In a video shared by the Congress on X, Rahul can be heard saying, “Let me also click one,” prompting laughter from those around. Another clip shows Rahul asking Priyanka to step back for the perfect shot while others made way. Like a doting brother, he even showed her the clicked photos, capturing a joyful moment between the siblings.

The Kasavu saree, widely considered the cultural attire of Kerala, represents the strength and grace of Malayali women. It is central to important celebrations like Onam and other festive occasions. With its distinctive combination of white and gold, the saree is also associated with Kerala’s classical dance form, Mohiniyattam, further deepening its place in the state’s vibrant cultural fabric.

White and Gold Kasavu Sarees Symbolize…

The white and gold Kasavu saree holds profound significance in Kerala’s culture, particularly during the festival of Onam. The white color symbolizes purity, peace, and unity, reflecting the state’s diverse traditions. The understated elegance of the white saree mirrors Kerala’s natural beauty, representing the calm and harmonious spirit of its people. The golden borders add a sense of richness, signifying prosperity and celebration, making the Kasavu saree not just an outfit but a timeless expression of cultural pride.

The tradition of wearing white and gold is not exclusive to women in Kerala but extends to men as well. Men often wear mundus or dhotis, also edged with golden borders, showing respect for Kerala’s long-standing traditions and craftsmanship. These garments, typically worn during festivals like Onam, highlight the simplicity and grandeur of Kerala’s cultural legacy.

Kasavu Sarees: A Testament to Heritage

Kasavu sarees are an integral part of Kerala’s cultural identity, having evolved over centuries while retaining their traditional charm. Historically, these sarees were woven with pure gold threads, though modern versions now incorporate a blend of gold and copper-coated silver threads to make them more affordable.

The process of creating a Kasavu saree is labor-intensive and requires remarkable skill. Simple patterns can take three to five days to weave, while more intricate designs—often made for weddings—can take up to a month. The saree’s white base is said to symbolize Kerala’s untouched natural beauty, while the gold borders evoke the brilliant hues of the state’s golden sunsets. Depending on the complexity of the design and materials used, the price of a Kasavu saree can vary, making it not only a cultural treasure but also an artistic one.

Priyanka is the party’s candidate for the Wayanad constituency, and she will officially submit her nomination papers on Wednesday, accompanied by key party figures including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and their mother, Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

Confidence in Priyanka’s Candidature

Expressing confidence in Priyanka’s ability to represent Wayanad effectively, Rahul Gandhi stated on X, “The people of Wayanad hold a special place in my heart, and I can’t imagine a better representative for them than my sister, Priyanka Gandhi. I’m confident she will be a passionate champion of Wayanad’s needs and a powerful voice in Parliament.” He also emphasized the importance of the collective efforts of the Congress and its allies in protecting the Constitution and democracy.

On Monday, Priyanka Gandhi met with Kharge in Delhi to strategize for the campaign leading up to the by-elections, which are scheduled for November 13. She will lead a roadshow from Kalpetta New Bus Stand on Wednesday morning before filing her nomination later in the day.

This by-election marks Priyanka Gandhi’s electoral debut after five years of active political involvement. If she secures victory, she will become the third member of the Gandhi family to serve in Parliament, following in the footsteps of her brother Rahul Gandhi and their mother Sonia Gandhi. She faces competition from Navya Haridas of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Sathyan Mokeri from the Left Democratic Front (LDF), with Haridas being a two-time Kozhikode Corporation councillor.

As part of her campaign efforts, Congress has appointed Saral Patel as the media coordinator for Wayanad in preparation for the by-election.

</excerpt>

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is set to make her electoral debut, will visit Kerala’s Wayanad on October 23 to file her nomination papers, sources said on Saturday.

According to top Congress sources, Priyanka Gandhi will be accompanied by her brother, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. The source added that before filing her nomination, Priyanka Gandhi will hold a mega roadshow in Wayanad.

In addition to the Gandhi siblings, several top Congress leaders will be present in Wayanad for the event.

Rahul Gandhi had previously won from both Wayanad and Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. However, he chose to represent Rae Bareli, as his mother and Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, had vacated the seat after she moved to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan earlier this year.

Sonia Gandhi wrote an emotional letter to the people of Rae Bareli, expressing her gratitude for their support to the Gandhi family during difficult times.

During the Lok Sabha election campaign, Sonia Gandhi appealed to the people of Rae Bareli, stating that she was entrusting her son to them and asking them to take care of him. Both Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi stood by her side on stage as she made the emotional appeal.

In the previous elections, Rahul Gandhi had defeated CPI’s Annie Raja by a margin of 3.6 lakh votes. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he had defeated CPI’s PP Suneer by a margin of 4.31 lakh votes.

This time, Priyanka Gandhi will face CPI’s Satyam Mokeri, a national council member of the party. Mokeri had contested against Congress leader MI Shanavas in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections but lost by over 20,000 votes. A former three-term MLA from Nandapuram (1987–2001), Mokeri remains a prominent figure. The BJP is yet to announce its candidate for the Wayanad bypolls.

This is not the first time a member of the Gandhi family has contested from South India. In the 1978 bypolls, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi contested from the Chikmagalur seat and won. In 1980, she contested from Medak, in the now Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh, and also won. She retained the Medak seat until her assassination in 1984, despite winning Rae Bareli.

In the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, Sonia Gandhi made her political debut, contesting from both Amethi and Bellary in Karnataka. She defeated BJP’s Sushma Swaraj in Bellary but chose to retain the family stronghold of Amethi until 2004 when she vacated the seat for her son, Rahul Gandhi, who made his political debut that year.

