The strike followed sharp comments by Donald Trump on Putin and renewed U.S. arms promises to Kyiv.
</excerpt>

In a sharp escalation of its conflict with Ukraine, Russia conducted its biggest aerial attack so far on the night of July 8-9, targeting sites all over the country with 741 drones and missiles. The huge attack came after a critical statement by former US President Donald Trump against Vladimir Putin and after Washington reaffirmed its commitment to supply defensive weapons to Ukraine.

Russian forces, as per Ukraine’s military, struck significant infrastructure in 10 areas, overwhelmingly targeting the Volyn area, including airbases and production facilities around Lutsk. Though large in scope, Ukraine claimed to have intercepted and defeated 718 of the 741 airborne threats using a mix of air defence systems, electronic warfare, interceptor drones, mobile fire units, and fighter aircraft.

Trump’s Criticism Followed by Airstrikes by Russia

The attack’s timing seemed to be a direct reaction to Donald Trump’s last statements. Trump earlier on Tuesday attacked Putin, stating, “We get a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin, if you want to know the truth. He’s very nice to us all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless.”

🔴 Russian forces have launched one of the most massive attacks on Ukraine to date tonight, with Lutsk and Zhytomyr being the primary targets.

Preliminarily, the assault involved:
– 540 to 620 Shahed drones or decoy drones
– 6 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles
– 4 Kh-101 missiles. pic.twitter.com/E7KKL8Ljdh

— UNITED24 Media (@United24media) July 9, 2025

Trump also stated that Putin was “not treating human beings right” and justified US military support for Ukraine, saying, “he’s killing too many people, so we’re sending some defensive weapons to Ukraine.”

Hours later, Russia unleashed the massive aerial bombardment, which Ukrainian officials described as a retaliatory show of force.

Ukraine’s Resilient Defence

Ukraine’s defense forces destroyed 296 drones and jammed 415 others. Ukraine reported that it defused all seven cruise missiles involved in the attack. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Chief of Staff, Andriy Yermak, posted, “It is rather indicative that Russia conducted the attack precisely when the United States officially stated that it would be providing us with weapons.”

It was the second record-breaking air attack in under a week. Only days before, Russia had fired 550 drones and missiles after Putin and Trump held a phone call.

Putin Pushes Offensive Amid Trump’s Inaction

Even while verbally attacking Trump, however, critics observe that he has not yet taken effective action against Putin. His administration suspended military assistance to Ukraine, and recent developments indicate that Putin has become more assertive, emboldened by the absence of tangible sanctions.

Russia said its recent long-range “precision strikes” targeted military sites, including airports, and asserted all of the objectives were destroyed.

In the meantime, Russian troops claimed to have captured the village of Tolstoy in eastern Donetsk on Wednesday, ratcheting up the pressure on Ukraine’s eastern flank.

Zelenskyy Calls for Sanctions on Russian Oil

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced the attack and called for stronger sanctions against Russian oil exports, which he accused of financing Moscow’s war effort.

“Secondary sanctions on those who purchase this oil and thus sponsor murders… Everyone who desires peace must act,” Zelenskyy said.

He noted that the barrage was evidence of “Russia continues to rebuff” all attempts at peace.

There were reports of damage in many areas, including Dnipro, Kyiv, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv, as the extent of the attack nationwide came to light.

</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump attacked Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, denouncing his ongoing aggression in Ukraine and threatening possible US action that would be “a little surprise.”

Addressing a cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump denounced Putin’s overtures of peace as insincere, referring to them as “meaningless.” “We see a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin,” he said, suggesting that Russia’s public cordiality conceals increasing conflict on the ground.

Trump also expressed serious consideration of new Senate-backed sanctions on Russia, emphasizing growing concern over the rising death toll. “I’m not happy with Putin… he’s killing a lot of people his soldiers and theirs. It’s now up to 7,000 a week,” he said.

Overturning an earlier move to suspend arms shipments, Trump asserted the US will be shipping additional defensive weapons to Ukraine, including 10 Patriot missile systems. “The Ukrainians were courageous, but we supplied them with the greatest gear ever manufactured,” he said, attributing US assistance to Ukraine’s toughness.

Trump ordered Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to speed up weapons manufacturing and called on contractors to increase production.

Also, Trump spoke about economic policy, stating that he would not postpone higher tariffs scheduled to go into effect August 1 on scores of countries. Although he earlier this week threatened flexibility, now he insists the increases will go forward as planned. “No extensions will be given,” he tweeted on Truth Social. “There will be no adjustment.”

Trump’s aggressive approach to Russia and trade comes as tensions build at home and abroad and on the heels of his bombastic remarks on the Israel-Iran conflict. Moscow has yet to react to Trump’s most recent comments.

Putin to Trump: “Russia Will Not Give Up on Its Aims in Ukraine”

<excerpt>Putin tells Trump in a one-hour call that “Russia will not give up on its aims in Ukraine,” signaling no end to the war anytime soon.
</excerpt>

Russian President Vladimir Putin informed US President Donald Trump that Moscow would not “give up” on its goals in Ukraine but was willing to keep negotiating, the Kremlin stated on Thursday after a call between the two presidents.

“Our president said that Russia will achieve the aims it set, that is to say the root causes that led to the current state of affairs,” Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters. “Russia will not give up on these aims,” he added.

“He also spoke of the readiness of the Russian side to continue the negotiation process,” Ushakov said, adding that the call lasted almost an hour.

Putin Also Stresses Diplomacy in the Middle East

Putin also emphasized diplomacy in ending tensions in Iran and the wider Middle East.

The calls follow the Trump administration earlier this week suspending the shipment of artillery rounds and air defence systems to Ukraine, a step that has been said to have surprised Kyiv and allies in a surprise move. The decision by the US came in the wake of a record Russian airstrike on Ukraine as the war enters its fourth year.

White House Cites Munition Shortages

The White House said that the freezing of weapons shipments came after a review of US stocks of munitions, but its doing so was being driven by fears that levels had dropped too low.

Some of those suspended supplies include Patriot air defence systems and 155mm artillery ammunition, but both are deemed essential to Ukraine’s attempts to repel Russian drone and missile strikes.

