Dia Gosai, a specially-abled girl from Vadodara, had the unique opportunity to present portraits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish President Pedro Sanchez during their roadshow on Monday. The leaders visited Vadodara to inaugurate the Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Airbus facility, which is set to manufacture C-295 military aircraft. The roadshow stretched 2.5 kilometers from the airport to the aircraft manufacturing site.

Excited to meet the leaders, Dia patiently awaited her moment to present the portraits. Both Modi and Sanchez took the time to converse with her. “I was thrilled to learn that PM Modi was coming to Vadodara, and I wanted to give him something special. When he received the sketch, he shook my hand, which made me very happy. PM Modi even introduced me to President Sanchez,” an ecstatic Dia shared with reporters.

The roadshow featured cultural performances that celebrated India’s rich heritage, welcoming the leaders to the city. The new Tata-Airbus facility marks the country’s first private sector final assembly line for military aircraft. Under the agreement, 40 aircraft will be constructed in Vadodara, with Airbus directly supplying 16 aircraft. Tata Advanced Systems will handle the manufacturing of these 40 planes, establishing a comprehensive ecosystem that includes manufacturing, assembly, testing, and maintenance throughout the aircraft’s lifecycle. In addition to Tata, major defense public sector units such as Bharat Electronics and Bharat Dynamics, along with various private micro, small, and medium enterprises, will play a role in this initiative.

Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez Lands in Vadodara, Set to Meet PM Modi

Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez touched down in Vadodara, Gujarat, early Monday morning for a three-day visit to India. During his trip, he will engage in delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Upon his arrival, the Ministry of External Affairs welcomed Sanchez on the social media platform X, stating, “Bienvenido a India!” They added, “PM of the Government of Spain Pedro Sanchez touches down in Vadodara, marking the first visit by a Spanish PM to India in 18 years. An official visit to elevate India-Spain relations to new heights.”

Warm Welcome in Vadodara

Sanchez was greeted at the Vadodara International Airport by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. His visit includes the inauguration of the Final Assembly Line Plant for C295 aircraft, a key “Make in India” initiative in the aviation sector, alongside PM Modi. This plant is being established by Tata Advanced Systems in collaboration with Airbus Spain.

Before his arrival, Vadodara was beautifully illuminated in preparation for the visit, highlighting the significance of Sanchez’s first trip to India in nearly two decades.

Planned Activities in Mumbai

Following his time in Vadodara, PM Sanchez will travel to Mumbai. There, he will participate in official events and meet with leaders from trade, industry, think tanks, and the film sector. He is set to address the 4th Spain India Forum, organized by the Spain-India Council Foundation and the Observer Research Foundation. Additionally, he will visit prominent film studios and interact with major figures in the Indian film industry, aiming to strengthen collaboration between the Indian and Spanish media and entertainment sectors.

During his visit, several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements are expected to be signed, which will enhance bilateral cooperation. In a remarkable event in Vadodara, Gujarat, a local wildlife rescuer performed CPR to revive a snake. Yash Tadvi, the rescuer, responded to an emergency call about an unconscious snake in the area. When he arrived, he discovered a non-venomous checkered keelback, about a foot long, lying unresponsive. Despite the snake’s condition, Tadvi remained hopeful it could be revived.

“The snake showed no movement, but I believed it could be saved,” Tadvi explained. Without delay, he began CPR by holding the snake’s neck, opening its mouth, and blowing air into it. He repeated the process for around three minutes. Though the initial two attempts showed no progress, the snake eventually moved on the third attempt.

The entire rescue was recorded on video. The revived snake was later transferred to the forest department for continued care.

In Gujarat’s Vadodara, nearly 40 crocodiles have been rescued from residential areas as floodwaters recede and rehabilitation efforts begin. The city, situated along the Vishwamitri River, saw a surge in crocodile sightings due to the floods, which led these animals into residential neighborhoods.

During the ongoing rescue operations, a video of two men transporting a crocodile on a scooter has gone viral. The men, Sandeep Thakor and Raj Bhavsar, are known for their animal rescue efforts in Vadodara’s Manjalpur area. In the video, one man rides the scooter while the other holds the crocodile horizontally. They were heading to the forest department office to hand over the crocodile.

Agneeshwar Vyas, Deputy Conservator of Forests for Vadodara’s Social Forestry Division, reported that out of the 40 crocodiles found in residential areas, 33 have been released back into their natural habitat, five are at a rescue center, and two died accidentally. He explained that rescuing crocodiles is challenging because they cannot be tranquilized and must be physically restrained due to their strength and carnivorous nature.

The forest department, alongside NGOs and volunteers, has been working to manage these rescues. Vyas noted that while crocodiles are being relocated, other animals such as snakes and turtles are also being rescued from nearby areas.

In Ahmedabad’s Godhra, rescuers have also dealt with crocodiles found at a market on the highway. The state is gradually recovering from the floods, with cleanup efforts underway, road repairs, and measures to prevent disease outbreaks.

