Officials Unveils Possible Causes

<excerpt>A helicopter carrying seven people crashed near Gaurikund while flying from Kedarnath to Guptkashi. Officials suspect poor visibility and bad weather caused the tragedy. Rescue teams responded quickly, and Uttarakhand CM expressed grief, assuring ongoing relief efforts.
</excerpt>

A dangerous helicopter crash near Kedarnath killed all seven individuals on board, including the pilot. The helicopter was being flown by Aryan Aviation Pvt Ltd when it crashed early Sunday morning. It was traveling from Shri Kedarnath Dham to Guptkashi, as stated by the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA).

The accident happened around 5:20 AM in the Gaurikund area, as verified by Rudraprayag District Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar. He explained that the accident happened in the forest trail above Gaurikund and emphasized the poor weather conditions, saying it occurred ‘under poor visibility due to bad weather’.

Soon after the crash, police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were sent to the site of the crash. Inspector General of Garhwal Range, Rajiv Swaroop, described the helicopter crashing in a ‘very remote area’, which made rescue operations difficult.

Although the cause of the crash has not been officially declared, sources indicate that adverse weather conditions most likely played a major role. The helicopter supposedly crashed somewhere between Trijuginarayan and Gaurikund in the Kedarghati region and subsequently burst into flames.

In reaction to the tragic news, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami decried the tragedy and assured individuals of ongoing relief work. Posting on social media site X, he said, “Extremely sad news about a helicopter crash in Rudraprayag district has been received. SDRF, local administration, and other rescue teams are currently involved in relief and rescue operations.” The Chief Minister also wished prayers for the people on board, saying, “My prayers are for the safety of all travellers.”

The accident has led to worries about air operations within the region, especially under adverse weather conditions. The authorities remain on the case while rescue and recovery operations continue.

</excerpt>

Hurricanes, also known as typhoons or cyclones, are massive storms that gain energy from warm, moist air over tropical seas. They are responsible for widespread destruction in many parts of the world. However, one intriguing fact remains—hurricanes never cross the equator.

The Role of the Coriolis Effect

The main reason hurricanes cannot cross the equator is the Coriolis effect—a force caused by Earth’s rotation. This effect determines the direction in which hurricanes spin:

In the Northern Hemisphere, storms rotate counterclockwise.

In the Southern Hemisphere, storms rotate clockwise.

At the equator, the Coriolis force is nearly zero, meaning hurricanes lose the ability to maintain their spinning motion. Without this force, a storm system cannot sustain the rotation needed to develop into a hurricane.

Can Hurricanes Ever Cross the Equator?

Theoretically, a very strong hurricane might push through the weak Coriolis effect near the equator and continue its path. However, no such case has ever been recorded. A hurricane would need to stop its rotation, reverse direction, and spin the opposite way to continue—which is practically impossible under natural conditions.

Why Hurricanes Form Away from the Equator

Hurricanes typically form at least 400 kilometers away from the equator because:

Warm ocean waters (above 26°C) provide the necessary fuel.

The Coriolis effect helps organize the storm into a spinning system.

Wind patterns usually steer hurricanes away from the equator, preventing any chance of crossing it.

Conclusion

While hurricanes are among the most powerful forces of nature, they have a clear geographical boundary. Due to the absence of the Coriolis effect, no hurricane has ever crossed the equator, making this one of nature’s fascinating weather patterns.

A devastating multi-vehicle collision recently took place on a bridge in Zhengzhou, China, involving over 100 cars. The accident was triggered by heavy fog that drastically reduced visibility, making it difficult for drivers to react in time.

Shocking Footage Reveals Chaos on the Bridge

Videos circulating online capture the shocking scene, showing vehicles speeding despite the dense fog. Some bystanders can be seen waving and shouting to warn approaching cars, but many drivers struggled to slow down on what was reportedly a slippery road. As a result, multiple vehicles collided in a chain reaction, causing severe damage.

