</excerpt>

The White House chose not to comment after President-elect Joe Biden was first seen with a mysterious bruise on the top of his hand, sparking concerns about his health. The bruise was again visible on Friday evening when Biden arrived at the White House for a Medal of Honor ceremony, though no cuts were observed on his skin.

According to the Daily Mail, the publication asked a White House spokesperson about the bruise, but they declined to provide any explanation.

The mark became noticeable during a ceremony held by Biden, 82, in the White House’s State Dining Room on Thursday, where he celebrated the record number of federal judges appointed under his administration. Observers quickly pointed out the unusual marks on his left hand, with a coin-sized dark purple patch that appeared to be a bruise, partially covered with makeup.

Netizens react over spots on Biden’s hand

The bruise has sparked a variety of conspiracy theories on social media, including speculation that it could be related to recent intravenous therapy.

“Veins in the back of the hand are the easiest to find,” one person remarked on X.

“Biden was spotted with the same spot on his hand as Queen Elizabeth II had shortly before her death,” another stated.

“IV infusion?” a third user asked.

Meanwhile, some individuals attributed the marks to Biden’s age.

“Isn’t it common for old people to get dark spots on their hands?” one person asked.

“That’s just old people hands dude,” one more noted, while another said, “He’s OLD. Those are AGE spots. Everyone his age has them.”

Mark on Biden’s lip

Biden’s health has garnered renewed attention after The Wall Street Journal published an article on December 19 detailing how his staff managed a “diminished” president during his time in office.

According to the article, Biden’s aides had to repeat simple instructions to him, such as where he should exit while on stage.

Concerns over the bruise on his hand arose just hours after he appeared to have a mark on his lip.

“Biden looked awful,” one X user wrote. “He looked like he may have fallen from his lower lip looking swollen and bruised.”

</excerpt>

US President Joe Biden announced on Friday that he had spoken with the families of those affected by the New Year’s Day truck attack in New Orleans, which resulted in at least 14 fatalities and left dozens more injured. The President also expressed plans to visit the city next Monday to mourn alongside the victims’ families and the community.

The attack took place when Army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar drove a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street, killing at least 14 people and injuring approximately 30 others. Officials revealed that Jabbar had posted videos online prior to the attack, expressing support for the Islamic State (IS) group. He was killed in a shootout with police shortly after the incident.

Authorities have since cleared the crime scene and reopened the iconic Bourbon Street to the public.

Memorials for the victims now adorn the area, with flowers and candles marking the spots where lives were lost. Among the victims were an 18-year-old aspiring nurse, a single mother, a father of two, and a former college football star.

The FBI is investigating Jabbar’s motives and his path to radicalization, although they have found no evidence that he received any external assistance. The agency confirmed that improvised explosive devices were left at the scene but were safely disarmed.

As New Orleans begins its healing process, street performers, football fans, and locals have returned to Bourbon Street, slowly bringing life back to the area.

</excerpt>

US President Joe Biden has inadvertently thrust himself back into the political spotlight just a week before the US Presidential Elections following his comments during a virtual event defending Puerto Ricans, CNN reported on Wednesday.

His remarks, made in response to a comedian’s derogatory comment about Puerto Rico at a Donald Trump rally, have opened a door for Trump to shift focus away from his own controversial campaign tactics. Biden criticised the comedian’s description of Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage,” asserting that the people of Puerto Rico are “good, decent, and honourable.” However, his defence sparked a political uproar, detracting from Vice President Kamala Harris’s key closing speech on Tuesday evening, CNN reported.

“And just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico ‘a floating island of garbage.’ Well, let me tell you something… I don’t know the Puerto Rican that I know… or Puerto Rico where I’m–in my home state of Delaware–they’re good, decent, honourable people,” Biden said during his virtual remarks in a get-out-the-vote call meant to help Harris.

“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters,” Biden said, adding, “His demonisation of Latinos is unconscionable and it’s un-American.”

Must Read: Flash Floods In Spain: Death Toll Reaches 95; Valencia Suffers Major Impact

The White House quickly attempted to clarify Biden’s remarks, stating he was referring to the “hateful rhetoric” at the Trump rally rather than the former president’s supporters. Biden himself took to social media to explain that his use of “garbage” referred to the comments made about Puerto Rico, not to Trump’s supporters, as reported by CNN.

“Earlier today, I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporters at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage–which is the only word I can think of to describe it. His demonisation of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation,” Biden wrote on X.

Biden’s remarks drew immediate parallels to Hillary Clinton’s infamous “basket of deplorables” comment in 2016, which became a rallying cry for Trump and his supporters. In the aftermath, Harris felt compelled to address the controversy on Wednesday, emphasising her belief in representing all voters, regardless of their political affiliations, CNN reported.

“Listen, I think, first of all, he clarified his comments, but let me be clear: I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for,” the Democratic nominee said. “You heard my speech last night and continuously throughout my career. I believe that the work that I do is about representing all the people, whether they support me or not,” Harris said.

“I am sincere in what I mean: when elected president of the United States, I will represent all Americans, including those who don’t vote for me, and address their needs and their desires,” she added.

However, Trump wasted no time seizing upon Biden’s comments. At a rally, he referenced Biden’s words, suggesting they were worse than Clinton’s, and positioned his campaign as one that welcomes diverse support from various demographic groups. The Trump campaign quickly framed Biden’s remarks as indicative of a broader disdain for his supporters, as reported by CNN.

“Wow. That’s terrible. That’s what it says. That’s what it says. So, you have, remember Hillary, she said ‘deplorable’ and then she said ‘irredeemable,’ right? But she said deplorable; that didn’t work out. ‘Garbage’ I think is worse, right?” Trump said.

Joined by Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, Biden acknowledged the lasting impact of this dark chapter in American history.
</excerpt>

In a historic speech, US President Joe Biden apologized on behalf of the nation for the forced assimilation policies inflicted on Native American children through the government-run boarding school system. This policy, spanning from the early 1800s to the 1970s, aimed to erase Native culture by abducting children from their families and immersing them in European settler practices.

“I formally apologize, as president of the United States of America, for what we did,” Biden declared during his speech at the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona, streamed live by the White House. He referred to this as one of the most horrific episodes in American history.

Dark Legacy of the Boarding School Era

The federal government operated over 400 boarding schools across 37 states or then-territories. Thousands of children suffered cultural and physical abuse, with many experiencing forced conversions to Christianity, banned languages, and painful separation from their families. A recent report disclosed widespread instances of physical, mental, and sexual abuse, along with nearly a thousand recorded deaths.

The brutal policy, summarized by the phrase “Kill the Indian, Save the Man,” left scars across generations, as shared by Navajo elder Emerson Gorman, who was taken from his family at age five and forbidden to practice his culture or speak his language.

Deb Haaland: “We Are Still Here”

US Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American cabinet secretary, joined Biden, highlighting the resilience of Native communities despite these traumatic policies. “They failed to annihilate our languages, our traditions, our life ways. Despite everything, we are still here,” Haaland said.

Under Biden’s administration, significant steps have been taken to expand Tribal autonomy and protect sacred Native lands, showing a renewed commitment to support Native American communities.

Rare Apology in US History

Official apologies from American presidents are rare but significant. Biden’s statement joins a small list of past apologies, such as Ronald Reagan’s 1988 legislation compensating Japanese Americans for World War II internment and Bill Clinton’s apology in 1997 for the infamous syphilis experiments on Black men. In 2008, Congress formally apologized for slavery and Jim Crow laws, though no reparations were offered.