In the video, local residents could be seen standing on the side of the road, in front of the shops that lined the street, watching the bulldozer drive by. The foreigners, wearing backpacks and holding onto the ripper’s edge for support, were being transported through the flooded streets.

The heavy rainfall led to an acute flood situation in several districts of Gujarat, with Vadodara being the hardest hit. Some areas of the city were submerged under 10 to 12 feet of water. People stranded in their houses and on rooftops in Vadodara were rescued and relocated to safer places by teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and three columns of the Army, which were deployed to conduct rescue operations in the affected regions.

The deep depression over Gujarat that brought days of heavy rain and thundershowers intensified into a cyclone, named Cyclone Asna, off the coast of Kachchh and the adjoining areas of Pakistan, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to PTI, over 18,000 people have been relocated, and 1,200 were rescued from various flood-affected areas. The floods have claimed around 26 lives as of Friday. The Indian Air Force and other disaster management agencies continue their rescue and relief operations, with the Army using helicopters to rescue people and evacuate them to safer locations.

Vadodara Man Loses Rs. 50 Lakh Audi And Other Cars To Heavy Rain

In a situation that once again brings attention to the failing infrastructure in Indian cities, a man from Vadodara claims to have lost three cars due to severe waterlogging following heavy rainfall in his neighborhood. The Vadodara resident took to Reddit to share images of his cars submerged in several inches of water.

“There’s nothing left to live for anymore. All the three cars mentioned in my flair are now gone,” the heartbroken car owner posted on Reddit.

According to his account, a spell of heavy rain overnight caused significant damage to his vehicles, which include an Audi A6, valued at over Rs. 50 lakh, a Ford EcoSport, and a Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.

The Reddit user also revealed that this is the third time he has experienced such a loss, having previously lost two other cars to waterlogging in a different residential society. When asked about the possibility of salvaging the vehicles, he responded: “There is 8 to 10 feet of water outside. No one can come in [to tow the cars] till the water goes down.”

He further refuted claims that the damage occurred because the cars were parked on the street, clarifying that they were parked inside his bungalow within a gated society.

“I stay in a 5BHK bungalow in a society with 85 houses. We have three car parkings per house. Water has seeped 7 inches into my house and almost 4 feet outside my house. What could I have done?” he questioned, adding, “The whole city has been affected.”

Man Sentenced For 20 Years For Raping Minor Niece

A Special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) court in Vadodara has sentenced a 24-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping his minor niece in a village near Vadodara city in 2022, despite the victim and her parents turning hostile during the trial.

The court described the victim as a “tutored witness” due to her familial connection with the accused and based its judgment on medical evidence and the “demeanor” of the accused. According to the 56-page order delivered by Special POCSO Judge Priyanka Agarwal, even though the victim and her parents became hostile, the court could not merely be a “spectator.” Therefore, it relied on the medical and corroborative evidence, which were “against the accused.”

The POCSO court awarded the victim Rs 6 lakh in compensation, stating, “It is settled law that corroborated part of evidence of a hostile witness regarding commission of offence is admissible… Merely because a witness deviates from the statement made in the FIR, the evidence cannot be held to be totally unreliable… If a witness becomes hostile to subvert the judicial process, the court shall not stand as a mute spectator and every effort should be made to bring home the truth. Criminal justice system cannot be overturned by gullible witnesses who act under pressure, inducement or intimidation…”

Considering the medical evidence presented during the trial, the court remarked, “The victim can be termed a tutored witness as she is following what she has been taught by her family. The victim and the accused are related to each other and, therefore, the victim’s statement is (distorted), but the victim has (previously) recorded a statement under CrPC 164 and stated the facts. Moreover, medical evidence as well as the demeanor are also against the accused.”

The court highlighted the accused’s “revealing” demeanor during the trial, particularly when asked why the victim “feared his presence, and requested to turn off the screen when it displayed his picture.” The accused responded indifferently with, “This is not true.” The court noted, “The conduct of the accused can be gauged from the fact that the victim has come to the court, escorted by the lawyer of the accused, and accompanied by her mother and grandmother, who is the mother of the accused. It proves that the accused has ‘won over’ the prosecution witness…”

In April 2022, the prosecution stated that the accused lured the victim with chocolates to a deserted area while she was collecting wildflowers with her friends. The friends returned home and informed the victim’s mother about the incident.

The court examined 16 witnesses, including five children related to the victim and the accused, and reviewed 42 pieces of documentary and circumstantial evidence.

Chaos In Delhi-Vadodara Flight Due To ‘Bomb Note’ Found In Toilet

In another instance of a Bomb scare or threat, panic ensued among Air India passengers, going from Delhi to Vadodara flight on Wednesday.

In a flight, the note reading “bomb” was discovered on a tissue paper in the airplane’s restroom. Thus, causing panic among people.