Rahul Gandhi won Amethi consecutively in 2004, 2009, and 2014 but lost to BJP’s Smriti Irani in 2019 by a margin of over 50,000 votes.

The bypolls in Wayanad are scheduled for November 13, with the counting of votes set for November 23.

</excerpt>

With the Election Commission (EC) announcing the bypoll for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat, the spotlight is now on Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as she prepares for her electoral debut. This will be her first attempt at entering Parliament since joining active politics five years ago.

Shortly after the bypoll was confirmed, the Congress announced Priyanka as its candidate for Wayanad, stepping into the seat vacated by her brother, Rahul Gandhi, who has chosen to retain his Rae Bareli constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

This election could mark the first time that Priyanka Gandhi enters Parliament, joining both her mother, Sonia Gandhi, and brother Rahul as sitting MPs—a historic moment for the Gandhi family.

The bypoll for Wayanad and 47 Assembly constituencies is scheduled for November 13, alongside the first phase of polling for the Jharkhand Assembly. Priyanka’s candidacy has been highly anticipated, with speculation over her political debut building since she became active in 2019. Though she was previously projected as a potential challenger to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi, the Congress opted for her to contest from Wayanad, a seat that Rahul had successfully held for two terms.

Upon her selection, Priyanka expressed her readiness, saying, “I will not let them feel his (Rahul Gandhi’s) absence… I will work hard and try my best to make everybody happy and be a good representative.”

Priyanka’s campaign will be closely watched, as she attempts to bolster Congress’s position following its recent electoral challenges.

The Pazhavangadi Ganpathi Temple and Padmanabhaswamy Temple were bustling with devotees who gathered to offer their prayers and seek blessings on this auspicious day.

Onam, celebrated in the Malayalam month of Chingam, spans ten days with Thiruvonam being the central highlight. Traditionally, this day is marked by wearing new clothes, visiting temples, and exchanging sweets and gifts among family and friends. Festive activities also include creating intricate floral carpets known as Pookkalam in front of homes, which symbolize prosperity and joy.

A Sobering Note: Wayanad Landslide

This year’s celebrations are tinged with a sense of solemnity due to the landslides that recently devastated parts of Wayanad. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan highlighted the ongoing rehabilitation efforts in his message, urging the public to keep the affected communities in their thoughts.

“This Onam comes in the wake of the devastating landslides in Mundakai and Chooralmala. We are dedicated to rebuilding homes and restoring livelihoods in these areas,” said Vijayan. He also encouraged donations to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, emphasizing the festival’s spirit of unity and compassion.

Community Efforts and Festivities

In Ernakulam, the Thrikkakara Temple hosted the Uthrada Sadya, a grand traditional feast, for around 20,000 people on September 14. This event was part of the Uthradam celebrations, held on the ninth day of Onam, showcasing the vibrant cultural heritage of the region.

Celebrating the great culture of Kerala, this festival is observed with enthusiasm by the Malayalee community across the globe,” Modi wrote.

The ten-day Onam festival, culminating with Thiruvonam on September 15, continues to be a time of joy and reflection for Kerala. This year’s celebrations, while marked by the tragedy in Wayanad, underscore a collective spirit of support and resilience among the people of Kerala.

The Congress leader shared the receipt of the donation of Rs 2.3 lakh for people of Wayanad.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Rahul Gandhi, who earlier represented Wayanad from 2019 to 2024 and said, “Our brothers and sisters in Wayanad have endured a devastating tragedy, and they need our support to recover from the unimaginable losses they have faced.”

“I have donated my entire month’s salary to aid in the relief and rehabilitation efforts for those affected. I sincerely urge all fellow Indians to contribute whatever they can—every little bit makes a difference,” he said.

He further said that Wayanad is a beautiful part of our country, and “together, we can help rebuild the lives of its people who have lost so much”.
He also shared the link of donstion and said, “You can safely contribute to the Kerala Congress fund through the Stand With Wayanad – INC app.”

Earlier Rahul Gandhi, along with his sister and party’s general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had visited Wayanad for two days on Augist 1 and 2.
The Wayanad was hit after the landslide stuck the district on July 30 night. More than 350 people had died while over more than 400 homes were completely destroyed in the massive landslide.

Congress has announced the candidature of Priyanka Gandhi from the seat after Rahul Gandhi chose to retain the Rae Bareli seat in the Lok Sabha.
Earlier Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had also urged the people of the country to donate for Wayanad.

Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Wayanad following the disaster in the southern state.

</excerpt>

The Congress party recently disclosed to the Election Commission of India (ECI) that its leader Rahul Gandhi was allocated a total of ₹1.40 crore to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from two seats. Rahul Gandhi received ₹70 lakh each for contesting from Wayanad in Kerala and Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh. Despite winning in both constituencies, he chose to retain his seat in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh. Consequently, by-elections will be held in Wayanad, with Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra standing as the party’s candidate.

Rahul Gandhi, although a key campaigner for Congress in the Lok Sabha elections, was not the highest recipient of campaign funds within the party. Vikramaditya Singh, who contested from the Mandi constituency in Himachal Pradesh, was given ₹87 lakh, the highest allocation for any Congress candidate. Despite this financial backing, Singh lost the election to Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate, actor-politician Kangana Ranaut. Other Congress leaders, including Kishori Lal Sharma, K. C. Venugopal, Manickam Tagore, Radhakrishna, and Vijay Inder Singla, each received ₹70 lakh to contest their respective seats.

The Congress party won 99 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and Rahul Gandhi was appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the lower house. Senior party leaders Anand Sharma and Digvijay Singh, who received ₹46 lakh and ₹50 lakh respectively, did not secure wins in their contests.

