</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that a trade agreement has been finalized with Vietnam after weeks of high-level negotiations to prevent increased tariffs on Vietnamese goods.

“I just made a Trade Deal with Vietnam. Details to follow,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

The deal is the third of its kind recently signed by the US, after it made similar deals with the United Kingdom and China. The agreements precede a pivotal July 9 deadline, when increased tariffs were to be imposed.

In April, Trump proposed a 46% tariff on Vietnamese products under his “reciprocal tariffs” program, later cutting it to 10% to leave room for negotiations. The Southeast Asian nation, now a major manufacturing base, has watched its exports to the US soar as firms relocate from China. Vietnam was the sixth-largest source of US imports in 2024, exporting goods worth close to $137 billion, the US Census Bureau reports.

The agreement was reached after US pressure to step up action against trade fraud, improve enforcement of transshipping Chinese products, and the removal of non-tariff barriers. In exchange, Vietnam pledged to eliminate all tariffs and boost imports of American goods. Senior Vietnamese leaders also signed agreements worth $3 billion in farm purchases and secured backing from leading brands like Nike, Gap, and Lululemon firms with big manufacturing bases in Vietnam.

Vietnam’s increasing trade surplus with the United States, the third-highest after China and Mexico, put it right in Trump’s tariff sights. On the eve of July 9, Vietnamese shipments accelerated, with May exports rising 35% as companies pushed to beat anticipated fines.

The new agreement is likely to deepen US-Vietnam trade ties while defusing tensions regarding the increasing trade deficit.

The move strengthens Hanoi’s influence in global governance, development finance, and South-South cooperation amid shifting geopolitical alignments.
</excerpt>

Vietnam has formally become a “partner country” of BRICS, a major milestone in its integration into the influential group of emerging nations. It was announced on Friday by the country holding the current rotating BRICS presidency.

Welcoming Vietnam’s admission, Brazil emphasized Hanoi’s growing role in the global south, citing its population of nearly 100 million and “dynamic economy” as major assets. The Brazilian government highlighted Vietnam’s alignment with BRICS goals of promoting a more inclusive and representative international order.

“Vietnam stands out as a significant player in Asia,” the statement read. “Its efforts in advancing South-South cooperation and sustainable development reinforce its shared vision with BRICS.”

Vietnam is made the tenth country to be given partner status in BRICS, along with Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. The partner status, established at the 2024 BRICS summit held in Kazan, gives countries an opportunity to interact with the group without membership.

As a partner, Vietnam may engage in certain BRICS projects and meetings on approval by full members. The status also enables closer interaction with BRICS institutions, such as the New Development Bank, to finance infrastructure development in developing countries.

Although Vietnam has not yet issued a formal statement, the action comes on the heels of heightened diplomatic engagement. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh represented Vietnam at the expanded BRICS+ summit in Kazan in 2024, and Vietnamese representatives have participated in crucial conversations, such as a June 2024 get-together in Nizhny Novgorod on cooperation with emerging economies.

Vietnam’s foreign policy has increasingly focused on reform of global governance and more equitable access to development finance objectives that are very much in line with the BRICS agenda.

Not a full member but a “partner and potential aspirant” for the New Development Bank, Vietnam would need unanimous agreement from current BRICS countries to be admitted as a full member.

Intended to ensure her financial independence, the gesture sparked praise for its uniqueness and criticism over ethical concerns involving animal use.
</excerpt>

In a remarkably lavish gesture, a Vietnamese bride was presented with an outlandish dowry by her parents: 100 civet cats. The animals play a key role in the processing of Kopi Luwak, one of the globe’s priciest and most elite coffees and so the gift was both unusual and lavish.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that the 22-year-old bride, whose identity has not been revealed, was also given a fortune of properties in addition to the animals. Her dowry comprised 25 gold bars, $20,000 in cash, stocks worth approximately $11,500, seven highly valuable properties of real estate, and other high-value items. The civet cats alone, all females, are appraised at about $70,000.

The bride price was returned by the groom’s family in the form of 10 gold bars, cash worth $7,600, and a variety of diamond jewelry.

The father of the bride said in an interview with SCMP that his aim was to provide his daughter with assets that would yield long-term returns. “My daughter has graduated from business school and is perfectly capable of handling these resources,” he said. “Whether it’s done or not, the aim is to make her independent.” He also explained that it was completely her decision whether or not she decided to raise the civet cats, or sell them.

The lavish dowry elicited conflicting opinions online. While a number of people favored the concept of business gifts, arguing it was an innovative break with the traditional dowry, others were discontented. They considered extravagance in a daughter’s financial capability through the presentation of her wealth she owned over the simple passing on of money.

Others, however, lamented the inclusion of animals in such activities. Opponents complained on moral grounds, cautioning against the threat of animal exploitation and promoting a more considerate approach to the use of animals in commercial and wedding activities.

Civet cats are highly priceless in Vietnam. They can sell for around $700 per female, with pregnant females selling more than $1,000. These animals serve a very essential role in the creation of Kopi Luwak, which is an elite coffee made from beans that pass through a civet’s digestive system.

Besides coffee production, civets are also used for their meat, which is a delicacy in Vietnam and China, and for traditional Chinese medicine products, adding to their economic importance.

CCTV footage shows the fatal accident. His grieving family is seeking support to bring his body back to India.
</excerpt>

A fatal crash in Vietnam killed a 21-year-old Indian MBBS student, Arshid Ashrith, when his speeding motorcycle crashed into a wall. The deadly accident took place in Can Tho city and was caught on CCTV, exposing the gruesome moment in stark detail.

The video posted by @Deadlykalesh on X depicts an otherwise calm street with slow-moving traffic when a speeding motorcycle comes into view from the opposite direction. In a bid to miss another cyclist, Arshith veered abruptly to the left. The maneuver saw the motorcycle swerve onto the footpath and crash against a resident’s home wall.

Watch:

The impact was so powerful that the bike turned over twice in mid-air before landing a few feet away, totally destroyed. Ashrith and his friend, who was riding pillion, were both thrown off because of the impact. Whilst Ashrith died on the spot, his friend was badly injured and is still in critical condition.

Who was Arshid Ashrith?

Ashrith, a third-year MBBS student, was from Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district of Telangana. His parents, cloth merchants by profession, are in shock over the loss. Local MLA Dr. P Harish Babu reportedly visited their residence to condole the family. He was said to have called Union Minister G Kishan Reddy on the phone during the visit and sought his intervention for speedier repatriation of Ashrith’s body to India.

It’s the third incident of Indian students abroad in a span of three months. Last month in May, 20-year-old Manav Patel and Saurav Prabhakar (23), students at Cleveland State University, died in a car accident in Pennsylvania when their car rammed into a tree and crashed into a bridge. Three weeks ago in April, 21-year-old Indian student Harsimrat Kaur Randhawa was killed by a stray bullet while standing in line at a bus stop in Canada.

