This Man Did It!

<excerpt>Pakistani entrepreneur Waqas Hassan’s legal transit through India has gone viral. Stopping in Mumbai during a layover, he shared his experience online, revealing that Pakistani travelers can transit through Indian airports without a visa if they stay inside the terminal.
</excerpt>

Is it possible for a person from Pakistan to enter India without a visa? Though not very likely under stringent travel guidelines between the nations, Waqas Hassan, business owner in Pakistan was able to disprove it—legally, at that.

In his short stint in Mumbai, Hassan tasted local delights, such as the city’s iconic vada pav, and even shopped for souvenirs. Describing the experience as “pretty fun,” he posted his experience on social media, generating curiosity and controversy. His account has since been viral, generating such questions: How did he get into India without a visa?

Waqas Hassan’s Mumbai Layover

Waqas Hassan, the founder of AI company AiForAll, was on a journey from Singapore to Saudi Arabia when he booked an IndiGo flight with a six-hour layover in Mumbai.

“This time I’m flying from Singapore to Saudi Arabia. And currently, I’m in Mumbai,” Hassan said in an Instagram video, as he walked through the airport terminal.

Hassan explained in his video that Pakistani tourists are allowed to transit legally through India visa-free, but only if they stay within the airport. They need to purchase a single-ticket flight, though, because self-check-in is unavailable for Pakistani passport holders.

Despite the brief stay, Hassan made the most of his time—relaxing in an airport lounge, picking up souvenirs, and savoring Mumbai’s famous street food. He enjoyed a plate of vada pav with cutting chai, describing the experience as “pretty fun.”

His Instagram caption humorously read, “I travelled all the way to Mumbai on a Pakistani passport just to have vada pav.”

The ‘Slight Risk’ in Booking the Ticket

Hassan agreed that, though there was a legal transit alternative, he at first did not want to buy the ticket.

“I have been travelling for 15 years. Nobody told me that we [Pakistanis] can transit through India. So when I booked this ticket, there was a slight bit of risk involved as well,” he recounted.

Even Mumbai airport staff was surprised to have his passport in their hands.

“When I gave them my passport at the airport, they also looked at me in surprise. They said not many Pakistani people do this, so it was a new experience for them as well,” Hassan remembered.

While Pakistani citizens can travel to India with a visa, this can prove difficult to get because of political tensions and security issues. Consequently, tourism between the two neighboring nations is uncommon.

So why did Hassan opt for a flight with an Indian layover? Indian airlines, he says, have some of the best deals available on flights between the East and the West, so his Singapore-to-Saudi Arabia flight was a good-value option.

Symbolic Journey Amid Tense Relations

Although Hassan’s stopover in India was short-lived, his tale has come to represent the larger discussion regarding India-Pakistan travel bans. For some, it speaks to the cultural and historical connections between the two countries, which tend to be dwarfed by political tensions.

With his lawful transit and social media evidence, Hassan has brought to light a generally underappreciated travel option—one that certain Pakistanis might now take into consideration when planning foreign travel.

While a complete relaxation of visa restrictions shortly is doubtful, such times provide hope for a world where borders do not limit common experience. Until that time comes, as Hassan demonstrated, sometimes even an airport layover can be a powerful message.

</excerpt>

Bollywood actress Shraddha Kapoor left everyone’s jaws dropped when she posted a night-time picture of her vada pav outing on Thursday. The actress had tagged her boyfriend Rahul Mody in the post and left fans shocked, as rumors about their breakup had been doing rounds for a few months.

Shraddha shared an Instagram story in which she can be seen holding two vada pavs inside a car on the streets of Mumbai. She captioned it, “May I always bully you to take for vada pao @modyrahulmody (sic).”. Fond of food, Shraddha has many times shown love for street food, making this a warm moment for the fans.

Shraddha Kapoor’s story

Is This Reunion?

The picture left their fans in confusion as to whether Shraddha and Rahul had ever broken up, or they were still not. One fan wrote, “I am so happy to see them back together,” whereas another said, “I wrote somewhere that they are each others’ lobsters. They will get back together soon.”

Going back in August, Shraddha had apparently unfollowed Rahul on Instagram amidst Stree 2 promotions and so had his family members; there was also buzz on how it may be because of the couple’s reported break-up.

Despite all these buzzes, Shraddha was tight-lipped about her relationship status.
In June, Shraddha surprised the fans by uploading a late night selfie with Rahul and in the caption penned, “Dil rakh le, neend toh vaapis de de yaar.” There is much that adds mystery to it-the ‘R’ pendant she often wears as a necklace was seen. She showed that in pictures and made some speculate about this relationship.