Trump’s Peace Push Fails to Gain Traction as Putin Holds Firm

President Trump came into office vowing an end to the war in Ukraine quickly, but his efforts have gone nowhere. Russian President Vladimir Putin ignored calls to stop fighting and snubbed requests for a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Though lower-level negotiations between the two nations have resulted in prisoner exchanges, they have not yielded an overall solution to the war.

</excerpt>

Vladimir Putin is not flying to Brazil for next month’s BRICS summit because of the outstanding International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against the Russian president, the Kremlin stated on Wednesday.

ICC Wants Putin Over Ukraine Deportations

Putin is wanted by the Hague-based ICC for reportedly illegally deporting Ukrainian children since he sent his troops into Ukraine in 2022.

“This is due to certain difficulties in the context of the ICC’s requirements,” he added.

Kremlin assistant Yuri Ushakov said in a briefing with reporters that Putin would attend the July 6-7 BRICS leaders’ summit in Rio de Janeiro through a video link.

Putin Continues to Praise BRICS as Counterweight to the West

Putin regularly praises the BRICS club as a force to check what he criticizes as Western hegemony on the international stage.

Loose association of nations called after initial members Brazil, Russia, India and China, its members commit to increasing trade and cooperation, although it is not a trade agreement and has minimal institutional links.

Brazil’s ICC Membership a Barrier to Putin’s Visit

Brazil is a signatory to the ICC and would thus be bound to implement the arrest warrant on Putin, if he had attended the summit.

The Kremlin leader took a VIP visit to Mongolia last year, defying the warrant to arrest him his first visit to an ICC member state since the Hague court issued the arrest warrant in 2023. The court and the European Union criticized Ulaanbaatar for allowing Putin to make the trip there.

Russia mocks Trump over Nobel Peace Prize after US airstrikes.
</excerpt>

Operation Midnight Hammer has triggered global reactions after the US had launched airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites. Ukraine backed the strikes and even called Iran’s nuclear program a global threat and condemning its support for Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russia has mocked the US President Donald Trump, dismissing his hopes for a Nobel Peace Prize.

Ukraine Supports Operation Midnight Hammer

Ukraine’s foreign ministry publicly supported the recent US airstrikes on Iran, which targeted three nuclear sites under the code name Operation Midnight Hammer. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha echoed President Trump’s firm stance, stating, “Ukraine is convinced that Iran’s nuclear program must be brought to an end so that it never again poses a threat neither to the countries of the Middle East nor to any other state.”

The statement emphasised that years of peaceful efforts to stop Iran’s nuclear ambitions have failed and justified the US strikes. Ukraine also accused Iran of fueling Russia’s war against Ukraine by supplying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and military technology. The foreign ministry declared, “Iran is complicit in the crime of aggression against Ukraine.

The Iranian regime is providing military assistance to Russia, including the supply of UAVs and technologies that Russia consistently uses to kill people and destroy critical infrastructure.” These accusations underline Ukraine’s support for stronger measures against Iran’s activities.

Russia Mocks Trump Over Nobel Prize

While Ukraine sided with the US, Russia ridiculed Trump after the strikes. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev mocked Trump’s aspirations for the Nobel Peace Prize. On X (formerly Twitter), Medvedev wrote, “At this rate, Trump can forget about the Nobel Peace Prize, not even with how rigged it has become. What a way to kick things off, Mr President.”

US Vice President JD Vance dismissed Medvedev’s remarks, calling them bizarre. He said, “I don’t know that guy speaks for President Putin or for the Russian government.” Vance also clarified Russia’s position, adding, “[Russia has] been very consistent that they don’t want Iran to get a nuclear weapon.”

He concluded that only President Vladimir Putin can state Russia’s official stance on Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

</excerpt>

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday voiced deep concern at the growing threat of global war, admitting fears that the world could be on the path to a third world war.

Addressing the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin explained that the likelihood of conflict across the globe was increasing, mentioning multiple active hotspots that had the potential to increase tensions.

“There is much conflict potential, and it’s increasing,” said Putin, further commenting, “This is not joke or irony it’s a serious matter unfolding before our very eyes and directly impacting Russia.”

He cited the war raging in Ukraine, the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran, and the combustible situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear plants where Russian technicians are busily engaged in building two nuclear reactors as sources of concern.

Putin emphasized the use of active diplomacy and peaceful solutions to avoid escalation. “These events require not only our close attention but also an effort aimed at finding peaceful ways out on all fronts,” he said.

His comments come at a time of increased global instability and concern about a wider international crisis between nuclear-capable nations.

Putin’s statement underscores the precarious nature of international relations today and the imperative need for international cooperation.

Trump agreed the situation was alarming and reiterated hopes for conflict resolution.
</excerpt>

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone for 50 minutes with US President Donald Trump on Saturday and strongly condemned Israel’s recent attacks against Iran, warning of the danger of dangerous escalation in West Asia, a Kremlin statement said.

Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov stated, “President Putin denounced Israel’s military strike against Iran and voiced serious concern over the risk of a runaway escalation of the conflict in the region.”

He also noted that Trump viewed the Middle East situation as “very alarming.” As tensions mounted, both leaders agreed, however, that resuming talks on Iran’s nuclear program was still on the table.

On the war in Ukraine, Putin told Trump that Moscow was ready to return to negotiations with Kyiv after June 22, according to reports. Trump also reaffirmed that he wanted a swift end to the conflict, Ushakov said. Putin also wished Trump a happy birthday, as Trump is 79 years old today.

Tensions between Iran and Israel escalated further as both nations engaged in military exchanges. Israel made unprecedented air attacks against Iran on Friday, striking at military and nuclear sites and killing dozens, including top Revolutionary Guards commanders and civilians.

Iran returned fire overnight with waves of missiles and drones aimed at Israeli territory.

In retaliation, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian served a warning, threatening harsher retribution if Israel continues its airstrikes. “The aggression of the Zionist regime will be responded to with a tougher and more severe measure,” he stated.