These successive tragedies have put the Indian student diaspora in mourning and have evoked doubts about the safety of students abroad.

</excerpt>

Previously a war-torn nation, Vietnam is now a world manufacturing hub and one of America’s leading exporters in the top ten. However, today Vietnam is facing a new challenge—how to sustain export dominance in the face of the escalating tension between the United States and China.

At the center of the controversy is former US President Donald Trump’s plan for a 46% tariff on Vietnamese imports. The Trump administration believes Vietnam is being used as a transit hub for Chinese products, enabling companies to circumvent tariffs on Chinese goods. Though there is legitimate supply-chain adjustment in some rerouting, US authorities are calling on Hanoi to prove that Vietnamese exports are Vietnamese in origin.

Tariff Clock Ticking as Deadline Approaches

Vietnamese authorities have been aggressively negotiating to avoid the dramatic tariff from being implemented. The grace period of 90 days expires early in July, triggering a fierce debate in Washington this month. Negotiations center on responding to US worries regarding trade deception and misleading labels on Chinese products.

This pressure highlights Vietnam’s economic reliance on China for raw materials and parts. Firms such as Shein and Alibaba have increased their presence in southern Vietnam’s industrial parks, where they ship-ready products to the US. As factories grow and take on more labor, questions rise regarding product authenticity of origins.

China is Vietnam’s largest supplier of intermediate goods,” the New York Times quoted Priyanka Kishore, the founder of Asia Decoded, a Singapore consultancy, as saying. “If exports to the US are increasing, it stands to reason that imports from China are increasing too.”

Vietnam Struggles to Reassure the US

Vietnam has in turn established a special task force to crack down on smuggling and false labeling. The Finance Ministry has also collaborated with US Customs and Border Protection to strengthen inspection activities. US trade officials are, however, not convinced.

One of Trump’s main trade advisors, Peter Navarro, has characterized Vietnam as “a colony of China,” a comment that has shaken Vietnamese leaders. To try to defuse tensions, Hanoi offered to import more US products, from Boeing planes to agricultural produce. A new Trump-branded resort development under construction in Vietnam, spearheaded by Eric Trump, indicates attempts at keeping the economic relationship amiable.

Vietnam’s Growth Model Under Strain

In spite of its export success, Vietnam’s growth strategy is under strain. Vietnam is dependent on foreign investment and low-cost labor, both of which now come with constraints. Increasing wages, demographic changes, and environmental degradation are long-term threats.

Vietnam’s apparel and electronics sector are particularly exposed. “Without China, we cannot produce products. And without the US, we cannot sell the finished products,” said Tran Nhu Tung of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association.

Of textile materials, around 60% are supplied by China, so Vietnam finds it hard to curtail its reliance while satisfying Western demand.

To Lam’s Reforms Face Political Resistance

Shepherding Vietnam through this challenging period is To Lam, the new Communist Party leader and once-security officer. He has launched sweeping bureaucratic reforms, eliminated 100,000 state jobs, and vowed a new “era of national rise” and ambitious economic goals, such as double-digit growth by 2030 and $100 billion in chip exports by 2050.

But The Economist says Lam’s true challenge is transforming Vietnam’s sclerotic economic system—still controlled by wasteful state-owned enterprises and crony business groups. To maintain the momentum, analysts say, Vietnam needs to streamline business licensing, boost credit for SMEs, and gradually reduce Chinese dependence without jeopardizing bilateral relations.

But all these reforms will generate political tension among the entrenched elite, so reform is a perilous task.

Vietnam’s balancing act between China and the US has never been so precarious. While it tries to reassure Washington of its trade sincerity while relying on supplies from China, the gamble is great. If To Lam’s ambitious vision can shake off structural imperfections as well as geopolitical headwinds, Vietnam’s economic fate in the coming decades will be determined.

</excerpt>

French President Emmanuel Macron landed in Vietnam on Sunday, beginning a six-day regional tour of Southeast Asia designed to make France a reliable friend separate from rival United States and Chinese influences.

Macron begins in Hanoi, where on Monday he will meet Vietnam’s leadership and on Tuesday representatives of Vietnam’s energy sector. With France’s civil nuclear expertise in the foreground, Macron is set to showcase collaboration opportunities in the energy transition, focusing on Vietnam and Indonesia both, which are considering nuclear energy alternatives, with France facing competition from other world players such as Russia.

Prior to leaving for the region, Macron had reaffirmed France’s resolve to sovereign partnerships and world stability. “France is a power of peace and balance,” Macron posted on social media. “Where others pull back, France builds bridges.”

The visit of the French president is made at a time when nations in Southeast Asia are trying to navigate increased geopolitical pressure from Beijing and Washington. Presidential aides say Macron will promote multilateral trade rules under a framework that excludes both the protectionist tariffs of the U.S. as well as China’s aggressive trade and territorial practices, especially in the South China Sea.

In Indonesia, Macron is set to see ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn on Wednesday. On Friday, in Singapore, Macron will give the keynote address at the Shangri-La Dialogue Asia’s top security and defense gathering where he is likely to connect Russia’s conflict in Ukraine to wider regional instability, including Pyongyang’s involvement and Moscow’s military aid.

Macron is also trying to deal with Western double standards in world conflicts, particularly Gaza. His aides emphasized his intent to learn about regional sensitivities and pursue peace initiatives in the Middle East.

Through the promotion of dialogue and cooperation, Macron is trying to establish a stronger French role in Indo-Pacific affairs.

Vietnam Cracks Down on Counterfeit Imports to Dodge US Tariffs

<excerpt>Vietnam steps up its crackdown on counterfeit imports to meet US demands, targeting luxury goods, electronics, and consumer products.
</excerpt>

Vietnam is strengthening its campaign to combat counterfeits and online piracy. Vietnam has been accused by the US of being a key source of illicit activities, which could trigger substantial tariffs. To escape the penalties, the government of Vietnam is acting.

The crackdown is on imported counterfeits, especially luxury products, electronics, and consumer goods. Vietnam is seeking to demonstrate to the US that it is taking intellectual property abuses seriously.

Vietnam’s New Measures to Tackle Counterfeit Imports

Vietnam has directed its customs agency to increase inspections on its borders. They are concentrating on fake high-end products by brands such as Prada and Gucci, electronics by Google and Samsung, and consumer goods by Procter & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson.

Vietnam is making the move to help it tackle intellectual property problems as well as uphold global trade norms.

Strategy to Avoid US Tariffs

The anti-counterfeit imports crackdown is one of the moves aimed at evading US tariffs. Vietnam is threatened by a 46% duty on US-bound exports, its biggest trading partner. The tariffs may be applied in July if tariff negotiations do not advance. To avert that, Vietnam has initiated informal negotiations with the US. The negotiations are centered on trade matters, such as counterfeit items and trade fraud.