Injuries and Emergency Response

Several people sustained injuries in the crash and were immediately taken to hospitals for treatment. Authorities confirmed that the accident occurred when a sudden drop in visibility caught drivers off guard, leading to one of the worst pileups in the region.

Public Reaction and Calls for Stricter Safety Measures

The video of the accident quickly went viral on social media, garnering millions of views. Many users criticized reckless driving in hazardous conditions, questioning why vehicles were moving at high speeds despite the fog. Others speculated that icy roads contributed to the severity of the crash.

One user commented, “If visibility is that low, why drive so fast? I would slow down to 20 mph until it clears up.” Another raised concerns about bystander safety, saying, “Standing near a crash site is dangerous. Staying inside your vehicle offers better protection.”

The incident has reignited discussions on road safety, with many calling for stricter traffic regulations and increased awareness about driving in foggy conditions. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution and adapt their speed according to weather conditions to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

</excerpt>

Delhi was enveloped in dense fog on Saturday morning as a cold wave tightened its grip on the city. Amid the harsh winter, many homeless individuals sought refuge in night shelters. According to the India Meteorological Department, Delhi recorded 10.2 degrees Celsius at 5.30 am on Saturday. At this time yesterday, the city’s temperature was 9.6 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the air quality in the national capital continued in the ‘very poor’ category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the AQI was recorded at 385 in Delhi today at 6 am. Yesterday at the same time it was 348.
An AQI between zero and 50 is considered ‘good,’ 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory,’ 101 and 200 ‘moderate,’ 201 and 300 ‘poor,’ 301 and 400 ‘very poor,’ and 401 and 500 ‘severe.’ As the temperature dipped, a night shelter on Lodhi Road was seen with all its beds occupied. The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has also set up 235 pagoda tents to provide shelter to homeless people. Night shelters have been set up in several areas of the national capital, including AIIMS, Lodhi Road, and Nizamuddin flyover.
In response to the chilly weather, residents of the capital were seen gathering around bonfires, while others took shelter in night homes as temperatures continued to drop. Many North Indian states also experienced similar weather on Saturday morning with dense layers of fog and cold waves.
In Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow, the temperature was recorded at 11.4 degrees Celsius at 5.30 am Saturday. Mainpuri city in the state was seen being blanketed with a dense layer of fog.
Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla experienced an unusual weather phenomenon on Thursday as the city recorded its highest-ever daytime temperature for January at 21.6°C. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this surpassed the previous record of 21.4°C, noted on January 30, 2006, making it the second-highest January temperature in the region’s history.
Dr. Kuldeep Srivastava, Head of IMD Himachal Pradesh, remarked, “If we look at the past few days, Shimla has seen clear skies, leading to a significant rise in both minimum and maximum temperatures. However, a fresh Western Disturbance is set to approach the region on the night of January 4, bringing heavy snowfall and rainfall across the state from January 5 to January 7.” He said.
According to the IMD, light to moderate rain and snowfall are expected in Lahaul and Spiti, Kinnaur. Rain and snowfall are expected in the central Himalayan region on January 6. There is a possibility of rain and thundershowers in the plains adjoining Punjab and Haryana on January 6.
Jammu and Kashmir’s capital recorded -0.6 degrees Celsius at 5.30 am on Saturday.

There is a possibility of light rain today and tomorrow, with rain likely ending the day after tomorrow. Light showers may resume after that,” IMD scientist Soma Sen informed on Saturday.

According to the IMD, Delhi has experienced daily rainfall from August 1 until Thursday. On Friday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 35.2 degrees Celsius, 1.4 degrees above normal, while humidity levels remained at 70%.

Last week’s heavy rains led to tragic incidents in the capital. A seven-year-old boy drowned in a pond formed by accumulated rainwater in a DDA park in Rohini. A preliminary police investigation confirmed the drowning, and the body was sent for post-mortem.

Earlier, on July 27, three UPSC aspirants lost their lives when a basement library in Old Rajinder Nagar’s Rau’s IAS Circle was flooded during a heavy downpour.