</excerpt>

Swiggy has teamed up with the creators of the upcoming film Singham Again to establish a new Guinness World Record for the largest single-order delivery of vada pavs. The record was set by delivering an impressive 11,000 vada pavs to children from schools supported by the Robin Hood Army, a non-profit organization dedicated to combating hunger through surplus food distribution.

This monumental order was executed using Swiggy’s newly launched Swiggy XL Fleet, consisting of electric vehicles specifically designed for bulk deliveries. The initiative involved collaboration with Singham Again stars Ajay Devgn and director Rohit Shetty. The vada pavs, supplied by the Mumbai vendor MM Mithaiwala, were distributed to various locations across the city, including Robin Hood Army-supported schools in Bandra, Juhu, Andheri East, Malad, and Borivali.

The record-breaking event kicked off at Airport High School & Junior College in Vile Parle, where Ajay Devgn, Rohit Shetty, and Swiggy Co-founder Phani Kishan were present to commemorate the milestone.

“In our 10 years, Swiggy has delivered millions of vada pavs across Mumbai and other cities. Now, we’re going XL by teaming up with Singham Again to set a Guinness World Record for the largest single order of vada pavs,” stated Phani Kishan, Co-founder and Chief Growth Officer of Swiggy. “This event captures Swiggy’s commitment to delivering all types of orders, big or small, and celebrates Mumbai’s iconic street food.”

Rohit Shetty expressed his excitement, saying, “We are pleased to have collaborated with Swiggy for this record-breaking delivery, bringing food to children. Just like Singham’s larger-than-life persona, this initiative aims to achieve something meaningful.”

The successful delivery was made possible by Swiggy’s new XL Fleet, designed for efficient and sustainable high-volume orders. The electric vehicles were manufactured by Omega Seiki Mobility (OSM), while Moeving Urban Technologies Ltd. managed the fleet operations on the ground.

Taking the analysis further, Sachdeva calculated the vendor’s estimated monthly income, arriving at a figure of ₹2.8 lakh. Respect to those who work hard.” Others were impressed by the vendor’s consistent sales, noting, “That’s amazing! The Vada Pav must be delicious.”

Meet The Inventor

<excerpt>Many began establishing their own vada pav stalls, further spreading the dish throughout the city and winning over many fans in the process.
</excerpt>

Mumbai is often recognized by two things: Bollywood and Vada Pav! If you visit the city and do not try the culinary delight being sold around every corner of it, you have missed out. A ‘vada’ wrapped inside a ‘pav’, this simple street food dish became the highlight of Mumbai. But how? What’s so special about this usual item which can be easily made within the parameters of one’s kitchen? And more interestingly, where did it come from…

To understand its origins, one must consider the cultural atmosphere of Mumbai in the 1960s. The South Indian community in Central Mumbai was flourishing, and Udipi restaurants were thriving, making dosa the go-to fast food breakfast. These eateries were predominantly owned by individuals who had recently moved to Mumbai, creating tensions with local authorities and business owners.

This backdrop laid the groundwork for Balasaheb Thackeray to establish the Shiv Sena in 1966, promoting the idea of ‘Maharashtra being for the Maharashtrians’. Ashok Vaidya was among those inspired by this movement, deciding to set up a stall selling poha and batata vadas outside Dadar station—a busy hub for cotton mill workers in Central Mumbai.

How Was Vada Pav Created?

As the tale goes, Vaidya’s stall was positioned next to an omelette pav vendor, another beloved Mumbai breakfast option. Two versions of the origin story exist.

One suggests that he and a colleague experimented by using a pav, inserting a batata vada in the center, adding garlic chutney (because no street food is complete without chutney), and serving it to adventurous customers.

The other version claims that on a particularly hectic day, the omelette pav stall ran out of eggs, prompting Vaidya to offer his vadas as a substitute. Regardless of how it began, the combination quickly became popular, providing a convenient and filling meal for mill workers on the go.

The Journey to Iconic Status

Ashok Vaidya’s triumph not only contributed to his legacy but also inspired others in the community. The 1970s and 80s saw many mill closures, leaving numerous individuals struggling financially. Following Vaidya’s example, many began establishing their own vada pav stalls, further spreading the dish throughout the city and winning over many fans in the process.

Even today, despite the encroachment of Western fast-food chains into India, nothing seems to diminish Mumbai’s affection for vada pav. Its low cost, widespread appeal to Indian tastes, and easy accessibility have solidified its status as a city icon. What began as Ashok Vaidya’s spontaneous creation has become a beloved symbol of Mumbai.