This comes in light of the government’s decision in January 2022, based on the Election Commission’s recommendation, to increase the election expenditure limit for candidates. The limit was raised to ₹95 lakh from ₹70 lakh for Lok Sabha elections and to ₹40 lakh from ₹28 lakh for assembly elections. For Lok Sabha polls, the revised expenditure limit now stands at ₹90 lakh for larger states and ₹75 lakh for smaller states.

The search operation, conducted by the Army, Special Operations Group, Fire and Rescue Services, Forest Department, and several volunteers, found 349 body parts identified as belonging to 248 individuals, including 121 men and 127 women. According to Revenue Minister K Rajan, 52 of these body parts require additional tests due to decomposition.

Rajan stated that blood samples from 115 individuals have been collected to date. He also mentioned that blood samples from the relatives of three residents from Bihar are now available. Additionally, for temporary resettlement, the Harrison Malayalam labor unions have been requested to submit a report on the safety and management of 53 houses that are ready for occupancy, as well as other houses that can be made available, according to the minister during a press conference.

Trade union and management representatives have been directed to carry out an inspection and submit a report detailing which workers will be included. In addition to facilitating temporary resettlement, a fully equipped settlement is planned for the local self-government areas of Meppadi, Mupainad, Vaithiri, Kalpatta, Muttil, and Ambalavyal.

On Wednesday, an investigation will be carried out for rental houses under the leadership of all parties involved. A five-member committee, including panchayat members, revenue officers, and social workers, will assess and report on the available houses within the local self-government areas, the minister added.

Meanwhile, the cabinet sub-committee reported that 1,368 certificates have been issued to disaster victims through a special campaign established at the camps.

During the press conference at the Collectorate mini conference hall, the cabinet sub-committee members K. Rajan, AK Saseendran, OR Kelu, and District Collector DR Meghasree were in attendance.

Regarding the situation in Wayanad, Kerala Forest Minister AK Saseendran stated, “Three more body parts were found from the Nilambur area. As of now, 231 bodies and around 206 body parts have been recovered. At present, there are a total of 1505 people staying in 12 camps and 415 samples were sent for DNA testing…”

The body parts brought to the hospital will undergo examination. On Tuesday, the search continued in the Nilambur-Wayanad areas, involving NDRF, Fire Force, Civil Defence, Police, Forest Department forces, and volunteers.

On Tuesday, 260 volunteers collaborated in the Mundakai-Churalmala disaster areas for a search operation. The inspection concentrated on the riverbanks below the Churalmala bridge in the forest. A thorough search also continued in Chaliyar, located in the Malappuram district.

</excerpt>

The catastrophic landslides that recently ravaged Wayanad in Kerala have brought to light the pressing necessity for a recalibrated approach to disaster risk management and environmental assessment protocols. In the aftermath of this tragic event, which resulted in the loss of more than 300 lives, left almost 300 individuals missing, and injured approximately 200, the extensive response and concerted efforts of both central and state authorities, along with national disaster response agencies, have been paramount. Yet, while the immediate relief efforts were the need of the hour, they reflect the urgent need for a more robust, scientifically driven approach to understanding and mitigating landslide risks.

The magnitude of the disaster has necessitated an intense, coordinated response from various agencies. The Indian Army, Navy, Air Force and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have played pivotal roles in the rescue operations. The Army’s medical teams have been at the forefront of providing emergency treatment to the injured, while specialised units from the Navy, Air Force and NDRF have been crucial in search and rescue operations, navigating the treacherous terrain to locate and assist those trapped. Concurrently, the Central Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sanctioned an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for the deceased’s families and ₹50,000 for the injured. Additionally, ₹145 crore has been allocated from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to the Kerala Government to facilitate ongoing relief operations. At the state level, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is managing disaster response efforts, overseeing coordination with central agencies and ensuring the provision of essential services to the affected regions.

The genesis of the Wayanad disaster was precipitated by a confluence of factors, including extreme meteorological conditions compounded by climate change. Scientists from the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) have pointed to the warming of the Arabian Sea, which has led to the formation of intense cloud systems and exceedingly heavy rainfall within brief intervals. This climatic shift, combined with the region’s fragile terrain and significant loss of forest cover, created a perfect storm for the disaster. Rain gauge data reveals that the region experienced about 1830 mm of rainfall over the preceding 30 days, with a subsequent surge of intense precipitation acting as the final trigger for the landslides.

While the immediate response has been robust, the tragedy has highlighted significant gaps in our approach to landslide risk management. In the aftermath of the disaster, there has been considerable advocacy from various quarters for the implementation of the Gadgil Committee Report, officially known as the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP), which was commissioned by the UPA government in 2010, to address environmental concerns within the Western Ghats. However, while this report offers insights into environmental conservation, it does not adequately address the specific needs of Wayanad and analogous regions. The report, which primarily focused on the Western Ghats, used satellite imagery to analyse 8×8 kilometre large grids but did not conduct comprehensive ground-level research in Kerala. Though he is an expert on Maharashtra and Goa, it is worth mentioning that Madhav Gadgil has hardly done any groundwork in Kerala. The reliance on such broad analyses is not suited to address the specific geological and hydrological conditions that contribute to landslide susceptibility in different regions.
The limitations of the Gadgil Report are evident in the context of the recent disaster. Even if the recommendations of the Gadgil Report had been implemented, they would not have necessarily prevented the disaster. The landslides occurred in a forested area, far from quarries, other activities and land use changes primarily addressed by the report. The resultant devastation has impacted the downstream inhabitants. As such, its recommendations do not directly mitigate the risks posed by factors like intense rainfall and deforestation in specific areas like Wayanad.