</excerpt>

Delhi Education Minister Atishi has announced that all schools in the capital will be closed on Thursday due to the severe rain and resulting waterlogging. The decision follows a heavy downpour on Wednesday evening that caused significant water accumulation and traffic disruptions throughout the city.

The relentless rain has led to widespread flooding and significant traffic jams, severely impacting the city’s infrastructure. Vehicles have been stranded on submerged roads, and many key routes are blocked, creating widespread chaos. Weather forecasts indicate that moderate rainfall will continue on Thursday, exacerbating the existing conditions.

The torrential rain has led to the issuance of the highest ‘red’ warning by the weather office, which has also flagged Delhi as an area of concern in its National Flash Flood Guidance Bulletin. Residents are advised to stay indoors, secure their homes, and avoid unnecessary travel.

Additionally, at least 10 flights arriving at Delhi Airport were diverted due to the adverse weather, with eight rerouted to Jaipur and two to Lucknow. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported substantial rainfall across various city locations: Safdarjung recorded 79.2 mm, Mayur Vihar 119 mm, Delhi University 77.5 mm, Pusa 66.5 mm, and Palam 43.7 mm between 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm.

The Bengaluru-Mangaluru highway has faced multiple landslips in recent weeks, causing significant chaos and disrupting the flow of vehicles and goods in the region. A major landslide at Shiradi Ghat near Doddathople in Sakleshpur has caused severe disruptions on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway.

In this recent incident, a landslide occurred on the Shiradi Ghat section of National Highway 75, involving a car, lorry, and gas tanker. The collapse resulted in a complete halt of vehicle movement and extensive roadblocks. While no fatalities have been reported, minor injuries are suspected.

The landslide is also expected to delay train services between Bengaluru and Mangaluru by up to 15 days. The railway tracks between Edakumeri and Kadagaralli along the Shiradi Ghat have been severely damaged, leading to train cancellations and reroutes. Repair work is underway, but officials estimate it will take about 15 days to fully restore the tracks. The road obstruction necessitates the use of train wagons to transport repair equipment, with two engines hauling wagons filled with rocks and materials. Over 750 workers are manually moving supplies to the damaged area.

Emergency officials are on-site, working to clear the debris. However, traffic disruptions are anticipated to last for approximately six hours.

</excerpt>

The disaster management authorities of Tripura have released a public advisory to address the challenges posed by the ongoing hot and humid weather, expected to persist for the coming days.

The general public has been advised to refrain from prolonged exposure to the intense sunlight, adjust their diet accordingly, and steer clear of alcoholic and carbonated drinks high in caffeine, which can lead to dehydration. Instead, it is suggested to consume homemade beverages like lassi, lemon water, and hydrating fruits during this period.

According to officials in the revenue department, the advisory is effective for the next seven days. If the situation persists beyond this period, a revised advisory will be issued accordingly.

“The state has been reeling from hot and humid weather conditions since last week. As per the IMD report, similar conditions may continue for more days. There are cautions from the medical fraternity asking people to avoid exposure to blazing sun and heat, which might even, in the worst case, result in sun strokes. Similarly, IMD is updating the weather reports and issuing daily bulletins with advisories for key stakeholders and the general public for handling hot and humid weather,” a press statement issued by the revenue department of Tripura stated.

As per a press statement, the Tripura government has officially categorized heat waves, sun strokes, and sunburns as state-specific disasters in Tripura. The statement also outlined a set of guidelines to be followed. It mentioned that for managing the upcoming hot and humid weather conditions, all district disaster management authorities have been instructed to conduct extensive awareness campaigns through various media platforms, keep the public updated on weather conditions, ensure access to safe drinking water and shaded areas at public and strategic locations, provide medical assistance, and make other essential arrangements for vulnerable communities within their districts.

District administrations have additionally been instructed to activate emergency operation centers, maintain alertness among quick response teams and resources, ensure uninterrupted power supply to all areas, and seek assistance from other key agencies as needed to safeguard the state’s citizens. Key recommendations for the general public include refraining from outdoor activities during peak sun hours, particularly between 1000 and 1500 IST, increasing water intake, and wearing lightweight, light-colored, breathable cotton clothing.