This apology also echoes recent Canadian efforts to confront its own legacy of abuse in Indigenous boarding schools. By addressing these injustices, the Biden administration aims to foster healing and recognition for Native communities.

India welcomes the deal, which resolves a long-standing territorial dispute.
</excerpt>

In a landmark agreement, the UK has decided to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos archipelago, including Diego Garcia, to Mauritius. This deal, announced after two years of negotiations, allows the US-UK military base on Diego Garcia to continue operations for 99 years. The decision resolves a long-standing territorial dispute, and India has welcomed the agreement, citing its commitment to decolonization and support for Mauritius.

Strategic Importance of Diego Garcia

The military base at Diego Garcia is critical for the US and UK, providing access to key regions like East Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. The base has played a crucial role in operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Gulf War. Its continuation ensures regional stability at a time when China is increasing its presence in the Indian Ocean.

India’s Role in the Agreement

India, which has long supported Mauritius’s claim over the Chagos Islands, played a key behind-the-scenes role during the negotiations. The agreement, according to India’s External Affairs Ministry, strengthens maritime security in the Indian Ocean, a region of increasing strategic importance.

US and UK Praise the Deal

US President Joe Biden and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy hailed the agreement as a victory for diplomacy and international security. Biden emphasized the base’s vital role in maintaining regional stability, while Lammy called the deal “historic,” ensuring the long-term operation of the base in an “increasingly volatile world.”

A Step Forward for Global Security

The deal not only resolves the legal status of Diego Garcia but also secures continued cooperation between the US, UK, and Mauritius. It also reflects the commitment of these countries to safeguard security and prevent illegal migration routes from the Indian Ocean.

This agreement is expected to have lasting positive impacts on international relations and military cooperation, ensuring that Diego Garcia continues to be a critical strategic hub for decades to come.

</excerpt>

US President Joe Biden addressed the recent Israeli airstrikes on Yemen during a White House press conference on Monday, revealing that he had spoken with both parties involved. He emphasized that his administration supports efforts for a collective resolution, stating, “Spoke with both sides at the outset of the strike. We support the collective bargaining effort. I think they’ll settle the strike.”

The Israeli Air Force (IAF) had recently launched airstrikes targeting Houthi-controlled military sites in Yemen, including power plants and a seaport. These attacks were in response to the Houthis’ recent assaults on Israel. On September 29, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) shared a post on X, saying, “The IAF struck military targets belonging to the Houthi terrorist regime in Yemen in response to their recent attacks against Israel.” The post also noted, “The targets included power plants and a seaport, which were used by the Houthis to transfer Iranian weapons to the region, in addition to military supplies and oil.”

During the press conference, Biden also addressed rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, firmly denying any plans to send additional US troops to the Middle East. When asked if he would send more troops amid the escalating violence, Biden responded with a simple, “no.”

Despite this, the Pentagon had announced on September 29 plans to increase US military presence in the region. Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder stated, “The Secretary has also increased the readiness of additional US forces to deploy, elevating our preparedness to respond to various contingencies. And Department of Defence maintains robust and integrated air-defence capabilities across the Middle East, ensuring the protection of US forces operating in the region.”

Biden also confirmed that he would soon be speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “Yes. I will be talking to him, and I’ll tell you what I say to him when I talk to him,” he said.

</excerpt>

A day after Israel launched its largest aerial offensive in southern Lebanon, which resulted in 558 deaths, including 50 children, and left more than 1,800 people wounded, Hezbollah confirmed the loss of one of its senior commanders. The Iran-backed militant group announced on Wednesday that Ibrahim Mohammed Kobeissi was killed in the airstrike. In their statement, Hezbollah referred to Kobeissi as being “martyred on the road to Jerusalem,” a phrase they often use to describe their fighters who die in Israeli attacks. Additionally, the Israeli military reported that two more commanders from Kobeissi’s unit were also “eliminated” during the strikes.

Fear of Escalation

Israel’s intensified military action against Hezbollah has raised concerns about a further escalation in the nearly year-long conflict between Israel and Hamas. Many fear that the situation could destabilize the Middle East further.

UN Faces Triple Crisis

The UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, is bracing for heightened challenges as Israeli strikes on Lebanon compound the pressure they are already facing in Gaza and the West Bank. Philippe Lazzarini, UNRWA’s Commissioner-General, described the situation as a “triple tragedy.” He explained, “We already have Gaza, we already have the West Bank, so we have two fields of operation which have become active frontlines.”

Heavy Casualties in Lebanon

Lebanese officials reported that Israeli airstrikes over the past two days have claimed at least 558 lives, including 50 children, and injured over 1,800 people. The majority of these casualties occurred in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa region in the northeast, where Hezbollah maintains a strong presence.

Macron Urges Iran to Help Ease Tensions

French President Emmanuel Macron reached out to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, urging Iran to leverage its influence in Lebanon to de-escalate the situation. Macron emphasized that Iran must play a role in calming the rising tensions in the region.

Netanyahu’s Warning to Hezbollah

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu predicted that “complicated days” lie ahead, emphasizing that Israel is not waiting for threats to materialize but is proactively addressing them. In a message directed at the Lebanese people, Netanyahu clarified, “Israel’s campaign is not against you. Hezbollah has been using you as human shields. It placed rockets in your living rooms and missiles in your garage.” He urged civilians to evacuate to avoid being caught in the crossfire.

UK Calls for Immediate Evacuation

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged British nationals to leave Lebanon immediately as the UK prepares for a potential evacuation. In response to the escalating Israeli attacks on Hezbollah, Starmer said, “The most important message from me this evening is for British nationals in Lebanon to leave immediately.”

Biden and World Leaders Warn of War

US President Joe Biden, addressing the United Nations General Assembly, cautioned against the risk of a “full-scale war” in the Middle East and called for diplomatic efforts in both Lebanon and Gaza. However, Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib expressed disappointment with Biden’s speech, criticizing it for not offering a viable solution to Lebanon’s problems.

Protests Erupt in the US

Meanwhile, several protests erupted across US cities, with demonstrators opposing American military support for Israel. In New York City’s Herald Square, protesters held banners reading “Hands off Lebanon now” and “No US-Israeli war on Lebanon,” expressing their opposition to the escalating conflict.

As tensions continue to rise, the UN Security Council is scheduled to meet to discuss the situation in Lebanon. Many global leaders are calling on Israel to avoid launching a full-scale war.

Yunus pledges reform and rebuilding, with U.S. backing.
</excerpt>

US President Joe Biden met with Bangladesh’s new interim leader Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, signaling strong U.S. support for Yunus following his recent appointment. Yunus, a Nobel laureate, assumed leadership after a student-led uprising ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled the country.

Biden praised Yunus for his efforts to rebuild Bangladesh, pledging continued U.S. assistance to support the country’s reform agenda. The White House emphasized the “shared democratic values” between the U.S. and Bangladesh.

Yunus Thanks Student Revolutionaries

During the meeting, Yunus shared the story of how the students in Bangladesh “rose against tyranny” and helped usher in a new era for the nation. He presented Biden with a book of paintings created by the young revolutionaries, symbolizing the hope and vision for Bangladesh’s future.

