</excerpt>

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Malaysia for the ASEAN Summit. This marks his first official visit to Asia since taking office in January 2025.

Washington Refocuses on the Indo-Pacific

After months of concentrating on the Russia-Ukraine war and the West Asia crisis, the US is turning its attention back to Asia.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed this shift. She said, “In his first trip to Asia as Secretary of State, Secretary Rubio is focused on reaffirming the United States’ commitment to advancing a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region.”

US Sees Strategic Value in Southeast Asia

A senior official emphasized that it is “in America’s interest” to remain committed to East and Southeast Asia. President Trump has received advice to prioritize this region, especially due to China’s growing influence.

Meanwhile, recent efforts by Vice President JD Vance and Defense Undersecretary Elbridge Colby have pushed the US to scale down involvement in West Asia.

Trump’s New Tariffs Raise Regional Concerns

Rubio’s visit comes shortly after Trump imposed fresh tariffs on several Asian countries. These include a 25% tariff on Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia, and a 40% tariff on goods from Laos.

These new tariffs will likely dominate discussions at the summit. The senior official told The Business Times that Rubio will assure ASEAN leaders the US wants to “rebalance” trade relationships, not disrupt them.

Rubio Postpones Japan and South Korea Legs

Originally, Rubio planned to begin his Asia trip with visits to Japan and South Korea. However, he postponed those meetings to stay involved in Gaza ceasefire talks, Nikkei reported.

In Japan, Rubio had scheduled talks with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya. They were set to discuss tariffs, West Asian conflicts, and security threats from China, Russia, and North Korea.

</excerpt>

Israel is more than ready to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, and the US has gone on high alert in response, a number of US officials told CBS News and The Washington Post. The Trump administration now worries that Israel can act alone if nuclear negotiations with Tehran fall through.

Washington has already started evacuating part of its embassy in Baghdad and is permitting the military families to withdraw from vital spots in the Middle East. In return, Iran has warned that it will retaliate by striking US bases if attacked. The move indicates a potential new war in the region, several months after the Israel-Hamas war.

Israel on Brink of Acting

Reports indicate that Israel has notified the US of its preparations to attack Iran’s nuclear sites. This follows as nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran grind to a halt. Trump aides now fear that Israel may act independently without American approval.

President Trump spoke directly on the matter on Wednesday. He said outright, “They can’t have a nuclear weapon. Very simple, they can’t have a nuclear weapon.”

US Evacuates Non-Essential Staff

With increasing security threats, the US has instructed all non-essential staff at its embassy in Baghdad to leave. A State Department release confirmed that the action is an expression of renewed commitment to safeguarding American lives at home and around the world.

The embassy has already had most of its staff withdrawn. Therefore, the new evacuation will not impact a high number of personnel. The US is also going to permit military families to evacuate from other Middle Eastern locations as a precautionary measure.

Speaking at the Kennedy Center in Washington on Wednesday night, Trump warned of the region’s volatility. “They are being moved out because it could be a dangerous place, and we’ll see what happens,” he said. “We’ve given notice to move out, and we’ll see what happens.”

Iran Threatens to Strike US Bases

Iran has warned the US directly. Washington is held accountable by Tehran because it is Israel’s principal supporter. Iranian Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh declared on Wednesday that Iran would respond by attacking US military installations in the region should Israel strike first.

With diplomacy failing and military threats escalating, tensions between Iran, Israel, and the US remain perilously high. The possibility of a wider regional war continues to escalate. All parties seem poised for escalation.

</excerpt>

In a gruesome act of violence that shook Washington, DC, police have identified Elias Rodriguez of Chicago, 30, as the suspect in the fatal shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum on Wednesday. The shooting claimed the lives of two Israeli Embassy employees and sparked widespread outrage over what the government is terming an act of anti-Semitic terrorism.

Police confirmed Rodriguez had no prior encounter with law enforcement. However, his action has caused shockwaves across both local and global communities. Witnesses observed him walking outside the museum before the attack. After the arrest, Elias Rodriguez allegedly chanted, “Free Palestine, Free Palestine,” Washington police chief Pamela Smith said.

The shooting was in the area of 3rd and F streets in Northwest DC, near important federal buildings such as an FBI field office and the US Attorney’s Office. A gun was recovered at the scene. The authorities think the two victims, a man and a woman, were a couple. Tal Naim Cohen, the spokesman for the Israeli embassy, said both were employees and were shot “at close range” while going to a Jewish cultural event at the museum.

Officials Denounce Anti-Semitic Violence

Israel’s United Nations ambassador, Danny Danon, denounced the murders as “a depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism.” He said he had faith in the US government, adding, “I am confident that the U.S. authorities will take strong action against those responsible for this criminal act.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem offered her sympathies and committed federal assistance to the ongoing investigation. President Donald Trump, in a Truth Social statement, heavily condemned the attack:
“These terrible D.C. murders, based clearly on antisemitism, must cease, NOW! Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA. Condolences to the families of the victims. So sad that such things as this can occur! God Bless You ALL!”

Community Demands Accountability

Even though the motive remains a subject of investigation, the initial reports have once again reignited fears of increased hate crimes and concerns over the security of Jewish institutions in the United States.

As federal officials now spearhead the probe, both government authorities and the community alike are urgently demanding swift justice. Moreover, they are calling for effective measures to prevent such acts of violence in the future.

Federal agencies have launched a full investigation.
</excerpt>

In a horrific act of violence near the center of Washington, DC, attackers fatally shot two Israeli Embassy staff members Wednesday night outside the Capital Jewish Museum. Israeli authorities labeled the incident an anti-Semitic act of terrorism, raising fears of diplomatic and religious safety in the US capital.

Attack Unfolds Near FBI Headquarters

The shooting was a few steps from the FBI’s Washington Field Office and prompted immediate actions from local and federal officials. US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the fatalities on the social media site X and highlighted the gravity of the investigation. “Two members of staff from the Israeli Embassy were brutally murdered tonight close to the Jewish Museum in Washington, DC. We are currently investigating and trying to find more information to share.”. Kindly pray for the victims’ families. We will see that this heinous offender faces justice,” Noem tweeted.

Two Israeli Embassy staff were senselessly killed tonight near the Jewish Museum in Washington, DC. We are actively investigating and working to get more information to share. Please pray for the families of the victims.

Officials have not made the victims’ names public, but several reports confirm they served at the Israeli diplomatic mission. The Israeli Embassy confirmed the sad incident but asserted that the ambassador had not been present when the attack took place.

Federal Authorities Lead Coordinated Response

Police departments, including the Washington, DC police department, were quick to respond to the scene. Police officers cordoned off the area surrounding the museum and are interviewing witnesses and examining surveillance footage. The Capital Jewish Museum, inaugurated in its new location in 2023, was hosting an event organized by the American Jewish Committee (AJC) at the time of the shooting.