Additional recommendations include wearing protective goggles and using an umbrella or hat when outdoors in the sun, as well as abstaining from consuming alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated soft drinks, which can contribute to dehydration. “Avoid taking high-protein foods, and do not eat stale food. Use homemade drinks like lassi, lemon water, buttermilk, ORS, etc. which help rehydrate the body. Keep animals in shade and give them plenty of water to drink,” the advisory added.

Farmers are encouraged to maintain irrigation activities for summer maize, pulses, and other crops and vegetables. Additionally, they are advised to ensure proper shelter and ventilation for animals, particularly during the afternoon hours.

</excerpt>

In order to assess the situation in the state following the landfall of Cyclone Biparjoy, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel convened a meeting at the State Emergency Operations Centre in Gandhinagar on Friday.The district collectors of the impacted areas were given surveys to conduct by the Gujarat chief minister to determine the extent of the damage. IMD officials claim that the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) made landfall on the Kutch coast on Thursday night between 10:30 and 11:30 pm, around 10 kilometres north of Jakhau Port. Since then, it has diminished into a Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS), and during the next few hours, it is expected to decrease even further.

The morning after the landfall continued to show high-speed winds, heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions in various districts of Gujarat. Due to strong winds, the districts experienced damage in terms of infrastructure and the falling of electric poles and trees.
Visuals of heavy rains, high tide, waterlogging, and overflowing were seen at Gomti Ghat (Dwarka), Mandvi (Kutch), and Bhuj. Even other parts of the west coast, including Mumbai, experienced rough sea conditions – where tides as high as 4.27 m have been predicted by the state meteorological department.High-speed winds uprooted trees and caused road blockages and property damage in areas like Bhuj, Mandvi, Dwarka, Jamnagar, Lakhpat, Kutch district, and Naliya.

NDRF reports showed that atleast 23 people had been injured and 24 animal lives were lost as an impact of the landfall. Two people were killed before the landfall, and no human deaths have been reported thereafter. Meanwhile, around 108208 people were evacuated safely from affected districts by the district authority, NDRF, SDRF, Indian Armed Force and other official teams.The Gujarat Health Minister, Rushikesh Patel, said, “There is no report of loss of human lives in the Kachchh district, till now. Over 594 trees and electric poles fell due to the impacts of the storm according to officials. The fallen poles caused power outages in over 940 villages in Gujarat. District officials and PGVCL (Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited) teams were seen working to restore the power.

</excerpt>

Nearly 12,000 extreme weather, climate and water-related events over much of the past half-century around the globe have killed more than 2 million people and caused economic damage of $4.3 trillion, the U.N. weather agency said Monday.The stark recap from the World Meteorological Organization came as it opened its four-yearly congress among member countries, pressing the message that more needs to be done to improve alert systems for extreme weather events by a target date of 2027.
The Geneva-based agency has repeatedly warned about the impact of man-made climate change, saying rising temperatures have increased the frequency and intensity of extreme weather — including floods, hurricanes, cyclones and drought.
WMO says early warning systems have helped reduce deaths linked to climate and other weather-related catastrophes.
Most of the economic damage between 1970 and 2021 came in the United States — totaling $1.7 trillion — while nine in 10 deaths worldwide took place in developing countries.
WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said the cyclonic storm Mocha that swept across Myanmar and Bangladesh this month exemplified how the “most vulnerable communities unfortunately bear the brunt of weather, climate and water-related hazards.”
“In the past, both Myanmar and Bangladesh suffered death tolls of tens and even hundreds of thousands of people,” he said, alluding to previous catastrophes. “Thanks to early warnings and disaster management these catastrophic mortality rates are now thankfully history.”
The findings were a part of an update to WMO’s Atlas of Mortality and Economic Losses from Weather, Climate and Water Extremes, which previously had covered a nearly 50-year period through 2019.Extreme temperatures were the top cause of reported deaths; floods were the main cause of economic losses. WMO forecasts a 66% chance of Earth reaching 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer than the mid-19th century within the next five years, a key threshold of the Paris climate accord.