Clinton Praises Yunus at Global Initiative

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, a longtime friend of Yunus, spoke highly of his work during the Clinton Global Initiative’s annual meeting. Clinton highlighted their 40-year friendship and the global impact of Yunus’s microfinance revolution, which empowered impoverished women through small loans.

Clinton praised Yunus’s ability to “stay in the future business” by remaining relevant and committed to global change. Yunus, in turn, acknowledged the students of Bangladesh for driving the revolution and expressed hope for the country’s successful transformation.

Sheikh Hasina Ousted After Uprising

Sheikh Hasina’s government faced widespread criticism for human rights abuses, including mass detentions and extrajudicial killings. Over 450 people lost their lives in the violence leading up to her removal, and many of her allies have since been arrested or purged from power.

Although the U.S. had maintained cooperation with Hasina on issues like counterterrorism, her government’s backsliding on democratic values drew criticism from Washington. Now, under Yunus’s leadership, Bangladesh looks to rebuild with international support.

</excerpt>

In the contemporary geopolitically fractious world, PM Modi has managed to elicit extraordinary support from the major global power players while deftly courting India’s biggest adversaries. PM Modi has transformed India’s image globally in myriads ways. Though foreign policy has rarely been a part of India’s electoral discourse, PM Modi, during campaign for the recent parliamentary elections, promised to position India as a world leader.

In spite of the multifarious challenges on the domestic and international fronts, PM Modi has emerged as a leader of global stature with the potential to address serious global issues, especially conflicts, and has worked tirelessly to ameliorate the condition of the marginalized by virtue of visionary, bold, and unabated leadership. In fact, PM Modi has raised the profile of India as a companion of preference, a voice of reason and a global consensus builder. Undoubtedly, he is abundantly endowed with the Kautilya’s six attributes of a ruler for perfection of diplomacy, namely, superior intelligence, sharp memory, refinement of speech, knowledge of politics, morality and readiness to provide resources.
When PM Modi took over the reins of India in 2014, it was presumed that foreign policy would be his weakest suit in governance. Contrarily, last decade has witnessed confidence building with the prominent global powers. PM Modi has shown great diplomacy in dealing with all three US Presidents of his time resulting into improved appreciation of each other’s worldviews. This relationship has led to consequential steps for promoting global relationship for India in strategic, economic, commercial and technological spheres. India and US have mutually engaged on sixty dialogues, including ultramodern emergent technologies, education, health, agriculture, green hydrogen, defense, and software & hardware development. On invitation from US President Joe Biden in June 2023, PM Modi got the rare opportunity to address the Joint Session of the US Congress for the second time.

PM Modi’s biggest strengths are his diplomatic skills and perseverance to overcome emerging global challenges such as Covid-19 pandemic. In addition to successfully tackling the pandemic on the domestic front, India developed and distributed over 300 million Covid-19 vaccines to approximately 100 countries on gratis basis. This made the world realize that India’s progress is good both for her own people and the whole world, especially the developing countries.

Before the world could come out of the grips of the pandemic, it was struck by two unanticipated conflicts: the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas confrontation. Some other unsettling developments during this period included the increasingly aggressive conduct of China in the East China Sea against Japan and Taiwan, in the South China Sea against several ASEAN countries, and against India and Bhutan on the undecided and disputed land boundary. To tackle these problems and counter aggressive China, various initiatives were taken. The first one of these was effective promulgation of the activities of the Neighbourhood First Policy and BIMSTEC and the launch of the ‘SAGAR’ vision. Success of these is evident from the fact that India’s ties with its neighbours are deeper today than these were in 2014.

Modi’s first visit as the PM to Nepal in August 2014, the first by an Indian PM in 17 years, focused on 4 Cs — cooperation, connectivity, culture and constitution. PM Modi has since traveled to Nepal four more times. The Joint Economic Commission between the two countries met in September 2014 after a 23-year hiatus. The dialogues with Nepalese leaders have significantly enhanced understanding and cooperation between the two countries. Another significant development in foreign affairs is the ratification of the Land Boundary Agreement with Bangladesh, long-pending since 1975. This agreement gave a strong message that India is keen to strengthen its bilateral relations with Bangladesh, its important eastern neighbour. India-Bangladesh ties today have improved significantly and emerged as a model for friendly relations. PM Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka in March, 2015 was the first visit by an Indian PM after a long gap of 32 years.

India’s decisive political and economic support to Sri Lanka during the 2022 crisis, amounting to $4.50 billion in cash and kind, significantly enhanced confidence building between the two nations. Relations between India and Bhutan have always been cordial. Recent visits by the Bhutanese PM to India in March 2024 and by PM Modi to Bhutan have further strengthened the already robust bilateral ties. The Bhutanese PM’s first visit to India after winning the 2024 elections was particularly significant against the backdrop of Bhutan’s economic challenges and its complex relationship with China.

One of the most significant achievements of PM Modi’s foreign policy is the deepening of India’s ties with the Middle East countries. Earlier these countries used to look at India through the religious prism of Islam prompted by Pakistan. It is no longer the reality today. India has emerged as a strategic and economic partner of the Middle East countries. This is visible from the fact that several of these countries including UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia have decorated PM Modi with their highest national awards. UAE invited the then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to address the foreign ministers of Organization of Islamic Countries in 2019, ignoring the objections raised by Pakistan. Likewise, in January 2024, Minister for Minority Affairs Smriti Irani attended the third Haj and Umrah Conference in Jeddah. These would have been nearly impossible a decade ago. Moreover, due to cordial relations no Middle East country took a stand against abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A. Oppositely, UAE declared to invest a sum of Rs 500 crore for mega projects like a mega-mall, and IT towers in Jammu and Srinagar. The success of PM Modi’s foreign policy in the Middle East can be assessed from the fact that India was able to get back her eight retired naval officials who had been awarded death sentences. The Emir of Qatar set them free to return to India in February 2024.

India’s Act East Policy has been remarkably successful in expanding and diversifying relations in economic, political, strategic, cultural, and connectivity spheres with ASEAN countries as well as Japan, Australia, The Republic of Korea, Pacific Island Nations and others. PM Modi has also been an active participant in the revival of the Quad in November 2017 and its upgradation to summit level over the last three years.
India has firmly displayed its sovereignty and strategic autonomy by not criticizing Russia for its attack on Ukraine, despite significant pressure from the West. Further, in these critical times, India has managed to import large quantities of oil and gas from Russia at concessional rates for ensuring affordable energy supply.

The successful conduct of the G20 Presidency is certainly the pinnacle of PM Modi’s achievements in the foreign policy arena. The political scientists could not anticipate that India would succeed in crafting a consensus ’Leaders Declaration, especially in the widely divergent positions on the conflict in Ukraine, with the West on one side and Russia and China on the other. However, India was able to achieve the unthinkable. Much of this success can be attributed to the leadership of PM Modi and the mutual respect and trust he has fostered with most world leaders. The world came together to ensure a successful G20 Presidency of India. Under PM Modi, India emerged as a Voice of the Global South and ‘Vishwamitra’ (Friend of the World) by virtue of the remarkable success of its G20 Presidency.

On the 9th of July, 2024, PM Modi was formally presented with the ‘Order of St. Andrew the Apostle’ by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russia’s highest civilian honour is the recognition of PM Modi’s exceptional efforts in promoting the privileged strategic partnership between Russia and India.

