These diverse items show how McDonald’s tailors menus to local tastes worldwide.
</excerpt>

McDonald’s has spiced up its U.S. breakfast line, launching three new options on Wednesday: the Spicy Sausage McMuffin, the Spicy Egg McMuffin, and the Spicy Sausage McMuffin with Egg.

The Spicy Egg McMuffin gives a spicy twist to the classic favorite, featuring a fresh egg, Canadian bacon, melted cheese, and spicy pepper sauce on a buttery English muffin. At the same time, the Spicy Sausage McMuffin with Egg turns up the heat with hot sausage, melty cheese, a fresh egg, and spicy pepper sauce stacked on a toasted English muffin. Rounding out the lineup is the Spicy Sausage McMuffin, with hot sausage, melty cheese, and spicy pepper sauce on a toasted English muffin, all of it meant to crank up the flavor.

This is in addition to McDonald’s ongoing efforts to modify its menu to suit global tastes. In various countries, the fast food giant provides local specialties that are consistent with regional tastes:

United Kingdom: Bacon Roll – A simple British classic consisting of back bacon wrapped in a soft roll, served with either brown sauce or ketchup.

United States: The Big Arch Burger – Two Irish beef patties with white cheddar, crispy onions, and Big Arch sauce on a poppy-sesame bun for a filling American choice.

India: Veg Pizza McPuff – A cheesy, crispy pastry filled with vegetables and pizza-like masala sauce.

Canada: Poutine – The classic Canadian comfort food in McDonald’s format, with fries topped with cheese curds and rich gravy.

Japan: Ebi Filet-O – A crispy shrimp burger patty served with creamy sauce and lettuce on a soft bun.

Saudi Arabia: McArabia Chicken – Chicken grilled and served in Arabic pita bread, served with garlic sauce and fresh vegetables.

Malaysia: Curly Fries – A seasoned, crispy alternative to regular fries, these golden curls are a fan favorite limited-time offering.

New Zealand: Kiwiburger – A towering construction that boasts beetroot, fried egg, and all the characteristic Kiwi flourishes.

By continuing to adapt to its offerings, McDonald’s continues to appeal to local tastes and introduce additional layers of excitement to its traditional menu.

</excerpt>

The Trump administration has sanctioned Francesca Albanese, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, in a move that is viewed as part of a wider crackdown on Israeli critics of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

The State Department imposed the sanctions on Wednesday, following Albanese’s vociferous criticism of Israel’s conduct of the war and her calls for the application of international pressure, including sanctions, against Israel. Albanese is an Italian human rights lawyer who has charged Israel with genocide in Gaza charges that both the US and Israel have flatly rejected.

Albanese has also called on world governments to bring Israel to book and endorsed the International Criminal Court’s indictments of senior Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. She also issued a report identifying major American corporations allegedly supporting Israel’s military campaign.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio justified the sanctions by saying: “Albanese’s campaign of political and economic warfare against the United States and Israel will no longer be tolerated. We will always stand by our partners in their right to self-defense.”

The US mission to the UN had earlier demanded Albanese’s ouster, blaming her for “anti-Israel bias” and “virulent anti-Semitism.” In spite of heavy lobbying, the UN declined to remove her from her position.

The sanctions are part of a broader Trump administration push to crack down on criticism of Israel’s war in Gaza, which opened following Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attacks that killed approximately 1,200 in Israel. More than 57,000 Palestinians have since been reported killed by Gaza’s health ministry.

Earlier this year, U.S. officials started detaining and deporting pro-Palestinian protesters, including university staff and students.

In a recent post, Albanese declared: “We must stop this genocide. No one is safe until everyone is safe.”

Rates range from 20–30%, with implementation set for August 1.
</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump ramped up his administration’s tariff attack on Wednesday by releasing new trade notices against seven more nations, threatening import tariffs that will go into effect on August 1. The latest targets are the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Brunei, Algeria, Libya, Iraq, and Moldova, as per an AFP report.

The letters specify rates between 20% and 30%, backing up Trump’s overall policy of relying on trade pressure to get bilateral agreements. Some countries experienced modified rates from previous offers Sri Lanka and Iraq both had their rates decreased to 30% while the Philippines had its tariff rise from 17% to 20%.

The action follows an identical round of letters published earlier this week and is part of a rapidly expanding list of more than 20 countries including key allies Japan and South Korea that have been given tariff notice. The first tranche of tariffs, which were introduced in April as part of a 10% base rate on most trading partners, was pushed back to August 1 to give room for talks.

At a public event, Trump defended the tariffs as “common sense,” citing trade imbalances and a need to “rebalance” relationships. He said a letter to Brazil was also in the pipeline and hinted that talks with the European Union could conclude soon. “We’re probably two days off from sending a letter to the EU,” Trump said.

EU officials confirmed that talks were under way and were optimistic an agreement would be reached. Trump meanwhile signaled additional tariffs, including a 50% tariff on copper and as much as 200% on pharmaceutical imports, although manufacturers would have a transition period to move production elsewhere.

With legal challenges to the tariffs ongoing in US courts, Trump’s hardline trade agenda gains no momentum, with additional nations preparing for economic pressure.

Locals called it a ‘massacre’. Since Hamas’s October 2023 attack that killed 1,200, Israel’s offensive has left over 57,000 dead in Gaza, mostly civilians.
</excerpt>

Gaza’s civilian defence agency said Wednesday that 20 individuals, including at least six children, were killed in two Israeli overnight air strikes. The first attack struck a tent that was a temporary home for displaced residents in Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza, just after midnight local time (2100 Tuesday GMT). A second attack followed shortly thereafter, striking a camp in the north.

When contacted by AFP, the Israeli military indicated that it was investigating the reports.

Strikes as Netanyahu Visits US

The attacks were made as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sat down with US President Donald Trump in Washington, where they addressed the current operation against Hamas in Gaza. After their meeting, Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s goals: the liberation of all hostages seized during the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, and the elimination of Hamas’s ‘military and governing capabilities’.

Casualty Details and Eyewitness Accounts

On Tuesday, Gaza’s civil defense agency reported that 29 had been killed in Israeli airstrikes across the enclave, most of them displaced by nearly 21 months of fighting.

Bassal detailed that the initial air strike on Wednesday killed 10 family members from the same family who were seeking shelter in the Al-Mawasi district of Khan Yunis. The second strike targeted Al-Shati camp, which is located close to Gaza City, injuring more than 30 individuals. The casualties were two separate families, he continued.

40-year-old Zuhair Judeh said the effect of the explosion on Al-Shati: “The explosion was huge, like an earthquake. It destroyed the house and a number of the surrounding houses. The martyrs’ bodies and remnants were scattered,” referring to it as ‘a horrific massacre’.

Abeer al-Sharbati, 36, who had been in a nearby tent with family members, described the bombing as ‘horrible’. She said, “You don’t know when or why they’ll bomb you. We have nothing to do but to leave ourselves in the hands of God.”