PM Pham Minh Chinh has asked officials to boost efforts against trade fraud. The government is particularly concerned about the origin of products and counterfeits. The measures are aimed at persuading the US to remove the specter of punitive tariffs. The strategy could however annoy China, Vietnam’s leading source of imports.

Long Battle Against Counterfeit Goods

Despite these interventions, fake products are still a thorn in Vietnam’s flesh. Places such as Saigon Square in Ho Chi Minh City still sell counterfeit luxury products, part of which are locally produced. The US Trade Representative (USTR) has included Vietnam on the watchlist of notorious markets for counterfeit products.

Online shopping platforms such as Shopee have also emerged as hubs for counterfeit goods. While local officials cracked down on physical markets, illegal sales of pirated goods persist online. This persistence highlights Vietnam’s struggle in protecting intellectual property rights.

Vietnam’s Commitment to Intellectual Property Protection

To enhance intellectual property enforcement, Vietnam is going to establish specialized courts. The courts will specialize in copyright law enforcement and are likely to be approved by parliament in June. The move is aimed at meeting Vietnam’s international commitments and drawing more foreign investment. The new courts will enable Vietnam to enhance its position in global trade and protect intellectual property more effectively.

Vietnam’s suppression of fake imports is central to its trade negotiations with the US. The actions of the government demonstrate its determination to combat piracy, but the nation has to balance US requirements with its trading relationship with China. The coming months will determine if these actions will de-escalate the threat of tariffs and cement Vietnam’s place in international trade.

Indian delegation head Union Minister Kiren Rijiju attended the event and even led prayers as the grandiose event marked the start of a spiritually rich tour of Vietnam.

The relics, which were flown in from the National Museum of New Delhi, will stay in the monastery up to May 8, aligning with the United Nations Day of Vesak 2025, a day commemorated all over the world to mark the birth, enlightenment, and demise of Lord Buddha. Following the first enshrinement, the relics will visit different provinces throughout Vietnam until May 21.

Sacred Cultural Exchange with Vietnam

This move by India is more than a ceremonial gesture—it is a conscious reiteration of the deep spiritual and cultural bonds between India and Vietnam. As the birthplace of Buddhism, India occupies a special position in the hearts of millions of Buddhists across the globe. By exporting Lord Buddha’s relics overseas, India reiterates its position as a guardian of common Asian heritage.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s attendance at the ceremony lent immense value to the occasion. “The sacred remains of Lord Buddha are a powerful symbol of peace, compassion, and harmony. Their passage through Vietnam will enrich our spiritual connection and respect for each other,” he averred.

A Message of Peace and Global Harmony

Interestingly, the visit occurs at a moment when regional and international tensions tend to dominate the message of peace. The ceremonial enshrinement of Buddha’s relics is a soft yet strong reminder of non-violence and compassion, pillars of the Buddha’s teachings.

The pilgrimage of relics in Vietnam will not just allow believers to experience spiritual enrichment but also inspire closer people-to-people connectivity. India’s cultural diplomacy also continues to hold good through initiatives like this that reenforces its image of being a custodian of peace and harmony and unity in diversity.

Through Vietnam, the relics now make their profound move toward the rest of the world—continuing a centuries-long journey of spiritual reminting. Along the way, they reaffirm values that, despite changing times, consistently override geographical boundaries, political divides, and the constraints of time itself.

</excerpt>

A CH-46E Sea Knight helicopter operated by the U.S. Marine Corps lifted off from the rooftop of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon on April 30, 1975, at exactly 7:53 a.m. It carried the last Marine security personnel, including Master Sergeant Juan Valdez—the final Marine to step aboard. Valdez had served in Vietnam for an entire decade, from 1965 to 1975.

Just a couple of hours later, by 10:00 a.m., Saigon had fallen to the North Vietnamese communist forces. This happened merely two years after the Paris Peace Accords, which had marked the withdrawal of American military forces from South Vietnam.

Operation Frequent Wind: A Massive Evacuation Effort

This final flight was part of Operation Frequent Wind, considered the largest helicopter evacuation ever undertaken. Over the course of April 29 and 30, 1975, the U.S. managed to evacuate 1,373 American citizens along with 5,595 Vietnamese and people from other countries.

This operation represented the last official U.S. exit from Vietnam—two decades after sending its first advisors and nearly three years after the last American combat units had left. Despite its logistical success, the evacuation reflected a painful defeat for the U.S., which had never before suffered a loss in war.

Focus of the Article

The article dives into the broader history of the Vietnam War. It discusses how the conflict shattered America’s global image of military dominance, caused immense suffering, and draws connections to current global conflicts, such as those in Ukraine, Gaza, and various parts of Africa.

A Journalist’s Take

Loren Jenkins, a former Newsweek reporter who later worked with NPR, was present in Saigon during the collapse. In a recent interview with NPR, he said: “It was a ignorant war. Never should have been waged. It was vicious, nasty to everybody—to the Americans who were sent to fight it and to the poor Vietnamese who were bombed.”

A War Without a Winner

Jenkins’ words reflect the belief that the war was both unnecessary and tragic. It left a lasting blemish on America’s reputation. Even though the U.S. succeeded in getting thousands out during Operation Frequent Wind, the whole situation was chaotic and disorganized—similar to the Kabul airport scenes during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. In both cases, many people eligible for evacuation were left behind. The main takeaway remains clear: the U.S. should never have entered the Vietnam conflict in the first place.

Commemorations in Vietnam

On April 30 this year, Vietnam marked the 50th anniversary of what it calls the end of the “American War.” In Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), the government held a huge celebration that included military parades, traditional dances, and political speeches hailing the end of foreign occupation as “the triumph of justice.”

How Allies Became Enemies

After World War II, many Vietnamese had looked up to the U.S. for helping to push back against the Japanese. Even Ho Chi Minh, the leader of North Vietnam, initially viewed America positively. But over time—and through the administrations of five different U.S. presidents—relations between the two countries broke down, eventually turning into full-blown war.

What Led to the War?

Vietnam is located thousands of miles away from the U.S., and most Americans back then couldn’t even point to it on a map. However, the American government feared that communism would spread across Asia. In 1947, President Harry Truman promised to support any nation threatened by communism. Soon after, he approved aid to Vietnam, including military advisors, vehicles, and supplies. This marked the beginning of deep U.S. involvement in the region.

The War Breaks Out

In 1954, the French were defeated at Dien Bien Phu and gave up their colonial rule. Although President Eisenhower was cautious, especially after the Korean War, he still backed South Vietnam’s leader, Ngo Dinh Diem, based on the belief in the “domino theory”—that if one country fell to communism, others would follow.