A few months back Pew Research Centre, the prestigious nonpartisan think tank of the US, gave a factual report based on rigorous research. This report holds Narendra Modi as India’s most popular political figure. The confidence and trust level of Indians in Modi is much stronger than that enjoyed by other politicians of India. Modi’s popularity shows his potential to deliver globally, for a progressive and peaceful world. John C. Maxwell says “Leaders become great, not because of their power, but because of their ability to empower others.” Narendra Modi is certainly a leader of global acclaim who has earned great respect by empowering others.

Key topics include health, security, and Indo-Pacific peace.
</excerpt>

US President Joe Biden will host the fourth in-person Quad Leaders Summit on September 21 in Wilmington, Delaware, as announced by the White House on Thursday. The summit will gather leaders from the Quad alliance: Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia, and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of Japan.

This summit is significant as it will be the last meeting of all current Quad leaders, with both Biden and Kishida set to step down from office. Biden recently confirmed he will not run for a second term as US president, and Fumio Kishida also announced that he will not seek re-election as head of the Liberal Democratic Party.

Focus of the Quad Summit

The summit aims to strengthen the strategic alignment between the four nations, advancing their shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region. Discussions will cover several key areas, including:
– Health security
– Disaster response
– Maritime security
– Infrastructure development
– Emerging technologies
– Climate change
– Clean energy
– Cybersecurity

White House Statement on the Summit

According to Karine Jean-Pierre, White House spokesperson, the summit will focus on reinforcing strategic ties and delivering benefits to the Indo-Pacific region. She stated, “The Quad Leaders Summit will focus on bolstering strategic convergence among our countries and advancing a free, open Indo-Pacific region.”

India’s Role and Future Summits

India is scheduled to host the next Quad Leaders Summit, showing the nation’s growing involvement in regional cooperation. In July, foreign ministers from the Quad nations met in Tokyo and pledged to strengthen cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, sending a clear message to China about maintaining a region free from dominance or coercion.

Additionally, the Quad nations plan to expand the Indo-Pacific Maritime Domain Awareness (IPMDA) program to cover the Indian Ocean, enhancing regional security and monitoring.

PM Modi’s visit follows his recent trips to Ukraine and Russia.
</excerpt>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the United States this month for the Quad Summit on September 21. This will be Modi’s first trip to the US since beginning his third term as Prime Minister. The summit, held in Wilmington, Delaware, marks a significant event as it will be the last meeting with the current Quad leaders, including US President Joe Biden and Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

Significance of the Summit

The summit is notable for being the last gathering of the existing Quad alliance leaders before both Biden and Kishida step down from their positions. Biden has announced he will not seek re-election, and Kishida has confirmed he will not run for re-election as the head of the Liberal Democratic Party. The summit also celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Quad alliance, originally formed to promote cooperation between Australia, India, Japan, and the United States.

Modi’s US Itinerary

After the Quad Summit, Prime Minister Modi will travel to New York to attend the United Nations Summit of the Future on September 22–23. On September 22, he will participate in a major community event titled ‘Modi & US Progress Together’ at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Long Island. However, Modi will not address the UN General Assembly; instead, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent India on September 28.

US Presidential Elections Context

Modi’s visit comes ahead of the US presidential elections, where Republican candidate Donald Trump is facing Democrat nominee Kamala Harris. This visit underscores the importance of Indo-US relations in the lead-up to the elections.

$125 Million Military Assistance For Ukraine, US Announces

<excerpt>US announces $125 million military aid for Ukraine amid its surprise offensive into Russia and ongoing defense challenges.
</excerpt>

United States has unveiled a new $125 million military aid package for Ukraine, coinciding with a surprise Ukrainian offensive inside Russian territory. The announcement, made on August 9, underscores the US’s enduring support for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.

Details of the Aid Package

The latest aid package, which does not involve financial assistance, will be drawn from US stockpiles. It includes air defense interceptors, munitions for rocket systems and artillery, multi-mission radars, and anti-tank weapons. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted that this support aims to enhance Ukraine’s defensive and offensive capabilities, helping protect its troops, civilians, and infrastructure from Russian attacks.

Support for the Surprise Offensive

The timing of the aid is notable as it aligns with Ukraine’s unexpected offensive into Russia’s western Kursk region. Ukrainian forces, reportedly up to 35 kilometers from the border, are undertaking one of the most significant cross-border operations since the conflict began. Although Ukrainian authorities have not confirmed the operation, President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized its strategic importance. The new aid could potentially bolster Ukraine’s efforts in this high-stakes maneuver.

Defending Key Locations

In addition to the offensive, the aid package is crucial for Ukraine’s defense of Pokrovsk, a key logistical hub for Kyiv. Russian forces have made significant advances toward Pokrovsk, now reportedly 20 kilometers away. The strategic significance of this location is vital for Ukraine’s broader defense in the Donetsk region. The aid might be used to strengthen Ukraine’s position in Pokrovsk and other critical areas.

Strategic Implications and Limitations

While the aid package provides significant support, it is not expected to be a game-changer. Ukraine’s arsenal remains dwarfed by Russia’s extensive military resources. The aid will help Ukraine maintain its defense and potentially prepare for further engagements, but challenges remain as Russia continues to outpace Ukraine in terms of weaponry and troop numbers. The support helps Ukraine buy time and improve its readiness but does not alter the fundamental imbalance of military power.

US Department of State reported that over $55.4 billion in military assistance has been provided to Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022, demonstrating ongoing commitment to Ukraine’s defense and sovereignty.

</excerpt>

The White House press briefing became contentious on 8 July, as reporters pressed Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre about a Parkinson’s specialist, Dr. Kevin Cannard, who had visited the White House eight times over eight months. They wanted to know if President Joe Biden had seen Dr. Cannard.

A reporter voiced frustration over the perceived lack of transparency from the administration regarding these visits. Jean-Pierre responded firmly, refusing to confirm any names from the visitors’ log, citing privacy concerns. She did, however, confirm that President Biden had seen a neurologist three times for his physical exams and stressed that this level of disclosure was in line with past administrations, such as those of George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

Jean-Pierre assured that there were no findings of major neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, or ALS during these examinations. She emphasized that comprehensive health reports were released following each physical exam, highlighting the administration’s transparency.

Despite persistent questioning, Jean-Pierre maintained that she would not divulge specific names or details, stressing the importance of privacy and appropriateness. She reiterated that the President’s medical team had found no significant neurological issues and that the administration had been forthcoming with relevant health information.

The briefing also touched on President Biden’s commitment to the 2024 presidential elections which are to be held on 5 November. Biden humorously remarked that only the “Lord Almighty” could drive him out of the race, reinforcing his determination to continue in his role.

The press briefing highlighted the tension between the need for transparency about the President’s health and the necessity of respecting privacy. The White House emphasized that Biden’s health examinations revealed no major issues and that they had been open about his health status.

</excerpt>

U.S. President Joe Biden travels to Italy for discussions with Group of Seven leaders to intensify pressure on Russia due to its conflict with Ukraine, as well as on China for its backing of Moscow and surplus industrial capacity.

The G7 leaders come to the summit facing numerous challenges domestically while also aiming to address some of the most urgent global issues.

The leaders of the most advanced democratic nations will tackle various issues during their meeting from June 13 to 15. These include conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, trade disparities with China, concerns about artificial intelligence, and developmental hurdles in Africa.