Some individuals were missing and feared trapped under debris, residents said.

Because of limitations on media access and reporting in Gaza, AFP could not independently confirm numbers of casualties and other information relayed by parties to the conflict.

Wider Context of the War

Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel killed 1,219, mostly civilians, by an AFP count based on Israeli official data. Of the 251 hostages kidnapped that day, 49 are still in Gaza, of whom 27 are said to be dead by the Israeli military.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign has taken at least 57,575 lives in Gaza, most of them civilians, according to the enclave’s Hamas-run health ministry figures, which are deemed credible by the United Nations.

Mexico issued a warrant in 2023 for organized crime and arms trafficking, which his lawyers strongly deny.
</excerpt>

Mexico’s attorney general’s office has stated that a court so far rejected attempts by boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr to evade arrest if deported from the United States, where he is currently detained for suspected involvement with drug trafficking.

Attorney General Alejandro Gertz, during a press conference on Sunday, disclosed that Chavez’s lawyers ‘have submitted us five or six injunctions. to have him released as soon as he sets foot in Mexico’. These, though, were rejected because Chavez “hasn’t yet been turned over to the Mexican authorities,” said Gertz.

The ruling on Chavez’s deportation would be made at an immigration hearing, which his defense attorneys claim is to take place on Monday.

Arrest and Charges

Chavez, who is 39 years old, was arrested last Wednesday in Los Angeles after U.S. authorities found him to be in the country unlawfully. After his arrest, American authorities declared on Thursday that they were proceeding with his ‘expedited removal’, also citing criminal charges he has pending in Mexico.

Mexico’s attorney general’s office verified following his arrest that a warrant is outstanding for Chavez since 2023 in relation to ‘organized crime and arms trafficking’. Chavez has also been charged with ties to the Sinaloa cartel, one of six Mexican drug trafficking organizations that have been designated as terrorist groups by the U.S.

Defense Response and Career Decline

His defense attorneys have denied all charges, claiming that the arrest is meant to ‘terrorize the community’ as part of larger crackdowns against illegal immigrants.

Chavez was arrested just days after his one-sided loss to YouTuber-turned-brawler Jake Paul in a cruiserweight bout in front of a sold-out crowd at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Estranged in the past from boxing’s upper echelons, Chavez captured the WBC middleweight crown in 2011 and successfully defended it three times. His 54 victories, 7 defeats, and 1 draw are impressive, but his career has also been marked by suspensions and fines for drug test failures.

Chavez, a former world champion and Julio Cesar Chavez’s son, has lost his sporting fame in the last few years in addition to increased legal setbacks.

Rescuers are searching for 11 girls and a counselor missing from a Christian summer camp near the Guadalupe River.
</excerpt>

At least 67 individuals lost their lives due to deadly flash floods in Texas, 21 of them children, as rescue operations are ongoing to trace those who are still missing. The disastrous flooding started on Friday after a sudden rain caused the Guadalupe River to overflow in the Hill Country of central Texas.

Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha had reported 59 deaths in his area alone, among them the children. Among the missing are 11 females and a counselor from Camp Mystic, a Christian camp on the Guadalupe River. Travis County authorities confirmed four dead and 13 missing, while others were reported killed in Kendall, Burnet, and Tom Green counties.

Authorities have rescued 850 individuals to date, some who were clinging to trees. Flood advisories were issued by the National Weather Service until Sunday afternoon, cautioning that additional rain could complicate rescue efforts.

President Donald Trump declared a major disaster, invoking FEMA and sending Coast Guard planes to help emergency responders. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem explained that a “moderate” flood warning was issued Thursday, though the forecast underestimated the severity of the storm, say critics.

Others, such as former NOAA director Rick Spinrad, said that reductions in personnel during the Trump administration might have an impact on the National Weather Service’s forecasting ability.

At Mystic Camp, survivors told of scenes of devastation. Cabins were inundated, belongings destroyed, and six feet of mud swirled up to buildings. Children were evacuated by military trucks to safety. Katharine Somerville, counselor at the camp, credited the bravery of longtime director Richard “Dick” Eastland, who died while assisting campers, according to reports.

Congressman Joaquin Castro cautioned about the perils of under-staffed weather services, particularly flash floods. “It could lead to tragedy,” he warned.

As more rain is predicted and many people are still missing, Texas communities are kept on their toes as search efforts remain underway.

Mastermind of $30M US-Canada ‘Grandparent Scam’

<excerpt>Gareth West, arrested in Quebec, ran a $30 million scam deceiving elderly Americans into paying fake bail. Masking as a real estate mogul, he splurged on luxury. Facing extradition, West could get 40 years if convicted in the US.
</excerpt>

The Quebec Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrested Gareth West, who is said to be the mastermind of a colossal ‘grandparent scam’ operation that spanned the US-Canada border.

He currently has charges pending in the US for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, police reports to CBC reported. Here’s a better look at who he is.

Who is Gareth West?

Police have labeled Gareth West as the mastermind behind this sophisticated network of scams. According to CBC, US authorities disclosed he planned a large-scale scheme that fooled old people in 46 states into sending money by leading them to think their grandchildren needed help.

West used individuals who called elders, impersonating grandchildren who were injured or arrested and needed money for bail in a hurry. Victims were told to keep quiet and not discuss the information. Then, scammers would connect them with phony lawyers or agents and organize cash pickups—on occasion utilizing ride-share drivers or couriers.

Successful Businessman Façade

Publicly, West kept up the facade of a successful Montreal-based real estate tycoon. Authorities indicated he financed the ill-gotten gains with luxury cars, upscale homes, and expensive vacations.

Only last month, the CBC reported police tried to arrest him in March at a home in Burlington, Ont., but found the property under construction. West had been in temporary residence nearby and escaped before police reached the scene.

Before this, the RCMP, together with US Homeland Security, the IRS, and police in the area, arrested 23 other individuals linked to the case. West and one accomplice, Jimmy Ylimaki, however, had been evading capture.

A $30 Million Fraud

US authorities estimate that this scam bilked more than $30 million out of old victims. West faces up to 40 years in prison if he is convicted in the US. According to an Economic Times report, he will appear before a Quebec judge on Saturday, which may initiate the extradition process.

At the same time, authorities and senior advocacy groups are calling on people to remain alert. They say that if a person receives an unsolicited call saying they need money and that a relative is in difficulty, the best thing to do is hang up, check with family, and report the matter right away.

Rescue efforts continue as rising waters, fallen trees, and power outages batter communities.
</excerpt>

Violent flash floods caused by torrential rains have killed several people in Texas and New Jersey, with rescue crews scrambling to save people trapped in the midst of widespread destruction.

It rained heavily overnight in Texas, with as much as 10 inches (25 cm) of rain piling up in central Kerr County, overloading the Guadalupe River and causing it to overflow. The torrent claimed the lives of several people, according to a confirmation by Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly. Precise numbers are however not available as identification process continues. “Most of them, we don’t know who they are,” declared Kelly, adding that one victim was discovered with no clothes on and no identification.