🚨 JUST IN: A man and woman were shot and killed in front of the Capital Jewish Museum in Northwest D.C. Wednesday evening.

AJC CEO Ted Deutch quickly responded, saying, “We are shocked that a heinous act of violence occurred outside the venue.”

US Attorney General Pam Bondi and acting US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro also reached the location shortly after the attack occurred. Bondi assured the nation that federal authorities have launched an all-encompassing response and will provide updates as soon as possible.

Global Condemnation and Diplomatic Impact

Israel’s envoy to the UN, Danny Danon, criticized the attack on X, describing it as a “depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism.” The incident has elicited sharp responses from US and Israeli officials and may result in heightened security at diplomatic sites in the capital.

This deadly act not only underscores the ongoing danger of anti-Semitism but also reveals weaknesses in the security of foreign diplomatic missions. While the authorities mount a search for the gunman, the world is watching.

U.S. President Donald Trump shared his concern on Sunday over Joe Biden’s recent prostate cancer diagnosis. In a post on Truth Social, Trump extended warm wishes to Biden and his family, despite their history of political rivalry.

“Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery,” Trump wrote.

Biden Diagnosed with Aggressive Prostate Cancer

Biden’s office confirmed that the 82-year-old former president has been diagnosed with a severe form of prostate cancer, which has already spread to his bones. His family is currently exploring treatment options.

According to the official statement, the diagnosis came after Biden reported worsening urinary symptoms. Medical examinations revealed a prostate nodule, and further tests confirmed a high-grade cancer.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterised by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone. While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management,” the statement said.

Rare Bipartisan Support

Trump, who returned to the White House after defeating Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, has often criticized Biden publicly, frequently using the nickname “Sleepy Joe.” However, his message of support stood out as a rare example of unity during a challenging time for Biden.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris also responded with words of encouragement. In a post on X, she and her husband, Douglas Emhoff, expressed sympathy for Biden and his family.

“Doug and I are saddened to learn of President Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis. We are keeping him, Dr. Biden, and their entire family in our hearts and prayers during this time,” Harris said.

She praised Biden’s strength and positive spirit, adding, “Joe is a fighter — and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.”

As Biden begins considering treatment options, messages of support have poured in from across the political spectrum, reflecting the gravity of his health condition and the respect he commands from many current and former leaders.

</excerpt>

The Chinese tech giant Huawei is the target of a global crackdown by US President Donald Trump. His government has issued a warning that any business, even one operating outside of the US, that uses Huawei’s cutting-edge AI chips may be subject to criminal charges.

This bold move aggressively targets Huawei’s increasing influence in global AI development and broadens the scope of US export control laws.

Huawei’s AI Push is Tightened by the US

This broad warning came from the US Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security. It made it very evident that the Ascend 910B, 910C, and 910D AI chips from Huawei are subject to current US export regulations. Officials contend that the design of these chips and the equipment used to produce them both depend on software or technology of US origin.

The bureau broadened the interpretation of existing laws but did not publish a new rule. It made it clear that using AI chips made by Huawei anywhere in the world, regardless of the user or location, is against US export regulations.

Kevin Wolf, an export control attorney, supported this explanation. “The guidance publicly confirms how far the United States intends to extend its regulatory reach under current laws,” he said.

Washington Reaction

After witnessing Huawei’s quick development of cutting-edge AI chips despite severe sanctions, US officials took action. Strong chip clusters constructed with Huawei’s 910C processors have already been put into use. Although each chip might not be as good as Nvidia’s on its own, Huawei asserts that its combined performance now on par with, if not better than, that of United States rivals.

Washington is extremely uneasy about this quick progress. The US’s technological leadership is currently seriously threatened by Huawei’s growing dominance in AI hardware.

Nvidia Takes Center Stage

Donald Trump‘s directive’s timing is strategically significant. He made significant announcements about Nvidia during his trip to Saudi Arabia at the same time. Humain, the recently established state-owned artificial intelligence company in Saudi Arabia, pledged during the visit to use hundreds of thousands of Nvidia chips to construct AI infrastructure.

Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, recognized the growing danger. He referred to Huawei as “one of the most formidable technology companies in the world” and advocated for US policies that support the competitiveness of American businesses.

US Strategy Indicates a Tech War Escalation

Donald Trump’s order demonstrates his tough stance against China. The administration wants to halt Huawei’s global aspirations by stating that using Huawei chips anywhere is illegal under US law. Although the action aims to safeguard US firms like Nvidia, it also poses challenging issues.

In the tech war, the US has set a fresh line. Targeting Huawei’s global chip consumption has let Trump’s team intensify the AI fight. Tensions between two rival technological superpowers are rising right now and the world observes. The chip war concerns who shapes artificial intelligence’s future rather than only manufacturing now.

The protests reflected ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had resigned. The demonstrations also highlighted cases of religious minority violence in the nation. In a report by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, mass violence broke out in mid-2024 when protests by students over employment quotas compelled Hasina to resign and flee to India. The violence was said to have resulted in targeted attacks on Hindus and other minorities, with mobs burning down houses and places of worship.

Hindus, who make up about 8% of Bangladesh’s 170 million population, were heavily impacted by the violence. Reports by news agency AP quote the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council as recording 2,010 cases of communal violence in the period August 4 to 20 last year. They comprised attacks on 69 temples, acts of arson and vandalism, and physical attacks, leaving casualties and injuries.

The crisis has also raised increased concerns regarding religious and ethnic persecution in Bangladesh. Washington protesters condemned the increasing violence and accused Yunus of not being able to safeguard minority communities. The Bangladeshi government, on the other hand, remains silent regarding the international condemnation and intervention calls. With tensions still high, international focus continues to be on the nation’s response to political and communal disturbances.

Trudeau’s impending exit adds urgency.
</excerpt>

While the US ponders economic sanctions on Canada, leaders from provinces and territories have arrived in Washington, DC, to beseech lawmakers on top of a change of mind. Their primary targets are clearly to seek pardons from the Trump administration, with many hoping to use their congruence with America as a bargaining chip concerning China.

Doug Ford, premier of Ontario and one of the most sought-after championists of the order, sounded the alarm bells for the proposition for 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods. Though many in the Trump administration support the tariffs publicly, Ford has claimed that many US lawmakers are against them behind the scenes.

Senators, congressmen, and governors from both parties told him that they saw this measure as “the craziest thing I ever heard.”

But Canadian leaders may or may not gain access to Trump’s inner circle, it is uncertain. British Columbia Premier David Eby pointed out the fact that, while victims have been arranged for the senior people, those very close to the president will likely confirm at the last minute.