According to White House spokesperson John Kirby, the leaders will unveil fresh sanctions and export restrictions aimed at Russia, specifically targeting entities and networks supporting President Vladimir Putin’s military operations in Ukraine. Kirby emphasized the intention to increase the financial burdens on Russia’s military efforts.

Washington plans to expand sanctions on semiconductor chip sales to Russia, targeting third-party Chinese sellers. At the upcoming G7 meeting, securing funding for Ukraine is a top priority, especially with concerns about a potential Trump re-election and its impact on U.S. support for Kyiv.

The G7 and EU are exploring using profits from frozen Russian assets to offer Ukraine a substantial upfront loan for its 2025 financing needs.

Biden aims to persuade G7 leaders to support a plan using future interest from Russian funds to back a $50 billion loan for Ukraine. G7 leaders are also dealing with domestic challenges, like Sunak’s potential loss in the upcoming UK vote, and the setbacks of French and German leaders in recent European elections.

Kirby mentioned Biden’s upcoming meeting and joint press conference with Ukrainian President Zelenskiy.

Joe Biden was at his home in Wilmington, Delaware, after his son Hunter Biden was convicted of lying about his drug use to buy a gun illegally in 2018, making him the first child of a sitting U.S. president to be convicted of a crime. This follows Trump’s recent felony conviction, with both candidates now neck-and-neck in the polls for the November presidential election.

</excerpt>

During a moving ceremony to commemorate D-Day in France, President Biden appeared to struggle awkwardly as he tried to find his seat while other dignitaries stood nearby.

The video footage shows the 81-year-old US President reaching for his chair on the stage in Normandy, France, while his wife, First Lady Jill Biden, and French President Emmanuel Macron stood beside him.

Forbes’ fact-check report debunked claims that Joe Biden tried to sit on an imaginary chair. A video circulated on social media, edited right before Biden sat down on a visible chair. This happened after a pause during an introduction of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.

The video sparked speculation about Biden’s actions, with other clips suggesting he was falling asleep or disoriented after shaking hands with the French President until an aide intervened.

Is there ever a time when Americans realize just how much of an embarrassment this is on a world stage? Does this kind of incompetence and weakness encourage our enemies to act the way they’ve been acting?
The Bidens joined world leaders and veterans at Normandy’s beaches to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the June 6, 1944, invasion that ended World War II. Biden expressed his deep honor in saluting the US veterans, some of whom were wrapped in warm blankets during the ceremony.

US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller highlighted the ongoing economic cooperation between the two nations and the strengthening of people-to-people bonds.

“We work with India on economic matters. We worked with them to deepen people-to-people ties between our two countries. Of course, we work with them on a free, secure, prosperous Indo-Pacific and those will continue to be our priorities,” stated the US State Department Spokesperson during a media briefing.

When questioned about potential US participation in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, Miller indicated that there were no current announcements but encouraged staying informed.

“I don’t have any announcements to make today but stay tuned…,” he remarked.

Regarding the annual two-plus-two dialogue between India and the US, Miller confirmed its continuation but refrained from providing further details.

“I don’t have any announcements to make with respect to that dialogue, but it is an important priority for us, it’s an important priority for the secretary and we will continue to hold it. But in terms of when it will happen, I can’t tell you sitting here,” explained Miller.

Praising India as the world’s largest democracy, Matthew Miller applauded the Indian government, voters, and poll workers for the successful execution of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

“…So India is, of course, the world’s largest democracy and the election that just played out over the last six weeks was the largest exercise of democracy in the history of the world. We commend the government of India, voters and poll workers, for this massive undertaking…,” remarked Matthew Miller during the media briefing.

Miller reiterated the US’s anticipation of continued collaboration with PM Modi.

“…In terms of the prime minister’s-coalition in the different governments, those are all choices for the Indian people to make and we respect the will of the Indian people,” he added.

Following PM Modi’s victory, US President Joe Biden congratulated him and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) via a post on X, highlighting the growing friendship between the two nations.

In the X post, Biden stated, “Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the National Democratic Alliance on their victory, and the nearly 650 million voters in this historic election. The friendship between our nations is only growing as we unlock a shared future of unlimited potential.”

The Election Commission concluded the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on Tuesday, revealing that BJP won 240 seats with Congress trailing behind at 99 seats out of the 543 constituencies. In an unexpected turn of events, Narendra Modi was unanimously chosen as the leader by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), confirmed by a letter of support from 21 NDA leaders. The significant decision was made during an important gathering at Modi’s official Delhi residence on the following Wednesday.

</excerpt>

Both President Joe Biden of the United States and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak are under significant pressure from worried voters and opposition leaders regarding border security and the effects of immigration on national resources. As critical elections loom in the U.S. and UK, immigration challenges have taken center stage.

Joe Biden

President Joe Biden has implemented executive actions to limit asylum at the US-Mexico border, a shift from his campaign promises. This change aims to address the influx of migrants, a key concern for both the public and political opponents like former President Trump.

Trump criticizes Biden’s policies as ineffective, calling for stricter measures like mass deportations and enhanced border security.

Gallup polls show immigration is a top concern for American voters, with 56% believing Biden’s approach has had a negative impact, including some Democrats expressing dissatisfaction.

Rishi Sunak

In the US, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faces immigration controversies ahead of the election. Sunak aims to cut immigration levels, differentiating the Conservative Party from the leading Labour Party.

Despite Brexit, net migration remains high at 685,000, prompting Sunak’s policies targeting international students and care workers with stricter visa rules and salary thresholds.

These strategies are intended to decrease the total migrant count and tackle public worries regarding the strain on housing, education, and healthcare services. The discussion on immigration in the United Kingdom also encompasses the controversial topic of asylum seekers using small boats to cross the Channel.

Sunak’s proposal to relocate these asylum seekers to Rwanda has encountered legal obstacles and has not been put into action, further complicating the immigration discourse.

</excerpt>

Shortly after former US President Donald Trump was convicted in the notorious hush-money case, he harshly criticized the jury, labeling the trial as “rigged and disgraceful.” Trump made these incendiary comments while speaking to reporters outside the New York courthouse following the verdict.

While addressing the reporters, Trump called himself a ‘very innocent man’ and insisted that he had done nothing wrong. He exclaimed outside the courtroom “The real verdict is going to be November 5 by the people, and they know what happened here, and everybody knows what happened here.”

Shortly after Trump’s remarks, his campaign’s official website redirected visitors to a fundraising page claiming he was a “political prisoner.” The page read, “I was just convicted in a RIGGED political Witch Hunt trial: I DID NOTHING WRONG! They’ve raided my home, arrested me, took my mugshot, AND NOW THEY’VE JUST CONVICTED ME!”

The fundraising page featured Trump’s mugshot from his arraignment in Georgia last year. The former reality TV star’s page solicited donations of $20.24 or more for Trump’s joint fundraising committee.

It is worth mentioning that Trump remains free, as the judge did not order his detention following the verdict. Trump ultimately exited the courtroom in a Secret Service motorcade.

The sentencing for the former president is set for July 11, just four days before the Republican National Convention begins in Milwaukee.

Biden’s team shared their thoughts on the issue

While Biden’s campaign was aggressive and outspoken on the issue, the White House maintained a more reserved approach. Ian Sams, a spokesperson for the counsel’s office, issued a brief statement: “We respect the rule of law, and have no additional comment.”

In contrast, Biden’s campaign emphasized that the verdict demonstrated “no one is above the law” and reminded voters that the only way to prevent Trump from returning to the Oval Office is through the ballot box.