The incident, captured on CCTV, shows the thief picking up the bag as the couple was momentarily distracted. The video has gone viral, shocking viewers and accumulating over six lakh views.

The couple, Dashtrath Babaulal Dhamne, 69, and his wife Jayashree, residents of White Field Society, Manjari, were on their way home after retrieving the gold from the State Bank of India (SBI), where it had been pledged for a loan. They stopped at a vada pav shop on Pune-Solapur road. While Dashtrath was getting food, Jayashree stayed by their scooter. The video shows her inspecting something at the back of the vehicle when a man in a white shirt approaches, grabs the bag, and walks away. Jayashree notices him and begins shouting for help.

Watch the video of the theft here:

The footage has sparked a range of reactions online. Some users speculated that the thief had been following the couple from the bank, waiting for an opportunity. Others criticized the couple for not securing their valuables better:

“They don’t look like random thieves; they must have been following them from the bank itself and took their chance when they got the opportunity,” said one X user.

Another commented, “Stupid people who don’t know how to secure precious things. Will lose one way or another. Who would hang a purse like that if it had so much gold?”

A third user posted, “Leaving gold like this or even a bag like this in the open without any supervision, what result do you expect?”

A fourth wrote, “It was clearly the fault of the couple. How could they be so careless to keep that outside? The wife was even more careless, and the robber was following them. He knew what he wanted to do.”

The stolen bag also contained a mobile phone and bank documents. The thief escaped by quickly getting into a vehicle.

</excerpt>

Vada pav, often referred to as Mumbai’s answer to the burger, is a beloved street food that captures the essence of the city’s vibrant culinary scene. This humble snack, originating from Maharashtra, consists of a spicy potato fritter (vada) sandwiched between a soft bread roll (pav), typically accompanied by tangy chutneys and a fried green chili. It’s a dish that has transcended its street food origins to become an iconic symbol of Mumbai’s fast-paced life. With its simplicity and bold flavors, vada pav has won hearts across India and even beyond its borders.

But if you’re looking to explore beyond the classic vada pav, here are some innovative twists that bring a new dimension to this street food staple:

Chicken Vada Pav

CHICKEN VADA PAV

If you love the classic combination of curry leaf tadka and spicy chutney but are craving some meat, this chicken vada pav recipe by celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor is for you. Kapoor has reinvented the vada pav by swapping the traditional potato filling with chicken.

Ingredients: Pavs – 8 (slit in half), Chicken mince – 250 gms, Oil – 1 tbsp, Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp, Chopped curry leaves – 6 to 8, Chopped green chillies – 2, Chopped garlic – 1 tbsp, Haldi – 1 tsp, Freshly chopped coriander leaves – 1 tbsp, Salt to taste, Besan – 1 1/2 cup, Red chilli powder – 1/4 tsp, Jeera powder – 1 tsp, Dhaniya powder – 2 tsps, Baking soda – a pinch; Green chutney, Vada pav sukha chutney, Fried green chillies to serve.

Method: Begin by making a tempering with mustard seeds, curry leaves, green chillies, garlic, turmeric powder, and chopped coriander. Mix this with the chicken mince and salt. In a separate bowl, create a semi-thick batter using besan, red chilli powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, salt, and a pinch of baking soda. Grease your hands with oil and shape the tempered mince into vadas. Dip them into the batter and deep fry until crispy and golden. Drain the excess oil. Spread green chutney on the pavs, layer with sukha chutney, and finish with the vada and fried green chillies.

Vada Pav Quesadilla

Vada Pav Quesadilla

For those trying to avoid white bread but still craving the flavors of vada pav, this vada pav quesadilla from Bingo Foodbook offers a healthier alternative while maintaining the dish’s core essence.

Croissant Vada Pav

The croissant vada pav might not have gotten the attention it deserved when it first appeared online in 2021, but it’s an interesting fusion worth trying.

I have died reading Croissant Vada Pav pic.twitter.com/U1EiiB2Pv4

— Sudatta (@iSudatta) February 24, 2021

The flaky croissant serves as the carb element, adding a patty-like texture to each bite, while the potato filling and chutney maintain the authenticity of the vada pav. To make it, simply get vadas and chutney from a vendor and buy a croissant from your favorite convenience store. Slice the croissant, stuff it with the vadas, slather on the chutney, and enjoy the messy, delicious fusion.

Ulta Vada Pav