He also denounced the United States for what he described as “dishonest” diplomacy backing Israeli military strikes while at the same time negotiating a nuclear deal with Tehran. Oman, as a mediator, went on to announce that a scheduled sixth round of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks scheduled for Sunday had been called off.

</excerpt>

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday that he is willing to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin for peace negotiations in Istanbul on Thursday.

The move came after pressure from US President Donald Trump, who pressed Zelenskyy to accept Russia’s invitation for direct talks. A major US foreign policy shift could follow.
</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump will be deciding soon if he should keep urging an end to the Ukraine-Russia war or move on to other top agendas. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the imminent decision, noting Trump’s increasing frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

While Trump has heaped pressure on Ukraine, Russia’s persistent refusal to accept ceasefire proposals is the largest hurdle. In the days ahead, Trump’s decision may redefine US foreign policy.

Trump Increasing Irritation with Zelenskyy and Putin

In the last week, Trump attacked Zelenskyy for refusing a US proposal for a ceasefire that would have acknowledged Russian dominance over five Ukrainian provinces.
He also showed quiet discontent with Putin, questioning whether the Russian president is stalling negotiations just to prevent an actual settlement.

Following his encounter with Zelenskyy at Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome, Trump tweeted that Putin may not even want to end the war. He threatened more aggressive action, proposing new “banking” sanctions and “secondary sanctions” to pressure Russia into action.

Rubio Signals a Possible Shift in Focus

Rubio emphasized that Trump will make a last-minute decision in days. He mentioned that despite some progress being achieved, the toughest steps still lie ahead. “We’re close, but we’re not close enough,” Rubio added.

He warned that the administration won’t continue pouring in time and money if a breakthrough remains elusive.

Earlier this month, Rubio already indicated the administration would then move on if peace talks don’t deliver immediate results.

Russia Keeps Thwarting Peace Efforts

While Trump has pressured Ukraine a lot, Russia has continually thwarted ceasefire initiatives. Last week, Ukraine signed onto a 30-day US-sponsored ceasefire agreement.
Russia followed up by introducing new conditions that rendered the agreement impossible.

Moscow also did not implement a ceasefire to defend Ukraine’s energy infrastructure despite Kyiv’s speedy acceptance of it. In another rebuff, Russia spurned a US-facilitated Black Sea security deal, calling for the removal of sanctions and unfettered access to the SWIFT payment system.

Every rebuff makes one point clear: Russia, not Ukraine, is the primary stumbling block to a peace deal.

Trump Urges Expedited Bargain

Even with the rebuffs, Trump is looking for a rapid settlement. On Sunday, he expressed hope that Ukraine and Russia might agree “in two weeks or less.

But with Russia stonewalling and negotiations at a standstill, prospects for peace look dim. Unless an agreement is reached soon, Trump and his people appear set to channel their energy elsewhere.

</excerpt>

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq al-Said of Oman on Tuesday to discuss Iran’s nuclear programme and the stalled talks between Washington and Tehran. The encounter at the Kremlin highlights Oman’s status as a middleman for the US and Iran.

The talks are also at a sensitive time as the Trump administration is taking a hard line in pushing for an agreement to limit Iran’s nuclear program, which Washington says is intended to build nuclear weapons one that Iran denies. The Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov said the discussion was about the course of negotiations between Iranian and American officials. “We keep in close touch with our Iranian partners, and we assist wherever possible,” Ushakov quoted Putin.

President Trump has threatened the use of force against Iran if there is no agreement, a step which Russia has vigorously opposed. Russia, which signed the 2015 nuclear pact with Iran, insists that any US military intervention would be illegal. Moscow has also been engaged in efforts to strengthen its ties with Tehran and Washington amid escalating tensions.

In the meeting, Putin also said that Russia wants to develop energy ties with Oman. The meeting was focused on Russia’s strategic engagement in the Middle East region, with the meeting being the second in under a week by Putin with a regional leader. The visit was after a visit with the Emir of Qatar on April 17, and Iran’s foreign minister had been in Russia a week ago as well.

While diplomatic efforts are ongoing, the fate of the Iran-US talks is still uncertain with Russia as the facilitator of the talks.

However, he cautioned Russian troops to stay alert for potential provocations or ceasefire breaches during the halt.
</excerpt>

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a 30-hour Easter ceasefire in the current conflict with Ukraine, urging Kyiv to return the gesture in goodwill. The ceasefire will commence at 6:00 p.m. local time (1500 GMT) on Saturday, April 19, and run until midnight Sunday (2100 GMT).

Today from 1800 until midnight Sunday, the Russian side declares an Easter truce,” Putin stated in a televised meeting with General Staff Head Valery Gerasimov. He underlined the temporary character of the truce and the necessity to both sides to keep it respectfully.

As he made a call for mutual observance of the ceasefire, Putin also ordered Russian troops to stay alert. “Our troops need to be prepared to react to any provocation or violations by the enemy,” he warned, implying potential disturbances in the truce.

The step comes after an American initiative allegedly put before European leaders while Secretary of State Marco Rubio was visiting Paris last week, with an emphasis on reducing the war in progress.

In spite of the announcement of the ceasefire, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cautioned that Russia could utilize the Easter holiday to carry out or prepare additional military attacks. “We know what Russia is getting ready for,” Zelenskyy wrote Thursday, adding that “new Russian attacks are possible before, during, and after Easter.”

The Easter ceasefire is being seen with guarded optimism but skepticism is still high considering previous ceasefire breaches and ongoing fighting. The international community has urged both sides to keep the spirit of Easter alive by suspending violence and allowing humanitarian relief and efforts at peace-making to begin anew.

With the window of ceasefire drawing near, everyone is watching the frontlines to determine if this temporary lull in hostilities will last or be tainted by ongoing violence.

</excerpt>

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei sent Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi to Moscow on Thursday bearing a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin as tensions between Tehran’s nuclear programme and fresh threats by the United States rose.

The diplomatic gesture follows recent negotiations between Iran and the US in Oman that both sides hailed as constructive. President Donald Trump, however, has continued issuing threats, such as bombing Iran and imposing sanctions on third-party nations buying Iranian oil unless Iran signs a nuclear deal. The US has also added more warplanes to the area.