Biden campaign spokesman Michael Tyler stated via mail “Convicted felon or not, Trump will be the Republican nominee for president.”

</excerpt>

US President Joe Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump are gearing up for intense clashes in June and September, as both leaders eye their second White House bid and have accepted invitations for debates, according to CNN.

CNN will host the first debate on June 27, followed by ABC News hosting the second on September 10.

President Biden confirmed his acceptance of both CNN and ABC’s invitations for the debates and passed the baton to Trump. “I’ve received and accepted an invitation from @CNN for a debate on June 27th. Over to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere, any time, any place,” Biden announced on X. He further added, “I’ve also received and accepted an invitation to a debate hosted by ABC on Tuesday, September 10th. Trump says he’ll arrange his own transportation. I’ll bring my plane, too. I plan on keeping it for another four years.”

Donald Trump, aiming for a return to the White House after his contentious exit in 2020, also agreed to the debate invitations. He took to the Truth Social platform to announce, “It is my great honor to accept the CNN Debate against Crooked Joe Biden, the WORST PRESIDENT in the History of the United States and a true Threat to Democracy, on June 27th. Likewise, I accept the ABC News Debate against Crooked Joe on September 10th. Thank you, DJT!”

Responding to Biden’s challenge issued in a video on Wednesday, Trump criticized Biden’s debating skills and presidency. “Crooked Joe Biden is the WORST debater I have ever faced – He can’t put two sentences together! Crooked is also the WORST President in the history of the United States, by far,” Trump stated on Truth Social. He criticized Biden’s policies on open borders, electric vehicle mandates, inflation, taxes, and foreign policy.

Trump expressed interest in having more than two debates and suggested hosting them in large venues for excitement. “Just tell me when I’ll be there. Let’s get ready to Rumble!!!” he added.

Both candidates are gearing up for the presidential elections scheduled for November this year. Biden faces challenges regarding domestic issues and foreign policy, particularly the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, while Trump contends with multiple ongoing criminal cases.

</excerpt>

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday dismissed US President Joe Biden’s accusation of “xenophobia” and highlighted India’s economic growth rate of 7 per cent, which surpasses that of numerous other nations. Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s status as the most open, pluralistic, and diverse society, refuting any claims of “xenophobia.”

“We are the most open society, till date I have never seen such an open society, such a pluralistic society, such a diverse society, so I would say that we are actually not just not xenophobic, we are the most open, most pluralistic and in many ways, the most understanding society in the world,” EAM Jaishankar said while interacting with professionals in Bhubaneswar on “Why Bharat Matters”.

“Secondly, there was some talk about economic performance, you know our GDP is at 7 per cent. You check other people’s GDP, check the growth rate and you will get the answer,” he added.

During a Washington fundraising event on April 2, Biden claimed that the “xenophobic” characteristics of India, China, Japan, and Russia contribute to their economic challenges. He asserted that America’s economic growth is attributable to its openness to immigrants. Biden suggested that Japan, Russia, and China would experience improved economic performance if they embraced immigration.

Earlier, in an interview with the Economic Times, Jaishankar dismissed claims of the Indian economy faltering. The Union Minister highlighted the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government as evidence of India’s hospitable stance.

Jaishankar said in the interview published on Saturday, “First of all, our economy is not faltering.”

As per a Ministry of Finance report, the Indian economy is poised to achieve close to 7 per cent growth in the fiscal year 2024-25. This optimistic forecast is credited to strong domestic demand, which has driven the country’s growth rate to over 7 percent in the last three years. The Ministry of Finance also stated in its January monthly review report that India aims to become a USD 7 trillion economy within the next six to seven years. Currently, the Indian economy is estimated to be around USD 3.7 trillion.

Krishnamurthy V Subramaniam, the Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), remarked in April that India will remain a key driver of global growth in the coming years. Speaking with ANI, he highlighted India’s consistent growth of over 7 percent since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Subramaniam predicted an 8 percent growth rate for India in the fourth quarter, which he deemed commendable given the prevailing global economic conditions.

Jaishankar rebutted accusations of President Biden labeling India as “xenophobic,” stressing that the nation has maintained an open and inclusive approach towards individuals from various backgrounds.

“India is always… India has been a very unique country… I would say actually, in the history of the world, that it’s been a society which has been very open… different people from different societies come to India,” he said.

Jaishankar highlighted that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), implemented by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government, demonstrates India’s hospitable attitude.

He said, “That’s why we have the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act), which is to open up doors for people who are in trouble… I think we should be open to people who need to come to India, who have a claim to come to India.”

Following Biden’s characterization of India, Japan, and other nations as “xenophobic,” the White House clarified the President’s remarks, underlining his “respect” for allies and partners.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre affirmed that the President’s remarks were part of a larger message highlighting the resilience derived from America’s immigrant background. She emphasized Biden’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties with countries like India and Japan, evident in his actions over the previous three years.

“Obviously, we have a strong relationship with, India with Japan, and the President if you just look at the last three years has certainly focused on those diplomatic relationships,” she said.

In response to assertions that India’s economy was struggling, Jaishankar highlighted the country’s openness to outside influences, such as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), in an interview with the Economic Times.

In response to Biden’s remarks from April 2, Jaishankar emphasised India’s longstanding record of tolerating other cultures and groups while disputing the idea that the country’s xenophobia is causing economic difficulties. He said that the CAA is a good way to help people in need.

Regarding criticisms leveled against the CAA, Jaishankar disputed claims of mass citizenship loss among Muslims, asserting that no such incidents had occurred.

During the discussion, Jaishankar also commented on anti-Israel protests in American universities, criticizing biased coverage by certain Western media outlets and alleging a targeted agenda against India.

Responding to reports implicating India in targeted terrorist operations in Pakistan, Jaishankar suggested that areas with significant terrorist presence naturally see security operations.

Following Biden’s remarks labeling India and other nations as “xenophobic,” the White House clarified his intentions, emphasizing his respect for allies and partners. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre reiterated Biden’s focus on diplomatic relations with countries like India and Japan over the past three years.

</excerpt>

US President Joe Biden on Thursday remarked that the economic challenges faced by India, China, Japan, and Russia stem from their “Xenophobic” attitudes, contrasting them with America’s growth fueled by its openness to immigrants.

During a Washington fundraising event for his re-election campaign, the President asserted that Japan, along with Russia and China, could improve their economic performance by adopting more immigration-friendly policies.

“You know, one of the reasons why our economy is growing is because of you and many others. Why? Because we welcome immigrants. We look to — the reason — look, think about it. Why is China stalling so badly economically? Why is Japan having trouble? Why is Russia? Why is India? Because they’re xenophobic. They don’t want immigrants,” Biden said.

“Immigrants is what makes us strong. Not a joke. That’s not hyperbole. Because we have an influx of workers who want to be here and just contribute,” he added.

Immigration stands as a divisive topic in US politics and is poised to be a significant factor in the upcoming November presidential election. Illegal border crossings have led to an average annual influx of around 2 million individuals since 2021, marking the highest level recorded to date.

Surveys indicate widespread public dissatisfaction with President Biden’s management of the surge, while former President Donald Trump, who also encountered criticism for his immigration strategies, is campaigning with pledges to toughen enforcement and deport millions of individuals.