A more refined approach is needed for effective landslide risk management. Current methodologies often rely on generalised assumptions, such as categorising any area with a slope greater than 20 degrees as high-risk. This broad categorization fails to consider the specific conditions that influence landslide susceptibility, such as soil stability, historical landslide occurrences, and localised rainfall patterns. The Landslide Atlas, released by ISRO, highlights Kerala as highly vulnerable, with Wayanad ranked 13th among the most landslide-prone districts, and requires a more detailed understanding of its landslide risks. What Kerala needs are better and more scientific surveys for setting up any classification to gain a detailed understanding of its landslide risks.

To address these challenges, a comprehensive strategy should be developed, incorporating detailed mapping of landslide-prone areas. This mapping should take into account localised data on soil conditions, slope angles, and rainfall thresholds and should be based on detailed geological and hydrological surveys rather than broad assumptions. Establishing precise rainfall thresholds for landslide-prone areas would allow for better forecasting and preparation. Implementing mini weather monitoring stations to track real-time rainfall and soil saturation levels would provide valuable data for predicting landslide risks and issuing timely warnings to communities at risk.

The establishment of effective landslide warning systems is also essential. These systems should be capable of detecting early signs of potential landslides and alerting local populations in a timely manner. Ensuring that these warnings reach those at risk and enabling them to take necessary precautions is crucial for mitigating the impacts of future landslides.

Moreover, community engagement and preparedness play a critical role in disaster management. Rather than suggesting impractical solutions like relocating the whole high-risk population away from their homes, efforts should focus on enhancing community awareness and resilience to landslide risks. Engaging with local communities to develop and implement preparedness plans can help reduce the impact of future landslides.
Developing an approach of integrated disaster management strategy that combines early warning systems, community preparedness, and sustainable land management practices will go a long way in combating such calamities in the future. This approach should be supported by regular updates to landslide susceptibility maps and the incorporation of local knowledge and experiences rather than broad classifications.
The role of the defence forces, volunteer organisations and NDRF in Wayanad reminds us of the importance of a well-coordinated disaster response. Their prompt and efficient actions in rescuing trapped individuals, administering medical care, and conducting relief operations serve as a clarion call for sustained investment in disaster preparedness and response capabilities. The central and state governments’ response, including financial support and coordination of rescue efforts, has been crucial in addressing the immediate needs of affected communities. The lessons from Wayanad must prompt a reevaluation of current practices and the adoption of targeted, evidence-based strategies to mitigate the impacts of such disasters in the future.

The police emphasized that visiting disaster-stricken areas for sightseeing could obstruct rescue efforts and hinder relief operations. The statement on social media urged, “Please avoid visiting disaster sites; it will affect the rescue operations.”

Understanding ‘Dark Tourism’

‘Dark tourism’ involves traveling to places linked to death, tragedy, or historical suffering. The term, introduced in 1996 by J. John Lennon and Malcolm Foley from Glasgow Caledonian University, encompasses travel to sites of historical events such as natural disasters, atrocities, and significant historical tragedies. Examples of dark tourism destinations include places like Chernobyl in Ukraine, Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland, and Pompeii in Italy.

The Role and Impact

While often criticized, dark tourism can also serve as an educational tool, allowing visitors to engage with historical events and gain a deeper understanding of past tragedies. These visits can offer a more tangible connection to historical events, helping to humanize and contextualize suffering.

However, in the wake of recent events like the Wayanad landslides, which have caused significant loss and disruption, it is crucial for tourists to respect the boundaries set by authorities to facilitate effective rescue and relief efforts.

According to the Landslide Atlas of India released by ISRO in 2023, Wayanad is ranked 13th among the country’s most landslide-prone districts. Out of Kerala’s 14 districts, 10 are listed among India’s 30 most vulnerable areas for landslides.

Kerala has been facing significant property damage and casualties due to heavy rainfall and landslides every monsoon season since the major floods of August 2018. The number of landslide events has varied over the years, with 5,191 incidents in 2018, dropping to 756 in 2019, and further decreasing to nine in 2020. In 2021, there were 29 landslides, and in 2022, a year with lower-than-normal rainfall, there were fewer casualties.

The ISRO Atlas, covering landslides from 1998 to 2022, shows Kerala as the sixth most landslide-affected state in India, after Mizoram, Uttarakhand, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir. Kerala experienced 6,039 landslides during this period.

Here are the rankings of the most landslide-prone districts in Kerala:
1. Thrissur (3rd)
2. Palakkad (5th)
3. Malappuram (7th)
4. Kozhikode (10th)
5. Wayanad (13th)
6. Ernakulam (15th)
7. Idukki (18th)
8. Kottayam (24th)
9. Kannur (26th)
10. Thiruvananthapuram (28th)

Families are grappling with unimaginable loss, searching for their loved ones and trying to rebuild their lives. Survivors share their poignant stories, highlighting the resilience of those affected by this tragedy.

A Night Next to a Tusker

Sujata, an elderly woman, recounted the terrifying night she spent with her grandchild after escaping their collapsing house. Fleeing to a nearby hill on the edge of the forest, they found themselves standing next to a wild elephant.

“We barely escaped from our toppling house,” Sujata told PTI. “We ran to a nearby hill at the edge of the forest. Once we reached there, we realized that we were standing next to a tusker.”

She spoke to the elephant, pleading for safety: “Told him (the elephant) that we lost everything and asked him not to attack us. We spent the entire night next to him.”

Loss of Home and Livelihood

Sirajudeen and his family witnessed boulders and trees crushing their home and livelihood. Their autorickshaw, crucial for their daily earnings, was destroyed.