To agitate the case before them, Canadian leaders are emphasizing their congruence with US trade on China. Ford lately proposed “Fortress Am-Can,” a program aimed at tracking US trade policies and limiting Chinese investment. He argues that China is trying to “hijack” global supply chains, pointing out that Canadian and American working lives are fed-up.

The provincial leaders, therefore, take the lead in responding to the Trump administration’s trade ethos as Trudeau prepares to step down on March 9. He resigned formally on January 6, in the meantime, he gets a limbo quality of being unclear as to when a successor will be elected.

</excerpt>

Since the visit of President Bill Clinton in March 2000, India -US Relations have expanded and deepened and have become strategically more aligned irrespective of the Change of and New Delhi and different political parties leading the Govt. Both countries have overcome the hesitation of history and have developed a degree of trust which was missing in the past. While the US has designated India as a major defence partner (2016) and elevated her to Strategic Trade Authorization tier 1 status (2018) envisaging licence free access to a wide range of military and dual use technologies, India has signed all the basic communication agreements: LEMOA (Logistics Exchange of Memorandum of agreement); COMCASA (Communications, Compatibility and Security Agreement); BECA (Basic Exchange & Cooperation Agreement) for Geo Spatial cooperation

India has emerged as one of the biggest defence importers of USA, in the last ten years, India has imported defence requirements from USA worth US$ 25 billion. American defence sales to India have included aircrafts like C-130-J Super Hercules, C-17 Globemaster III ; P -81 Poseidon’, MQ 9 B Sea Guardian and sky Guardian; helicopters such as CH-47F Chinooks , MH-60 R Sea Hawks, AH-64 E Apache and Harpoons anti-ship missiles and MK 777 Howitzers. Besides 300 joint military exercises, India -US are now cooperating in UN Peace Keeping and antipiracy efforts.
Though in his first term, Donald Trump had called India a Tariff King and loudly protested against custom duty on Harley Davidson bikes & withdrawn GSP facility and forced India to stop buying Iranian oil and start buying US oil and gas, complained about unfavourable balance of trade, bilateral trade between the two countries has only gone up; the US has regained its status as the largest trading partner of India; bilateral trade in 2024 crossed the figure of US$ 118.2 billion with trade surplus in India’s favour to the tune of US$ 36.8 billion; India’s oil and gas import from the US have reached US$ 14 billion.

It was during Trump’s first term that the level of the meetings of the QUAD was raised to the foreign Minister. On 31st May 2018, the US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis announced that” in recognition of the increasing connectivity of the Indian & Pacific oceans” the US Pacific Command was renamed as Indo Pacific Command. And Trump Admn underlined India’s importance both for QUAD as well as Indo Pacific Region.

Thus, during Turmp-o1, the US did pursue close bilateral as well as strategic relations with India; in Feb 2020, the relationship was elevated to the level of”: Comprehensive Global Strategic partnership. When China committed aggression against Indian in Galwan Valley in June 2020 Trump Admn was sharply critical of China’s aggression.
While we have some differences, the top leadership in the US & India haven’t allowed those differences to degenerate in to disputes. Showing enough maturity, they have tried to understand and each other’s raison d’etre and strive to arrive at workable common positions. This augurs well for both the countries.
In the light of the above, we shouldn’t ignore Trump’s numerous blunt and undiplomatic warnings. He relishes his image of a disrupter and an unbridled bully. But we shouldn’t take his words on their face value. He simplistically asserts that the whole world has been taking the US for a ride and makes exorbitant demands to make amends. But behind his rattling rhetoric, he is ready for a fair deal which he can boast to his diehard supporters as a major victory. Evidently, he is capable of unpredictable and out of box initiatives.

Compared to his intimidating and disparaging statements about the Canadian, Mexican, Panamian & Danish counterparts, his reference about India has, rather, been sober and moderate. The White House read out about his conversation with PM Modi says,” Two leaders discussed expanding and deepening cooperation. They also discussed a range of regional issues, including security in the Indo-pacific, the middle East and Europe. The President emphasised the importance of India increasing its procurement of American made security equipment and moving towards a fair bilateral trading relationship.” As for taking back illegal immigrants Trump reportedly said,” India will do the right thing.”

In his own way, Trump has laid out a road map for taking the relationship forwards; the measures he wants us to take are doable. We should assure him that we are all for his MAGA goal but also seek a helping hand to PM Modi’s endeavours to make India a developed nation by 2047.The is no inherent Conflict of interest; we can constructively complement each other.

There is considerable scope for reducing import duties on a range of items exported by the US; we should do so in our own interest; it will also bridge the trade imbalance. But we must also demand access to the US Market for more Indian products. We should press for an FTA which Trump talked about in his first term but couldn’t materialise. The restoration of the GSP looks unlikely; when we talk about becoming the third largest economy of the world in the next 2-3 years, we shouldn’t press for it.

Our Army, Airforce and the Navy have a long inventory list for their requirements which should make Trump happy. But we must press for joint research and joint production; production of GE Jet Engine F414 in collaboration with HAL with transfer of 80% technology shows the way. The agreement for the establishment of a cutting-edge facility for the fabrication of semiconductors called Shakti in Jewar in UP is another pathbreaking game changer. Modi should insist that agreement on iCET (emerging and critical technologies) reached during his predecessor which cover vast areas of technological cooperation should be continued. Similarly IMEEC( ,India -Middle East -Europe Economic Corridor) is an initiative with huge prospects.

There are roughly 7.5 lakhs illegal Indians in USA. According to some estimate, around 17,500 might be sent back. The conditions in which the first flight brought them created a huge uproar in India. We have evacuated Indians from war zones like Libya and Ukraine. We should seek American authorities’ agreement to send the illegal Indians back on Indian planes sent by the Indian govt.

As for H1B visa, Trump, Musk and several Tech companies don’t want it to be too restrictive as it will affect their productivity negatively. Let them adopt a sensible approach.
Vikram Misri, Foreign Secretary’s comments to the media sum up the agenda of Modi-Trump talks,” There is a clear convergence of interests between the two countries in several areas, including trade, investment, technology, defence cooperation, counterterrorism, Indo-Pacific security, and people-to-people relations.”
“The 5.4 million-strong Indian community in the US and the more than 350,000 Indian students pursuing higher education in American universities further strengthen this bond.”
But shouldn’t we be wary of a possible thaw between USA & China?

* Surendra Kumar is a former Indian ambassador.

Recovery operations are ongoing, with 42 bodies recovered. Investigation continues into the crash involving a jet and Army helicopter, with safety concerns raised.
</excerpt>

Preliminary information from the crash that killed all six people on board indicated that the airliner and Army helicopter had conflicting altitude readings. The collision occurred near Reagan National Airport, where an American Airlines flight and a Black Hawk helicopter were involved. This is considered to be the deadliest crash in the US in nearly 25 years.