According to The Washington Post, former President Trump’s opposition to the recently failed bipartisan border bill worth USD 118 billion, which linked border reforms to aid for Ukraine, persuaded numerous Republican lawmakers to reject the proposal. This stance has also severely undermined the prospects of enacting new legislation and implementing measures to alleviate illegal border crossings and alleviate pressure on cities grappling with overloaded shelters.

Following Biden’s assumption of office, illegal border crossings surged, notably after he swiftly reversed numerous restrictions implemented during the Trump administration. Despite this, Biden cautioned that immigration laws would still be enforced. Additionally, he temporarily retained a Trump-era pandemic policy called Title 42, enabling authorities to promptly expel individuals crossing the border.

Under President Biden, the number of individuals apprehended by the US Border Patrol has surged to the highest levels recorded in the agency’s century-long history, averaging around 2 million annually.

According to The Washington Post, during the initial days of President Biden’s administration, his team declared that the Title 42 policy would not be applied to turn away unaccompanied minors arriving without a parent or guardian. Almost immediately, there was a notable increase in their numbers, leading to images of crowded detention facilities, marking the administration’s first border emergency. Shortly thereafter, Biden tasked Vice President Harris with spearheading a new initiative aimed at tackling the “root causes” of Central American emigration.

Migrants hailing from countries such as Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Senegal, Mauritania, as well as other nations across Africa, Europe, and Asia, are crossing into the US via Mexico in unprecedented numbers. Border Patrol data reveals significant increases, with 14,965 migrants from China arriving between October and December, compared to just 29 during the same period in 2020. Similarly, encounters with migrants from India surged to 9,518 during this three-month timeframe, up from 56 in 2020.

</excerpt>

US President Joe Biden has signed into law a $94bn foreign funding bill that includes military aid to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, ending a months-long legislative impasse in Washington over the assistance.

Biden hailed the passage of the law on Wednesday as a “good day for world peace”, saying that the measure makes the United States safer.

The package will provide Israel with $17bn in additional aid despite growing calls for restricting US assistance to the country over abuses in Gaza, where the Israeli military has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians.

However, the US president framed the new assistance as an effort to help Israel protect itself from attacks against Iran.

“My commitment to Israel – I want to make clear again – is ironclad,” Biden told reporters. “The security of Israel is critical.”

Palestinian rights advocates were quick to denounce the measure, stressing that Israel stands accused before the International Criminal Court of committing genocide against Palestinians.

“It is beyond unconscionable that Congress and President Biden are sending the Israeli military billions of dollars worth of weapons – with no strings attached – to massacre, starve, and expel Palestinian civilians,” IfNotNow, a youth-led progressive Jewish group, said in a statement.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said Biden “passed the moral point of no return” by signing the bill.

“President Biden has betrayed the soul of our nation and disregarded the will of the American people, who overwhelmingly support a ceasefire and oppose unconditional aid to Israel,” CAIR director Nihad Awad said in a statement.

The US Senate approved the bill on Tuesday in a 79-18 vote. Days earlier, the House of Representatives also adopted the measure.

Late on Tuesday, US Senator Bernie Sanders decried the approval of the supplemental foreign funding bill, calling it a “dark day” for the US Senate. He added that Washington should not fund right-wing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s war on Gaza.

“The housing in Gaza is destroyed; the infrastructure in Gaza is destroyed; the health care system in Gaza is destroyed; the educational system in Gaza is destroyed. Enough is enough,” Sanders said in a statement.

The measure had stalled in Congress for months amid competing political agendas.

Some Republicans have expressed growing scepticism about sending more taxpayer dollars to Ukraine as the Russian invasion of the country grinds on more than two years after it began. But Democrats insisted on passing the bill to provide foreign aid to Ukraine and Israel together.

On Wednesday, Biden stressed the importance of the new law and its implications for the battlefield in Ukraine, where Russian forces have made some gains in recent months.

“Now, Americans are going to send Ukraine the supplies they need to keep them in the fight,” he told reporters.

The law allocates $61bn for Ukraine. It also sets aside $9bn for humanitarian assistance around the world, some of which can go to Gaza.

“We’re going to immediately secure that aid and surge it, including food, medical supplies, clean water,” Biden said. “And Israel must make sure all this aid reaches the Palestinians in Gaza without delay.”
Israel has been imposing a siege in Gaza, severely restricting the entry of food and other vital supplies, bringing the territory of more than 2 million people to the verge of famine.

In a statement on April 4, Biden rebuked Israel, suggesting that Washington would reconsider its support for the offensive in Gaza if the Israeli government does not allow more aid and take steps to protect civilians in the territory.

Since then, Israel has pushed on with its blockade and intensified its attacks on Gaza. This week, more than 300 bodies were discovered in mass graves near the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, where the Israeli army had recently conducted an operation.

But the Biden administration has muted its criticism of Israel as tensions between the US ally and Iran intensified in recent weeks. Instead, Washington has repeatedly asserted that its support of Israel remains “ironclad”.

Iran had launched hundreds of drones and missiles against Israel on April 13 in retaliation for a deadly Israeli air raid against Tehran’s consulate in Damascus. Pentagon officials say that US forces in the region helped Israel shoot down most of the Iranian projectiles.

On Wednesday, Biden stressed US support for Israel against Iran. “I will always make sure that Israel has what it needs to defend itself against Iran and terrorists it supports,” he said.

</excerpt>

The passage of the USD 95 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan is indeed a significant development, showcasing bipartisan cooperation in addressing key global issues. President Biden, along with congressional Democrats and Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, played crucial roles in securing the package’s passage despite internal party divisions and challenges.

For Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, who has been a steadfast supporter of Ukraine despite growing resistance from some in his own party, as well as President Joe Biden and legislative Democrats, the bipartisan effort represents a major win.

The complete measure, which is currently awaiting President Biden’s signature, combines four laws that had previously encountered obstacles in the House and Senate. This legislative accomplishment comes after an uncommon Saturday session in the House, during which almost USD 61 billion in aid for Ukraine, over USD 26 billion for Israel, and over USD 8 billion for the Indo-Pacific region were passed.

The inclusion of provisions to increase sanctions on Russian assets reflects a firm stance against Russian aggression, while the potential ban on TikTok underscores concerns about national security risks associated with certain foreign-owned platforms.

McConnell’s leadership was instrumental in guiding the legislation through the Senate, highlighting the importance of upholding American leadership and global responsibilities. The bipartisan support for the package, achieved after negotiations and compromises, underscores the recognition of the importance of supporting allies and addressing global challenges collectively.

Despite initial hurdles and opposition from some quarters, the successful passage of the aid package demonstrates a commitment to fulfilling international obligations and promoting stability in key regions.

</excerpt>

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delayed planned retaliatory measures against Iran after consulting with US President Joe Biden immediately following the assault, as reported by Israeli television on Wednesday.

According to the Kan public broadcaster, the Israeli cabinet had approved various response options based on the severity of Iran’s attack, initially slated for immediate execution after the assault early Sunday.

A senior source informed the broadcaster, “The response won’t be what was planned any longer, diplomatic sensitivities won out.” They added, “There will be a response, but it seems it will be different from what was planned.” Reports indicate that the altered response may be less forceful than originally approved.

Unnamed Western diplomats informed Kan that “the understanding is that Israel will respond.”

While most of Israel’s leadership and military leaders purportedly endorse retaliatory action against Iran, there is opposition, notably from Shas leader Aryeh Deri, who urged against escalating the situation earlier on Wednesday.