Ganesh, a security guard from Chooralmala, described the moments leading up to the landslide. “As I reached home, I saw muddy water and woke up my wife who was sleeping. I didn’t waste a single second. We left the house and went to a nearby hilltop,” he said, recalling the urgency of their escape.

Ganesh’s voice filled with grief as he recounted losing his sister, her family, and their home. “As the water rose, we ran to the hilltop. We saw my sister’s house being washed away in the first landslide. The second landslide took away my house too.”

A Father’s Desperate Search

Amid the chaos, a father searches desperately for his missing 14-year-old daughter, Anamika, who was staying at her grandmother’s house during the landslide. With tears in his eyes, he said, “My youngest daughter is missing. Unless I can identify her, I will not believe that she is gone. I will consider that she has gone to some faraway place for higher studies.”

The disaster has affected families across the region, with over 25 children among the deceased. As rescue operations continue, the death toll is expected to rise, deepening the heartache for the people of Wayanad.

</excerpt>

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed deep sorrow over the destruction caused by landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad during his visit to the area with his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Reflecting on the tragedy, Gandhi likened his emotions to those he felt when his father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, died in 1991.

“It is a terrible tragedy for Wayanad, for Kerala, and the nation. We have come here to see the situation. It is painful to see how many people have lost family members and their houses. We will try to help and make sure that the survivors get what is their due,” said Gandhi while addressing reporters. He emphasized the need for relocation and aid for the affected people and thanked the doctors, nurses, administration, and volunteers for their efforts.

The massive landslides that struck Mundakkai and Churalmala in Wayanad on July 30 caused extensive destruction, killing about 250 people and injuring over 200. Rescue teams are racing against time to trace the missing people.

During his interaction with reporters, Rahul Gandhi turned emotional, stating, “Today, I feel how I felt when my father (Rajiv Gandhi) died. Here, people have not just lost a father but an entire family. We all owe these people respect and affection.” He urged that no politics should be done and emphasized the need to prioritize aid and assistance to Wayanad. “I am not interested in politics right now. I am interested in the people of Wayanad,” he said.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra echoed her brother’s sentiments, stating that the Congress party is there to offer as much comfort and support as possible. “We have spent the entire day meeting people who have suffered. It’s an immense tragedy. We can only imagine the kind of pain the people are enduring. We are here to offer as much comfort and support as possible,” she said. Priyanka also mentioned that there has been a similar tragedy in Himachal Pradesh and that they plan to convene to outline how they can assist, especially the children who have been left alone.

The images, captured by advanced Earth observation satellites, provide a stark view of the region’s altered landscape, showcasing the aftermath of intense monsoon rains that triggered the landslides.

Visual Evidence of Destruction

The satellite images reveal large swathes of land scarred by the landslides, with entire hillsides sheared off and debris fields stretching across what were once lush, green landscapes. The visual evidence shows the sheer scale of the destruction, including collapsed structures, blocked roads, and damaged farmlands. The disruption to natural vegetation and the displacement of soil and rocks are clearly visible, illustrating the power and impact of the natural disaster.

Impact on Communities and Environment

The landslides have not only caused significant environmental damage but have also severely affected local communities. The images show areas where homes and infrastructure have been buried or swept away, highlighting the urgent humanitarian needs for those affected. The destruction of farmland and the blockage of transportation routes have further compounded the challenges faced by residents, impacting their livelihoods and access to essential services.

Role of Satellite Imaging in Disaster Response

Satellite imaging plays a crucial role in disaster response and management. These images help authorities assess the extent of the damage quickly and accurately, facilitating efficient deployment of rescue and relief operations. They also aid in identifying areas at risk of further landslides, allowing for preemptive measures to protect vulnerable populations and infrastructure.

The recovery from such extensive landslides will require coordinated efforts in terms of rebuilding infrastructure, restoring agricultural lands, and providing support to displaced families. The satellite data will continue to be invaluable in monitoring ongoing risks, planning rehabilitation projects, and guiding sustainable land management practices to prevent future disasters.

The satellite images of Wayanad landslides offer a sobering glimpse into the destructive power of natural disasters exacerbated by extreme weather events. They underscore the need for comprehensive disaster preparedness and response strategies, as well as the importance of technology in mitigating the impact of such events. As Kerala embarks on the long road to recovery, the detailed information provided by satellite imagery will be an essential tool in rebuilding and enhancing resilience against future threats.

Krishnankutty has instructed that power connections in the landslide-affected areas of Chooralmala and Mundakkai in Wayanad be restored promptly, according to a statement from the minister of electricity’s office on Tuesday.

Minister Krishnankutty has directed that power restoration efforts prioritise all areas except for seven transformers in the disaster-stricken region, which serve approximately 1,400 consumers. Power to other areas is expected to be restored by this evening. The evaluations will further be conducted in collaboration with disaster management authorities.

Krishnankutty will soon visit the affected areas to assess the restoration efforts firsthand. According to the minister’s office, approximately 3 kilometers of high-tension lines and 8 kilometers of low-tension lines in the Meppadi electrical section have been severely damaged by the landslides. Additionally, two transformers are missing, and three others are damaged. There has been significant damage to the lines in two transformer zones, leading to a complete power outage for around 350 homes, officials reported. In the early hours of Tuesday, the landslides in Meppadi, Wayanad, resulted in over 80 fatalities and about 116 injuries.

</excerpt>

One person is reported missing following a landslide that struck the Vilangad area in Kozhikode district, Kerala, on Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, the Wayanad district of the state is struggling with landslides caused by heavy rainfall.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is carrying out search and rescue operations. The landslide has destroyed the Malayangad bridge and partially damaged four houses along the riverbank, isolating 15 families. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, and residents living along the riverbanks have been relocated.