The flight recorder of the jet showed that it was at 325 feet. However, according to the control tower data, the helicopter was at 200 feet, the maximum allowed. Investigators are reconciling these contradictions using data from the black box of the helicopter, which became waterlogged as it plunged into the Potomac River.

Was the Jet Trying to Avoid Collision?

Just seconds before impact, the flight recorder captured a change in pitch of the jet, and the question now is whether this was an evasive maneuver attempt by the pilots. It is just an incredible miracle of survival and the NTSB cannot tell if it is another factor that is, that the pilots have tried to avoid the crash,” it said.

NTSB Demands Aviation Safety Reforms

The National Transportation Safety Board demanded aviation safety reforms after the incident. Member Todd Inman said he was frustrated that hundreds of recommendations were not acted upon, adding that adopting those recommendations would save lives.

Every effort is on at the site for the recovery of wreckage. Over 300 personnel are on site, sorting through the tricky task of extracting remains from the Potomac River. 42 people’s bodies have been recovered so far, and officials have been trying to account for all remains.

FAA Limits Helicopter Traffic After Trump’s Comments

Following the statement by President Donald Trump that the helicopter was above 200 feet, the FAA prohibited helicopter traffic around Reagan National Airport; however, there is no proof of such evidence by the president, and the investigation is ongoing.
Impact of Washington Airspace and Historical Context

This is the worst crash in the US since 2001 and underlines just how difficult it is to navigate the crowded airspace around Reagan National Airport. It spurred questioning both of military pilot action and air traffic control procedures.

The talks will address Israeli positions, hostage releases, and ongoing discussions with Egypt and Qatar.
</excerpt>

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to start the negotiation process of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire when he meets with US President Donald Trump’s Middle East Envoy, Steve Witkoff, in Washington on Monday. Netanyahu will leave Israel on Sunday for the meeting where the two will discuss Israel’s position on the ceasefire and the current hostages’ situation in Gaza.

The ceasefire is implemented in three phases, between Israel and Hamas, which they agreed on last month. That has stopped the fighting in Gaza, Hamas freed 18 hostages for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners but still holds more than 70 hostages in Gaza.

After the meeting with Netanyahu, Witkoff will also be meeting officials from Egypt and Qatar, who have been key facilitators in Israeli-Hamas dialogue, with assistance from Washington. The talks are important as both parties continue to navigate the tense situation in Gaza, where the situation remains very volatile.

Donald Trump blamed diversity initiatives for the crash, sparking outrage. Social media users trended “Impeach Donald Trump,” criticizing his remarks and recent air traffic controller firings.
</excerpt>

Social media filled up with demands for President Donald Trump’s impeachment in the aftermath of the tragic midair collision of an American Airlines plane and a Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River, claiming 67 lives. The backlash occurred after Trump blamed aviation standards for the crash while attributing the cause to diversity initiatives.

The authorities announced that air traffic control staff was reduced at the time of the accident, with Trump having recently fired 3,000 controllers the previous week.

Defending his policies, Trump stated, “We must have only the highest standards for those who work in our aviation system. I changed the Obama standards from very mediocre at best to extraordinary, you remember that. Only the highest aptitude, they have to be the highest intellect and psychologically superior people, were allowed to qualify for air traffic controllers.”

Trump also jabbed at former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, calling him “a real winner.” Buttigieg said, “President Trump now oversees the military and the FAA. One of his first acts was to fire 3000 and suspend some of the key personnel who helped keep our skies safe.”

Public Anger Calls for Impeachment

This sparked public anger as the hashtag ‘Impeach Donald Trump’ went viral on all social media. Users were condemned in response to his reaction. A person on X stated, “Donald Trump today blamed the air collision in DC on diversity in the air transport workforce. Yes, he did. Vance came on and repeated the claim. </excerpt>

Almost 16 years passed from the deadly regional jet crash of 2009 near Buffalo that killed all 50 people aboard before the devastating collision between a military helicopter and an American Airlines flight over Washington. An American Airlines flight crashed into the Potomac River after it had collided with the military helicopter that was carrying three people; on board the plane were 64 passengers and 4 crew members.

Currently, approximately 300 first responders are searching in the icy waters of the Potomac. At least 18 fatalities have been confirmed, and no survivors have been recovered from the river. Operations at Reagan National Airport have been suspended.

In the midst of rescue operations, aerial photos of the wreckage are all over the internet. They depict the destroyed remains of the DC-bound American Airlines flight where the fuselage is barely identifiable.

US President Donald Trump, who was updated on the same, also went on to tweet his condolences and thanks to the first responders. He wrote, “I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident which just took place at Reagan National Airport. May God bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise.”

In a post on Truth Social, President Trump further elaborated, saying, “The aeroplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport. The helicopter was going straight at the aeroplane for an extended period of time. It is a clear night, the lights of the plane were blazing, why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn.”. Why could not the control tower have told the helicopter what to do instead of asking whether they saw the plane? This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. Not Good!

Hamaad Raza, awaiting his wife’s arrival, expressed his fears. Rescue teams responded urgently, but more casualties are expected.
</excerpt>

Hamaad Raza was waiting for his wife at Reagan National Airport in Washington DC when he saw the sudden rush of activity and rescue teams heading towards the Potomac River. The American Airlines flight she was on had collided with a military helicopter while trying to land.

My wife texted me that she is landing in 20 minutes, Raza said to CBS News. “I am just praying someone is pulling her out of the river right now.”

Teams of rescuers put boats in the Potomac, and light towers have lit up the area, but law enforcement helicopters were hovering overhead as bodies mounted to 18 and more injured were feared to be on board.

Details of the Crash

The incident happened in one of the most surveilled atmospheres of the world. The plane crashed three miles south of the White House and the US Capitol. The flight tracking data shows that the Bombardier CRJ-701, an aircraft of the regional jet and made in Canada, was made to land on approach towards Reagan National when suddenly it lost altitude over the Potomac River. Immediately before the crash, air traffic controllers had cleared the plane to land on Runway 33.

The FAA says that only 30 seconds before the impact, the air traffic controller contacted the helicopter, asking if it had the jet in sight. The controller later instructed the helicopter to pass behind the jet, but the two aircraft collided midair.

A nearby camera at the Kennedy Center caught footage showing two sets of lights merging into a fireball at the time of the crash. The radio transponder from the plane had stopped transmitting around 2,400 feet from the runway directly over the river.

Government Response

After the crash, President Donald Trump expressed his condolences. He said, “I have been fully briefed on this terrible accident,” and added, “May God Bless their souls.”

Reagan National Airport was immediately shut down. Operations were expected to resume by 5 a.m. on Friday. The airport is a key entry point for tourists visiting Washington D.C., providing scenic views of landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and US Capitol.

This crash has brought back memories of the 1982 Air Florida disaster, when an airliner plunged into the Potomac killing 78 people. The accident marks the first fatal accident involving a US commercial airliner since 2009, when a similar tragedy near Buffalo, New York, claimed 50 lives.