Dozens of individuals have been rescued by boat, and emergency response continues with an unspecified number still missing. The area, which includes riverfront communities, wildlife habitats, and campgrounds, experienced water levels overflow perilously. In search of Hunt, where the Guadalupe River divides, levels rose 22 feet in two hours. The river gauge broke after reaching 29.5 feet, indicating higher levels.

Kelly acknowledged that the county had no proper flood warning system. “This is the most hazardous river valley in the United States,” he said. Texas Governor Greg Abbott promised residents that state resources were being mobilized to assist.

In the meantime, in New Jersey, three were killed from extreme thunderstorms. Two men, 79 and 25 years old, died in Plainfield when a tree had crashed on their car amid the storm. Plainfield Mayor Adrian Mapp lamented the incident, calling the incident a “sober reminder of nature’s power.”

The city postponed its Fourth of July celebrations to concentrate on clean-up efforts. Hail, toppled trees, and skidding cars contributed to the disruption elsewhere in southern New England.

Forecasters warn that flash floods will develop quickly without warning. “You won’t know how bad it is until it’s right on top of you,” warned NWS forecaster Bob Fogarty.

Allies emphasize unity and continued support for Ukraine.
</excerpt>

US Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich formally took over the reins on Friday as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), reaffirming American pledge to European security in the face of increasing uncertainty surrounding potential US troop withdrawals. The change of command at NATO’s military headquarters in Mons, Belgium, is at a moment of heightened importance as some allies are raising alarm over the Trump administration’s consideration of shifting global military deployments.

Historically commanded by the US since its post-World War II establishment, the post of SACEUR had come under speculation of being reallocated as part of President Trump’s demand for Europe to take more defense responsibility. Although Washington eventually reaffirmed its commitment by nominating Grynkewich, concern remains regarding the future of America’s 80,000-strong military presence in Europe.

“These are consequential times,” Grynkewich said during the ceremony, placing an emphasis on unity and common determination between NATO allies. “The threats against us are only more and more interconnected, but they are no match for the alliance assembled here today,” he added.

Grynkewich, a retired fighter pilot with the call sign “Grynch,” also becomes commander of US European Command in Germany. During his recent Senate hearing, he was upbeat about Ukraine’s prospects for defeating Russia and supported continued aid to Kyiv. But he declined to weigh in on recent US moves to postpone shipments of critical weapons to Ukraine, saying the situation was ongoing.

European leaders, in their promise to boost defense expenditures, have called for gradual shifts in US force posture to prevent exposing weaknesses. The appointment is seen as evidence of continuity and reassurance amid a time of changing threats and complicated military concerns, especially following Russia’s continued aggression.

His predecessor, Army General Christopher Cavoli, was praised for his advisory efforts in aiding Ukraine’s defense and reforming NATO’s strategic thinking.

</excerpt>

United States recalled its highest-ranking diplomat in Colombia as tensions between the two nations increase, with Bogota following suit on Thursday. US State Department said on Thursday it recalled Charge d’Affaires ad interim John McNamara “for urgent consultations” in response to what it termed “baseless and reprehensible statements” issued by high-ranking Colombian government officials.

Though the State Department would not say what comments had led to the move, spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said Washington also had “other measures” in mind to convey its unhappiness with the existing level of bilateral relations.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro responded by saying he would be bringing back Ambassador Daniel Garcia-Peña for consultations over the two countries diplomatic agenda. Petro noted that there was a need to revisit shared priorities such as climate change, counter-narcotics cooperation, and migration policy.

The diplomatic fallout comes on the heels of a series of recent flashpoints between Colombia and the Trump administration. US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, last month attributed Colombian leadership with blame for the attempted assassination of opposition Senator Miguel Uribe, labeling it the result of “violent leftist rhetoric.”

Uribe is in critical condition after undergoing a number of surgeries.

Tensions also erupted earlier in the year when Colombia rejected US military aircraft carrying deported migrants. President Trump retaliated by issuing a threat to impose tariffs and sanctions. The confrontation was ultimately resolved, but the incident further strained ties.

Petro had also forcefully protested against the deportation flights, saying he would never carry out such operations, but highlighting a stark contrast with those of the Nazis on social media.

In spite of increasing tensions, Colombia is a key US ally in the region. Colombia’s top trade partner is the US, with trade valued at $33.8 billion in 2023, helped by a 2006 free trade agreement.

Outgoing Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia confirmed that she remains in touch with Washington until a successor is appointed.

India is a major importer. Russia called Graham a ‘Russophobe’ and questioned if this aids Ukraine talks.
</excerpt>

US President Donald Trump has signed into law a Senate bill that would impose 500% tariffs on countries such as China and India for buying Russian oil and energy products.

Speaking to ABC News Sunday, US Senator Lindsey Graham said that Trump urged him to bring the sanctions bill to a vote. Graham, the leader of this effort for tough new sanctions on Russia, characterized Trump’s support as ‘a big breakthrough’.

Graham told ABC News, “Big breakthrough here. So what does this bill do? If you’re buying products from Russia and you’re not helping Ukraine, then there’s a 500% tariff on your products coming into the United States. India and China buy 70% of Putin’s oil. They keep his war machine going.”

He. said the bill is aimed at putting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate for Ukraine and would also provide Trump with ‘a tool’ by which to do so. Still, Graham said Trump would have the choice whether to sign it into law or not if Congress passes it, saying, “I’ve got 84 co-sponsors on a Russian sanctions bill that is an economic bunker buster against China, India, and Russia for Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine. I think that bill’s going to pass.”

Recent statistics show India playing a leading role in the purchase of Russian fossil fuels. India ranked the second biggest importer of Russian fossil fuels in May 2025, with an estimated import value of €4.2 billion, 72% of which was crude oil.

In the meantime, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reacted on Monday to comments made by Graham, that Russia is well aware of the senator’s attitude. “The views of the senator are widely known to us, widely known to the entire world. He is part of a coterie of inveterate Russophobes. If he had his way, these sanctions would have been imposed long ago,” Peskov explained.

He also asked if the brutal move would even benefit the peace process, saying, “Would that have helped the (Ukraine) settlement (process)? That is a question that those who initiate such events should ask themselves.”

</excerpt>

Two Chinese nationals were indicted in a federal espionage matter for allegedly carrying out clandestine surveillance and intelligence collection activities for the Ministry of State Security (MSS) of China, the US Justice Department revealed Monday.

The two suspects, Yuance Chen, 38, and Liren “Ryan” Lai, 39, face charges of acting as unregistered foreign agents, taking photographs of sensitive US Navy facilities, trying to recruit armed forces personnel, and conspiring to orchestrate clandestine cash drops. The charges were made public in San Francisco federal court.

Chen, who entered the US in 2015 and subsequently became a lawful permanent resident, was groomed as a Chinese asset by Lai since mid-2021, prosecutors allege. Lai, who is based in China, went to Texas earlier this year to direct espionage operations on the MSS’s behalf.