Araqchi said his trip to Moscow was to update Russian authorities on the nuclear negotiations. In an interview with Iranian state media, he reiterated Iran’s years-long coordination with its friends such as China and Russia on nuclear affairs. “It’s a good time to keep having these consultations with our Russian friends,” he said.

Putin received Araqchi at the Kremlin after the letter was delivered. While the contents of Khamenei’s letter remain undisclosed, it reportedly addressed both regional developments and bilateral cooperation.

Western nations accuse Iran of enriching uranium beyond civilian needs, approaching levels suitable for nuclear weapons. Iran denies these allegations, maintaining that its program is peaceful and legally protected.

Russia, Iran’s prime ally, has traditionally supported Tehran’s nuclear objectives under global compacts and, more recently, signed a 20-year strategic cooperation agreement with Iran, leaving out mutual defense. In alignment with Iran in Syria and in military transactions, Moscow is, however, still cautious about fanning nuclear tensions in the Middle East.

Though Putin has a conciliatory relationship with Khamenei, the Kremlin has been insistent that any military intervention against Iran would be unacceptable. When asked whether Russia would monitor Iran’s enriched uranium supplies as part of a proposed agreement, Kremlin officials refused to comment.

He claimed a strong relationship with Putin but demanded swift action.
</excerpt>

It has been warned by former US President Donald Trump that he would impose secondary tariffs of between 25% and 50% on all Russian oil if he feels that Moscow is hindering efforts to bring a close to the war in Ukraine. Interviewed by NBC News on Sunday, Trump told that the tariffs may become active within one month if the ceasefire does not happen.

Embracing his displeasure, Trump stated that he was “pissed off” when the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, doubted the veracity of the leadership of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He also clarified intentions to address Putin within a week.

During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly vowed to close what he refers to as a “ridiculous” war in Ukraine. Since the start of his term on January 20, he has ramped up his attention on the war. He has also called for fresh elections in Ukraine, even inaccurately referring to Zelenskyy as a dictator.

Putin, in a Friday statement, proposed Ukraine be put under temporary administration to allow for elections and the signing of major agreements, which could see Zelenskyy ousted from office.

If Russia and I can’t come to an agreement to end the bloodshed, and if I think Russia is responsible, I will impose secondary tariffs on all Russian oil,” Trump said. He explained that any nation buying Russian oil would be excluded from doing business in the US and would be charged tariffs of 25% to 50%.

Trump went on to say that Putin knows how frustrated he is but said, “I have a very good relationship with him, and the anger dissipates quickly if he does the right thing.”

</excerpt>

Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed putting Ukraine under temporary rule in order to make way for new elections. Speaking in Murmansk, Putin asserted that his new friend, U.S. President Donald Trump, is serious about bringing the Russia-Ukraine war to an end, Reuters said. Regardless of ceasefire talks that are continuing, Putin said Russia continues to be successful in meeting its strategic goals in the war.

Putin Challenges Zelenskyy’s Legitimacy

Putin’s offer is consistent with his long-standing assertion that Ukraine’s government is not a legitimate negotiating partner. He noted that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has overstayed in office past the constitutional deadline for elections, which expired on May 24, 2024.

But Ukrainian officials contend that elections are impossible under martial law, which has been in place since the war started three years ago. In reply, the Ukrainian parliament adopted a resolution in February reaffirming Zelenskyy’s legitimacy, pointing to his robust domestic support.

A Government Under Western Oversight?

Speaking to seamen in the Russian port on Friday, Putin proposed having a temporary administration in Ukraine under international control. He said that the United Nations, the United States, and European countries take charge of running the country.

“In principle, naturally, there could be a temporary administration implemented in Ukraine with the UN auspices, the United States, European states and our partners,” Putin said.

He also compared Trump’s blunt approach to peace negotiations with Russia with that of his predecessor, Joe Biden, citing that Trump’s openness indicates sincerity to end the war.

Russia Sticks to Its Goals

In spite of peace talk, Putin insisted that Russia is making progress in its military objectives. “Along the entire line of military contact, our forces are retaining the strategic initiative,” he declared. He also reiterated that Russia is looking for peaceful options but not on its own terms.

Putin ended by saying that he is willing to work with any country, including North Korea, to end the war.

</excerpt>

Introduction: A Foregone Conclusion with Global Implications

Vladimir Putin is going to continue his presidency following the 2024 Russian election, further entrenching his leadership that started in 2000. With tight media control, opposition suppression, and highly orchestrated political management, there is little mystery about what will happen. But the question is not so much who is going to emerge victorious, but what this implies for Russia and the world particularly in the context of the Ukraine war, relations with the West, and the future of the country’s economy.

A Managed Election: An Illusion of Choice

While Russia conducts elections, its politics has no authentic competition:

Leaded opposition players are in prison, in exile, or otherwise silenced.

Putin’s message monopolizes the government-controlled media.

Dissenters are cracked down on brutally, limiting public protest.

Putin, even with financial woes due to Western sanctions and a long, grinding war, remains highly supported by Russians perceiving him as a bulwark against pressure from the West.

Ukraine War: No Signs of De-Escalation

Putin’s re-election means a sustained hardline policy toward Ukraine. While some Western negotiators have proposed ceasefire negotiations, Putin made it unmistakably clear that:

Russia will not leave occupied Ukrainian territory.

The war effort will go on, with greater military mobilization if needed.

Western support for Ukraine will be met with military and economic coercion.

Russia’s policy is to utilize energy exports, cyber attacks, and diplomacy to reduce Western will and ratchet up military actions wherever feasible.

Western Relations: Heavy Sanctions or a New Cold War?

The West has slammed Russia with crushing sanctions, yet Putin’s versatility has sustained the nation’s economy. His second term might witness:

more clashes with NATO, with Sweden and Finland joining the fold.

broadened sanctions against Russia’s last remaining avenues of trade.

Greater hybrid war, such as cyberattacks, interference in elections, and disinformation campaigns.

Though diplomatic efforts remain improbable, certain European countries might seek limited talks to contain tensions.

Russia’s Global Strategy: Strengthening Relations with China, Iran, and BRICS

While its relations with the West worsen, Russia is redirecting its attention towards the east:

China has emerged as an indispensable economic ally, assisting Russia in evading sanctions.