As rescuers search for survivors in the Potomac River, Trump blamed the helicopter pilots and air traffic control.
</excerpt>

Even as rescue teams continue their search for survivors in the Potomac River, U.S. President Donald Trump has already started assigning blame for the mid-air collision between an American Airlines aircraft and a U.S. Army helicopter.

The accident occurred on Wednesday night when an American Airlines plane carrying 60 passengers and four crew members collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter with three personnel onboard. The plane was in the process of approaching Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia. According to CBS News, a police official confirmed that 18 bodies have been recovered so far.

Hours later after the crash, Trump resorted to spinning the cause on Truth Social by blaming the Army helicopter pilots and air traffic control, respectively.

“The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport. The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time.”. It is a clear night, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn. Why didn’t the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane. This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. Not good! (sic)” said Trump.

While building the suspense around the chopper crash, Russia’s state-run media also hyped it. RT, a pro-Kremlin media outlet, cited X to say that the variant of Black Hawk the crashed helicopter is usually designed to carry top officials, suggesting that “it probably left from CIA HQ too.”

RT’s claims were, of course, rejected by the U.S. Army.

Fox News Chief National Security Correspondent Jennifer Griffin reported that the U.S. Army stated: “No senior officials onboard the Blackhawk helicopter that crashed into American Airlines flight near Reagan National Airport.”

Additionally, the U.S. Army confirmed to Griffin that the helicopter was on a training flight.

Trump’s 2025 Administration’s Game-Changing Policies Revealed

<excerpt>Trump’s second term plans to overhaul immigration, strengthen economic policies with tariffs, promote fossil fuels, reshape foreign alliances, and potentially issue pardons. His bold agenda seeks to impact domestic and international priorities.
</excerpt>

As President-elect Donald Trump prepares for his second term in the Oval Office, expectations are running high for his administration’s direction. With promises of significant reforms both domestically and internationally, Trump is determined to leave a mark on the United States’ role in the world. His administration’s focus remains on the “America First” agenda, prioritising a hardline approach to immigration, economic reform, and foreign alliances.

A Hardline Stance on Immigration

One of Trump’s most ambitious proposals is his aggressive immigration reform plan. His press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, emphasised that securing the southern border will be a top priority. Trump has promised executive orders aimed at significantly reducing illegal immigration, including what he has dubbed “the largest mass deportation” in American history.

Veteran immigration official Tom Homan has been appointed as “border tsar,” and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem will oversee homeland security. Trump’s administration is expected to revive policies such as “Remain in Mexico,” requiring asylum seekers to wait there as their claims are processed. However, proposals like ending birthright citizenship could face significant legal and political hurdles.

Economic Policies: Tariffs, Energy, and Regulation

Trump’s economic agenda remains centered on domestic manufacturing and self-sufficiency. The former president has proposed sweeping tariffs on imports, including a 10% universal tariff and a 60% tax on goods from China. He also warned that both Mexico and Canada could face tariffs unless they address border security issues and cross-border crime.

On energy, Trump plans to expand fossil fuel projects, including oil drilling and fracking, while scaling back clean energy initiatives. “We’re drilling, drilling, drilling,” he remarked, underscoring his commitment to increasing domestic energy production and lowering costs for consumers. Additionally, Trump aims to repeal environmental regulations under the Biden administration and push back against measures that he believes hinder economic growth.

Foreign Policy: Reclaiming America’s Standing

Trump’s foreign policy approach will include withdrawing from international climate agreements and revisiting long-standing alliances. A key objective is to exit the Paris Climate Agreement, putting a stronger emphasis on domestic energy production. His relationship with Israel remains a focal point, with unwavering support pledged, though complex moments with Israeli leadership have occurred.

In Asia, Trump plans to revoke China’s Most Favoured Nation trade status and restrict Chinese investment in U.S. real estate. He also aims to address what he perceives as an unfair financial burden borne by the U.S. in NATO, advocating for greater contributions from European nations.

Trump’s stance on the war in Ukraine is another area of concern. He has proposed negotiating an end to the conflict by facilitating talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, though the specifics of these discussions remain unclear.

Legal Challenges and the Power of Pardon

One of the most discussed topics surrounding Trump’s second term is the potential for presidential pardons, particularly for those involved in the January 6th Capitol riots. Trump has signaled that he is inclined to pardon many of the rioters, though he’s reluctant to do so for everyone.

With Special Counsel Jack Smith reportedly planning to resign before Trump assumes office, there is speculation that Trump may attempt to pardon himself for federal crimes. This would be an unprecedented move, adding another layer of complexity to his legal challenges.

Trump’s Determination to Reshape America

From immigration to economic reforms and foreign alliances, Trump’s second term will likely include bold and contentious moves. His agenda reflects a strong commitment to reshaping the United States’ trajectory, while navigating complex legal and political challenges. As Trump himself declared, his administration is ready to “make heads spin,” signaling the potential for radical changes across various policy sectors.

</excerpt>

Two senior Taiwanese officials have travelled to the United States to meet individuals connected to President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team, sources revealed. The meetings aim to strengthen ties between Taipei and the incoming administration as geopolitical tensions with China escalate.

Lin Fei-fan and Hsu Szu-chien, deputy secretaries-general of Taiwan’s National Security Council, are in the Washington area this week with their staff for discussions, according to five sources who spoke on condition of anonymity. While the agenda and US participants remain unconfirmed, the sources suggested the meetings involve Republicans likely to hold mid-tier positions in the Trump administration.

Taiwan’s presidential office described the visit as routine and declined to comment further. The Trump transition team and China’s embassy have not responded to requests for statements.

The visit comes as Beijing intensifies military activities near the Taiwan Strait, which Taipei interprets as an effort to set boundaries for the incoming US administration. Chinese military maneuvers have coincided with rising concern over how Trump’s policies might reshape US-China-Taiwan relations.

The sources indicated that Lin and Hsu’s meetings are informal and exclude top Trump administration nominees to avoid provoking Beijing. One source noted the discussions are with “old friends,” while another described the meetings as part of Taiwan’s strategy to connect with key figures in US politics.

Trump’s election win has generated mixed reactions in Taiwan. While some hope for a tougher US stance on China, there is anxiety over Trump’s comments suggesting Taiwan should pay more for US defense support. Taipei has shown interest in pursuing new arms deals as a gesture of commitment to defense readiness under Trump’s presidency.

Trump’s previous outreach to Taiwan stirred controversy, including a historic phone call with Taiwan’s then-President Tsai Ing-wen in December 2016. That call marked the first direct communication between a US president-elect and Taiwan’s leader since 1979, angering Beijing.