The duo allegedly monitored a Navy recruitment station in California and a Washington state military base, providing Chinese intelligence with photos and videos. The duo also supposedly negotiated how to recruit US Navy personnel and gathered personal information of new recruits, many of whom had Chinese connections.

An FBI affidavit discloses that the two planned a $10,000 cash “dead drop” to another MSS-connected operative as part of a larger scheme to infiltrate US military infrastructure.

“This case reaffirms the Chinese government’s ongoing and aggressive pursuit to infiltrate our military and subvert our national security from within,” said Attorney General Pam Bondi. “We will uncover foreign operatives and hold them accountable.”

The arrests are the latest in a string of US prosecutions against Chinese intelligence operations. Previous cases in recent years have included Chinese nationals collecting military information, such as one near a Michigan base and another two US Navy sailors sharing sensitive information with Beijing.

He rejected US demands, stressed readiness for talks, and dismissed threats against IAEA inspectors.
</excerpt>

Iran’s UN envoy Amir-Saeid Iravani asserted on Sunday that Tehran will not suspend uranium enrichment work, justifying the program as an inalienable right for Iran under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). “Enrichment is our inalienable right,” Iravani explained to CBS News, claiming it is only for peaceful energy purposes.

Though showing a willingness for diplomacy, Iravani denounced Washington’s policy, declaring, “Unconditional surrender is not negotiation.” He further stated that there are presently no talks in the offing as a result of the “improper conditions” created by recent US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear installations.

Responding to allegations of threats against International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors, Iravani dismissed any such threats and indicated that the inspectors are still in Iran but have been withheld from visiting nuclear facilities. “They are safe, but their activities are suspended,” he stated, referring to Iran’s unhappiness with their work.

Reacting to news that Iran can export its stockpile of enriched uranium overseas if a new deal is signed, Iravani said this could be done if Iran is allowed to keep its right over domestic enrichment a stipulation the US has been resisting.

The comments of the ambassador come as mixed analyses of the effect of recent Israeli and US attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites have been made. While President Trump asserted that the strikes had “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear program, IAEA head Rafael Grossi disagreed, asserting Iran’s capabilities are still intact and enrichment can restart in months.

Elsewhere, Iran’s military commander Abdolrahim Mousavi said he was not confident that Israel was serious about the existing ceasefire, threatening to respond with force if hostilities continue.

In the meantime, the White House rejected Iranian allegations that the damage was minimal, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt branding such claims “nonsense” despite reports of intercepted Iranian communications expressing less-than-hoped-for destruction.

The diplomatic standoff remains with both parties dug in on Iran’s nuclear future.

Lacking US relatives and English skills, she was last seen waiting with her phone. Police found no foul play yet and struggle to contact her family in India.
</excerpt>

New Jersey authorities are probing the strange disappearance of a 24-year-old Indian woman, Simran Simran, who disappeared just days after coming to the United States for what was supposed to be an arranged marriage.

The New York Post, citing local police, reported that Simran arrived in the US from India on June 20. Investigators have obtained surveillance video in which she is seen standing and gazing at her phone, apparently waiting for someone. She didn’t seem to be in distress in the last video taken before she vanished, officers said.

Details of Simran’s Disappearance

Simran was last spotted on Wednesday in grey sweatpants, a white shirt, black flip-flops, and small diamond-studded earrings. She was 5 feet, 4 inches tall, weighed about 150 pounds, and had a small scar on the left side of her forehead.

Officials pointed out that Simran has no family in the US and does not speak English, making it difficult for her to be found. Police also said they could not contact any of her family members in India. “At this time, there are no known family members in India to contact to obtain her possible whereabouts,” the Lindenwold police said on Thursday.

Police investigate Potential Motives

Researchers said that as Simran went to New Jersey for an arranged marriage, it is conceivable that she never planned on following through on the wedding and used the trip as an excuse to receive a free trip to the United States.

There has not been any suggestion so far of foul play in her vanishing.

This case comes months after another high-profile missing person incident involving Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student from India. Konanki disappeared in March during a spring break trip to the Dominican Republic. She was an Indian citizen and a permanent resident of the US.

Khartoum denied the charge, as Sudan grapples with famine, war crimes, and the world’s worst hunger crisis.
</excerpt>

United States slapped fresh sanctions on Sudan’s government on Friday, accusing it of deploying chemical weapons in its continued fighting against opposing paramilitary groups. The action follows a formal determination by the State Department in May that Sudan had broken the Chemical Weapons Convention, to which it has been a signatory since 1999.

The charges follow Sudan’s civil war, which in April 2023 broke out between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The US government once blamed the RSF for genocide during the war. In January, it stated that Sudan’s army had used chlorine gas in at least two attacks in 2024, reportedly with the sanction of army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

While Washington has not made public the locations and dates of the attacks, Sudan’s government brushed aside the charges as “baseless” and termed them as “political blackmail.” The sanctions, which were to come into force on June 6, cover US exports as well as financial dealings with Sudan. But humanitarian assistance would be exempted, given that almost 25 million people in Sudan are suffering from acute food insecurity.

Sudan has a past history of purported chemical weapon use. Amnesty International in 2016 accused the military at the time allied with the RSF of conducting chemical attacks on civilians in Darfur, which Khartoum also rejected. The US bombed Sudan’s Al-Shifa pharmaceutical factory in 1998 for suspected connection to chemical weapons and al-Qaeda.

As a result of the 2019 overthrow of long-time leader Omar al-Bashir, the US removed various sanctions. These were restored following a 2021 coup d’etat by Burhan and his then-deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo (Hemedti). Both groups have become more prosperous despite sanctions, as Sudan descends further into humanitarian crisis. The UN estimates more than 10 million internally displaced and famine sweeping across the country.

Washington urges global support, signalling deeper involvement in Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.
</excerpt>

The US State Department on Thursday announced approval of a $30 million funding package for the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), Washington’s first known financial aid to the organization providing emergency relief in the war-torn enclave.

This assistance is merely the latest expression of President Trump’s and Secretary Rubio’s quest for peace in the area,” commented Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott at a press briefing, reiterating the administration’s resolve to relief suffering in Gaza.”.

Although the United States has in the past given diplomatic support to the GHF, this grant marks a first instance where federal funding has been made available to the group that depends on private American military and logistics providers to bring and distribute humanitarian aid to predetermined secure facilities in Gaza.

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) last Friday approved the $30 million grant, according to documents, following a priority directive order from both the White House and the State Department. It has already disbursed an initial $7 million, the documents indicate.

Anonymous sources close to the issue stated that the US can approve more grants of the same value on a monthly basis in the future, based on what happens on the ground and how effective the first funding round turns out to be.

The Biden administration has called on other countries to join in and support the efforts of GHF, highlighting the pressing need for humanitarian aid as violence and instability continue to rage in the area.