Vietnam was divided into two: Ho Chi Minh ruled the communist North, and Diem, with U.S. support, controlled the South. Both sides used brutal methods, including torture and assassinations. Open conflict soon followed, drawing the U.S. deeper into war.

U.S. Involvement Grows

Until John F. Kennedy was assassinated, the American role remained somewhat limited. But after the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964, Congress gave President Lyndon B. Johnson full authority to expand the war.

Johnson sent thousands of troops and began Operation Rolling Thunder, a major bombing campaign that lasted for years. By 1967, half a million American soldiers were in Vietnam, and anti-war demonstrations had spread throughout the U.S.

A Lingering National Pain

Though many Americans remember the fall of Saigon with sadness, most agree that staying longer wouldn’t have changed the result. The war dragged on for almost 15 years, cost $140 billion, and killed 58,220 American soldiers—ending in a defeat. As The New York Times wrote on the 50th anniversary, “The Vietnam War became a stubborn wound in American life.”

Vietnam’s Transformation

While the war still haunts American memory, Vietnam has moved on. Despite losing more than three million people, the country has become economically strong. With an annual growth rate of 6 percent and a per capita income close to $5,000, Vietnam is now one of the U.S.’s top trading partners—with a total trade volume of $49 billion (although the U.S. has a $23 billion trade deficit with Vietnam).

Even though Vietnam remains a one-party communist state, it is thriving. Interestingly, both the U.S. and China are now trying to build strong ties with the country. But Vietnam is balancing both—it cannot pick just one ally.

Lessons Still Unlearned

War has been a constant in human history, but it brings enormous pain—mostly to ordinary people. Every year, Vietnam honors its fallen and remembers how it overcame the French, the Americans, and the South Vietnamese regime.

For the U.S., the fall of Saigon sparked deep self-examination about its role in global politics. Yet that didn’t stop America from getting involved in more wars—some public, others secret.

The consequences of the Vietnam War still influence global affairs today. And despite all the hard lessons, violent conflicts continue around the world. Most of these wars are unnecessary. While governments and armies may have their reasons, the only real winners are arms manufacturers. Humanity pays the true cost. The time has come to choose peace over violence and harmony over destruction.

In a significant display of spiritual unity, the sacred Buddha Relic from Sarnath arrived in Vietnam on Friday for a public exposition, coinciding with the United Nations Day of Vesak 2025. The relic, accompanied by a distinguished Indian delegation led by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, was received with great reverence at the Vietnam Buddhist University.

Ceremonial Arrival and Procession

The relic was honored in a solemn ceremony at the university, after which it was taken in a grand procession to Thanh Tam Pagoda for public veneration. The International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) shared the event’s details on X, saying, “The Holy Buddha Relic from India arrived in Vietnam, was taken to the Buddha Hall at the Vietnam Buddhist University for a sacred ceremony and then brought through a grand procession to Thanh Tam Pagoda, where the Public Exposition of the Sacred Relic will take place.”

The Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City also shared the news, stating, “The sacred Buddha’s relics from India have arrived in Vietnam, were brought to the Vietnam Buddhist Academy for a solemn ceremony, then carried through a solemn parade to Thanh Tam Pagoda, where the revered relics will be displayed for the public.”

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s Statement

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed his deep gratitude for leading the delegation that brought the relic to Vietnam. He described the experience as a deeply moving one. “Humbled to lead the delegation carrying the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha to Vietnam, an experience that touches the soul,” Rijiju shared on X. He also noted that the relics would remain in Vietnam until May 21 as part of the UN’s Vesak Day celebrations. He was accompanied by revered monks, Shri Kandula Durgesh Ji, Minister for Tourism, Culture & Cinematography of Andhra Pradesh, and other officials on this sacred journey of peace, compassion, and harmony.

A Relic with Ancient Significance

The Holy Relic, enshrined in Mulagandha Kuti Vihara in Sarnath, was excavated in Nagarjuna Konda, Andhra Pradesh. It is believed to be over 1,800 years old, dating back to before 246 CE.

Vietnam’s Connection to the Relic

Abhijit Halder, Director General of the IBC, emphasized the importance of this event for Vietnam, which has a large Buddhist population. He stated, “For them, the relics are not just symbols but the Buddha himself.” He also highlighted the event’s significance, as it coincides with Vietnam’s National Day and Wesak Day celebrations. Halder added, “Very few people realize that Buddhist artifacts from India, dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, have counterparts in Vietnam. We are also organizing a comparative exhibition to showcase these shared histories.”

Expected Devotion and Exhibition Schedule

The exhibition is expected to draw over three million devotees, who will pay homage to the relics during the 20-day display in Vietnam. The relics will first be displayed in Ho Chi Minh City from May 2 to 8, then travel to three other locations until May 21.

</excerpt>

As tensions in international trade rise, Vietnam stands at the intersection of great economic powers. Chinese President Xi Jinping recently visited to Hanoi which indicates China’s interest in deepening relations with Vietnam, particularly trade and supply chain ties. The action comes as the US slaps high tariffs on Chinese products, leading Beijing to look for deeper regional alliances.

At the same time, Vietnam is also making strategic concessions to America, such as reducing tariffs and sanctioning Starlink services, to neutralize the risk of trade penalties. This balancing act is a testament to Vietnam’s central position in the changing dynamics of China-Vietnam trade relations.

Xi Jinping visit to Hanoi

President Xi Jinping’s trip to Vietnam represents a major step in China’s moves to shore up regional alliances amid rising US trade pressures. While in the country, Xi Jinping underscored the value of cooperation in production, supply chains, artificial intelligence, and green technology.

Vietnam’s strategic concessions to the US

It has cut tariffs on a number of American imports, including liquefied natural gas and cars, and given the go-ahead to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite-based internet services.

Vietnam is also strengthening its controls on Chinese goods re-exported through its borders to meet origin requirements in order to avoid additional trade tensions with the US.

Navigating the US-China trade war

Vietnam’s economic situation is closely connected to both China and the US, and it is exposed to the current trade war between the two giants. Although China is Vietnam’s largest trading partner, the US is its main export market.

This dual dependence requires cautious diplomacy to be able to have good relations with both nations. Vietnam’s recent policy changes show its attempt to balance these two relationships and protect its economic interests.

Infrastructure development

China’s offer to finance and build new Vietnamese railway lines has its opportunities as well as drawbacks. Improved infrastructure will help raise connectivity of trade, but increased Chinese presence is a cause of concern for the influence in Vietnamese internal affairs. Vietnam needs to balance economic gain with issues related to sovereignty as it looks into these infrastructure initiatives.

Being situated between two economic giants means that Vietnam needs to exercise prudent diplomacy and strategic decision-making. By reaching out to both China and the US, Vietnam tries to support its economic development while reducing risk from the global trade war. The changeable China-Vietnam trade ties will continue to influence Southeast Asia’s economic situation.