In a separate incident, a landslide on the Kaithapoyil-Anorammal-Valliyad road has covered about 80 meters of the road with debris, resulting in the evacuation of seven families from the area. Additionally, landslides in the Pashukadav region of Kuttikkad Maruthonkara village have caused significant disruption. The heavy rains have led to flooding, which has waterlogged streets and inundated houses and shops.

As water levels in the Kadantara river continue to rise, residents from the Preakkandod, Mukkam, and Peetikappara areas have been moved to temporary shelters. To manage the increasing water levels, two shutters of the Kakkayam Dam have been raised by four feet in multiple stages.

Residents living along the Kuttayyadi riverbanks have been advised to be cautious. Heavy rainfall has raised water levels in the Poonur, Mahe, Kuttayyadi, Chaliyar, and Cherupuzha rivers to critical levels, prompting warnings for vigilance in these areas. Additionally, access to tourist spots in the district has been restricted, and quarry operations have been suspended due to the intense rainfall.

At present, 854 individuals from 196 families are taking refuge in 41 relief camps across Kozhikode district, with many others seeking shelter at relatives’ homes. Residents in areas prone to landslides have been advised to relocate. In Kozhikode Taluk, 24 relief camps are accommodating 298 people. Vadakara Taluk has two camps housing 21 individuals, Koilandy Taluk has seven camps with 161 people, and Thamarassery Taluk has eight camps sheltering 374 people.

Regarding the search and rescue operations in Wayanad, S. Shankar Pandian, Deputy Commandant of the NDRF, stated “Our teams are located at various locations in Wayanad. Even in Kozhikode, a landslide was suspected, the NDRF team is deployed there. Already, three teams of NDRF are in Wayanad. We are doing our best to carry out rescue efforts. We are facing difficulty in reaching interior parts in the landslide-affected area.”

Kerala Chief Secretary V. Venu announced that more than 80 bodies have been recovered as rescue operations persist in the landslide-affected areas of Wayanad. Additionally, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in eight districts across the state.

A red alert has been issued for the districts of Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasargod. An orange alert has been sounded for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam districts.

</excerpt>

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has officially announced her entry into the electoral battleground by confirming her candidacy from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency. This decision follows her brother Rahul Gandhi’s move to vacate Wayanad in favor of their family stronghold, Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh.

The announcement ends months of speculation and media interest regarding Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s electoral ambitions, with many political analysts attributing her role in revitalizing the Congress party’s electoral fortunes. Known for her impactful campaigning style reminiscent of her grandmother Indira Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been pivotal in recent electoral successes in Uttar Pradesh and other states.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s entry into active politics in 2019 marked a strategic shift for the Congress, positioning her as a potential challenger to Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi. Despite not contesting there, her influence was widely felt across the country during the recent Lok Sabha elections, where she played a crucial role as a star campaigner.

If successful in the upcoming Wayanad bypoll, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will join her mother Sonia Gandhi, currently a Rajya Sabha member from Rajasthan, and her brother Rahul Gandhi in Parliament, marking a significant presence of the Gandhi family in Indian politics.

Her candidacy from Wayanad underscores her growing influence within the Congress party and her role as a key campaigner. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s dynamic approach and ability to connect with voters have positioned her as a talismanic figure for the Congress, particularly noted for her strategic rebuttals and mass mobilization efforts during the election campaign.

Ending the days of speculation which Parliament constituency Rahul Gandhi will retain, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday announced that he will retain the family pocket borough of Rae Bareli while his sister and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will make her poll debut from Wayanad Lok Sabha seat.

The decision was taken at a meeting at the residence of Kharge, where Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and party general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal was also present.

The meeting lasted for over one and half hours.

Addressing the media, Kharge said: “Our leader Rahul Gandhi was elected from two seats. As per the law, he has to vacate one seat, and on one seat he can continue because of the last date.”

“We have decided that Rahul Gandhi should keep the Rae Bareli seat because Rae Bareli has a very strong connection with the family. The people of Rae Bareli and for the party he should retain the Rae Bareli seat,” Kharge remarked while announcing the importance of Rae Bareli seat, from which Sonia Gandhi was elected for four consecutive terms from 2004 to 2019.

Kharge further said that Rahul Gandhi also won from Wayanad.
“The people from Wayand want him to retain the seat, however, as per law he can retain only one seat. After thinking carefully we have decided that Priyanka Gandhi should contest from there (Wayanad), and I want to thank both of them, they have agreed. I am declaring,” Kharge said.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi while commenting on the decision, said: “I have an emotional relationship with both Rae Bareli and the people of Wayand.”

Recalling his association with Wayanad as its MP, the Congress leader said, “In the last five years as the MP of Wayand has been a very enjoyable experience. The people of Wayand stood with me. The people of Wayand gave me love and affection, every single person regardless of party, they gave me energy to fight in a very difficult time. So, I will never forget that.”

Rahul Gandhi said, “I want everyone in Wayanad to know that Priyanka is going to fight the election in Wayanad. But I am going to be a frequent visitor to Wayanad. I am going to be available to the people of Wayand and the commitments that I have made, we will stand by them and try to deliver all those commitments. My doors are open for you all throughout the rest of my life.”

He also said that his sister is going to fight the election and “I am confident that she is going to win the election”.

“She (Priyanka Gandhi) will be a very good representative for the people of Wayanad,” he added

Even Priyanka Gandhi expressed her happiness and said, “I am very happy to contest from Wayanad. I won’t let them feel his absence. I will work hard and try my best to make everybody happy and to be a good representative. I am not nervous at all.”