As Trump prepares for his second inauguration on January 20, reports suggest he has extended an invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping a gesture that could redefine US-China diplomacy. Both Trump’s camp and Beijing have yet to confirm the report, but the president-elect recently emphasized his positive rapport with Xi.

</excerpt>

As the country prepares for another major electoral event, Washington, D.C. is filled with tension. With only days left until a new Commander-in-Chief is announced, the mood is more anxious than the typical excitement associated with elections. The pressing concern extends beyond the question of who will emerge victorious; it also revolves around the potential consequences that will follow.

Past turmoil

Capitol Hill, a hallmark of American democracy, still shows the effects of past electoral turmoil. The haunting memory of January 6, 2021, when hundreds of Trump supporters breached security and vandalized the Capitol, weighs heavily on the minds of many. On that day, senators and congress members were forced into secure locations as the crowd attempted to overturn the election results, raising fears that history could repeat itself if Donald Trump were to lose again.

Must Read: LeBron James Backs Kamala Harris In Bid For Presidency

In light of these concerns, authorities are implementing extensive security measures. Nearly 2,100 officers have been deployed—300 more than were present during the January 2021 events. Key areas designated for protests have been fenced off, and popular gathering spots near the White House, such as Lafayette Park, have been partially closed to mitigate the risk of unrest.

Washington’s governor has also mobilized National Guard units, ready for rapid deployment if necessary. These troops are positioned as a vital backup to assist local law enforcement in maintaining order.

Sentiments among residents

Despite these precautions, many residents are on edge. The violent protests during Trump’s 2017 inauguration and the Capitol riots have left a lasting mark on the community. Businesses are taking extra measures, boarding up their storefronts in anticipation of possible unrest. Local feelings reveal a deep concern about the potential for violence and upheaval as the city stands at the intersection of America’s internal conflicts.

William Cleveland, a local resident, articulated the frustration shared by many: “It’s a sad state for the democracy in the United States. Why should freedom have to (be) protect your own property when you disagree with somebody… Doesn’t make any sense.” Another resident, Kamara Walker, conveyed her anxiety about the upcoming days, stating, “We all know what happens when things doesn’t go (Donald) Trump’s way. He incites his followers to protests in violent ways and I think is smart… I actually work a couple of blocks down in a government building and I don’t want to come to work on Tuesday. I think it’s going to be hectic and crazy. I wish we would be off.”

Dilemma

For officials, striking a balance between public safety and the right to peaceful assembly poses a significant challenge. The National Mall, a historic venue for protests, is open for demonstrations, but authorities are wary of allowing opposing groups to gather simultaneously, fearing potential confrontations. So far, nine left-leaning organizations have applied for permits to protest, adding complexity to the decision-making process.

The real difficulty may extend beyond election day. Historical patterns indicate that the aftermath of electoral disputes can result in intense confrontations weeks later, as seen during the January 6 Capitol riots. As a result, the upcoming week may only signify the beginning of a tense period for the nation’s capital.

Global audience

As global attention turns to Washington, the international media is poised to cover the unfolding events. The stakes are significant: will there be a smooth transition of power, or will we see another fracture in the pillars of US democracy? The days ahead are critical, not only for the immediate political situation but also for the long-term viability of the democratic process in America. The outcome remains unpredictable, along with the possibility of unrest that could echo across the nation.

Dying In Darkness?”: Washington Post Ends 30-Year Candidate Endorsements

<excerpt>For the first time in 30 years, the Washington Post will not endorse a presidential candidate, a decision met with fierce backlash from staff and media figures.
</excerpt>

Washington, D.C.: In a surprising shift, the Washington Post announced it will not endorse a candidate in the upcoming presidential election—marking the first time in over three decades the paper has refrained from taking a stance. The decision, coming just days before the 2024 election, has led to heated reactions from former editors, current staff, and the general public.

Publisher Will Lewis Cites Return to Independent Journalism

Will Lewis, the Washington Post’s publisher, stated that this decision reflects a “return to our roots,” with the paper choosing not to endorse presidential candidates. Lewis noted that the Washington Post’s responsibility lies in providing non-partisan journalism, allowing readers to form their own opinions on the candidates. This new approach, he emphasized, aligns with the values of “character and courage in service to the American ethic.”

Backlash from Staff and Media Figures

The reaction among Washington Post staffers and former leadership has been overwhelmingly negative. Marty Baron, former executive editor of the Post, criticized the move as “cowardice,” warning that it could embolden figures like Donald Trump to target the paper’s owner, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos. Pulitzer Prize-winning editor David Maraniss expressed disappointment, while longtime columnist Robert Kagan reportedly resigned in protest.

Criticism from Notable Public Figures

Susan Rice, former U.S. ambassador to the UN, condemned the decision as “hypocritical,” noting that it undermines the paper’s “Democracy Dies in Darkness” slogan. Multiple sources report that the Post’s editorial board had prepared an endorsement for Vice President Kamala Harris, only for it to be overruled by top executives. This sudden reversal left staff “stunned,” with several stating they were shocked and disappointed.

A Broader Trend Among Major Newspapers?

The Post’s decision mirrors a similar move from the Los Angeles Times, whose publisher, Patrick Soon-Shiong, also blocked a planned endorsement of Harris earlier this week. This shift has sparked a debate within the journalism community about the role of editorial endorsements in upholding democratic values, especially in highly polarized times. In contrast, other prominent newspapers, like the New York Times and the Guardian, have endorsed Kamala Harris as “the only choice” for president.

Reactions Reflect Larger Concerns Over Media’s Role in Democracy

The Washington Post Guild, representing many of the paper’s journalists, released a statement expressing “deep concern” over the decision, which they argue deviates from the role of the editorial board in helping readers navigate consequential choices. The Guild claims some readers have already canceled their subscriptions, feeling let down by a paper once regarded as a standard-bearer for democratic principles.

As the Washington Post pivots towards a more neutral stance in its editorial practice, the backlash it faces underscores ongoing tensions within journalism about the responsibility to endorse leaders and the impact such decisions have on public trust.

</excerpt>

President Volodymyr Zelensky returns to the U.S. Capital on Wednesday to strengthen relationships with lawmakers. For securing future aid for Ukraine and to express gratitude for the $175 billion in assistance already approved since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

During his visit, which coincides with this week’s NATO summit in Washington, Zelenskiy is expected to meet with the leaders of the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as key committees involved in defense, spending, diplomacy, and national security. “It’s an incredibly important mission, and we’ve got to stand by Ukraine,” Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Mark Warner told Reuters.

Zelensky’s visit occurs amid significant uncertainty regarding the upcoming U.S. presidential election. Incumbent Democrat Joe Biden, a strong supporter of aid to Ukraine, is running against former Republican President Donald Trump, who has expressed skepticism about continued support. Biden’s uneven debate performance on June 27 and low public approval ratings have raised concerns about his re-election prospects and his ability to manage the demands of his position for another term.