</excerpt>

Vietnam and Spain are moving closer together—both economically and militarily—as US tariffs menace world trade. Vietnam currently pays a 46% tariff on exports to the US, while EU exports, including those of Spain, are charged at 25% duty. The two nations are, therefore, deepening bilateral ties in reaction. During the visit of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to Hanoi, the two leaders pledged backing for free trade, more defense cooperation, and large infrastructure projects—particularly Vietnam’s plan for a high-speed rail system.

Free Trade Stance Strengthens Under Pressure

During the visit, both leaders urged upgraded ties. Vietnam particularly desires to take relations to a “comprehensive strategic partnership.” PM Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that global challenges require more cooperation. Sanchez, on the other hand, expressed firm support for multilateralism. Sanchez also emphasized that trade wars hurt all parties.

In addition, Spain is seeking to increase its presence in Vietnam. Priority areas are agriculture, renewable energy, AI, and education. A number of new deals were signed—animal and plant health, fisheries, and diplomatic training.

With Trump’s retaliatory tariffs piling on the pressure, this emerging partnership sends a strong message. Both countries are committed to open markets and mutual growth, even as the world’s politics become more inward-looking.

Spain Joins Vietnam’s Mega Project

A top result of the visit is the interest of Spain in Vietnam’s planned North-South high-speed rail. Spanning $67 billion, the project will connect Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City via a 1,541-km track. As a country reputed for its well-developed railway systems, Spain has made the offer of technical assistance and capital.

Vietnam has accepted the offer. Based on Deputy Transport Minister Nguyen Danh Huy, the two countries could collaborate in construction and capacity building.

Evidently, this alliance is a win-win for both. Vietnam receives new infrastructure. Spain gains a strategic position in Southeast Asia. During an era of changing allegiances, Vietnam and Spain are forging their own way—based on trade, innovation, and confidence.

</excerpt>

Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc and senior executives from the country’s biggest airlines, Vietnam Airlines JSC and Vietjet Aviation JSC, will visit the United States this weekend as the nation prepares for possible US tariffs, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday.

By sources and an official agenda, representatives of airlines are due to sit down with officials from Boeing and some US banks, while Phoc is due to engage in discussions in Washington. The visit coincides with US President Donald Trump poised to unveil dramatic new reciprocal tariffs on world trade partners.

Over the past weeks, Vietnam has made a series of moves aimed at reducing its trade surplus with the United States, which last year stood at over $123 billion. Such measures involve bolstering US imports as a way to avert the possible tariffs by the Trump administration.

Vietnam has also permitted Elon Musk’s SpaceX to pilot its Starlink satellite internet product in the country, marking even more economic partnership with US companies.

As a major exporter to America, Vietnam is largely dependent on demand from the United States, and almost a third of its economic output targets the American market. The fact that high-level officials and business leaders visited Vietnam is a testament to Vietnam’s strategic aspiration to uphold robust trade ties and adapt to the changing economic landscape.

</excerpt>

United States will provide $12.5 million in assistance to Vietnam to bolster its maritime law enforcement and combat illegal fishing, the US embassy in Hanoi announced on Thursday. This support will enhance the capabilities of Vietnamese maritime agencies, provide small boats, and fund the construction of training facilities.

Vietnam has faced growing pressure from its neighbors and trade partners to take more decisive action against illegal fishing, particularly by Vietnamese vessels in the waters of surrounding nations. European Union, a key trade partner, has warned of a potential ban on fish imports from Vietnam if the country does not show significant progress in curbing illegal fishing practices. This has led to a sharp decline in Vietnam’s fish exports to the EU, one of its largest markets.

In addition to its maritime challenges, Vietnam has frequent confrontations with China over territorial disputes in the South China Sea. These tensions often involve coastguard vessels, fishermen, and law enforcement ships from both nations.

The US embassy reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a “free and open Indo-Pacific” and expressed its desire for a “strong, prosperous, independent, and resilient Vietnam,” reflecting the broader geopolitical interests behind the aid package.

</excerpt>

For decades, society has set specific ages for major life milestones such as career development, marriage, and having children.

In many cultures, family expectations place considerable pressure on young adults. However, Vietnamese women have found a way to navigate the stress of marriage.

According to a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), renting boyfriends has become an increasingly popular trend. This practice allows women to avoid the social stigma of being single, especially during family events like the Lunar New Year in Vietnam.

The growing popularity of this trend is driven by the pressure young people face to marry and start families. By opting for this solution, women can manage societal expectations without committing to marriage.

Must Read: ‘Canada Should Be 51st State’: Trump Tells Trudeau Amid Tariff Tensions

Know how Vietnamese women are renting boyfriends

An increasing number of women are turning to services that offer rented boyfriends to alleviate the family pressure surrounding marriage and relationships.

Minh Thu, a 30-year-old professional from northern Vietnam, resorted to this service after her parents insisted she bring a boyfriend home for the Lunar New Year. Single for five years due to her demanding career, she felt the pressure when her parents pretended to be ill and expressed their desire for grandchildren.

Thu paid several million Vietnamese dong (a few hundred US dollars) to hire a man five years older than her to pose as her boyfriend, as reported by Vietnamese media outlet VnExpress. They prepared for the visit by exchanging family details and creating an “emotional connection.”

Her hired partner, skilled in domestic chores and social interactions, impressed her family. “On the day he came to my house, he helped my mum cook and chatted with my relatives. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen my parents so happy and proud of me,” Thu told SCMP.

Khanh Ngoc had a similar experience when she rented a younger, attractive man who successfully won over her parents. “Since then, my relationship with my parents has improved,” she said.

Huy Tuan, a 25-year-old from Hanoi, has worked as a “fake boyfriend” for over a year. Tuan invests in his appearance and skills, including going to the gym, learning to cook, and improving his singing and conversational abilities to meet his clients’ expectations.

Tuan limits himself to three to four clients a month to ensure quality service. For him, rates for a coffee date or shopping trip start at a few hundred thousand Vietnamese dong (US$10–$20), while family meetings cost about 1 million Vietnamese dong (US$40).

In most cases, rental contracts prohibit emotional involvement and sexual harassment.

This practice underscores the cultural emphasis on marriage in Vietnam, where parents often see their children’s single status as a failure in parenting. The pressure is further heightened by their desire for grandchildren while they are still able to help raise them.

The risk

The practice of renting boyfriends, while offering a quick solution to family pressures, can pose significant risks, particularly in terms of emotional repercussions, according to experts.

Nguyen Thanh Nga, a researcher at the Academy of Journalism and Communication in Vietnam, told SCMP, “If exposed, families could experience significant emotional damage and lose trust. Additionally, renting a partner is not legally protected in Vietnam, so women should be especially cautious.”