The move is made amid the ongoing difficulties in delivering aid to Gaza, which has been riddled with security and logistical concerns. The collaboration of the GHF with private American companies is aimed at avoiding the conventional bottlenecks and extending assistance to vulnerable groups more effectively.

The decision marks a fresh bid by Washington to take the initiative on international relief and reduce tensions in the Middle East through strategic humanitarian intervention.

</excerpt>

The recent US airstrikes against Iranian nuclear facilities have undermined President Donald Trump’s anti-war reputation and rekindled fears in Beijing about the volatility of US foreign policy, according to diplomatic analysts.

The attacks, the US military’s most aggressive non-nuclear against Iran, were met with a retaliatory missile strike against a large American airbase in the area. Although Trump ran on an “America First” agenda and vowed to steer clear of expensive foreign wars, his move has led experts to re-examine how Beijing might respond to such military aggression.

While Trump subsequently declared a ceasefire on social media claiming both Israel and Iran had agreed to peace tensions remained high. Israel conducted further strikes shortly after the announcement, blaming Tehran for a breach of the truce, which it denied.

Analysts contend that the raid might double down on Chinese perceptions of Trump as a volatile and impulsive president who is willing to resort to the use of force. Isaac Kardon of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace stated Beijing might view the US as being more prone to take a military role elsewhere, leading China to double up on defenses around Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Josef Mahoney, a political scientist based in Shanghai, said the strikes debunked the myth that Trump is a peace leader. James F Downes of Hong Kong Metropolitan University commented that the incident could speed up China’s military and strategic planning to prepare against potential future US intervention in Asia.

However, experts like Kardon noted the strategic calculus in East Asia differs significantly from the Middle East, making a US escalation near China less likely.

Still, the strikes may shift China’s diplomatic posture. Analysts believe the episode will reinforce Beijing’s belief in Trump’s erratic approach and could alter how China engages with the US moving forward, especially over sensitive regional disputes.

Over 125 aircraft were involved, causing severe damage and retaining complete surprise.
</excerpt>

A mix of meticulous planning, operational deception, and utmost secrecy allowed the United States to conduct an unexpected attack on Iran’s strategic nuclear facilities, said senior military leaders. The operation, which took place on Saturday evening, entailed a high-tech ploy that deceived Iranian defense and enabled U.S. bombers to attack their targets undetected.

The exercise started with a public diversion: a number of B-2 bombers were observed departing from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, leading to speculation among analysts that the U.S. was planning to launch an overt attack on Iran. But officials went on to disclose this squadron was nothing but a decoy, a part of a larger plan to create a diversion.

Real Strike Group Operates Under the Radar

While the whole world watched the Missouri-based bombers, the strike group in question, seven B-2 stealth bombers had already set off on an 18-hour flight to the east. Under radio silence and mid-air refueling, the planes flew undetected as they drew near Iranian territory. Dubbed the largest B-2 stealth bomber operation in U.S. history, Operation Midnight Hammer was the mission.

As the bombers approached their targets, further layers of deception were put in place. A U.S. submarine fired more than two dozen Tomahawk cruise missiles, while American fighter jets flew ahead to distract and look out for Iranian aerial or missile attacks.

Precision Bombing Hits Iran’s Nuclear Sites

When they arrived at their targets, the stealth bombers dropped 14 GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators each one 30,000 pounds onto three of Iran’s main nuclear sites. Altogether, the Pentagon said that more than 125 U.S. military planes participated in the mission.

This was the second-longest B-2 mission ever flown, exceeded only by our response to 9/11,” said General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “Iran’s fighters never scrambled. Their missile defenses never saw us. We maintained the element of surprise.”

Impact of the Attack

Initial estimates suggest that the attacks inflicted “extremely severe damage and destruction” on each of the three targeted nuclear facilities, although General Caine did not verify that Iran’s nuclear program had been completely dismantled.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was more forceful in his evaluation, however, reporting: “It was clear we devastated the Iranian nuclear program.”

The bold and carefully planned operation underscores the use of deception and stealth in contemporary war, and represents a serious escalation of U.S. military activities aimed at Iran’s nuclear program.

</excerpt>

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian threatened on Sunday that the United States will have to pay for its recent attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites, paving the way for a possible revenge. While speaking with French President Emmanuel Macron, Pezeshkian stated, “The Americans must receive a response to their aggression,” reported Iran’s state news agency IRNA.

Echoing the words, senior advisor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Ali Akbar Velayati, said that the war is far from finished. He threatened that American military bases in the area could now be “legitimate targets” and that any nation that hosts American troops would be in the same danger. “America no longer has a place in the Middle East,” Velayati said, terming the US attack an assault on the “heart of the Islamic world.

Iran’s foreign ministry came out with a strong statement, too. Spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei wrote on social media that Iran would protect its national security and sovereignty “by all necessary means,” condemning the US airstrikes as an “unconscionable act of aggression” by a nuclear power against a non-nuclear state.

The bombing, which hit three key nuclear facilities, has escalated regional tensions. Nevertheless, the Trump administration indicated receptiveness to diplomacy. The Trump administration, through Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Vice President JD Vance, indicated that Washington does not desire war and can re-engage Tehran at the negotiating table.

“All along, this mission has not been and is not about regime change,” Hegseth underscored, while Vance indicated the attacks might squeeze Iran into going back to negotiations.

The meticulously planned US rhetoric demonstrates an attempt to manage the backlash and position for any Iranian revenge in days to come. The Middle East remains tense with diplomatic efforts ongoing.

</excerpt>

As the United States attacked three Iranian nuclear sites overnight under what it labelled ‘Operation Midnight Hammer’, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi inquired of Pakistan if Donald Trump deserved to receive a Nobel Peace Prize for this.

The AIMIM president’s statement comes in the backdrop of the recent US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities as well as Pakistan’s decision to nominate the US President for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

Owaisi Criticizes Pakistan’s Allegiance to Trump

In addition, he criticized Pakistan’s support for Trump and wondered whether they supported him just to witness the strikes against Iran.

Pakistan had nominated Trump for the Nobel Prize, citing his “diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership” during the recent India-Pakistan conflict.

“The US was never an honest broker. Whether it is Iraq, Libya or Palestine. The US is sitting completely silent on the ethnic cleansing taking place in Gaza,” Owaisi told news agency ANI.

He added that Washington’s policy is to only “cover up the crimes of the Israeli government”. Owaisi asked why “no one is talking about a genocide” that is happening in Gaza.

Owaisi Recalls Iraq, Libya Interventions, Blames US Policy

“You went into Iraq, saying they were creating these weapons of mass destruction, and nothing was found over there. You removed Gaddafi in Libya, and nothing happened. Saddam was killed, and Gaddafi was killed. The US policy is only to cover up the crimes of the Israeli government. What is happening in Gaza? A genocide is happening, and no one is talking about it,” the Lok Sabha MP said.

Owaisi also expressed concerns about the possibility of dire consequences for India if there is an all-out war in the Middle East region.