Iran is providing military hardware, solidifying their strategic partnership.

BRICS nations (India, South Africa, Brazil) are increasing economic partnerships, presenting a counterpoint to Western economies.

Putin wants to create a multipolar order with Russia no longer reliant on the West, through increased economic and military alliances outside of conventional Western spheres of influence.

Challenges at Home: War Fatigue and Financial Pressure

As solid as Putin’s grip is over Russia, there are mounting issues at home:

Economic strain as a result of extensive sanctions and warfare expenditures.

Military exhaustion, with more Russians being drafted as casualties mount.

Increased exodus of qualified specialists, diluting Russia’s future talent pool.

While Putin’s regime crushes opposition, domestic pressure may build, particularly if the war stagnates with no end in sight.

Conclusion: A Stronger Putin, A More Divided World

Putin’s second term solidifies his grip on Russia but also guarantees sustained conflict with the West, longer conflict in Ukraine, and closer alignment with China and other non-Western nations.

The international order is being reordered, and with Putin’s Russia committed to disrupting Western hegemony, the world needs to be ready for a more complicated and possibly explosive geopolitical future in the next few years.

With elections nearing, Babis leads in polls, while Fiala’s coalition faces internal strife.
</excerpt>

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has denounced opposition leader Andrej Babis of having indirectly backed Russian President Vladimir Putin during the conflict in Ukraine. His comments arrive as Babis, chief of the populists ANO party, looks set to come out on top in the country’s next parliament elections.

Fiala, whose coalition government has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine, accused Babis of siding with Moscow’s interests on defense spending and military assistance. Speaking in an interview to the Financial Times, he attacked Babis for vetoing a Czech-led effort to buy ammunition for Ukraine from international donations.

Babis opposes this ammunition project, opposes defense spending, and talks about peace without conditions,” Fiala said. “He assists Vladimir Putin it’s absolutely clear.”

The Czech-led ammunition project, which collects donations from allied countries to purchase ammunition for Ukraine, might be threatened if Babis comes to power, Fiala cautioned.

Recent surveys suggest that Babis has a strong lead with 33% of voter backing, while Fiala’s coalition is lagging at around 17%. Babis has been moving in the direction of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, both of whom are in favor of diplomatic talks rather than military assistance to Ukraine. But Kyiv is hesitant, claiming that Moscow does not have genuine intent for peace talks.

The Czech Republic will conduct parliamentary elections no later than October 2025, with the total of 200 seats in the Chamber of Deputies up for election. </excerpt>

n a recent phone call with Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin furthered his strategic ambitions, edging closer to repairing Russia’s relations with the U.S. while driving a wedge between Washington and Europe. However, analysts note that he offered minimal concessions regarding Trump’s efforts to broker peace in Ukraine.
Ahead of the Tuesday conversation, the U.S. had proposed a 30-day ceasefire as a preliminary step toward a broader peace agreement, with Ukraine in principle agreeing to the plan. Instead, Putin consented only to a narrow ceasefire focusing solely on halting attacks on energy infrastructure for a month.
Though the White House hailed the agreement as a significant step forward, marking the first time in over three years of conflict that both sides agreed to scale back hostilities, it remains limited. The ceasefire applies only to energy strikes and extends to the Black Sea, where discussions on a maritime ceasefire will also proceed. These measures would curtail Ukraine’s ability to target Russia’s oil infrastructure, a crucial funding source for the war, as well as constrain its naval operations.
Despite this, Russia continues its military offensive on land, particularly in the western Kursk region, where it is pushing to expel Ukrainian forces that had seized Russian territory during a surprise incursion last August. Putin reiterated Russia’s conditions for a broader ceasefire, stipulating that it must not allow Ukraine to resupply its military or mobilize additional forces. Ukraine has firmly rejected these terms.
Nigel Gould-Davies, a Russia expert at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, argued that Putin’s agreement to a limited ceasefire effectively undermines the prospect of a wider truce. “It’s a ‘no’ by another name,” he said, noting that Putin has laid down conditions that Ukraine and the U.S. are unlikely to accept.
Despite this, Trump’s aides framed the phone call as a success, viewing it as an essential step toward a potential ceasefire. “Until recently, we didn’t have consensus on these two aspects—the energy and infrastructure ceasefire and the Black Sea moratorium,” said Steve Witkoff, Trump’s envoy. “Today, we got to that place, and I think we’re not far from a full ceasefire.”
However, Andrei Kozyrev, a former Russian foreign minister and pro-Western figure, dismissed Trump’s success, stating that Putin had nothing to give. “Putin is determined to keep the war going, and Trump is being led along,” he said.
While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed readiness to support a moratorium on energy strikes, both sides quickly accused each other of resuming attacks. Even if a limited ceasefire holds, analysts caution that it would not represent a meaningful concession by Putin. Halting strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid would offer Russia relief from damaging drone attacks targeting its oil refineries, which have significantly undermined its refining capacity.
Kozyrev suggested that the ceasefire’s vague terms amounted to little more than a strategic maneuver by Putin to maintain leverage. “This selective ceasefire is far from what Trump had demanded—a comprehensive halt to hostilities,” he said.
The Kremlin’s official readout of the call highlighted that the two leaders agreed to continue bilateral efforts to end the war, a diplomatic approach that has raised concerns among Ukraine and its European allies. They fear that Trump may seek a deal with Putin that excludes them, leaving them vulnerable in the long term.
Putin’s goal appears to be to elevate Russia to an equal footing with the U.S. in global diplomacy, seeking to reverse years of isolation and sanctions. Political analyst Tatiana Stanovaya noted that the Russian president is working to sideline the Ukrainian conflict from direct U.S.-Russia relations, furthering his broader diplomatic agenda.
Gould-Davies added that Putin is using this engagement with the U.S. to drive a wedge between Washington and its NATO allies, potentially forcing Europe to act alone to strengthen its own defenses while attempting to limit the decoupling from the U.S.
In sum, while Putin’s calculated moves continue to chip away at U.S.-European unity, his offers toward Trump remain cautiously limited and strategically self-serving.