According to one official, the aircraft was getting ready for take-off when this note was discovered.

Later after much panic, the Central Industrial Security Force and the Delhi Police were informed about this matter. After their arrival in the scene, they requested the passengers to deboard flight.

Eventually, the flight was searched. But nothing suspicious was found. Then, as a safety measure, the passengers were given another flight.

Following this incident, Air India issued a statement and said, “A specific security alert was detected on Air India flight AI819 scheduled to operate from Delhi to Vadodara on 15 May 2024 just before departure. All passengers were safely deboarded, following the necessary protocol, and the aircraft was taken to a remote bay for mandatory checks by security agencies.”

Later Air India further said, the passengers and crew’s wellbeing are of utmost importance to them. Their colleagues ensured that the inconvenience was minimized due to the unexpected disruption.

Tragic Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway collision claims 10 lives

A tragic road accident on the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway near Nadiad town in Gujarat’s Kheda district resulted in the loss of at least 10 lives. Reports indicate that a car collided with a parked tanker on the expressway, leading to the fatalities. Superintendent of Police Rajesh Gadhvi stated that while eight individuals died at the scene, two others succumbed to their injuries after being taken to the hospital.

The incident occurred due to a technical fault with the tanker, causing it to be parked on the expressway. The collision with the car carrying 10 passengers resulted in immediate casualties and significant traffic disruptions along the 93-kilometer-long stretch of the expressway.

Authorities swiftly responded to the accident, with the civil administration working to retrieve the bodies from the vehicle and contact their relatives. Additionally, teams have been mobilized to ensure that the necessary legal procedures are carried out smoothly in the aftermath of the tragic accident.

Bilkis Bano case: SC denies to extend time for surrender of 11 convicts

The Supreme Court denied the convicts’ requests on Friday to extend their deadline for turning themselves in to jail officials in the Bilkis Bano case. Judges BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan’s bench dismissed the applications, ruling that the justifications given by the applicants to request a postponement of surrender and return to custody were without merit.

“The reasons cited by applicants to seek postponement of surrender and report back to jail have no merit in as much as those reasons in no way prevent them from complying with our directions. Hence, the miscellaneous applications are dismissed. Pending applications, if any, also stand disposed,” said the bench.
The time for convicts to surrender will expire on January 21.

With reasons including health concerns, taking care of elderly parents, the approaching harvest of crops, and other matters, the 11 prisoners in the Bilkis Bano case have petitioned the supreme court for an extension of time to turn themselves in before the jail authorities. The Gujarat government pardoned the prisoners involved in the 2002 Godhra riots, which resulted in the gangrape of Bilkis Bano and the murder of her family members. Despite receiving a life sentence, they were freed in August 2022 after serving 14 years.

On January 8, the Supreme Court struck down the Gujarat government’s order granting remission to 11 convicts.
It had quashed the Gujarat government’s remission order, by which convicts were released pre-maturely, and asked them to surrender before jail authorities within two weeks.
The bench had held that the Gujarat government was not competent to pass the remission orders but the Maharashtra government.

Communal clashes fuelled by Diwali firecrackers in Vadodara

At least 20 people were detained following a communal altercation over the setting off of firecrackers for Diwali at Panigate in Gujarat’s Vadodara early on Tuesday.

“There was some misunderstanding between groups of Hindus and Muslims that led to the clash. The situation is under control,” said Vadodara police commissioner Shamsher Singh.

There were no reports of any significant injuries in the altercation that occurred at about 12:45 am on Tuesday, according to K K Makwana, an inspector at the Panigate police station.

“A sky-rocket cracker hit a motorbike and led to clashes between the two groups. The vehicle was damaged after catching fire. A stone-throwing incident was reported, and police are investigating it. About 20 people have been arrested so far.”

According to Makwana, one person is accused of throwing a petrol bomb at police officer from a building. Further investigation is underway.

On October 3, 40 individuals were detained following conflicts between Muslim and Hindu groups over the raising of flags close to Savli in Vadodara. They were released, and the flags were taken down.

Gujarat: Vadodara police detains 13 people after clash during Ganesh Puja procession

In connection with a clash that erupted during a Ganesh Puja procession a total of 13 people have been detained. The incident took place in the Panigate area in Gujarat’s Vadodara on Monday.

The police on Monday said, currently the situation is peaceful. Meanwhile, the investigation by the police has started.

“Clash erupted between two groups during a Lord Ganesh procession in Vadodara yesterday. The situation is peaceful in the Panigate area. I appeal to the public to not pay heed to rumors. Police are investigating the matter,” Chirag Kordiya, Joint Commissioner of Police, Vadodara Police said.

Earlier this year, on the occasion of Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti in several parts of the country clashes, broke out between two communities.

Moreover, on 16 April 2021 clashes broke out between Jahangir Puri in New Delhi including in the state of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti.

However, during the clashes stones were pelted at devotees in which several people got injured in several states.