A few congressional Democrats have called for Biden to step aside for another candidate to challenge Trump. Last month, Reuters reported that two of Trump’s advisers had presented him with a plan to end Russia’s war in Ukraine if he wins the November 5 election. The plan involves pressuring Kyiv by limiting U.S. weapons supplies to encourage peace talks.

In Congress, many of Trump’s closest allies have consistently voted against aiding Zelensky’s government. However, Democrats and internationally focused Republicans have collaborated to approve the $175 billion in aid to Ukraine. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, a close Trump ally, shifted his stance in April—months after Biden’s request—and allowed a House vote that passed $61 billion in assistance for Ukraine.

When Zelensky last visited Congress in December, Johnson had opposed Biden’s request for additional funding. The House’s recent passage of the supplemental spending package by 311 to 112, with “no” votes from conservative Republicans allied with Trump, has fueled concerns that Trump’s party may block further aid if they gain control of the House, Senate, and White House in November.

However, in his first major national security address this week, Johnson acknowledged that Russia poses a threat beyond Ukraine and emphasized American voter support for the aid during his travels across the country. “People understand that [Russian President Vladimir Putin] would not stop if he took Kyiv. He’s a ruthless dictator in my view,” Johnson stated.

The incident, captured on video, occurred at Taste of Heaven Espresso in south Seattle on June 11, according to Fox News.

The video, shared on Instagram by @foxnews, depicts a customer throwing two drinks through the drive-through window before returning to his vehicle. At this point, Emma Lee, the barista, shattered the car’s windshield.

Lee, 23, explained that the confrontation began after a contentious 15-minute argument over the cost of a coffee and water order, as reported by Fox News. “You don’t get to name your own price,” Lee said in her defense.

Lee detailed that the regular customer had ordered a large coffee and water, typically totaling around $22 (Rs 1,836, approximately), though she usually charged him $20 (Rs 1,669, approximately). However, he insisted on paying less this time. “No one is forcing you to come here,” Lee stressed, noting that all prices are clearly displayed.

Lee claimed that the customer became aggressive, yelling, spitting, and trying to force open the drive-through window. In response to these actions, Lee felt the need to protect herself and her property.

Lee has filed misdemeanor and assault charges against the customer, according to Fox News. The customer has been banned from the establishment, reported KCPQ, a local outlet.

The incident has sparked an online debate, with some supporting Lee’s actions as self-defense, while others question the proportionality of her response.

One user commented, “he needs jail.” Another remarked, “I love how uniformly everyone is supporting the girl here. Even across political lines. Also ‘bikini-clad barista’ is an insane line. This isn’t the 1950s.”

A third user said, “Girl, that’s not enough.. you should do more and harder.” Another added, “What is wrong with people that he thinks it’s okay to throw a drink at someone? People are really losing their minds and acting entitled and rude over nothing.”

</excerpt>

US President Joe Biden has signed into law a $94bn foreign funding bill that includes military aid to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, ending a months-long legislative impasse in Washington over the assistance.

Biden hailed the passage of the law on Wednesday as a “good day for world peace”, saying that the measure makes the United States safer.

The package will provide Israel with $17bn in additional aid despite growing calls for restricting US assistance to the country over abuses in Gaza, where the Israeli military has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians.

However, the US president framed the new assistance as an effort to help Israel protect itself from attacks against Iran.

“My commitment to Israel – I want to make clear again – is ironclad,” Biden told reporters. “The security of Israel is critical.”

Palestinian rights advocates were quick to denounce the measure, stressing that Israel stands accused before the International Criminal Court of committing genocide against Palestinians.

“It is beyond unconscionable that Congress and President Biden are sending the Israeli military billions of dollars worth of weapons – with no strings attached – to massacre, starve, and expel Palestinian civilians,” IfNotNow, a youth-led progressive Jewish group, said in a statement.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said Biden “passed the moral point of no return” by signing the bill.

“President Biden has betrayed the soul of our nation and disregarded the will of the American people, who overwhelmingly support a ceasefire and oppose unconditional aid to Israel,” CAIR director Nihad Awad said in a statement.

The US Senate approved the bill on Tuesday in a 79-18 vote. Days earlier, the House of Representatives also adopted the measure.

Late on Tuesday, US Senator Bernie Sanders decried the approval of the supplemental foreign funding bill, calling it a “dark day” for the US Senate. He added that Washington should not fund right-wing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s war on Gaza.

“The housing in Gaza is destroyed; the infrastructure in Gaza is destroyed; the health care system in Gaza is destroyed; the educational system in Gaza is destroyed. Enough is enough,” Sanders said in a statement.

The measure had stalled in Congress for months amid competing political agendas.

Some Republicans have expressed growing scepticism about sending more taxpayer dollars to Ukraine as the Russian invasion of the country grinds on more than two years after it began. But Democrats insisted on passing the bill to provide foreign aid to Ukraine and Israel together.

On Wednesday, Biden stressed the importance of the new law and its implications for the battlefield in Ukraine, where Russian forces have made some gains in recent months.

“Now, Americans are going to send Ukraine the supplies they need to keep them in the fight,” he told reporters.

The law allocates $61bn for Ukraine. It also sets aside $9bn for humanitarian assistance around the world, some of which can go to Gaza.

“We’re going to immediately secure that aid and surge it, including food, medical supplies, clean water,” Biden said. “And Israel must make sure all this aid reaches the Palestinians in Gaza without delay.”
Israel has been imposing a siege in Gaza, severely restricting the entry of food and other vital supplies, bringing the territory of more than 2 million people to the verge of famine.

In a statement on April 4, Biden rebuked Israel, suggesting that Washington would reconsider its support for the offensive in Gaza if the Israeli government does not allow more aid and take steps to protect civilians in the territory.

Since then, Israel has pushed on with its blockade and intensified its attacks on Gaza. This week, more than 300 bodies were discovered in mass graves near the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, where the Israeli army had recently conducted an operation.

But the Biden administration has muted its criticism of Israel as tensions between the US ally and Iran intensified in recent weeks. Instead, Washington has repeatedly asserted that its support of Israel remains “ironclad”.

Iran had launched hundreds of drones and missiles against Israel on April 13 in retaliation for a deadly Israeli air raid against Tehran’s consulate in Damascus. Pentagon officials say that US forces in the region helped Israel shoot down most of the Iranian projectiles.

On Wednesday, Biden stressed US support for Israel against Iran. “I will always make sure that Israel has what it needs to defend itself against Iran and terrorists it supports,” he said.

</excerpt>

Several analysts have raised concerns that the renewed military cooperation between North Korea and Russia in 2023 could increase threats to global security in the coming years, Voice of America (VOA) reported.

