Riteish Deshmukh On OTT Platforms: ‘They’ve Become Very Choosy’

Actor Riteish Deshmukh has shared his thoughts on the evolving landscape of OTT platforms, highlighting both opportunities and challenges for actors. Deshmukh, known for his roles in OTT films such as Kakuda (2024), Pill (2024), and Plan A Plan B (2022), notes that while digital platforms offer a wider range of roles, they have become increasingly selective.

Riteish Deshmukh emphasizes that OTT platforms allow actors to explore diverse roles and showcase their versatility. However, he points out that opportunities are limited by the platforms’ stringent selection criteria. “The digital space offers more variety, but we are only as good as the opportunities we receive,” he explains. He adds that platforms have become very discerning, seeking films that promise to attract viewers. “It’s not easy for films to be accepted now. Platforms need films that will perform well,” he says.

Deshmukh further elaborates on the financial dynamics of film production. “There are no free lunches in life,” he states. “Every film, whether for OTT or theaters, involves economics. Platforms need to see a return on their investment. If a film doesn’t perform, they will use that data to make future decisions,” he adds. This financial reality means that actors can face tough decisions if their films fail to attract an audience.

Discussing the role of filmmakers, Deshmukh identifies two types: those who cast actors based on the script and those who tailor scripts to fit specific actors. He praises the latter approach, noting that films crafted with a specific cast in mind are more likely to endure. “The films that stand the test of time are those where effort has been put into aligning the script with the right cast,” he says.

Deshmukh also reflects on the impact of the pandemic on film preferences. He mentions that while there was initial uncertainty about what types of films would succeed, content-driven films like Munjya have defied expectations and performed well despite minimal promotion.

On a personal note, Riteish Deshmukh discusses his own approach to choosing projects, emphasizing the importance of taking a leap of faith. “Whether for OTT or theatrical releases, sometimes you have to trust the director and script, even if it feels like a risk,” he says. In an Instagram video, Minkoff announced, “I just wanted to share the news that I will not be coming back to film Season 14 of ‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.'”

She expressed mixed emotions, stating, “It’s very bittersweet. Never did I think I would’ve been asked to do this show in a million years, let alone film it for three seasons. Every single year I was asked back, it was a blessing. It was an honour.”

Prakash Raj has made no secret of his political opinions. The actor has been a vocal opponent of the current central government and even ran for election from Bengaluru in 2019. He regularly tweets about social and political issues and that all comes at a cost, he admits. His relationships and employment in the film industry throughout the years have now started to be impacted by his politics.

Prakash says, “It is getting affected. Now, some people don’t work with me not because they have been told not to. But because they are worried ‘they’ may not approve. I am strong and rich enough to lose all that. I always feel my fear will be somebody’s power.”

But the actor says he does not regret it a bit as he wants his legacy to be more than just his on screen work. “Now, I know who is who. I feel more liberated because if I had not raised my voice, I would have died being known just as a good actor because of my roles. But not because of who I am. But doing so comes with a cost. I can afford it,” he says.

The seasoned actor is aware that some celebrities choose to remain silent, but he does not hold this against them. Many other actors are mute, and I don’t blame them because they can’t afford it, the actor claims. There is no point in their tolerating that because they will be pushed. They won’t make it. It’s not like they are in mistake.

Mukhbir, the newest online series by Prakash Raj, debuted on Zee5 last Friday. Adil Hussain and Zain Khan Durrani are also featured in the show. Prior to this, Mani Ratnam’s Tamil epic Poinniyin Selvan: I, one of the highest-grossing Indian movies of the year, featured the actor in a supporting part.

Applause Entertainment is set to come up with web series ‘Trail of an Assassin’ on Rajiv Gandhi

A web series based on the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is going to come and Applause Entertainment is going to bring.

Meanwhile, using inputs from Anirudhya Mitra’s book ‘Ninety Days: The True Story of the Hunt for Rajiv Gandhi’s Assassin’ the series ‘Trail of an Assassin’ will be made.

Moreover, the web series will be directed by Nagesh Kukunoor.

Notably, on 21 May 1991, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by an LTTE suicide bomber in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Along with Gandhi, 16 others died in the bomb blast.

Sony LIV promulgates a new Web series based on a journalist’s 1940s murder

The OTT platform Sony LIV announced its upcoming web series titled “The Madras Murder” on Monday. The series is set against the backdrop of the murder of a journalist in the 1940s of the British reign in India.

Reportedly, the show will revolve around the conspiracies and uncanny murder of a disreputable yellow journalist who was known for penning scandalous pieces about movie stars, as well as the murder’s connection to Tamil cinema’s first celebrity.

Sooriyaprathap S. will be writing and helming the series. The film’s showrunner will be director AL Vijay. IB Karthikeyan will produce this programme under the Big Print Pictures label.

Al Vijay expressed his views and said, “It feels great to be associated with the most challenging and prestigious project, “The Madras Murder” based on a real incident that happened in the Madras Presidency. To present a tremendous and magnificent experience for the viewers, our entire team will put up the optimum effort in recreating the pre-Independence era on the digital screen.”