Iran launched over 300 missiles, drones, and rockets at Israel over the weekend in retaliation for an airstrike in Damascus, claiming it targeted a consulate and resulted in casualties among Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps personnel. However, Israel intercepted most of the projectiles, resulting in minimal damage.

Additionally, a report by Axios stated that Israel’s war cabinet discussed authorizing a strike on Iran during a meeting on Monday but ultimately decided against it “for operational reasons.” The Biden administration was reportedly briefed on Israel’s decision to refrain from a response.

Preparations for potential future attacks from Iran are underway within the Israeli Air Force, with adjustments being made based on lessons learned from the recent attack, according to Brig. Gen. Doron Gavish, the former commander of Israel’s air defense.

“We are preparing ourselves for the next time, debriefing the mission and seeing how could we prepare ourselves for the next attack,” Gavish said from a military base in southern Israel.

Speaking to the press on Friday, Biden cautioned Iran against attacking Israel, stating, “Don’t,” emphasizing the United States’ dedication to standing by its ally.

“We are devoted to the defence of Israel. We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed. Thank you very much,” Joe Biden added.

His comments surfaced amidst reports from ABC News and CBS News, citing US officials, that Iran has prepared over 100 cruise missiles and an equal number of drones for a potential assault on military sites within Israel. The anticipated attack, potentially orchestrated by both Iranian military and supported proxies, heightens tensions in the region.

Here are the developments in this conflict

Joe Biden on Friday expressed his anticipation of an Iranian attack on Israel “sooner, rather than later,” but he opted not to disclose specific security-related details during his briefing at the White House.

US officials who disclosed Iran’s preparations of drones and missiles for a potential attack on Israel said to CBS News, that defending against such an assault of considerable scale would pose challenges for the Jewish state. Nevertheless, they also suggested the possibility that Iran might opt for a smaller-scale attack to keep broader military tension at bay.

United States Central Command (CENTCOM) chief General Michael Erik Kurilla, convened with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi in Israel on Friday. Gallant’s office stated that the discussions revolved around the “readiness” for a potential Iranian attack which “may lead to regional escalation”.

The US military on Friday, repositioned two destroyers in the Middle East to bolster defense capabilities for both Israel and American forces in anticipation of a potential attack from Iran, The Wall Street Journal said. While one destroyer was already present in the region, the second was redirected for added support. Notably, one of the destroyers is said to be equipped with the Aegis missile-defense system.

Amid concerns over an imminent Iranian threat, several countries, including France, Poland, Russia, and India, have issued travel advisories to their citizens and embassy officials in Israel. The US has instructed its embassy officials and their families to limit travel to areas within Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Be’er Sheva in Israel.

Lufthansa airline from Germany reported that it suspended flights to and from Tehran until April 13 probably. Lufthansa’s subsidiary Austrian Airlines also stated to suspend all flights from Vienna to Tehran until April 18 amidst the escalating tension in the Middle East region, Reuters said.

Iran has reportedly indicated that its response to the April 1 airstrikes will be aimed at preventing a significant escalation and will not be hastily executed. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian reportedly conveyed this message to the US during a recent visit to Oman, Reuters said.

US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken engaged in a conversation with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Friday. The discussion centered on the “urgent need to avoid further escalation” regarding Iran and diplomatic endeavors to resolve the Gaza crisis, a statement from the State Department declared.

While Israel did not officially claim responsibility for the airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Syria on April 1, the Pentagon confirmed Israel’s involvement. Following the strike, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared that an attack on Israel was “inevitable” and vowed that the Jewish state “shall be punished.”

Amid concerns of a potential attack by Iran on Israel, Australian airline Qantas has redirected its non-stop flight route between Perth and London.

“We’re temporarily adjusting the flight paths for our flights between Perth and London due to the situation in parts of the Middle East. We’ll reach out to customers directly if there’s any change to their booking,” a Qantas spokesperson was quoted by 9News as saying.

Speaking at a press conference alongside Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, Biden emphasized, “As I told Prime Minister Netanyahu, our commitment to Israel’s security against these threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad. Let me say it again: ironclad. We’re going to do all we can to protect Israel’s security.”

Addressing the Oval Office meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu, Biden highlighted discussions on the Iranian threat and the need to address it. He reiterated their joint efforts towards a ceasefire and a potential hostage deal, with a focus on humanitarian aid for Gaza. Biden urged Israel to agree to a ceasefire and allow unrestricted access for food and medicine for the next six to eight weeks.

Regarding his talks with Netanyahu, Biden stressed his direct and frank approach, stating, “About my discussions with Netanyahu, as well as our relationship with Israel, I have been very blunt and straightforward with the Prime Minister, as well as his War Cabinet, as well as the Cabinet.”

Biden disclosed details of his extensive conversation with Netanyahu, including agreements to increase aid to Gaza and minimize civilian casualties in the region. He affirmed his administration’s dedication to securing the release of hostages held by Hamas, emphasizing their commitment to bringing American hostages home.

Overall, Biden underscored the importance of addressing the ongoing crisis in the region and reiterated the United States’ steadfast support for Israel’s security.

</excerpt>

On day following the Netanyahu government’s approval to reopen the Erez border crossing for humanitarian aid into Gaza, US President Joe Biden stated that Israel’s actions are in response to his call for measures to reduce humanitarian suffering in the Gaza Strip.

“I asked them to do what they’re doing,” stated Biden in his comments when queried by a journalist regarding the possibility of halting military support to Israel. Biden made these remarks while departing the White House to inspect the damage from the recent bridge collapse in Baltimore.

The US President’s statement followed a strained phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In the call, President Biden cautioned that the US might reevaluate its policy unless Israel undertook definitive measures to safeguard civilian lives and aid workers. This warning came in the wake of Israeli strikes that resulted in the deaths of seven food relief workers affiliated with the World Central Kitchen.

Following the dialogue between the two leaders, Israel announced the opening of the Erez crossing on Gaza’s northern border, allowing temporary aid delivery through the Ashdod port. This move aims to increase the flow of humanitarian supplies into Gaza. Moreover, Israel has also committed to increasing the amount of assistance entering Jordan through the Kerem Shalom crossing.

Earlier on Friday, ABC News host George Stephanopoulos queried White House spokesperson Kirby about whether Israel’s recent adjustments meet Biden’s requirements.

In his response, Kirby stated, “Well, we’re going to have to watch and see where they go from here…” referring to the overnight moves as “good starts.” Regarding Biden’s communications with Netanyahu, the National Security Council spokesperson said, “But we’ve got to see them execute and implement those things over time.”

Meanwhile, during a press conference on Friday for the US-European Union Trade and Technology Council in Belgium, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken delivered a message that echoed previous statements.

He stated, “These are positive developments, but the real test is results and that’s what we’re looking to see in the coming days and in the coming weeks.” He also mentioned that the US would closely monitor the frequency of aid trucks entering Gaza and the reversal of food insecurity indicators.

Erez Crossing, also referred to as Beit Hanoun, is a significant border crossing between Israel and the northern Gaza Strip. Recently, it was reopened for the first time since the October 7 attack by Hamas. Previously, Israel had maintained strict control over land crossings and prohibited all travel by air and sea to and from Gaza.

Prior to the onset of the conflict, the enclave had two operational crossings: Erez, designated for the passage of individuals, and Kerem Shalom, intended for the transfer of goods.