Sociologist Dr. Pham Thi Thuy also pointed out that this trend highlights deeper issues in family communication. “Marriage should follow the children’s plans, but it is often forced to fit their parents’ schedule,” she told VnExpress.

The disconnect between parental expectations and children’s life choices often leads to conflicts, and hiring a fake partner may provide only a temporary solution to this broader societal issue.

The trend

The trend of renting boyfriends has gained significant attention through social media platforms, which act as hubs for women to connect with men offering temporary relationship services.

According to a forum administrator overseeing a group with over 20,000 members, the practice is especially popular during family-centric celebrations like the Lunar New Year, when parental pressure to settle down intensifies. One social media observer told SCMP, “Marrying without a successful career just leads to a lot of problems. Renting a partner is a win-win – it makes your parents happy and alleviates pressure on you.”

However, not everyone agrees. Another commenter remarked, “I can’t imagine how heartbreaking it would be for parents to find out it was a lie.”

Notably, this practice is not limited to Vietnam; it is also popular in China, where marriage rates are hitting record lows. In the first half of this year, only 3.43 million marriages were registered in China, marking the lowest figure in a decade.

Many young Chinese also rent partners during major festivals like the Mid-Autumn Festival and Lunar New Year, with daily fees typically around 1,000 yuan (US$140).

</excerpt>

A Vietnamese court on Tuesday upheld the death sentence for real estate tycoon Truong My Lan, rejecting her appeal in a high-profile $12 billion fraud case, according to state media.

Lan, the chairwoman of Van Thinh Phat Holdings Group, was convicted in April of embezzlement and bribery, marking Vietnam’s largest financial fraud on record. The High People’s Court in Ho Chi Minh City ruled there was insufficient grounds to reduce her sentence, as reported by VnExpress.

However, the sentence could be commuted to life imprisonment if Lan repays three-quarters of the embezzled funds while on death row, the report added.

Lan is one of the most prominent figures caught in Vietnam’s anti-corruption drive, dubbed the “Blazing Furnace” campaign. Prosecutors argued her actions caused “unprecedented” harm to society, the financial market, and the economy.

Despite her defense citing mitigating factors, such as partial repayment and remorse, prosecutors deemed them insufficient. Lan retains the right to seek a review under cassation or retrial procedures.

Her arrest in 2022 triggered a run on the Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank (SCB), largely owned by her proxies. Vietnam’s central bank reportedly injected $24 billion in emergency funds to stabilize SCB.

In addition to her death sentence, Lan received a life sentence in October for fraud, money laundering, and illegal money transfers.

Groups make arrangements where people can hire someone to accompany them to family events or social gatherings. However, there are clear boundaries in such arrangements that state no affection or romantic interest is allowed so that a professional relationship exists.

Personal Stories of ‘Hired Love’

One such instance involved Minh Thu, a 30-year-old woman from Nam Dinh province, who hired a man to pose as her boyfriend during a family gathering. “He helped my mother cook and engaged with my relatives. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen my parents so happy and proud,” she shared. The arrangement cost her several hundred U.S. dollars but provided temporary relief from the pressure.

Marriage as a Cultural Milestone

In Vietnamese culture, marriage is often seen as a reflection of parental success, with single children facing scrutiny from their families. The urgency for grandchildren further amplifies this pressure. For many parents, their child’s marital status is deeply tied to their own societal standing and personal fulfilment.

Experts Raise Concerns Over Risks

Experts view the trend as a double-edged sword. While it offers young adults a temporary reprieve, it underscores deeper issues in family communication. Nguyen Thanh Nga, a researcher at the Academy of Journalism and Communication, highlighted that these arrangements are not legally protected, posing risks for participants. “If exposed, families could face significant emotional distress and loss of trust,” Nga noted.

A Need for Better Family Dynamics

Sociologist Dr. Pham Thi Thuy emphasised that the root cause lies in generational conflicts. “Parents often impose their schedules on their children’s lives, leading to disagreements. Marriage should align with the individual’s plans, not their parents’ timeline,” she explained.

Navigating Tradition and Modernity

While renting partners may alleviate immediate family pressure, it sheds light on the need for a cultural shift toward better communication and understanding within families. As Vietnam evolves, balancing traditional values with modern perspectives remains a challenge for its youth.

His performance, which earned him the trophy over French dancer Rubix, has taken social media by storm, with millions of viewers calling it “the most fun performance ever.”

Over 5,000 spectators gathered in Mumbai to watch 16 dancers compete for the coveted title at the Red Bull Dance Your Style finale. Unlike traditional dance competitions, there were no judges; the dancers had to win the crowd’s approval to advance.

MT Pop became the first Vietnamese dancer to clinch the Red Bull Dance Your Style title with his vibrant freestyle to the Punjabi track ‘Mundian to Bach Ke.’ His ‘nagin’ dance, inspired by the celebratory moves seen during Indian wedding processions, had the audience in raptures. Many viewers compared his energetic steps to those of baraatis, saying his performance gave “full baraat vibes.”

</excerpt>

A real-life story in Vietnam is drawing parallels to the Korean drama Autumn in My Heart. A man grew suspicious of his daughter’s appearance, feeling she was becoming “too pretty” and noticing that she didn’t resemble him or his wife. This led him to conduct a DNA test, revealing that he was not her biological father and uncovering a shocking hospital mix-up.

The family’s suspicions deepened when Lan, now a teenager, switched schools and met another girl born on the same day and at the same hospital. Lan’s father, struggling with doubts, had once even accused his wife of infidelity in a moment of intoxication. His wife, Hong, denied the accusations and decided to move with Lan to Hanoi, where the truth would eventually surface.

At her new school, Lan formed a close friendship with a girl who shared her birthdate. The girls’ connection led to a joint birthday celebration organized by Lan’s friend’s mother, who was struck by Lan’s strong resemblance to herself. This prompted the friend’s family to suggest a DNA test, which Hong agreed to, finally confirming that the two girls had been switched at birth, likely due to a hospital error.

Since the revelation, the two families have become close and are planning to share the truth with the girls when the timing feels right.

The story sparked lively discussions online. One user noted, “The story is really thrilling, like the plot twists in the Korean TV drama Autumn in My Heart.” Another added, “It tells us that if it is not necessary, do not randomly test DNA, as it can just cause yourself unnecessary trouble.” A third commenter remarked, “The medical staff made a ridiculous mistake. Fortunately, the truth finally came out. Otherwise, even jumping into the Yellow River could not clear the wife’s name.”

The typhoon has killed at least 155 people across Vietnam and caused widespread destruction, including collapsing bridges and flooding factories. Thousands have been evacuated, and schools are closed amid ongoing rain.
</excerpt>

Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi, has evacuated thousands of residents living near the Red River as its waters reached a 20-year high, flooding streets in the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi. The typhoon, Asia’s most powerful this year, hit the country’s northern regions, leaving at least 155 dead and triggering widespread devastation.