“We should ask Pakistanis if they want Trump to get a Nobel Peace Prize…” Owaisi said, referring to the US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan.

He also mocked Pakistan’s top military leadership and asked whether Islamabad’s Army chief, Asim Munir, had lunch with the US President for this (US strikes on Iran)? “They all have been exposed today,” Owaisi added.

Owaisi Slams Netanyahu, Labels Him ‘Butcher of Palestinians’

US President Donald Trump, in the early hours of Sunday, stated that Washington conducted strikes on Iran’s three nuclear sites.

The AIMIM chief further slammed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling him a “butcher of Palestinians”. “A genocide is happening in Gaza, and the US is not worried about it. This man (Netanyahu), he has butchered Palestinians… He is doing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. History will remember him as the butcher of Palestinians,” he added.

Owaisi also raised concerns over the chances of serious consequences for India if a full-scale war breaks out in the Middle East region.

He cited that over 16 million Indians reside in the Gulf and the Middle East, saying that “if that area erupts in a war, which unfortunately is very likely, then it will have a grave impact on the Indians living there”.

Trump Warns of Greater Force If Iran Retaliates

US President Donald Trump, early on Sunday, announced that Washington carried out strikes on Iran’s three nuclear facilities. Following this, he urged Iran to agree to end the war with Israel.

Later, Trump also warned Iran that any retaliation from Tehran against the US “will be met with force far greater than what was witnessed” on Sunday.

</excerpt>

The United States conducted precision strikes on Saturday against and destroyed, reportedly ‘completely’, three prominent Iranian nuclear facilities: Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow heightening tensions in the burgeoning conflict between Iran and Israel.

Iranian officials, in comments on state TV, confirmed the strikes. Quoting Isfahan governor’s aide Akbar Salehi, the IRNA news agency confirmed the attacks, and said that ‘many residents witnessed attacks near the nuclear centres of Isfahan and Natanz’, and reported hearing a number of explosions in both areas.

Iran’s state television reported that ‘the Islamic Republic had pulled out the three nuclear facilities some time ago’, reducing the possible human damage. The network also minimized the long-term damage, stating, “Trump typically bluffs. How much damage has to be determined. The nuclear industry of the Islamic Republic cannot be wrecked through bombing.”

‘Every US Citizen a Target’

Following the US attack, Iranian state television issued warnings of future retaliation in fierce tones. An IRNA presenter announced that all US military and civilian personnel in the region are now a ‘legitimate target’.

One viral broadcast had a map with US military installations throughout the Middle East, pointing out that ‘majority of these bases were within the fire range of Iran’. Another Iranian host made a stern threat to President Trump: “The battle has just begun, Mr. Trump! Now you speak of peace? We will deal with you in a way that makes you understand the consequences of recklessness,” Iran International said.

Iran’s Atomic Agency Criticizes US Attacks

Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization criticized the attacks, a ‘blatant violation of international law’.

“Relentless attacks by the Zionist enemy in the last couple of days, Iran’s nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan were subjected to a brutal attack at dawn today, a move in blatant disrespect of international law,” said the organization.

They also condemned international monitoring agencies, alleging, “This transgression against international rules has regrettably occurred under the negligence or even collusion of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The enemy of America, via the U.S. president’s official declaration on social media, has taken credit for bombing these facilities. The international community is supposed to denounce these acts of jungle logic and lawlessness and support Iran in exercising its natural rights.”

The situation keeps unfolding as the two sides ready themselves for possible repercussions of the strike.

Using B-2 bombers and GBU-57 bombs, the operation was deemed “very successful” by Trump, who warned Iran of further consequences.
</excerpt>

In a dramatic rise in the long-standing confrontation between Israel and Iran, the United States joined the fight on Saturday, and its military dropped bombs on three Iranian nuclear and military facilities.

US President Donald Trump labeled the mission as ‘very successful’ and assured the public that all aircraft used had departed Iranian airspace safely. The attack was subsequently confirmed by Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization.

Even with the publicized attack, Iranian officials on Sunday reported no release of radioactive material. The nation’s National Nuclear Safety System Center verified through state media that radiation monitors had detected “no signs of contamination” at the attacked nuclear facilities.

What Caused the Escalation?

The US intervention came on the heels of Israel’s June 13 operation, code-named Operation Rising Lion, which saw airstrikes against Iranian military facilities. This is a significant new development in the regional crisis, with American troops actively targeting Iranian targets for the first time throughout this escalation.

What were the Main Targets?

The United States attacked three prominent nuclear facilities in Iran: Natanz, Fordow (also known as Fordo), and Isfahan.

Natanz, about 220 kilometers southeast of Tehran, is Iran’s main uranium enrichment plant. While it was hit by Israeli airstrikes in the past, the complex still enriched uranium up to 60 percent purity—beneath weapons-grade levels, yet extremely sensitive per the International Atomic Energy Agency. The UN nuclear watchdog said that Natanz centrifuges to speed enrichment were largely destroyed in previous attacks.

Fordow, the other large enrichment plant, southwest of Tehran, was the second one attacked. Constructed deep beneath a mountain close to the city of Qom, this facility is estimated to be home to as many as 3,000 centrifuges. Trump stated that the plant was struck with a “full payload of bombs.” He reposted later a tweet from an open-source intelligence community stating, ‘Fordow is gone’.

The third strike targeted Isfahan, a facility that not only has nuclear enrichment capacity but also contains three Chinese-constructed research reactors and ancillary laboratories.

The Munitions Employed

To penetrate Fordow’s deep-buried, highly defended underground bunker, the U.S. allegedly employed six GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOPs), AFP reports. These 30,000-pound bunker-busting bombs are the largest non-nuclear munitions in the U.S. arsenal and were specifically constructed to kill deep, hardened underground targets.

Military officials quoted by AP explained that such bombs are designed to pierce the surface before exploding deep inside, making them perfectly suitable for deeply buried nuclear facilities like Fordow.

Aircraft Used in the Operation

The GBU-57 is deployable and transportable only by the U.S. Air Force’s B-2 Spirit stealth bombers. These bombers have a range of 6,000 nautical miles on a single flight without refueling and are specifically intended to penetrate advanced enemy air defenses while striking well-defended installations.

A number of B-2 bombers were seen leaving their base in Missouri before the attacks, according to flight-tracking agencies and U.S. media reports.

Trump’s Reaction and Warning

After the surgery, Trump made a blunt warning, “There will either be peace or there will be tragedy for Iran.”

In a post on Truth Social, he announced, “We have successfully completed our attack on the three Nuclear facilities in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.” He specifically noted that all U.S. planes had returned safely and asserted that a “full payload of bombs” had been dropped on Fordow.

In another post, Trump described the strikes as a pivotal event: “This is an HISTORIC MOMENT FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ISRAEL, AND THE WORLD. IRAN MUST NOW AGREE TO END THIS WAR. THANK YOU!”

Later, in a televised address, he claimed that Iran’s major nuclear sites had been “completely and totally obliterated.”