She also said that for her the people of Rae Bareli and Wayanad are important and she along with her brother will fulfill the promises that have been made.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Rahul Gandhi won the seat of Rae Bareli by defeating BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh by a margin of 3,90,030 votes. Rahul Gandhi had contested this seat aiming to save the lone bastion of the party in the state after he lost Amethi in 2019.

The Congress leader also won the seat of Wayanad, which paved his entry to the Lok Sabha in 2019. He defeated Communist Party of India- Marxist candidate Annie Raja by a margin of 3,64,422 votes.

He shared that while he has cherished his time representing Wayanad for the past five years, leaving the constituency was a tough choice. Rahul Gandhi assured the people of Wayanad that his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who will now contest from Wayanad, will continue their commitments and that he will remain a frequent visitor.

“I have an emotional connection with both Wayanad and Rae Bareli. Being an MP from Wayanad for the last five years has been fantastic and enjoyable,” Rahul Gandhi said. “I thank the people of Wayanad for their love and support, which gave me strength during difficult times.”

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, expressing her readiness to take on the new responsibility, vowed to ensure that Wayanad continues to receive effective representation. “I am very happy to represent Wayanad, and I promise to work hard to fulfill the expectations of the people,” she affirmed. She also emphasized her ongoing commitment to Rae Bareli and Amethi.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge confirmed that Rahul Gandhi will retain his Rae Bareli seat while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will contest from Wayanad. This decision was made after extensive consultations within the party leadership, including Sonia Gandhi and other senior leaders.

While the Congress party expressed confidence in Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s electoral prospects in Wayanad, BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar criticized the move as dynastic imposition on the voters of Wayanad.

Rahul Gandhi, who won both Rae Bareli and Wayanad seats in the elections, emphasized his commitment to serve the people of both constituencies despite the logistical challenges posed by holding dual seats.

</excerpt>

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has chosen to retain the Raebareli Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, vacating his position in Wayanad, Kerala. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced that Priyanka Gandhi will make her electoral debut by contesting from the vacated Wayanad seat.

Rahul Gandhi had contested the 2024 elections from both Raebareli and Wayanad. Having to vacate one seat, he opted to keep Raebareli, a long-standing stronghold of the Gandhi family. This decision marks a significant step in reinforcing the party’s influence in Uttar Pradesh, a state crucial for the Congress’s political strategy.

Raebareli, a bastion for the Gandhis, has a storied history with the family. Sonia Gandhi, Rahul’s mother, held the Raebareli seat before moving to the Rajya Sabha. Before her, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and former PM Rajiv Gandhi, Rahul’s grandmother and father respectively, represented Raebareli and Amethi, further cementing the family’s legacy in these constituencies.

Priyanka Gandhi’s candidature from Wayanad signifies her official entry into electoral politics. This Kerala constituency became a safe seat for Rahul Gandhi in 2019 after he lost his long-held seat of Amethi to BJP’s Smriti Irani. Despite the BJP’s extensive outreach in Kerala, it remains a Congress stronghold, making Wayanad a strategic choice for Priyanka’s debut.

The decision to retain Raebareli also reflects the Congress’s efforts to revive its presence in Uttar Pradesh. In the recent elections, the Congress won six seats in UP, with ally Samajwadi Party securing 37 out of the state’s 80 seats, indicating a potential resurgence.

As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approach, these strategic decisions by the Congress are poised to shape the party’s future trajectory and strengthen its position in key regions.

</excerpt>

In a widely speculated move, Rahul Gandhi is set to relinquish his Wayanad Lok Sabha seat today in favor of the family stronghold of Raebareli, which he had also won by a significant margin, sources told NDTV. This decision paves the way for Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to contest from the Kerala constituency, a possibility that has been generating buzz in recent days.

Additionally, sources reveal that despite strong support from Congress leaders, Rahul Gandhi is unlikely to assume the role of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Taking up this position would have granted him Cabinet rank status, improved coordination with allies in the INDIA bloc, and helped the Congress present a strong front with its increased presence in the Lok Sabha.

“He has conveyed that he is not inclined to take up the post,” a source said.

The Congress will hold a meeting around 5 pm, during which the decision regarding the Wayanad constituency is likely to be made, as today is the last day to convey it to the Lok Sabha secretariat. The decision on the Leader of the Opposition may also be addressed during the meeting, but the selection of the Wayanad candidate can wait since the bypoll will be held within six months of Rahul Gandhi vacating the seat.

Gandhi enjoyed a sumptuous lunch at the popular eatery and took time to speak with the restaurant staff and take pictures with them.

“We often forget to say thank you to the people who quietly work behind the scenes. On my way to Wayanad, we stopped by to have a delicious lunch at a restaurant called White House in Thamarassery. Felt like going into their kitchen and saying thank you to the Chefs, the staff, and all those who made sure we had a sumptuous meal this afternoon. #letssaythankyou,” Gandhi shared in a post on X.

Gandhi also expressed his gratitude to the voters in Kerala who contributed to his Lok Sabha victory from Wayanad in the 2024 general elections. This marks his first visit to the state following his significant victory, where he defeated his rival, CPI candidate Annie Raja, by a margin of 3,64,422 votes. In the 2019 elections, he secured the seat with a record margin of 4.3 lakh votes.

Speaking at a public gathering in Malappuram, Gandhi, who also contested and won from the Raebareli seat in Uttar Pradesh, said, “I have a dilemma in front of me — Will I be a Member of Parliament of Wayanad or Raebareli?”