Typhoon Yagi made landfall on Saturday, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall as it moved westward. The storm caused a bridge collapse and widespread destruction across provinces along the Red River, the region’s largest waterway. “My home is now part of the river,” said Nguyen Van Hung, 56, a resident of a neighborhood on the Red River’s banks.

The Vietnamese government reported that the typhoon, along with subsequent landslides and floods, has resulted in 155 fatalities, with 141 people still missing. The state-run power utility EVN announced on Wednesday that it had cut power in some flooded areas of the capital due to safety concerns.

The Red River is at its highest level in two decades, according to Mai Van Khiem, director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. More rainfall is expected in the coming days. Schools in Hanoi have advised students to stay home, and thousands of residents from low-lying areas have been evacuated.

In the city center, the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation evacuated its office on Tuesday amid flood warnings. “People were moving frantically, relocating items and motorbikes,” said spokesperson Carlota Torres Lliro, expressing concern for children and families living in makeshift riverside homes.

EVN also halted the discharge of water from the Hoa Binh hydropower dam, Vietnam’s second-largest in the north, into the Da River, a tributary of the Red River, to reduce water flow. Vietnamese authorities voiced concerns about Chinese hydropower plants releasing water into another Red River tributary, the Lo River.

Typhoon Yagi has also heavily impacted industrial hubs east of Hanoi, disrupting global supply chains. Factories and warehouses have been flooded, forcing closures, with some operations expected to resume only after several weeks. In northern provinces, landslides triggered by flooding have killed dozens.

In Thai Nguyen, about 60 kilometers from Hanoi, residents reported severe flooding. “My house’s first floor is completely underwater,” said Nguyen Duc Tam, a local resident, who also noted a lack of fresh water and electricity. Another resident, Hoang Hai Luan, remarked that he had not seen such severe flooding in more than 20 years. Many residents have lost their belongings in the disaster.

Despite the widespread devastation, a Reuters witness reported no signs of flooding at Samsung Electronics’ large facility on the outskirts of Hanoi, where half of its global smartphone shipments are produced.

</excerpt>

Typhoon Yagi, Asia’s most powerful storm this year, was downgraded to a tropical depression after causing significant damage in northern Vietnam over the weekend. Striking on Saturday, the storm devastated the country’s industrial hubs, damaging factories and infrastructure. Although the storm has weakened, authorities continue to warn of potential flooding and landslides as Yagi moves westward.

Amid the destruction, a heartwarming moment has gone viral, highlighting the resilience and unity of the Vietnamese people. A video posted on Instagram by Tubudd.com, a digital platform connecting travelers with local guides, has garnered 300 lakh views. The video shows a biker struggling against the storm’s fierce winds, only to be shielded by nearby cars that formed a protective barrier. In another clip, a group of motorcyclists is seen being carefully guided by cars moving at a steady pace, ensuring their safety during the storm.

</excerpt>

Typhoon Yagi, Asia’s most powerful storm this year, struck northern Vietnam over the weekend, leaving at least 24 people dead and 299 injured. The typhoon made landfall on the country’s northeastern coast on Saturday, triggering widespread landslides and flooding, the government reported.

The storm, which has severely disrupted power supplies and telecommunications in several regions, particularly Quang Ninh and Haiphong—has caused extensive damage. The government issued a statement on Sunday, warning that the risk of further flooding and landslides remains high.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that rainfall in the affected areas ranged between 208mm and 433mm (8.2in to 17.1in) over the past 24 hours. “Floods and landslides are damaging the environment and threatening people’s lives,” the center stated, with high-risk areas identified in the provinces of Lang Son, Cao Bang, Yen Bai, and Thai Nguyen.

Yagi weakened to a tropical depression on Sunday, but not before inflicting significant damage. In Hoa Binh province, a family of four was killed when a hillside collapsed onto their home. Elsewhere, six people, including a newborn and a one-year-old, died in a landslide in the Hoang Lien Son mountains, triggered by heavy rains and high winds.

In Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO world heritage site, 30 vessels sank due to strong winds and waves, while nearly 3,300 houses and over 120,000 hectares of crops were damaged across northern Vietnam. Before reaching Vietnam, Typhoon Yagi also wreaked havoc in southern China and the Philippines, causing additional fatalities and injuries.

The increased frequency and severity of typhoons in the region have been linked to climate change, with storms forming closer to the coast, intensifying more rapidly, and remaining over land for longer periods, according to a study published in July.

The storm, with winds reaching 160 km/h in Vietnam, led to fatalities, power outages, and infrastructure damage. Nearly 50,000 people were evacuated, and airports and schools in northern Vietnam were closed.
</excerpt>

Typhoon Causes Widespread Damage Across Asia

Super Typhoon Yagi, the strongest storm to hit Asia in 2024, made landfall in northern Vietnam on Saturday, September 7. The storm, which previously struck China’s southern Hainan island, has caused significant devastation, including fatalities and injuries. In Hainan, Yagi claimed two lives and injured dozens, according to the meteorological agency. It is the world’s second-strongest tropical cyclone of the year, with its peak winds recorded at 234 kilometers per hour (145 miles per hour) over Hainan. As it hit northern Vietnam, winds had decreased to 160 kilometers per hour (99 miles per hour).

Impact in Vietnam

The coastal city of Haiphong, an industrial center with 2 million residents and home to major factories and the local automaker VinFast, has suffered severe damage. Power outages have affected parts of the city, and reports describe shattered windows and fallen tree branches. Authorities have evacuated nearly 50,000 people from coastal regions and deployed 450,000 military personnel for emergency response. Four airports, including Hanoi’s Noi Bai, have been closed temporarily, resulting in over 300 flight cancellations. Schools in 12 northern provinces, including Hanoi, have also been shut.

Ongoing Threat and Climate Change Concerns

As Yagi continues its path inland, scientists highlight concerns about increasing storm intensity due to rising ocean temperatures linked to climate change. Last week, Typhoon Shanshan hit southwestern Japan, marking the most severe storm in decades. Yagi, named after the Japanese word for “goat” and the Capricorn constellation, remains a significant threat as it moves further inland.

The decline in India’s global trade share raises concerns over its future as a manufacturing hub.
</excerpt>

India’s share in global trade has not kept up with its rapidly growing economy, causing the country to lose its competitive edge in manufacturing exports to smaller rivals like Bangladesh and Vietnam, according to a new report from the World Bank. The report highlights concerns over India’s declining trade in goods and services as a percentage of its GDP.

Decline in India’s Global Trade Share

The World Bank’s report points out that while India’s economy has expanded significantly, its share of global trade, particularly in manufacturing, has been decreasing over the past decade. The country’s global export share in key sectors such as apparel, leather, textiles, and footwear grew from 0.9% in 2002 to a peak of 4.5% in 2013, but this figure has since dropped to 3.5% in 2022. In contrast, Bangladesh’s share in these sectors reached 5.1%, while Vietnam’s stood at 5.9% in 2022.