Russia demands Ukraine halt military mobilization, while talks for a wider truce continue in West Asia.
</excerpt>

In a major diplomatic gesture, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump on Tuesday agreed to a 30-day ceasefire from strikes on energy and infrastructure targets in Ukraine, with wider ceasefire talks to start right away, the White House said.

“These talks will get under way without delay in West Asia,” the White House said in a statement highlighting the potential economic and geopolitical rewards if relations between the US and Russia improve.

If implemented, the agreement would be a significant de-escalation of the three-year conflict. Although the Kremlin did not indicate a Ukrainian response, it agreed to Trump’s suggestion of a “mutual refusal” to strike energy infrastructure.

The agreement does not meet the all-encompassing 30-day truce the US had insisted upon and Ukraine had accepted.

“During the call, Donald Trump suggested that both parties to the conflict agree to refrain from strikes on energy facilities for 30 days. Vladimir Putin appreciated the proposal and immediately ordered the Russian military to abide by it,” the Kremlin said.

On the wider ceasefire initiative, Putin repeated previous concerns, underlining conditions for its enforcement. Russia, the Kremlin said, stressed the importance of close monitoring of a possible ceasefire on the front lines, a stop to forced mobilization in Ukraine, and an end to the rearmament of the country.

The deal represents a possible diplomatic breakthrough in de-escalating tensions, although the major issues are still open. It is uncertain how Ukraine will react and whether this temporary ceasefire might bring about a fuller peace deal.

Trump expects a “positive” discussion, and the Kremlin signals cautious optimism about a potential deal.
</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will discuss matters this week, officials confirmed on Sunday. The planned talks come as Washington and Kyiv’s European allies pressure Moscow to sign a ceasefire in the three-year war.

United States has recently tabled a temporary halt in hostilities after talks in Saudi Arabia, to which Ukraine agreed. Moscow has not yet given a clear response, though, presenting instead a set of conditions and expressing grave reservations on the ceasefire proposal.

“I expect there will be a call between both presidents this week, and we’re also continuing to engage in discussions with the Ukrainians,” US envoy Steve Witkoff told CNN on Sunday. Witkoff, who met with Putin in Moscow last Thursday, expressed optimism about the upcoming talks, describing them as “really good and positive.”

At the same time, the Russian government said that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov discussed the implementation of deals reached at a US-Russia summit in Saudi Arabia last month.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on the other hand, blamed Moscow for extending the war to gain a better position on the battlefield before negotiating a truce.

The Riyadh talks in February were the highest-level US-Russia interaction since the war broke out in February 2022. Trump said on Friday that there was a “very good chance” the war could be over, saying he had asked Putin to leave the Ukrainian forces being driven out of Kursk.

Putin replied he would honor Trump’s appeal if the Ukrainian troops lay down arms. Putin went on to send Trump a message through Witkoff later, reaffirming he was “cautiously optimistic” about finalizing a ceasefire agreement.

He emphasized the need for a secure and lasting peace. Putin responds to Trump’s request, offering safety to Ukrainian troops if they surrender.
</excerpt>

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was vocal in a virtual gathering with some 25 global leaders on the Ukraine-Russia ceasefire agreement. He told the leaders that they should be willing to protect any peace agreement with their own hands and continue pressurizing Russian President Vladimir Putin to sign a ceasefire.

“My sense is that at some point, eventually, he [Vladimir Putin] is going to have to sit down and have some serious conversation,” Starmer added. “But, and this is a large but for us this morning during our meeting, we can’t just sit around and wait for that to occur. We have to continue to push forward, push ahead, and prepare for peace and a peace that will be secure and that will endure.”

He added on further, “If [Russian President Vladimir] Putin is being genuine about wanting peace, then it’s straightforward, he has to desist from his violent assault on Ukraine and accede to a ceasefire.” Starmer insisted that an effort needed to be made towards continued pushing of peace and durable resolution.

In turn, Vladimir Putin reacted to a “request” from US President Donald Trump, on the security of Ukrainian soldiers withdrawing from Russia’s Kursk region. Putin made it clear that Moscow would only ensure their safety if they “surrender.” Putin urged Ukrainian President Zelensky to instruct his soldiers to drop their arms, saying, “We are sympathetic to President Trump’s call. If they lay down their arms and surrender, they will be guaranteed life and dignified treatment.”

Putin agreed but insisted on unconditional surrender. Kyiv denied encirclement, while US officials signaled ongoing diplomatic discussions.
</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump on Friday called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to save the Ukrainian troops trapped by Russian forces in the Kursk province, a call Putin indicated he would give serious consideration to provided it included surrender.

Trump issued the appeal on Twitter after a senior-level meeting in Moscow on Thursday evening between his representative, Steve Witkoff, and Putin. “The discussions were very good and productive,” Trump said, hinting at hope for the cessation of the war.

“There is a very good possibility that this nasty, bloody war can finally end,” Trump stated, referring to an American-backed ceasefire proposal which Ukraine has already signed and Russia is considering. He went on to say that thousands of Ukrainian soldiers in Kursk were “totally surrounded” and in a terrible predicament.

“I have asked very strongly to President Putin that their lives be spared. It would be a terrible massacre, one that would be like World War II,” Trump said.

Though military experts verify that Ukrainian troops in Kursk are in a vulnerable situation, Kyiv’s army maintains there is no danger of encirclement and troops are redeploying tactically.

Putin accused Ukrainian troops of committing atrocities against civilians in Kursk charges denied by Kyiv but accepted Trump’s call for humanitarian treatment. He said that troops who surrendered would be given life and a fair trial under Russian and international law. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev cautioned, however, that those who do not surrender will be “methodically and mercilessly destroyed.”

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, addressing a G7 summit in Canada, assured that the talks regarding Ukraine’s plight would go on during the weekend as Witkoff comes back from Moscow.

Ukraine denies claims of encirclement, while ceasefire talks remain uncertain despite diplomatic efforts from Trump’s envoy.
</excerpt>

In a highly unusual public appeal, US President Donald Trump called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to spare the lives of Ukrainian troops reportedly surrounded in Russia’s Kursk region.

