many from reporting crimes. Fourthly, deep-rooted patriarchal attitudes and victim-blaming culture continue to persist in Indian society. These attitudes not only perpetuate violence against women but also create an environment where victims are discouraged from seeking justice.

Proposals for Stringent Measures and Enhanced Safety
Strengthening Fast-Track Courts: Fast-track courts should be empowered and adequately staffed to ensure speedy trials and timely justice. Cases of sexual violence should be prioritized to deliver swift justice. Measures should be taken to improve the quality of investigation and evidence collection. Police training programs should emphasize forensic evidence collection, victim support, and sensitivity. Regular audits of police stations and judicial processes should be conducted to ensure compliance with laws. Non-compliance should result in stringent penalties for the responsible authorities. Establishing accountability mechanisms for law enforcement agencies to ensure they are fulfilling their duties in investigating and prosecuting sexual violence cases. The Government and Civic Society should establish a robust support system, including free legal aid, medical care, and psychological counselling for victims of sexual violence. The Government should create a Witness Protection Programs, where in strengthening witness protection programs will ensure the safety and security of victims and witnesses during the trial process. The Civic Society including the NGOs should create a nationwide education and awareness campaigns to change societal attitudes towards sexual violence and promote gender equality and encourage community involvement in supporting victims and creating safe environments for women through local initiatives and watchdog committees. The use of safety apps and 24/7 helplines for women in distress would help. These technologies should be integrated with law enforcement agencies for prompt response. Installing surveillance cameras in high-risk areas and ensuring adequate street lighting to deter potential offenders.

The incident, reportedly occurring in Lalji Pada, Kandivali, has been widely shared on social media, where it has garnered a mix of praise and controversy.

Viral Video Captures Confrontation

Women might experience a sense of isolation, as infertility can sometimes be a stigmatized or poorly understood topic. This can be exacerbated by societal pressures or expectations surrounding motherhood and family life. As a result, it’s common to feel a mix of sadness, anger, guilt, or frustration.

Addressing these emotions is crucial for emotional health and overall well-being. Ignoring or suppressing feelings can lead to additional stress and may negatively impact the fertility treatment process. Accepting these emotions rather than trying to “fix” them allows for a healthier emotional response. “It’s important to understand that these feelings are valid and part of the process of coming to terms with infertility. By acknowledging and embracing these emotions, women can begin to process their experiences more effectively and find constructive ways to cope” said Dr. Shobha Gupta

Here are few tips for on how women can approach these emotions constructively:

Acknowledge and accept emotions: It’s essential to recognize and validate your feelings. Infertility can bring up a range of emotions, including sadness, anger, grief, and anxiety. Accepting these feelings as a normal part of the process rather than suppressing them is the first step toward managing them effectively.

Seek support: Building a support network can make a significant difference. Connect with others who have faced similar experiences through support groups or online forums. Talking to a therapist who specializes in infertility can also provide valuable coping strategies and emotional support.

Communicate openly: Sharing your feelings with your partner is crucial. Infertility can strain relationships, but open and honest communication can help both partners understand each other’s emotional needs and maintain a supportive environment.

Educate yourself: Understanding your diagnosis and the IVF process can reduce uncertainty and empower you. Knowledge about your treatment options, potential outcomes, and the steps involved can help manage anxiety and set realistic expectations.

Focus on self-care: Prioritize activities that promote physical and mental well-being. This includes maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, practicing mindfulness or meditation, and ensuring adequate rest. Self-care can enhance resilience and overall emotional health.

Stay flexible: Be prepared for the possibility that things may not go as planned. Flexibility in adjusting expectations and being open to alternative paths, such as different treatment options or adoption, can be crucial in managing emotional stress.

Create a healthy routine: Establishing a routine that includes relaxation and enjoyable activities can provide a sense of normalcy and balance amidst the uncertainty of infertility treatment.

Focus on the present: Try to stay grounded in the present moment rather than worrying about future outcomes. Techniques such as mindfulness can help manage stress and prevent you from becoming overwhelmed by what-ifs.

Navigating the emotional impact of infertility requires acceptance, support, and self-care. “By acknowledging feelings, seeking professional help, and staying informed, women can manage the emotional challenges effectively. Embracing these strategies fosters resilience, making the IVF journey more manageable and supportive for overall well-being” concluded Dr. Shobha Gupta.

</excerpt>

Today the strides made by women in India’s IT sector are nothing short of awe-inspiring. Their ability to innovate, lead, and drive growth in this dynamic industry is truly remarkable.

Despite the challenges of juggling multiple roles and domestic pressures, these trailblazing women have risen to the top, shattering glass ceilings and redefining the landscape of technology in India. Their unwavering dedication, sharp intellect, and innovative spirit have propelled the IT sector to new heights, inspiring the next generation of leaders.

As we witness the transformative impact of women in the IT sector, there is still a long way to go. According to a study conducted by the CFA Institute, the IT sector has the representation of women in the workforce, with 30% female participation. The under-representation of women in the workforce has been and continues to be a major cause of concern always. The tech industry must take decisive steps to bridge this gender disparity. The solution lies in creating an inclusive and supportive workplace culture.

We can’t deny that innovation is the cornerstone of any industry and the propeller of economic growth. This involves addressing unconscious biases, fostering mentorship programs, and encouraging women to take more risks. Educational institutions are progressively assuming a pivotal role in shaping the future tech workforce. There is a growing emphasis on encouraging girls to embark on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, actively debunking gender preconceptions, and ensuring equal opportunities for all genders.

Promoting inclusivity in organizations requires transparent hiring practices based on merit and skills. This approach emphasizes a commitment to fair evaluation and selection, ensuring that individuals are assessed based on their qualifications, experience, and capabilities rather than extraneous factors. By prioritizing meritocracy, organizations not only enhance the quality of their workforce but also contribute to a culture that values diversity and equal opportunities.

Government policies and industry collaborations can further amplify these efforts. Advocating for policies that promote gender equality in the workplace and encouraging partnerships between government bodies, educational institutions, and private enterprises can create a more holistic approach to addressing the gender gap in tech.

The imperative for diversity in the tech industry is not just a moral stance; it is a strategic necessity. Recognizing and embracing the unique perspectives that women bring to the field is essential for fostering innovation, driving business success, and ensuring that technology benefits everyone. As we continue to navigate the challenges of gender diversity in tech, it is crucial for companies, educational institutions, and individuals to play an active role in promoting inclusivity. By dismantling barriers, challenging stereotypes, and fostering a culture of equality, we can pave the way for a future where the tech industry reflects the diversity of the world it seeks to innovate.