Challenges and Opportunities

The World Bank suggests that India needs to address several challenges to regain its competitiveness. This includes lowering trade costs, reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers, and revising trade agreements. Nora Dihel, a senior economist at the World Bank, emphasized the need for immediate action, stating, “This is a call to action for India to focus on these areas.”

Government’s Manufacturing Ambitions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to position India as a global manufacturing hub, especially as businesses diversify their supply chains away from China. The Indian government has invested billions in subsidies to attract investments in industries such as electronics and chip-making. However, India’s export sectors are increasingly capital-intensive and are not absorbing the millions of jobless individuals in the country. The World Bank estimated that employment related to exports fell from 9.5% of total domestic employment in 2012 to 6.5% in 2020.

Future Growth Outlook

Despite these challenges, the World Bank remains optimistic about India’s economic growth. It expects the economy to grow at a robust pace of 7% in the current fiscal year, with growth likely to average 6.7% in the subsequent years.

</excerpt>

The Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) has announced the dismantling of Fmovies, which they describe as the “largest pirate streaming operation in the world.” The action was taken by Vietnamese authorities, who conducted a raid in Hanoi, leading to the shutdown of Fmovies and its network of affiliated sites. Between January 2023 and June 2024, these sites reportedly attracted over 6.7 billion visits, indicating the massive scale of the operation.

Details of the Operation

Two suspects were arrested during the raid, although no charges have been filed against them yet. The shutdown also targeted the video hosting provider Vidsrc.to and its affiliated sites, which ACE claims were managed by the same group behind Fmovies.

Industry Reactions

Charles Rivkin, CEO of the Motion Picture Association (MPA) and chairman of ACE, praised the crackdown as a significant win for the global creative community, including casts, crews, writers, directors, and studios. ACE, which consists of major entertainment companies such as Netflix, Disney, and Warner Bros., has been at the forefront of the fight against digital piracy, emphasizing the substantial financial losses piracy inflicts on the entertainment industry.

Impact on the Pirate Streaming Landscape

Fmovies, which began operations in 2016, had become a major player in the illegal streaming sector. At its height in 2023, it was ranked as the 11th most popular website globally in the TV, movies, and streaming category, according to SimilarWeb. The network included several well-known piracy sites like bflixz, flixtorz, movies7, myflixer, and aniwave.

The dismantling of Fmovies and its associated platforms is part of a broader crackdown on piracy websites. Recently, other popular illegal streaming sites like Aniwave and AnimeFlix have also gone offline, although ACE has not explicitly claimed involvement in those particular shutdowns.

Broader Implications

The takedown of Fmovies and Vidsrc.to has sent ripples through online communities that frequent pirated content. On platforms such as Reddit, users have expressed concern and are seeking alternative sites for accessing pirated media. Some former operators of piracy sites have begun to advocate for legal paid services, urging respect for content creators.

Industry’s Stance on Piracy

The MPA and other industry stakeholders argue that online piracy significantly undermines their revenue streams. However, there is a counterargument suggesting that the proliferation of piracy sites is, in part, a reaction to the fragmentation of content across multiple legal streaming services and the often unpredictable removal of titles from these platforms.

Larissa Knapp, the chief content protection officer for the MPA, emphasized that the takedown of Fmovies serves as a “powerful deterrent message” to other piracy operations. This action underscores the entertainment industry’s ongoing efforts to combat digital piracy and protect its content.

The agreements aim to strengthen bilateral ties and boost economic growth.
</excerpt>

14 New Deals Highlight Enhanced Cooperation

China and Vietnam signed 14 agreements on Monday, covering areas from cross-border railways to crocodile exports, following a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Vietnam’s new leader, To Lam, in Beijing. Lam’s visit, his first overseas trip since becoming party chief earlier this month, underscores the commitment of both communist nations to deepen their relationship amidst growing trade and investment.

Railway Upgrades and Economic Growth

Among the key agreements are plans for standardizing and upgrading cross-border rail routes, aimed at improving connectivity between the two countries. This initiative follows preliminary agreements made in December during Xi’s state visit to Hanoi. The planned rail links include routes connecting China’s Shenzhen to Vietnam’s Haiphong and a line through the mountainous Lao Cai to Haiphong.

Current rail connections between China and Vietnam involve infrastructure dating back to the French colonial era, with different gauges requiring passengers and goods to switch trains at the border. Upgrading the Vietnamese rail infrastructure is expected to boost trade and investment, particularly as Chinese manufacturers relocate operations to Vietnam due to trade tensions with the United States.

Broadening Cooperation Across Sectors

In addition to rail infrastructure, the agreements cover various sectors including financial cooperation between central banks, media exchanges, health collaborations, and the quarantine and inspection of coconuts, crocodiles, and durians. Xi and Lam discussed these matters over tea in a “cordial and friendly atmosphere,” with a joint declaration on strengthening their strategic partnership anticipated.

Lam’s visit also includes meetings with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and visits to locations in Guangzhou associated with former President Ho Chi Minh’s revolutionary activities. China and Vietnam, which established diplomatic relations in 1950 and a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2008, continue to expand their cooperation on both international and regional issues.

He will meet with Chinese leaders Xi Jinping and Li Qiang, emphasizing the strong ties between the two nations. The visit highlights ongoing cooperation despite occasional disputes, particularly regarding the South China Sea.
</excerpt>

On Sunday, Vietnam President To Lam, arrived in China for a three-day visit, as reported by Chinese state media. During his stay, Lam is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, according to Beijing’s foreign ministry.

Lam, who was recently elevated to Vietnam’s top position as the General Secretary of the ruling Communist Party, touched down in Guangzhou, where state broadcaster CCTV noted that he will visit significant sites related to former President Ho Chi Minh’s revolutionary activities in the area.

China and Vietnam have maintained diplomatic relations since 1950, and in 2008, the two nations established a comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation. This partnership was further strengthened in 2013 to address shared international and regional concerns.

Lam’s visit underscores the close ties between the two communist neighbors, who maintain robust economic and trade relations despite occasional disputes over territorial boundaries in the resource-rich South China Sea. China has portrayed Lam’s visit as a continuation of Xi’s December trip to Vietnam, highlighting it as “a good start” to building a “China-Vietnam community of shared future with strategic significance.”

This state visit marks Lam’s first since taking office, reflecting the importance he places on developing ties between the two nations. Last December, China and Vietnam signed more than a dozen agreements, including those aimed at enhancing railway cooperation and establishing communication channels to manage unexpected incidents in the South China Sea. However, the specifics of these agreements were not disclosed to the public.