President Trump confirmed the strikes, stating key facilities were “completely obliterated” using bunker-buster bombs and 30 Tomahawk missiles.
</excerpt>

In an unusual and daring military action, the United States conducted airstrikes early Sunday against Iran’s nuclear facilities with precision B-2 stealth bombers and bunker-buster bombs.

President Donald Trump, announcing the operation moments after it came to an end, said that bombers were employed to attack three strategic nuclear sites; Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. “The American jets were safely on their way home,” he added, confirming that a complete load of bombs was dropped on the targets, including Fordow.

In a report by The New York Times quoting US officials, the B-2 bombers took off from a Missouri airbase, flew more than 11,400 miles to cover the distance to Iran, and returned after flying a non-stop 37-hour round trip. The aircraft refueled several times in mid-air for the operation.

The US Air Force employed six bunker-buster bombs on the buried Fordow plant, while 30 Tomahawk missiles hit the Natanz and Esfahan targets. Trump said in a media briefing that “Iran’s key nuclear enrichment facilities were completely obliterated” and made a warning: further action will be taken if Iran didn’t seek peace.

What Makes the B-2 Stealth Bomber So Critical?

The B-2 Spirit is one of the most technologically advanced and survivable aircraft in the US Air Force inventory. The aircraft, noted for its stealth technology, is engineered to avoid the most advanced enemy air defenses and strike at all altitudes.

The US military, says Fox News, sent six bunker-buster bombs to specifically knock out the Fordow facility. The B-2 is at present the sole aircraft in the American inventory which can deliver the Massive Ordnance Penetrator, a weapon meant to wipe out targets buried deep. With its cutting-edge design and technology, it can serve as a decisive player in missions that demand deep penetration and high accuracy.

</excerpt>

Japan has canceled a crucial yearly security conference with the United States following the Trump administration’s pressure on Tokyo to sharply increase its defense expenditure, Financial Times reported.

The “2+2” negotiations between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth with their Japanese counterparts, Defence Minister Gen Nakatani and Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, were to take place on July 1 in Washington. The talks were canceled after America insisted on Japan increasing its defence budget to 3.5% of GDP up from a previous request of 3% as reportedly communicated by Elbridge Colby, the Pentagon’s third-highest-ranking official.

A senior US official told Reuters that the session was “postponed” but would not give a reason. Japan’s foreign ministry also denied earlier talks on any particular spending target.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said on Saturday that US Asian allies should take a cue from Europe and target defence budgets of 5% of GDP, pointing to increasing risks posed by China and North Korea.

The action is part of a trend of pressure from President Donald Trump, who in March chastised Japan’s security pact with the US, contending that America is under an obligation to defend Japan while Japan has no reciprocal obligation. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba hit back by declaring Japan’s independence over its defence budget choice.

Trump’s remarks coincided with continued trade tensions, with Washington threatening sharp tariffs on Japanese cars, which are currently under suspension until July 9. Japan is scheduled to participate in the next NATO summit in The Hague, where Trump is expected to renew his demand for greater military contributions from allies.

Although Japan has already doubled its defence budget ceiling from 1% to 2% of GDP in the days of former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, officials are adamant that any future boosts will be decided domestically, not as a result of external pressure.

</excerpt>

The United States is moving B-2 bombers to Guam, two US officials told Reuters on Saturday, amid President Donald Trump’s deliberation on whether to engage the US in Israel’s military actions against Iran during heightened tensions in the Middle East.

Unclear If US Deployment Is Directly Tied to Middle East Tensions

Reuters report further said that it is still unclear if the deployment is specifically linked to the growing tensions in the Middle East.

The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, withheld further information. One of them informed Reuters that no advance orders had been made to shift the bombers beyond Guam. No figure was released on how many B-2 aircraft are being deployed.
As fighting between Iran and Israel entered its second week, both sides continued to launch new attacks, including a new raid on the Isfahan nuclear plant. Trump’s position regarding possible U.S. participation remains uncertain.

The president, rarely in Washington at the weekend, is likely to return to the White House in the evening on Saturday to hold an unspecified “National Security Meeting.”

Trump told Iran on Friday that it had a “maximum” of two weeks to prevent possible U.S. airstrikes, and hinted that a decision could be made before the two weeks he previously suggested.

What Do We Know About US B-2 Bombers?

The US B-2 bomber, which can carry the 30,000-pound GBU-57 bunker-buster bomb, is under scrutiny with the current tensions with Iran. The GBU-57 or Massive Ordnance Penetrator is the sole weapon that is reportedly capable of destroying deeply buried nuclear facilities such as Iran’s Fordow plant, AFP reports.

The GBU-57 is not owned by Israel, Analysts are watching to see if the B-2s will be transferred to Diego Garcia, an Indian Ocean US-British military facility that is strategically well-situated for Middle East operations. B-2s were based there previously until last month before they were replaced with B-52 bombers.

Iran-Israel Tensions Surge Amid US Military Buildup and Nuclear Standoff

At the same time, Israel asserted on Saturday that it had killed a top Iranian commander during ongoing airstrikes between the two nations. Iran replied that it wouldn’t negotiate its nuclear program while threatened. Israel maintains that Iran is close to achieving nuclear weapons capability, while Tehran says it is a peaceful program.

President Donald Trump has indicated he may decide within two weeks whether to involve the US militarily, saying the delay would allow time “to see whether or not people come to their senses.”

Earlier this week, Reuters documented a significant US military buildup, including a multitude of tanker planes dispatched to Europe and fighter jets dispatched to the Middle East. In addition, a US aircraft carrier that was recently in the Indo-Pacific is heading to the region.

The warning escalates tensions amid growing regional instability and casualties.
</excerpt>

Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi rebels have issued threats stating that they would attack US warships and ships in the Red Sea if Washington officially becomes involved in the current conflict between Israel and Iran. The threat was issued on Saturday via a prerecorded video by Houthi military spokesman Brigadier General Yahya Saree.

“If there is American participation in the aggression against Iran with the Israeli enemy, our armed forces will attack US warships and vessels in the Red Sea,” Saree declared, hinting at a possible escalation in an already tense region.

This follows as US President Donald Trump remains in contemplation regarding direct US military intervention in the Israel-Iran war. The conflict, which began on June 13 with Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, has already claimed at least 722 lives, 285 of them civilians, and injured over 2,500, reports a Washington-based Iranian human rights group.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also made a strong warning at an Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) conference in Turkey, saying, “I think that it would be very, very dangerous for everyone” if the US became militarily involved.

Despite pressure from Israel to provide advanced “bunker-buster” bombs to target Iran’s fortified Fordo uranium enrichment facility, President Trump has indicated he will delay a final decision on military involvement for up to two weeks.

The Fordo site, located deep underground, is believed to be largely impervious to conventional airstrikes, leaving only highly specialized US weaponry capable of inflicting serious damage.

As the conflict risks spilling out of Iran and Israel proper, regional players such as the Houthis are positioning themselves to strike back if America gets directly involved fears of a wider regional war in the Middle East.

