While the visit enchanted cultural circles, Delhi and Noida commuters weren’t so delighted. Major highways, especially NH-24, saw humongous traffic snarls on Monday morning owing to increased security and traffic restrictions for JD Vance’s travel.

Delhi Traffic Police had previously put out advisories requesting people to steer clear of roads such as IP Marg, ITO Crossing, Sardar Patel Marg, and Dhaula Kuan Flyover between 9am and 12pm and again between 6pm and 9pm. Illegally parked vehicles were towed and penalized. Diversions were put in place at strategic intersections such as Shanti Path and Tughlaq Road Roundabout, while people were encouraged to use Vande Mataram Marg or public transport.

Luxury Stays in Delhi and Jaipur

The Vance family is currently staying at the ITC Maurya Sheraton in New Delhi, a luxury hotel known for hosting world leaders. The hotel features 411 rooms, 26 suites, and celebrated restaurants such as Bukhara and Dum Pukht.

Vance, Usha Vance and their children are scheduled to visit the iconic Akshardham Temple in Delhi as part of his first official visit to the country.

JD Vance received a ceremonial Guard of Honour as he arrived at Palam airport for his first official visit to India.

Hoardings of Vice President Vance were also put up near Palam airport, ahead of his arrival today.

Vice President Vance is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi today. A formal meeting between Vice President Vance and Prime Minister Modi is scheduled for 6:30 pm at the Prime Minister’s official residence, 7, Lok Kalyan Marg.

Their discussions can be focused on strengthening economic, trade, and defence cooperation between the two nations.

Following official meetings, the Vance family is set to visit Jaipur and Agra. Vice President Vance will travel to Jaipur on Tuesday. On April 23, he is scheduled to visit Agra.

Vance’s visit to India will conclude on Thursday, April 24, with his departure from the country at 6:40 am.

The visit is also crucial as all relevant issues between India and the United States will be discussed during the upcoming visit of US Vice President JD Vance from April 21 to 24, which is expected to strengthen bilateral ties further, said Randhir Jaiswal.

During the weekly media briefing last Thursday, when asked about the possibility of tariff discussions, Jaiswal said, “We have a comprehensive strategic global partnership, when you have that level of partnership with any country… obviously you will discuss all relevant issues…”

He added, “Of course our relationship is such that we are doing anything that is part of our human endeavour from part of our bilateral engagement … so all these bilateral issue will be discussed and we are very positive that the visit will give a further boost to our bilateral ties.”Jaiswal also highlighted the ongoing discussions between India and the US regarding a potential trade agreement. “We are talking to the US side so that a bilateral trade agreement can be done,” he said.

The US has changed its diplomatic strategy in Greenland after mass protests against then-President Donald Trump’s contentious bid to “buy” the autonomous Danish region. As a backlash, Washington has called off Second Lady Usha Vance’s scheduled visit to the capital city of Greenland, Nuuk. Vice President JD Vance will instead head the delegation, and the visit will be limited to only the American military base at Pituffik.

Greenlanders Spurn Trump’s Takeover of Greenland

The US takeover of Greenland has sparked anger among its people, with mass protests erupting throughout the Arctic nation. Greenlanders have outrightly spurned Trump’s offer, stating that they will “never” be part of the US. Usha Chilukuri Vance, the wife of Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate, has a 96-year-old great-aunt in southern India who is celebrated in local media as the country’s oldest active professor.

The family of U.S.-born Vance is known for its academic achievements, particularly Shanthamma Chilukuri, who still commutes 60 km (40 miles) most weekdays to teach physics at a university. “Most of our family is academically strong, and education has always been a top priority,” Chilukuri told Reuters over the phone from Visakhapatnam.

Usha Vance, 38, made her debut on the U.S. national political stage on Wednesday when she introduced her husband, U.S. Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio, at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

“I got to know about Usha’s husband being named as a vice president candidate and of course we are happy as a family,” Chilukuri told Reuters by phone from the city of Visakhapatnam.

In his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” Vance describes his wife as a “supersmart daughter of Indian immigrants” whom he met at Yale Law School.

Usha Vance’s parents relocated to the U.S. in the late 1970s and currently teach engineering and molecular biology in San Diego.

While Usha Vance attended Yale and Cambridge, her father and grandfather both taught or studied at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), India’s top engineering college. Her younger sister works as a mechanical engineer with a semiconductor company in San Diego, and her aunt is a medical professional in Chennai, India.

The family hails from a village called Vadduru in Andhra Pradesh but moved to Chennai when Usha Vance’s paternal grandfather, Ramasastry Chilukuri, began teaching at the IIT there around its establishment in 1959, according to family members. The IIT now has a student award named in Ramasastry’s memory, honoring his contributions as a physics professor.

The family, practicing Hindus, is also deeply religious.

Shanthamma Chilukuri mentioned that many family members are well-versed in ancient texts like the Upanishads and Vedas. She herself has authored a book on verses from the Bhagavad Gita, one of Hinduism’s holiest scriptures.

Senator Vance mentioned in a June interview with Fox News that his wife played a key role in helping him “re-engage” with his Christian faith.