As Russia’s war in Ukraine approaches its second anniversary, Moscow has turned to North Korea for help in replenishing its depleted stockpile of arms. In exchange, Russia has suggested that it will help develop weapons that Pyongyang wants, including a spy satellite.

On November 28, North Korea claimed that a satellite it launched into orbit took photos of critical US sites, including the Norfolk Naval Station, the Newport News shipyard, the White House and the Pentagon.

On the other hand, the South Korean intelligence agency believes Pyongyang was able to launch the satellite only because of technological assistance from Russia, VOA reported, citing South Korean lawmakers who were briefed by the agency in late November. Previous launch attempts failed in May and August.

Indo-Pacific countries, including Taiwan and Australia, as well as European countries such as the UK, France and Ukraine, described the satellite launch as a threat to their national security.

“We fear in particular that Russian counterparts [are acting] for the benefit of the North Korean regime,” said French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna following a November 23 meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing.
She said these actions are causing “destabilizing activities in the region in defiance of [UN] Security Council resolutions.”

Notably, China has not condemned Pyongyang’s satellite launch or the arms dealings between North Korea and Russia. It has also not used its leverage to curb North Korea’s threatening behaviour despite multiple requests from Washington and Seoul, VOA reported.
Robert Rapson, charge d’affaires and deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Seoul from 2018 to 2021, said Beijing does not feel threatened by these developments.
“In fact, it probably views them as useful for its posture and policies towards the US, South Korea and Japan,” he said.

At a UN Security Council meeting on November 27, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Pyongyang’s satellite launch, which uses prohibited ballistic missile technology, is part of an effort to “advance its nuclear weapons delivery system.”
Ken Gause, senior adversary analytics specialist at the Center for Naval Analyses, said Moscow would be “willing to help” Pyongyang enhance its Hwasong-18 ICBMs.

North Korea on Monday conducted its fifth intercontinental ballistic missile test of the year. The missile was a Hwasong-18 ICBM, North Korea’s state-run KCNA said. It was the third Hwasong-18 ICBM that Pyongyang has tested after launches in April and July.

Modern fighter aircraft and air defense systems are the other weapons Pyongyang “desperately” wants, said Gary Samore, former White House coordinator for arms control and weapons of mass destruction during the Obama administration.

Samore said Pyongyang is looking to update its “very antiquated” air defense capabilities “to protect itself against the air superiority advantage” of the US and South Korea.
The arms dealings between North Korea and Russia seem to have solidified after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s visit to Russia, where he met Russian President Vladimir Putin, in September, according to VOA.

Putin appeared to nod to indicate Russia’s willingness to help Kim enhance its satellite technology during the September 13 meeting at the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia’s Amur region.

Kim visited a fighter jet plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur on September 16 and the Knevichi Airbase and the Pacific Fleet in Vladivostok the next day.
But as early as 2022, Pyongyang had been delivering artillery shells to Russia for its war in Ukraine, according to the White House.

In January, the White House released satellite imagery showing North Korea sending shipments of arms to Russia via railcars the previous November.
The White House released another set of satellite images on October 13 showing more than 1,000 containers of military equipment and ammunition leaving from North Korea’s port of Najin.

Evans Revere, acting assistant secretary for East Asia and Pacific Affairs during the George W. Bush administration, said arms deals between Moscow and Pyongyang, which violate sanctions, are a “serious matter.”
He added, “The only question is how substantial and how much of an egregious violation of the UN Security Council resolutions.”

Jeffrey Sillin and David Bernstein, two diplomats, have been designated “persona non grata,” which means they must leave the country within one week.

United States has condemned Russia’s decision stating that Mosco was chosen “confrontation and escalation over constructive diplomatic engagement.”

US Ambassador Lynne Tracy was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry and the US Embassy in Moscow on Thursday, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry and the US Embassy in Moscow. Lynne Tracy was notified that the two diplomats, Jeffrey Sillin and David Bernstein, have been designated “persona non grata,” and must leave the country within a week.

Russia’s decision to expel two diplomats was denounced by US State Department spokeswoman Matt Miller. Russia, according to Miller, has once again chosen “confrontation and escalation over constructive diplomatic engagement.” He also stated that the United States would “respond appropriately” to Russia’s conduct.

While addressing a press briefing on Thursday, Matt Miller said, “This unprovoked expulsion of our diplomatic personnel is wholly without merit, as is the case against a former Russian contractor of our embassy who was arrested for the supposedly nefarious task of performing such activities as providing our embassy with media clips.”

He further said, “Yet again, Russia has chosen confrontation and escalation over constructive diplomatic engagement. It continues to harass employees of our embassy, just as it continues to intimidate its own citizens. We regret that Russia has taken this path, and you can certainly expect that we will respond appropriately to their actions.”

</excerpt>

Us President Joe Biden will take part in the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Hiroshima, Japan from 19–21 May. The third in-person Quad Leaders’ Summit will take place in Sydney, Australia, on 24 May and will be attended by Prime Ministers Kishida Fumio of Japan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia, according to a press release from the White House.

On 19–21 May, US Vice President Joe Biden will take part in the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Hiroshima, Japan. According to the press release, the President and G7 leaders will talk about a variety of urgent global issues, including the G7’s unwavering support for Ukraine, addressing the simultaneous food and climate crises, ensuring inclusive and resilient economic growth, and continuing to lead a clean energy transition both domestically and for our international partners. The third in-person Quad Leaders’ Summit, which is being hosted by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and will be attended by President Biden, Prime Minister Kishida Fumio of Japan, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, will take place in Sydney, Australia, on May 24. The leaders of the Quad will talk about ways to strengthen their collaboration on crucial and emerging technologies, top-notch infrastructure, global health, climate change, maritime domain awareness, and other issues important to Indo-Pacific citizens.

The Quad Leaders’ Summit will take place in Sydney, Australia, on May 24, according to a tweet from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese earlier on Wednesday.
Anthony Albanese tweeted, “I’m happy to announce that Australia will host the Quad Leaders’ Summit for the first time on May 24 in Sydney.
In May, Prime Minister Modi will visit Australia to attend the Quad leadership meeting.
In March, during the latter’s four-day visit to India, Prime Minister Modi and his Australian counterpart had a joint press conference at which they announced the announcement.

Australia and India are both Quad members. I appreciate PM Albanese’s invitation to visit Australia in May for the Quad Leaders’ Summit. For the G20 conference in September, I have invited him to India,” PM Modi had earlier stated.
The leaders of the Quad group will next gather in Australia after previously meeting four times. Due to its strong interest in sustainable and equitable economic growth and growing ties between Quad members and non-Quad members, the group’s significance in the area has grown.

India, Japan, the United States, and Australia are all members of the Quad, a strategic forum. Its main goal is to create a new plan of action to maintain the independence of the vital marine lanes in the Indo-Pacific.