However, Air Force records show it also honors the WWII-era P-47 Thunderbolt. Officials insist the designation was pre-decided, though timing suggests otherwise.
</excerpt>

On 21st March 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump shocked everyone from the Oval Office by declaring the creation of ‘the world’s first sixth-generation fighter jet’. Accompanied by Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth, Trump revealed the official name of the jet ‘F-47’ asserting, “Nothing in the world comes even close to it. It’ll be known as the F-47. The generals picked the title. It’s a beautiful number.” Hegseth, meanwhile, praised its ‘speed, manoeuvrability and payload’, saying it would be unlike anything ever seen before.

The F-47 Name Sparks Speculation

The title ‘F-47‘ was unexpected, considering that the plane will be succeeded by the F-22. Some wondered if the plane was given that name as a tribute to Trump himself, the 47th President of the United States. Although there seems to be some basis for this assumption, the whole story seems more complex.

To grasp the reasoning behind military airplane designations, one has to refer to the U.S. Department of Defense’s Mission Design Series created during the 1960s. As per a U.S. Air Force memo acquired by Bloomberg, “This system employs letters and numbers to represent identifying features of military aerospace vehicles of direct concern to the DoD.”

In this system, letters define the aircraft’s purpose ‘B’ for bomber, ‘P’ for patrol, etc. then a dash and a sequential number that denotes its design. According to the U.S. Naval Institute, while this sequence normally goes in order, there are ‘many gaps and numerous exceptions to these sequences’ so F-47 is more likely an exception than a rule-based designation.

Tip of the Hat to History and Trump?

Bloomberg discovered more through a Freedom of Information Act inquiry. Records revealed that the F-47 designation was partially driven by a mythical World War II fighter, the P-47 Thunderbolt which earned a fearsome reputation during the war.

Files revealed that the U.S. Air Force’s Chief of Staff, General David Allvin, had placed an “urgent” order for historical information about the P-47. Within hours, scientists gave a detailed account of the aircraft. The P-47, lovingly called the ‘Juggernaut’ or ‘Jug’, was touted by the Air Force as ‘probably the best ground-attack aircraft fielded by the United States’. In the memo, it stated that between D-Day and VE Day in WWII, Thunderbolt pilots destroyed 86,000 railroad cars, 9,000 locomotives, 6,000 armoured cars, and 68,000 trucks.

Thus, though the selection of F-47 might hold some presidential meaning, it equally obviously has its basis in a desire to commemorate a historic warplane.

Was the Air Force Caught Off Guard?

Interestingly enough, when President Trump used the F-47 name in his 11:30 am press conference, both he and Hegseth never made mention of the legacy of the P-47 Thunderbolt. Bloomberg’s report said that the Air Force may not have been ready for public naming.

Emails obtained by the news outlet indicate that after the announcement, a public affairs officer at the Air Force contacted someone in a hurry, typing: “Sir, Request coordination with SECDEF office,” in an email to Lieutenant General Dale White, who is in charge of acquisition and logistics.

But the Air Force insists that the choice to honor the P-47 was done on its own. Asked by journalists, an Air Force spokesman would not comment on the apparent departure from regular naming procedure. “The nomenclature system is in place to have a coherent, not chaotic process of naming systems,” asked one reporter. “Why was it dropped in this instance? And who made that choice?”

The only answer came from Ann Stefanek, the Air Force spokesperson, who issued only this statement, “General Allvin made the decision.” Whether that decision was reached prior or subsequent to Trump’s announcement cannot be known.

Though there is speculation that the F-47 would be named in honor of Trump, official records indicate a dual motive to honor the historical P-47 Thunderbolt and perhaps the 47th president. Less clear is whether the naming was done according to established military procedure or political improvisation.

Targets include Hong Kong shipping firms, individuals, vessels, and companies aiding missile and drone development.
</excerpt>

The Trump administration imposed a fresh round of sanctions on Friday against Iran’s defense capabilities and the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The US Treasury Department stated that it sanctioned eight entities, one ship, and one person for purportedly enabling Tehran’s attempt to acquire sensitive equipment and components utilized in its military activities.

“These actions highlight the United States determination to interfere with Iran’s access to dual-use technology and key components that drive its ballistic missile, drone, and asymmetric weapon programs,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. “Treasury will remain working to undermine Iran’s ability to manufacture and disseminate lethal weapons that threaten regional and global security.”

Among those being sanctioned are two Hong Kong-based shipping firms Unico Shipping Co Ltd and Athena Shipping Co Ltd who have been accused of facilitating Iran’s procurement activities.

In a different statement, the Treasury Department also levied sanctions in connection with counterterrorism initiatives against Yemen’s Houthi rebels. The Houthis, who are aligned with Iran, have been targeted for alleged activities in illegal oil trade and smuggling that are used to finance their operations.

The Houthis-linked sanctions target four people, 12 entities, and two ships allegedly involved in importing and selling oil and other banned commodities to finance the activities of the group. The move is part of an overarching US push to stem the funding lifelines of groups it deems as destabilizing forces in the Middle East.

The Treasury stressed that the designations are intended to starve such groups of access to key resources they need to perpetuate their actions. It reiterated that it continues to intend to take action against those facilitating Iran’s military aggression and the Houthis’ economic activities.

The sanctions follow increased regional tensions and renewed US attempts to pressure Iran and its proxies economically and diplomatically.

On a mission to honor Operation Sindoor, he sent an SOS before being saved and is now stable at base camp.
</excerpt>

Indian mountaineer Shaikh Hasan Khan of Kerala, who was stuck during an expedition to Denali, the highest mountain in North America has been rescued safely. The officials have confirmed that Khan is safe at the base camp and stable.

Khan, an assistant section officer in the Kerala Finance Department, was trapped at Camp 5 of Denali at a height of 17,000 feet after a heavy snowstorm. As his food and water supplies were running low, he made a distress call through a satellite phone, calling for immediate assistance.

In the message, Khan wrote, “Hi, this is Shaikh. I am on an expedition to Mount Denali, the highest point in North America. We are stranded in a bad storm at 17,000 ft in Camp 5. Less food and water to keep us alive. I am here on a mission to hold a banner to congratulate our armed forces for Operation Sindoor. Only God can help us.”

Mission to Honor Armed Forces

Khan embarked on the arduous journey to honor the Indian Army’s Operation Sindoor. He started off on June 4 from Chennai, arrived in the United States on June 6, and commenced his climb on June 10 after a video conference with his parents.

He was accompanied on the climb by a fellow mountaineer from Tamil Nadu. Khan has experience with out-of-the-way climbs. He climbed Mount Everest successfully in 2022 and has summited many other mountains on different continents.

After the rescue, Khan was returned to the base camp of Denali. Authorities indicated that he is recovering well and unharmed. The accident both showcases the danger of high-altitude climbing and the heroism of climbers such as Khan who pursue missions with more meaning.