Trump made his appeal during Moscow’s continuing push in Kursk, with the aim of recapturing areas Ukraine took last year. Russian troops claim to have reclaimed 86% of the territory lost, including the strategic town of Sudzha.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump stated, “Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are at this moment surrounded by the Russian army and in a very bad and compromised position. I have personally asked President Putin to save their lives. This will be a terrible massacre, one that has not occurred since World War II. God bless them all!”

His call is concurrent with debate regarding a reported 30-day ceasefire, which has been endorsed by the US and Ukraine. Putin has accepted that there could be a truce but has specified tough terms for it, including the capitulation of Ukrainian troops in Kursk.

Trump’s comments have elicited doubt from Ukraine’s military and independent analysts, who argue against reports of Ukrainian troops being surrounded. In a statement on X, Ukraine’s General Staff rejected these reports as Russian propaganda, noting that their forces had tactically repositioned and remained resisting Russian advances.

In the meanwhile, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has sat down to meet with Putin on Thursday for talks. Although there have been continuous aggressions by Russia and backing of North Korean soldiers, Trump remained hopeful, saying that “there is a very good chance that this horrible, bloody war can finally come to an end.”

Trump’s alignment with Russia’s spin is in keeping with his track record of believing Putin ahead of American intelligence. With ceasefire negotiations ongoing, Putin has indicated he will only settle for capitulation, discounting any Ukrainian withdrawal from Kursk.

He warned that rejecting peace would be disappointing for the world, as negotiations continue.
</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump on Thursday termed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statements on Ukraine and the US-proposed ceasefire as “promising” but short of full commitment.

Speaking at the Oval Office during a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump expressed cautious optimism while urging Russia to support the proposed truce.

“Precisely what Putin has released is a very encouraging statement, but it wasn’t finished,” Trump stated, according to Reuters. “We hope Russia will do the right thing.”

Trump reiterated that earnest talks were going on between the US, Russia, and other important players. However, he added that diplomatic processes were still in the making.

We’re receiving words that everything is fine in Russia, but that’s not going to mean anything until we hear the ultimate result,” Trump said. “Hopefully, they all want to terminate this nightmare.”

The US president also cautioned that a rejection of the peace agreement by Moscow would be a reverse for international stability.

“A lot of details of a final agreement have been discussed. Now we’ll see if Russia is on board. If not, it will be a very disappointing moment for the world,” he added.

Earlier, Putin had expressed conditional support for the 30-day ceasefire plan, which aims to halt hostilities on land, sea, and air. However, he insisted that long-term peace must address deeper geopolitical issues.

“We agree with the proposal to cease hostilities, but only if it leads to lasting peace and tackles the root causes of the crisis,” Putin stated during a press conference alongside Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.

The Kremlin has suggested that further discussions, potentially including a direct call between Putin and Trump, will be needed to finalize the agreement.

He acknowledged Russian military gains and hinted at negotiations with Trump. US officials arrived in Moscow for talks.
</excerpt>

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday backed the US-brokered 30-day truce in Ukraine but insisted on more talks to resolve the root causes of the conflict.

“We support the proposal for a ceasefire, but if it is for long-term peace and the solution of the core problems of this crisis,” Putin said at a press conference in Moscow with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.

The ceasefire proposal, launched by the US and supported by Kyiv, aims to put an end to fighting on land, sea, and air for 30 days. But Putin emphasized that the ceasefire has to be something greater than a temporary suspension of hostilities.

The Russian president also mentioned that Russian troops were moving forward on almost all fronts in Ukraine. He proposed that remaining issues be settled with US representatives, perhaps even through a phone call with President Donald Trump.

“Our troops are advancing in virtually every sector of the front line,” Putin said. “But we also need to discuss key issues with our American partners, perhaps even over a phone call with President Trump.”

In the meantime, Trump’s Middle East special envoy, Steve Witkoff, had traveled to Moscow on Thursday for talks with Putin. US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz had explained details of the ceasefire plan to Russian authorities a day earlier, and Moscow welcomed more negotiations.

Trump, on Wednesday, was hopeful that the Kremlin would accept the ceasefire proposal, threatening that he had economic sanctions at his disposal in case Russia did not.

“I want peace, but if it’s necessary, I can take financial steps that would be very bad for Russia,” Trump stated. “We’ll see how it goes, but economically we could do some things that would be disastrous.”

Meanwhile, a US envoy introduced a ceasefire proposal, as Trump warned of severe sanctions if Russia rejected the deal.
</excerpt>

Russian President Vladimir Putin made his first visit to Kursk since Ukraine’s August incursion into the border region, ordering his troops to expel Ukrainian forces “as soon as possible.” This directive comes ahead of an American delegation’s arrival in Moscow to negotiate a ceasefire aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.

Return to Kursk Amid Rising Tensions

In August 2024, Ukrainian troops made a surprise incursion into the Kursk Oblast, capturing a small part of the Russian border region. Ukraine intended to use this territory as leverage in future peace negotiations. Now, as Putin tours a Kursk command post in full military camouflage, he stresses the urgency of liberating the region from Ukrainian control.

Military Orders and Tough Stance

Addressing his troops, Putin declared, “I am counting on all our combat tasks to be fulfilled, and the territory of the Kursk region will soon be completely liberated from the enemy.” He further warned that any captured Ukrainian fighters would be treated as terrorists under Russian law. Recent Russian counterattacks have reportedly reclaimed most of the seized area, including the town of Sudzha, along with hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers.

Ceasefire Negotiations on the Horizon

Simultaneously, an American envoy, Steve Witkoff, is set to travel to Moscow with a ceasefire proposal. The deal, backed by the United States, calls for an immediate 30-day ceasefire—with the possibility of extension upon mutual agreement—and a resumption of military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed Kyiv’s acceptance of the proposal, emphasizing that the ceasefire is contingent on Moscow’s agreement.

US President Donald Trump has added pressure, warning that failure by Russia to halt hostilities may trigger “devastating” financial sanctions. “Our people are heading to Russia as we speak, and hopefully, we can secure a ceasefire,” Trump stated from the White House, acknowledging that while some positive signals have been received, the situation remains precarious.