Rahul Gandhi further remarked, “For me, it’s much simpler. My God is the poor people of India. My God is the people of Wayanad. For me, it’s easy. I just talk to the people and my God tells me what to do. Back to the question of Wayanad or Rae Bareli, what I will commit to you is that both Wayanad and Rae Bareli will be happy with my decision.”

In 2019, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi won the Wayanad seat, securing his entry to the Lok Sabha by defeating Communist Party of India-Marxist candidate Annie Raja by 3,64,422 votes.

Despite securing victories in both constituencies, he now faces the decision of choosing between Uttar Pradesh and Kerala. However, Gandhi remains non-committal on making a decision, stating that it is a choice that will have to be made but refraining from indicating his preference at this time.

“I can’t stay in two seats but I haven’t decided which one I will give up,” said Rahul Gandhi

As he prepares to make a decision soon, party leaders have already urged him to keep Rae Bareli.

“We will request Rahul ji to retain Rae Bareli,” said UP Congress Committee president Ajay Rai.

Congress Legislature Party leader Aradhana Mishra ‘Mona’ said “People of both the Lok Sabha constituencies have ensured Rahul Gandhi’s election to Lok Sabha by a big margin. So, the choice of one seat will be difficult for him,”

“We want Rahul Gandhiji to retain the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat. However, if he decides to retain Wayanad, we will request the Congress high command to field a Gandhi family member. As no other leader will be acceptable here as a candidate, the choice must be Priyanka Gandhi,” said Pankaj Tiwari, The president of district Congress Committee, Rae Bareli.

CB Pandey, a former advisor to the UP governor, explained that according to the Prohibition of Simultaneous Membership Rules, a candidate elected from two Lok Sabha seats must resign from one of them within 14 days of their election.

Rahul Gandhi has won both the Wayanad and Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seats by significant margins, securing his return as an MP from Uttar Pradesh and Kerala. In Wayanad, he defeated CPI’s Annie Raja by 3,64,422 votes, while in Rae Bareli, he won over BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh by 3,89,341 votes. BJP’s K Surendran came third in Wayanad, and BSP’s Thakur Prasad Yadav in Rae Bareli.

Rahul Gandhi’s Performance At Wayanad

Since its formation after the 2008 delimitation, this constituency has remained a stronghold for the Congress party, maintaining its dominance since 2009. In the 2019 elections, Rahul Gandhi secured a commanding victory, capturing 65% of the vote share and receiving over seven lakh votes. His triumph was notable, as he defeated CPI’s PP Suneer by a substantial margin of 4.31 lakh votes.

Following his defeat in Amethi by BJP’s Smriti Irani, this constituency has become Gandhi’s primary seat. The recent electoral battle garnered considerable public attention, especially due to the participation of both the Congress and CPI, who are allies in the I.N.D.I.A alliance. Throughout the campaign, Rahul Gandhi engaged with voters through over 100 rallies and public interaction programs held across the country.

Family Legacy in Rae Bareli

Rahul Gandhi’s candidacy from Rae Bareli concludes months of suspense, stepping into the shoes of his mother, Sonia Gandhi, who held the seat until February. The constituency has been a Congress stronghold since 1952, with only three exceptions. If victorious, Rahul Gandhi will become the fourth Gandhi to represent Rae Bareli, joining the ranks of Feroze Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi’s Political Career

Rahul Gandhi entered politics in 2004 at the age of 34, representing the Amethi constituency. Despite the tragic assassinations of his grandmother Indira Gandhi and father Rajiv Gandhi, he delayed his political foray. His debut campaign emphasized unity against caste and religious divisions, winning Amethi by a substantial margin.

Elevated to Congress vice-president in 2013, Rahul Gandhi’s tenure was marked by internal controversies and external challenges. He vocally opposed certain policies of the Manmohan Singh government and faced criticism for the party’s performance in the 2014 general elections, which saw Congress reduced to 44 seats.

His Role In Congress

From 2004 to 2007, Rahul Gandhi maintained a low profile in government roles but actively campaigned for Congress. In 2007, he became the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and took charge of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) and the National Students Union of India (NSUI). Under his leadership, membership soared from 2 lakh to 25 lakh, marking a significant organizational expansion.

Focus on Farmers and Legislation

Rahul Gandhi’s advocacy for farmers began in 2008, visiting distressed families and highlighting their plights in Parliament. Despite criticism for his low parliamentary attendance, he played a crucial role in UPA’s re-election campaign in 2009, which saw Congress winning 206 seats. His focus on rural employment and interaction with the public through grassroots campaigns strengthened his political presence.

Opposition and Resurgence

Post-2014, Rahul Gandhi emerged as a staunch critic of the Modi government, rallying against policies perceived as pro-corporate. Despite setbacks in state elections, he led Congress to significant gains in the 2017 Gujarat elections. His tenure as Congress president from 2017 to 2019 saw victories in three Hindi heartland states, though the 2019 general elections resulted in another disappointing performance for Congress.

Highlights Of Rahul Gandhi From 2019 Lok Elections

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi made a strategic decision to contest from two constituencies: Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, a long-held family bastion, and Wayanad in Kerala, chosen as a safer option. The results were a mix of surprising defeats and significant victories:

Amethi: Traditionally a stronghold of the Gandhi family, Amethi had been represented by Rahul Gandhi since 2004. However, in a shocking turn of events, he lost to BJP’s Smriti Irani by a margin of over 55,000 votes. This defeat was emblematic of the shifting political dynamics and the BJP’s growing influence even in Congress strongholds.

Wayanad: Contrasting his loss in Amethi, Rahul Gandhi secured a decisive victory in Wayanad, winning by a margin of over 400,000 votes.