</excerpt>

As Cyclone Mocha intensifies and winds are getting stronger, Saint Martin’s, the one and only coral island of Bangladesh, may go temporarily underwater, according to the head of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), reported Dhaka Tribune.

“Since there is no major infrastructure on the island, the storm will not get obstructed anywhere and hit the island directly. As the centre of the storm passes over St Martin’s, water will move from one side of the island to the other, and due to the intensity of the storm, the island may be underwater for some time,” BMD Director Md Azizur Rahman said on Sunday. He added, “But the water will not stay still; it may also move away. The situation depends entirely on the speed of the storm.”

Meteorologist Shahinul Islam stated the bulk and centre of the storm would pass over Myanmar and the rest would lash Cox’s Bazar coast, as per Dhaka Tribune.
In its morning bulletin, the BMS said that very severe cyclonic storm Mocha over east-central Bay and adjoining areas had moved north-northeastwards, intensified over northeast Bay and adjoining areas and was centred at 6 am about 385 km south-southwest of Chittagong port, 305 km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 450km south of Mongla port and 370km south of Payra port.The peripheral effect of Cyclone Mocha began on Sunday morning over the coastal areas of Chattorgram and Barishal divisions, according to the latest bulletin of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

Western Australia has been hit by the worst floods in a century leaving many communities isolated. Australia’s weather forecaster on Sunday told severe weather system Ellie has created an emergency situation in Kimberly, in the state of western Australia which is equivalent to the size of California.

Even as the ex-cyclone moved eastward into the Northern Territory on Sunday, the Bureau of Meteorology cautioned that “record breaking heavy flooding” was still occurring in the Kimberley. “Many roads are impassable and many communities are now isolated,” the forecaster said on its website.

Residents of several tiny villages, including the tourist town of Broome, located some 1,240 miles (2,000 km) north of the state capital, Perth, have been cautioned by state emergency officials about increasing water in the area. According to officials, the flooding is the worst the state has ever experienced, and on Saturday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it “devastating” and promised help from the federal government.

Ahead of the third ODI between India and New Zealand Indian bowler Arshdeep Singh has said that no one can control the weather.

Earlier second ODI between India and New Zealand was called off due to rain and the third match of the three-game ODI series will take place in New Zealand’s Christchurch.

Meanwhile, to save the series India will try to win the final ODI match. India is down 1-0. The second ODI match was called off after playing 12.5 overs due to rain. It is expected that the third and final match of the series will also be canceled as on 30 November heavy rain is expected.

“The weather is not in our hands, Weather is something we cannot control. So it is important that we give our best whenever we get a chance. If there is a break in the game due to rain, we have to always be mentally and physically prepared for the match to start anytime. It is our endeavor that the process is followed properly and there is no shortage of preparation. And the plans that are made should be executed in the match,” Arshdeep Singh said.

During a pre-match press conference Arshdeep said, “As a bowler, I have not thought much that there is a lot of difference between these two formats. Just like now I am doing attacking bowling in the starting and defending in the last…. my aim is to take wickets for the team. So I have not yet thought that there will be some difference between these two formats. Wherever I get a chance to perform, I will deliver my best.”

Moreover, against New Zealand at Auckland Arshdeep and Umran Malik made their ODI debuts in the first ODI against New Zealand.

“Personally, I am feeling very good that I have made my debut in Sony Day too. Every player has the same aim that he has to represent India. It is my endeavor that whenever I get a chance in the future, I should perform well for the team,” the bowler said.

Talking about his performance Arshdeep said, “Yes it is difficult but the player does not think so. We try to enjoy our time. And then you go on playing well for your team and don’t think that it is difficult. I never thought that I want to become the bowler of the team or want to see myself here after a year. Try to stay in the rhythm: it benefits the better player and the team as well.”

However, in the first match, New Zealand chased down the target of 306 set by India.