Wearing a pixelated military uniform, Putin was seen on Russian state television as he visited a military control center employed by Russian forces.

In his speech to senior military leaders, Putin emphasized the importance of destroying Ukrainian troops still present in defensive positions in Kursk. “The priority is to quickly rout the enemy entrenched in the area,” he announced.

Russia’s Chief of General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, reported to Putin on the state of the military, stating that Ukrainian troops in Kursk were now surrounded. “Their systematic destruction is underway,” reported Gerasimov.

Putin called on Russian troops to take the area back entirely from Ukrainian forces as rapidly as possible. He also made a contentious move on the captured Ukrainian troops, declaring that they would not be accorded the status of prisoner-of-war as outlined in the Geneva Conventions. Instead, he proposed that they be treated as terrorists.

“They should be treated as terrorists who commit crimes against civilians and fight our military in Kursk,” Putin said. He further asserted that Russia is not going to use international conventions of war on foreign fighters on behalf of Ukraine.

The visit follows mounting tensions and fierce fighting along Russia’s western border. Although Ukrainian troops have gained some ground, Russia is fighting back with intense military attacks. Putin’s words mark a toughening of Russia’s position on captured troops and determination to reclaim Kursk in full.

As the situation continues to change quickly, the Kremlin is steadfast in its stance, while the world watches closely as Russia declares Ukrainian combatants terrorists.

</excerpt>

Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown willingness to negotiate a temporary truce with Ukraine, as long as some conditions are fulfilled, Bloomberg quoted sources close to the talks as saying, following a meeting between Russian and US representatives in Saudi Arabia.

In these negotiations, Russian representatives were approached with former US President Donald Trump’s proposal for a ceasefire. Russia has indicated readiness to end the three-year war but demands an evident framework for a definitive peace deal in advance of accepting a temporary ceasefire, according to sources speaking with Bloomberg.

Russia’s Conditions for a Ceasefire

Major concerns of Russia are determining the composition of the peacekeeping mission and specifying what nations would take part. Russian authorities have been consistently saying they will not have any place for NATO soldiers on Ukrainian territory. That position prompted Moscow to turn down an offer of European states to create a “coalition of the willing” to run peacekeeping operations.

Instead, it has placed more faith in nations such as China, which has taken a neutral stand in the war. Moscow reportedly feels more at ease with China sending troops to handle the situation.

Future US-Ukraine Talks

While negotiations with Russia are ongoing, a US and Ukraine meeting also takes place next week in Saudi Arabia. The two nations hold their first formal discussion since President Donald Trump clashed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over a public rift.

US envoy Steve Witkoff stressed the meeting is a bid to bring “a framework for a peace agreement and a first ceasefire. Since taking office for his second term, President Trump’s strategy on the Russia-Ukraine conflict has been drastically different from earlier US diplomatic policies. His tense relationship with Ukraine has resulted in a freeze of military assistance and the withholding of intelligence sharing between the two countries.

European allies have expressed worry that such moves could spur Russian aggression, shifting the direction of the war.

He warned Ukraine that continued resistance might lead to a complete withdrawal of US involvement in the conflict.
</excerpt>

American President Donald Trump, on Friday, said it’s “easier” to bargain with Russia to bring the on-going war to an end rather than with Ukraine, noting also that he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Addressing the White House on a televised news conference, Trump said he trusts Putin on whether the war shall come to an end. “I believe him,” he replied, ascertaining that Putin is trusted.

Trump also noted that dealing with Ukraine has been more challenging, despite the country’s struggle against Russian aggression for the past three years. “I’m finding it more difficult, frankly, to deal with Ukraine, and they don’t have the cards,” he remarked. “It may be easier dealing with Russia.”

The American president has also recently ratcheted up pressure on Ukraine by suspending military and intelligence assistance, seeking to pressure Kyiv into negotiations. But while stating possible new sanctions against Russia earlier on Friday, Trump seemed to legitimize Moscow’s recent wave of mass bombings throughout Ukraine.

“I really believe he’s doing what anyone in that situation would be doing at this moment,” Trump said, alluding to Putin’s military activities. He went on to assert that Putin wants to end the war and could be “more generous than he has to be,” and that this could result in positive developments.

Trump also threatened Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with not negotiating, saying that further resistance would lead to the withdrawal of US support. “If they don’t want to make a deal, we’re out of there because we want them to make a deal,” he said. “I’m doing it to prevent death.”

Trump’s comments are likely to alarm US allies, especially those backing Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s invasion.

He also reaffirmed Russia’s influence by granting citizenship to Abkhazians, strengthening ties.
</excerpt>

Russian President Vladimir Putin has committed to keeping power supplies flowing to breakaway region Abkhazia, which is in deep energy crisis, in a Kremlin meeting with its just-elected leader, Badra Gunba, on Wednesday.

Welcoming Gunba to the Kremlin, Putin reaffirmed the “special” nature of Russia-Abkhazia relations. The election came after political instability that saw the previous leader removed from power following mass protests against an investment pact with Moscow.

Abkhazia, recognized by the international community as Georgian territory, has been experiencing regular power blackouts from low water levels at the main hydroelectric power plant and overconsumption of electricity by cryptocurrency mining businesses. Putin promised Gunba that Russia would keep exporting electricity until mid-April to help resolve the crisis.

Meanwhile, the Russian leader reaffirmed Moscow would go ahead and grant Abkhazians Russian citizenship. Gunba announced that about 70% of the population in Abkhazia already had Russian passports, pointing to Abkhazia’s close connections with Russia.

Abkhazia, a Black Sea coastal region with some 240,000 inhabitants, separated from Georgia in the early 1990s after a Moscow-backed war. Russia recognized it as independent after the 2008 conflict with Georgia, but the rest of the world regards it as Georgian territory.

In spite of political and economic dependence on Russia, however, many Abkhazians have grown uneasy about increasing Moscow influence on the territory. Georgia meanwhile criticized Abkhazia’s vote as a crude affront to its sovereignty.

With energy deficiencies and political instability continuing, Abkhazia remains a flashpoint in the broader geopolitical struggle between Russia and Georgia.
